2017
Located in semi-arid zone, oasis basins of east-central Niger are high potential agroecosystems. They represent the last areas where farming is possible throughout the year. These oasis basins have experienced many investments from several NGOs and projects in these recent years. However, the oasis basins are still unknown and / underused by development actors due to their extreme diversity and also due to their huge number. This thesis aims to: • Evaluate the performance of three image classification methods in detecting these oasian basins in the Department of Goure. The methods are pixel analysis, textural analysis and object analysis. They are applied to SPOT 5-THX 2.5 m resolution images. • Characterize the oasis basins shape with two morphological indices (the compactness index of Gravelius and the fractal dimension) as well as their orientations while using the sectors of the wind rose as benchmarks; • Assess constraints and opportunities related to landscape units of oasis basins and their surroundings for all the oasis basins in the Department of Gouré. Based on the area of these landscape units, spatial indicators of oasis basins characterization were developed. • Trace the history of the occupation of the oasis basins and their surroundings back to the past. The analyzes are carried out at three periods with Landsat 5-TM images in 1984, SPOT 3 images in 1996 and SPOT 5-THX images in 2013. • Plan to develop oasis basins degradation monitoring tools in the study area. Evaluation of the results shows that the approach by object analysis (global precision was 97.12%, Kappa coefficient was equal to 0.97) is more efficient than the textural method (overall precision was 89.61%, Kappa coefficient was equal to 0.90) and the pixel-based approach (overall precision was 80.58%, Kappa coefficient was equal to 0.80). A first original information, namely the number, the position and the surface of all the oasis basins on the study area is provided. The total number of oasis basins in the Department of Gouré is estimated to 10717.The inventory of these resources is a first compulsory step for the morphological characterization of oasian basins and for the evaluation of their agricultural potential. The shape index of Gravelius helped highlight circular oasis basins (9%), ovoid (47%), amoeboid (11%), stretched (18%) and very stretched or stretched-amoeboid (16%). The fractal dimension allowed making three classes of basin according to the degree of smoothness of their contours by the wind: very smoothed (39%), smoothed (50%) and moderately smoothed (10%). Herein, the smoothing is interpreted as an indicator of the eolization of the peripheries of the oasis basins. Finally, the determination of the orientation of the main axis of the basins has identified four major areas: EW (23%), NS (21%) NE-SW (22%) and SE-NW (34%). These morphological and orientation analyzes applied for the first time to all the oasis basins of the Department of Gouré offer evidence for understanding the processes of silting the oasis basins in this zone. Analysis of the agricultural potential indicators shows that the oasis basins are multi-purpose spaces, with large skills in arboriculture, market gardens, natron and forestry according to geomorphologic units. In the study area corresponding to the Department of Goure (Niger), the percentage of cropland is low for 45.8% of the oasis basins and high to very high for 3.9%. The percentage of woodland is very high for 61.6% of the oasis basins which represents 51.4% of the area. Oasis basins with natron bare soil and/or shallow or surface groundwater represent 17.6% of oasis basins. For risk indicators of degradation, they show that 3.3% and 0.5% of oasis basins have respectively high and very high risks of getting covered with sand in a medium-term period. Regarding the short-term period, the risk of getting sand dune encroachment is high and very high for 3% and 0.8% of the oasis basins, respectively. Concerning the recent evolution in this environment, the areas of the oasis basins range from 46783 ha in 1984 to 34553 ha in 2013, transiting to 40831 ha in 1996. Unlike the area of declining cuvettes, their number increased from 1984 (8911) to 2013 (10717). This is partly explained by the different resolutions of the satellite images used, but especially by the fragmentation of certain basins due to their degradation and the creation of new ones by wind erosion. This dynamic is accentuated by the human occupation of the landscapes. The surroundings of the oasis basins and dry valleys often made up of dune buildings are increasingly occupied by rain-fed crops, which expose them to erosion. In 1984, dunes and dry valleys with rainfed crops represented 295697 ha, whereas in 1996 and 2013 they occupied 368153 ha and 423876 ha respectively. The geographic information systems have allowed observing and following all the oasis basins. This system, designed using UML, has not only put the relationships between indicators of recoverable potential and degradation and additional information collected in the field (village market, biological fixation zone and Mechanical dunes) but also made easy access to these indicators through a computer interface. Through queries on the database, the very high threaten oasis basins requiring urgent action for their conservation have been identified as well as predictors of the level of exploitation of oasis basins.

Kouakou, Guy Eric Anicet Quassy
2013
Under the pressure of the environmental financiers and within the framework of the reform of its conservation policy of the protected areas, the Côte d’Ivoire State decided to preserve, to valorize spaces protected by the ecotourist approach. The first field of experiment of this approach was the National Park of Islands Ehotilé. But decade after the implementation of this policy, this initiative has difficulty in being set up. The question is to know what are the determining factors of failure of the process of ecotourist exploitation in the PNIE? To answer this question, this research, approached according to a multidisciplinary approach, suggests studying the progress of two experiences of ecotourism in the PNIE (A project introduced by the WWF and financed by the English cooperation, and an other, set up by a local NGO financed by the Global Environment Facility), to identify and analyze the factors of inhibition of the ecotourist process in this park. Analyses (quantitative and qualitative) were made from the data collected in ten waterside villages of the PNIE, through structured or semi-structured interview. These conversations also concerned the state departments (in charge of the preservation and of the tourism), the local authorities, the local administrators, the initiators of projects. We also proceeded to the consultation of several sources of documentation. The obtained results show that the material, legal and institutional conditions were not performed at the time of the political decision-making of implementation of the approach of preservation by the ecotourism. In a general way, the hotel, road infrastructures, the socio-sanitary equipments inside and outside are of inferior quality even non-existent. The tourist development (no observation, runways, landing stage) inside the park has been lacking. It was revealed also no promotional support (advertising, web site, etc.) exists to sell the PNIE. At the legal and institutional level, the legal and institutional requirements are on straddle between those mobilized by the actors of the tourism and those used by the actors of the preservation without synergy between these two groups of participants. The results also allowed to highlight the existence of a multitude of participants in interaction in and the periphery of the PNIE, characterized by differences of interests and logics of action as much at the level of the priorities of actions as means of carrying out the ecotourist exploitation of the PNIE. What was lacking in the attempt of putting in ecotourism of this park, it is the capacity to make compatible these differences of interests and logics of action, and the possibility of coordinating them. Our study also revealed differences of vision and representations towards the resources of the PNIE in the attempt of putting in ecotourism of this park. These differences concern the ancestral dimension, as well as the use values of this protected space. These conflicts are indicator of an elaboration and an inadequate management of the mechanism of ecotourist production in connection with the non-inclusion of the diverse social representations mobilized by the various actors of the projects. Besides, the convergences of representations mentioned with the actors concern "myths". The myth of the “ancestralité” bases itself on the ancestral link of the local residents with the islands of the park and appears for the promoters of the projects of ecotourist development as the element which has to justify the membership of the local populations. There is also a mythical version of the natural potentialities of the park which bases itself on the presence of exceptional species that " we do not find somewhere else ". The myth of the tourism as the vector of protection and development was also indicated. The problem is that, in the process of ecotourist valuation, the participants do not question any more these mythical versions mobilized around the PNIE. The latter appear for these participants as an obvious fact; not arousing question, they are not really worked to become resources. Finally, the results showed that the attempt of development of the ecotourism in the PNIE is marked by a governance, - in terms of piloting of the projects -, characterized by a series of uninsured coordinations or which are failing. The ecotourist projects tended to push aside or to make a weak place to the actors responsible for the park, to the actors of the territorial administration and to the actors of the tourism. In political terms, it was missing a space of coordination and piloting of this coordination. After all, recommendations are made to revitalize and strengthen the conditions of implementation and management of experiences of ecotourism in the PNIE and generally in the parks of Côte d’Ivoire. These recommendations would aim at improving the questions connected to the organizational, regulatory aspects and of planning.

LANDSLIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY PREDICTION IN A MOUNTAINOUS CATCHMENT: THE NARANJO BASIN, WESTERN GUATEMALA
Estrada Orozco, Nick Kenner
2017
In tropical mountain areas, landslides triggered by heavy rainfall represent a natural hazard, especially where meteorological events such as tropical cyclones are recurrent. Rainfall-triggered landslides may also increase in highly seismic active areas. This is the case of Guatemala, located in the Circum-Pacific Belt and between Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, sources of cyclonic events. Although Guatemala is a region where landslides are a widespread phenomenon, landslide inventories, maps and quantitative susceptibility assessments that are useful for land use planners and decision makers are hitherto non-existent. The aim of this research is to produce quantitative landslide susceptibility assessments, using logistic regression multivariate statistical method. The study area is a watershed located in the department of San Marcos (western Guatemala), impacted by a tropical storm event in October 2005. A total of 766 landslides were identified and mapped using orthoimages from 2005. Then, 99 landslides were mapped in 2011 based on field data. The main landslide type is shallow landslide (61 % in 2005), while 39 % of those landslides from 2005 evolved into debris flows. In total, susceptibility models using multivariate probabilistic approach were developed for shallow landslides, evaluating two different strategies for the sample size of non-landslides events and three different numbers of input variable in the models. Susceptibility models were developed for debris flows dataset and the union of both dataset (shallow and debris flows). The comparison of the models and the associated susceptibility maps highlighted 6 significant input variables that are associated with landslide occurences - elevation, slope, aspect, profile curvature, planform curvature and distance to roads. Performance comparisons of models were also carried out. To validate the performance of the model results, the ROC curve was used, as well as the four-fold and confusion matrix plots. A susceptibility map was generated to display the results of the models in terms of probability values. A proposal and discussion on the operational use of susceptibility maps where cutoff values can be chosen to define the lowest and highest landslide susceptibility were also made. These will help land use planners in decision-making and in implementing protective measures.

PRODUCTION DES CLADOCERES DANS LES BASSINS DE LAGUNAGE: MODELISATION ET ANALYSE DE RENTABILITE DE LEUR VALORISATION
Liady, Mouhamadou Nourou Dine
2014

2014
This work traces the geomorphological evolution of the western coast of the tingitane Peninsula (Morocco) in two time scales: the current scale and the Quaternary scale. Geomorphological characteristics have been identified and placed into their morphotectonic and/or morphodynamic contexts. To make our work more interesting, fruitful and realistic, we adopted an empirical approach. Firstly, we based our research on collection of data and analysis of available documents. Secondly, we made measurements, using appropriate techniques to answer specific questions, or to argue the hypotheses. It appears from this study, that the organization of geological units in a NNW-SSE direction has created a rugged shore, mainly in rocky cliff and pocket beaches on the Strait of Gibraltar coast, and a low sandy coast on the Atlantic coast. The geological and geomorphological quaternary history of Gibraltar Strait coast is characterized by a series of marine abrasion stepped and raised surfaces. The history of the Atlantic coast is rather marked by tectonic subsidence. This tectonic subsidence is manifested on the surface by a system of closed depressions (daya) arranged in a NNW-SSE axis, almost parallel to the orientation of geological units. The evolution of the geomorphological depressions is also controlled by the fluvio-marine action and wind activity. The last interglacial period is marked by two transgressive pulsations of eustatic origin. They were recorded at the marine terraces on both coasts. The second pulsation is aged at least 119.6 ± 2.3 ky. After the last interglacial, the central area of the Strait of Gibraltar was raised by an average of 8.1mm/100year from 117ky. The Ouljien was raised to a height of 13 to 16m. The Atlantic coast was stable at 117ky. Marine terraces are 5-6m high. The analysis shows that the current morphodynamics of the Atlantic coast are characterized by a barred beach geomorphology with a high spatio-temporal variability. It appears that a land wind plays a key role in the morphosedimentary evolution of backshore and foreshore. Indeed, the backshore develops, by negative retroaction, a geomorphology with a dune system to slow transport operated by land winds from the east. The foreshore, meanwhile, develops, by a positive retroaction, a system of bar and rip channels to counter a change in slope generated by the wind. On the one hand, risk analysis shows that the succession of anthropic changes at Tangier Bay has brooked the internal sediment balance. Erosion has affected both the sandy and rugged beaches of the eastern sector. The Atlantic coast doesn’t show signs of erosion, but it has a high vulnerability, because it evolves in a closed sedimentary system. On the other hand, the characteristic of a low open ocean coast facilitates the penetration of marine waters within the continent, especially the lower areas. Finally, a barred beach geomorphology creates problems of harbor silting and access disruption.

Kouam Kenmogne, Guy Romain
2013

Assessment of fodder biomass in Senegalese rangelands using earth observation and field data
Diouf, Abdoul Aziz
2016
Senegalese livestock size has largely increased during the last three decades in relation to the population growth. The fodder biomass stock available at the end of the growing season, therefore, becomes increasingly limited to meet feeding needs of pastoral livestock which provides third of the national agricultural wealth. With the reduction of natural grazing lands mostly generated by the expansion of croplands, and the reduction of fodder biomass production due to drought effects, the increase of the livestock size leads to the rangelands overload whose persistence can lead in turn to their degradation. A technique based on a simple linear relationship between the temporal integration of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the ground biomass data, developed in the 1980s, has been operationally applied by the Centre de Suivi Ecologique (CSE) of Dakar (Senegal) to assess the fodder biomass available in rangelands at the end of the growing season. The derived map of total biomass production enables to help pastoral livestock managers as well as national stakeholders against food insecurity and natural resources degradation. Carried out annually, this approach comprises unfortunately some uncertainties as: (1) the saturation drawback of NDVI in areas with high biomass productivity, (2) the temporal scale which is restricted to biomass data of the ongoing year not being used again in the following year, (3) the low predictive ability due to the large time gap between data collection and published results, and (4) the high costs for annual data collection. In addition, although the earth observation (EO) data have largely progressed during the last three decades, this technique has not changed over this period and consequently is not state-of-the-art. To tackle these limitations and advance the traditional method, new statistical models that include new earth observations datasets and historical in situ plant biomass data were developed for estimating and / or predicting the forage availability at the end of the growing season in Senegalese semi-arid rangelands. A backward analysis of the linear regression approach currently applied in Senegal provided evidence that nonlinear regression functions such as Exponential and Power are more suited to estimate the end-of-season total biomass in this region using annual data solely. A completely new methodology using multiple-linear models which include various phenological metrics from the time series of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) and 14 years of in situ total biomass samples was developed. The proposed approach provided more reliable and accurate estimates as compared to the current CSE biomass product. Multiple-linear models developed with specific metrics adapted to ecosystem properties increased the overall accuracy of the fodder biomass estimates and mitigated the saturation of FAPAR obtained with models run across the whole study area. With this new approach, timely information about possible deficits/surplus of total fodder biomass can be provided to stakeholders using phenological metrics that are available relatively early in the growing season. Another new approach based on a machine learning algorithm (i.e., Cubist) was developed, as never done before, to assess herbaceous biomass in Senegalese Sahel. Three Cubist models using FAPAR seasonal metrics and/or agrometeorological variables (i.e., soil water status indicators) were established and compared. The Cubist model including both FAPAR and agrometeorological variables provided the best estimation performance. This model enabled to mitigate the saturation affecting optical remotely sensed vegetation data in areas of high plant productivity as well as the discrepancy between herbaceous biomass and greenness, and corrected therefore for herbaceous biomass underestimations observed with the sole FAPAR based model, particularly in sparsely vegetated areas. In contrast to the date of the growing season onset retrieved from FAPAR seasonal dynamics, the rainy season onset was significantly related to the herbaceous biomass and its inclusion in models could constitute a significant improvement in forecasting risks of fodder biomass deficit. The methods developed in this research provide tools to assess Senegalese forage resources at two levels: herbaceous and total fodder biomass (Herbaceous + woody leaf biomass). They require limited data and free available software and therefore can be easily replicated in other countries of the West African Sahel.

Seck, Aichetou
2014
In Western Africa and more particularly in Senegal, the fishing represents an important sector. This situation involves diverse communities which, for several decades, work in the small- scale fisheries and which print in the sea their own socio- spatial dynamics. Among these, fishermen’s community of Guet-Ndar, a district of the “langue de Barbarie” located on the big Senegalese coast constitute one of the most notable halieutic societies. Very early, this littoral population made the activity of fishing its exclusive speciality. So, those fishermen developed around the sea, under the regime of free access, quite new practices of which various forms of migration along African west coast. However, with the overexploitation of the fish stock, the Guet-Ndar migrant fishing is not without facing confrontations with autochthonous fishermen. This research aims on one hand, at understanding the evolving territoriality of the migrant fishermen of Guet-Ndar through the prism of conflicts which appear on their halieutic space, notably in Cayar and in Mauritania. On the other hand, it tries to see how these sea craftmen adapt and are collectively organizing and redefining their territories through local mobilizations and within the framework of regional policies.

Escobar Jimenez, Kelly
2012
Currently, protected areas and protected natural species are in a state of proliferation all over the world. Landscapes, flagship species, peoples in voluntary isolation, ecosystems, and “biological corridors” are all protected. In order to achieve this, categories of protection at different geographical levels have been mobilized. The processes that allow any one of these categories to become operational within a precise territory are more or less well standardized and have in common, amongst others things, two components that have caught my attention: Firstly, the central role of previous scientific and technical studies, and secondly, the desire to ensure the participation of the populations concerned. How are relations between scientists and the non-scientific public in participatory environmental management? This thesis seeks to answer this question, from the starting point of an analysis of the cognitive dimension of participatory environmental management, i.e. how the production of knowledge affects the modes of existence within protected areas (and consequently their human and nonhuman inhabitants). Building upon the study of daily activities that bring scientists and indigenous peoples into contact in and around the scientific field stations “Yasuní” and “Juri Juri Kawsay” (in the Ecuadorian Amazon), this research describes the relationship between ways of knowing a conflicting object (for example a natural species, a territorial boundary, an isolated people) and the consequences in terms of configuration of that object (in terms of identity, value, and fragility) and its management (administration, use, protection, recovery or abandonment). By mobilizing the approach of Actor-Network theory, this dissertation attempts to outline how mediation between humans and nonhumans, non-scientific and scientific, occurs. It also offers a reflection on how the Agency of an entity (the competence to make make distributed in the humans and nonhumans actors) comes to influence the joint actions. This research can capture the ambiguity, instability, resistance and complexity that still exist in the Amazon, with some unexpected findings along the way, by showing the changes among things and people throughout development projects, land management initiatives, and conservation and science programs. After describing the trajectory of four entities (laboratories, species conservation, territories and subjects), which meet at the Amazonian interfaces where science, conservation and development are in competition, the findings of this dissertation have met two ambitions: to consider the importance of taking into account the complexity and historicity of scientific data and to answer a broader question: What are the relevant factors to take into account when considering the possibilities for joint action between scientists and indigenous populations?

Evlard, Aricia
2013
Since the ‘80s, when the concept of phytoremediation first appeared, a lot of research has been put into studying the efficiency of woody plants in metal extraction. Willows, as fast growing plants and because of their tolerance to difficult edaphic conditions, have been particularly well investigated. In this investigation, the essays were done on Salix clones, which come from a Walloon collection provided by ECOLIRI and ECOLIRIMED projects. The first objective was to study the potential of these local clones by considering not only their ability to extract their pollutants, but also by adding their biomass production to this parameter. We have called the study of these criteria the phenotypic approach to the tolerance of Salix clones to metals. The second added value of this investigation lies in the second objective which aims to complete these phenotypic criteria with physiological and proteomic criteria. These last criteria are often used to study the metal tolerance of plant species, but rarely for willows. The combination of these different approaches gives a expand view of metal tolerance in Salix clones studied in this investigation. As the phenotypical parameters help to answer the extraction ability challenge, the physiological and proteomic approaches give answers linked to the “health” of the willow trees when they grow in the presence of metals. Our results indicate that the clones that produced more biomass were the ones that showed the highest metal concentrations. The clones with lower biomass production showed the same tolerance as the highest producers and our results revealed that growth reduction indicates metal tolerance. Finally, after comparing our results of the metal concentrations obtained in the twigs, to results obtained during the last two decades of research papers, we have concluded that we should reconsider the use of Salix potential in phytoextraction. The first chapter of this investigation was about Salix clones exposed to metals, but, in natural conditions, their roots are colonized by fungi. Thus, their rhizosphere constitutes a separate ecosystem, which is interesting to investigate. The rhizospheric fungi, the first interface between roots and soil pollutants, play an important role in metal tolerance in woody plants. For this reason, the second chapter of this thesis aimed to test the in vitro growth of rhizospheric fungi collected on woody plant roots in the presence of cadmium. The outcome of these essays is that fungal strains have been identified and classified as tolerant to this metal. This chapter thus constitutes a first step in a future study aiming to analyze these strains in association with woody plant roots in the presence of metals.

Using remote sensing (optical and radar) and modeling to support the irrigation management of cereals in a semi-arid region: a case study of the Tadla irrigated perimeter in Morocco
Benabdelouahab, Tarik
2015
Summary Irrigated agriculture is an important strategic sector in Morocco, it accounts for about 45%, on average, of the agricultural Gross Domestic Product, contributing thus to food security and employment. It occupies 15% (about 1.5 million ha) of the total cultivated area in the country. Irrigation scheme managers need to ensure that water is optimally used in the irrigated perimeters and that water shortages are avoided. For large areas under irrigation, this can be achieved through water monitoring at plot level using modeling and satellite-based methodologies. The main objective of this research was to assess the use of optical and radar remote sensing and of crop modeling in the irrigation monitoring and management of wheat in the irrigated perimeter of Tadla. The potential of spectral indices derived from SPOT-5 images was explored for comparing, quantifying and mapping surface water content changes at regional and local levels. Indices were computed using the reflectance in red, near infrared and shortwave infrared bands. Our findings show that the normalized difference water index (NDWIRog) could be used to estimate and map the surface water content of wheat plots, from bare soil to fully covered soil. Backscatter threshold values derived from SAR images were used to detect irrigation water supplies in wheat plots and the optimal acquisition frequency of SAR images was determined in order to ensure continuous monitoring. A field crop model (AquaCrop) was adjusted to simulate durum wheat yields and the temporal evolution of soil moisture status in order to manage and schedule irrigation water supplies and assess their impact on yield. Currently, the approaches described in this paper are being applied independently. This research was intended, therefore, to provide tools to help policy-makers and stakeholders improve irrigation monitoring and mitigate wheat water stress at the field and irrigation perimeter levels in semi-arid areas. Keywords: irrigation management, spectral index, wheat, backscattering, SAR, semi-arid, Morocco.

2015
The apparatus of conservation at the ecoregional scale integrating natural landscape and cultural landscapes in the Amazon basin has been introduced by international conservation NGOs since the beginning of the 90s when the term hotspot was invented to designate the importance of "mega-diversity "of tropical forests for the survival of humanity. The representation of environmental problems in the Amazon region as serious threats to life on the planet entered the political agenda of the international community becoming a matter of priority attention. To find solutions to this expanding threat, scientists, activists and interested parties have reflected on some formulas, innovative programs and strategies in order that cooperation and international aid could favor the action of effective conservation and sustainable development. The problem of resource degradation of biodiversity, and the loss of the values of cultural diversity of Amazonian peoples is since then conceived as a challenge that goes beyond national political interests, becoming a global issue. Bolivia was a breeding ground for these pioneering efforts, they have made a pragmatic view of international aid with new tools and effective techniques to combat emerging threats, one of them are financial mechanisms for conservation planning. These have entered the Bolivian legal system from the 80 which coincides with the modernization of the state, an ambitious development plan supported by the implementation of neoliberal measures to promote economic growth, administrative decentralization as a new form to exercise power by delegating powers to the departmental and municipal levels, popular participation, as legitimacy methodology, defining local actors and regional planning policy as a useful management of natural resources for sustainable development. International actors of conservation, a group of scientific elite and environmental activists in the country and leaders of local indigenous movements have played an important role before and after this neoliberal modernization in the implementation of an ecorregional conservation apparatus in the Bolivian Amazon. The objective of this transdisciplinaria research, is an ethnographic description, based on the theoretical and methodological repertoire of legal anthropology and sociology of ANT Translation, of how the practices and strategies of conservation at the ecoregional scale through its technical, financial and legal instruments configure the territories, affect social relations and transform representations and practices of the nature of Amazonian peoples Mosetene, Tsimane' Tacana, Quechua-Tacana and Leco. The traditional spaces of these peoples are in total or partially overlapping with the current Natural Park and Integrated Management Area Madidi and Biosphere Reserve and Indigenous Territory Pilón Lajas implemented as protected areas during the 90 In this context, challenges and current controversies looming over the planning and use of space at different scales between actors of the policies of sustainable development and conservation, local political elites and indigenous peoples.

Garba, Issa
2017
This work was carried out on the pastoral zone of Niger, the main objective was to contribute to the improvement of the methods of forage yields predicting mainly in the Sahel and especially in Niger. This is specifically to validate the model BIOMASAH of ARC; test the MEIA model; to establish a reference model by multiple linear regression; test the similarity method and finally compare the methods. The work was carried out on the one hand with the data measured on the ground by the MEIA from 2001 to 2012, reel rainfall of Niger observations network, meteorological parameters from ECMWF and also with satellite images as SPOT NDVI VEGETATION and MODIS, RFE2 of FEWS NET. Validation of BIOMASAH model was made by t and Wilcoxon tests to compare reel biomass and outputs of the model. Pearson, Kendall and Spearman correlation testing was also made. The MEIA model performance was tested by confronting the results between and within SPOT VEGETATION and MODIS sensors, by comparing R² and RMSE from the integral and maximum NDVI as a predictor of forage yield. Average comparisons by parametric and nonparametric tests were also made to compare the results. The reference model (RM) was produced by multiple linear regression with stepwise method. The selection of variables was based on adjusted R² and RMSE and the LOOCV leave one out cross validation to calculate R² for validation, we made also systematic diagnosis of residues for better characterization of the model. The similarity method was performed using the R², MAD and RMSE as a criterion, the profile of the vegetation growth period of each pixel was plotted for all years. Then we compare the profile of the target year with those of other years to identify the similar year. One hand the results of similarity were compared with actual data with the Pearson correlation test, Spearman and Kendall and secondly using t and Wilcoxon tests to compare means. Comparison of models was made on the basis of R², Adjusted R² and RMSE. Model BIOMASAH result on significant difference between average (p <0.001). Pearson correlations, Kendall and Spearman are low. Regarding the MEIA model, globally R² (0.56) is best, there’s no difference to use MODIS NDVI or SPOT vegetation, the RMSE is 367 kg.ha-1. R² and RMSE vary greatly from one year to another. On a global scale the multiple linear model gave a good R² adjusted (0.69) and RMSE (282 kg / ha) the difference between the calculated and the RMSE of validation is 2.72 kg. Comparing averages of the similarity to the real ones showed that there are no significant differences (p <0.001) for R² with the differences are significant against the same threshold for the MAD and RMSE. The Comparison of the models shows that the multiple linear regression one (reference model) is the best. Research should continue with index like LAI, FARAR and EVI.

APPLICATION OF GEOMATICS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF PASTORAL RESOURCES IN MOROCCO
Mahyou, Hamid
2012
Rangeland or natural arid pastures of Morocco are defined as ecosystems where there is a natural or semi-natural vegetation composed of steppes, shrubs and grassland used mainly for livestock production as climate and soil are unsuitable to agriculture. The arid rangelands of Morocco occupy an area of over 33 million hectares between the isohyets of 100 and 400 mm. These areas represent livelihoods for thousands of people and protect the country from desertification. The main objective of this study is to provide scientific community and decision-makers methodological tools for assessing arid rangelands, based on geomatics and biophysics data. This study is divided in four parts: 1. The first part presents an overview of the threat of the desertification, emphasizes on the causes and consequences of rangeland degradation in Morocco, from literature sources, statistics, climate data and maps. Morocco rangelands are located in ten different pastoral zones that differ from each other by their floristic composition, soil and climatic conditions. According to Globcover map these rangelands are mainly composed by bare soil, herbaceous vegetation, shrubs and deciduous savanna mosaic / shrub or forest. The largest pastoral zones are: the Saharan zone, Pre-Saharan, the Oriental plateaus and the Valley of Moulouya. These zones are the most degraded with respectively 97, 89 and 69% of their total area. Available information on several pilot areas shows that the Moroccan rangelands are degraded due to many factors, which include overgrazing, cultivation, population increase and climate variation. 2. The second part of the study demonstrates the usefulness of remote sensing for assessing drought in arid rangelands of Morocco. Bi-weekly TERRA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS 250 meters) data were used for this purpose. A Preliminary mapping by using Landsat TM5 of major land cover types was carried out to extract the pasture area. A comparison of annual and seasonal Normalised Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and rainfall during the time period of 2000–2008 were carried out. Results show significant correlations of either NDVI (r= 0.72**) or VCI (r=0.42*) with past season (3 months) rainfall. NDVI variation is a good indicator of vegetation changes and consequently can give a reliable indication on drought conditions in the study area. NDVI values lower than 0.2 are indicative of drought occurrence. NDVI values between 0.20 and 0.28 indicate average weather conditions and values higher than 0.28 correspond to humid conditions. 3. The third part presents an original knowledge-based approach for mapping the degradation of rangelands in North Africa. The study area is located in the high plateaus of eastern Morocco which include 3.5 million hectares of arid rangeland steppes. The approach consists in using datasets derived from Landsat TM satellite imagery, lithology, phytogeographic data and field indicators. The field indicators are: the steppes composition, perennial vegetation cover, annual perennial production, grazing level and the prevalence of rangeland cultivation. Results show that the knowledge-based approach is a valid method for evaluating rangeland degradation. The proposed knowledge-based approach discriminated between rangeland categories that would not have been discernible using only remote sensing. Overall classification accuracy of rangeland degradation obtained using this approach was 93%. This approach revealed that 11, 36 and 30% of the study area have shown very severe, severe and moderate degradation level, respectively. 4. The fourth part concerns the assessment of Alfa grass (Stipa tenacissima) tussocks at various degradation levels of Alfa grass steppes in the high plateaus of eastern Morocco, based on field hyperspectral data (350 – 2500 nm) and digital images during fall and spring seasons. Digital images of Alfa grass tussocks were taken using a digital camera to classify of the tussocks according to their proportion in green leaves (green, mixed and dry tussock). Assess software (Image Analysis Software for Plant Disease Quantification, APS 2002) was used to obtain the proportion of greenness in each tussock. Hyperspectral data of three states of tussocks (Green, Mixed and Dry tussock leaves) were collected within three degradation levels of Alfa grass steppes (Slight, Moderate and Severe degradation) with the ASD FieldSpec® 3 spectroradiometer. Paired t-test, Normalized difference spectral reflectance (NDSR) and Stepwise Discriminate Analysis were used to discriminate between various tussock status and different Alfa grass steppes. The results indicate that Alfa grass had shown an intraspecific variability in reflectance spectra. The proportion of green leaves in Alfa grass tussock strongly influences the spectral response. The discrimination of different Alfa grass tussock status was better during fall than spring. The spectral behavior of Alfa grass tussock is problematic for the mapping and the assessment of Alfa grass steppes by conventional remote sensing techniques.

Seagrass macrophytodetritus: a copepod hub - Species diversity, dynamics and trophic ecology of the meiofauna community in Posidonia oceanica leaf litter accumulations
Mascart, Thibaud
2015
Macrophytodetritus is a heterogeneous mixture of detrital material that accumulates on submerged unvegetated sand patches amid vast Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. Several vagile invertebrates are present in substantial biomass and biodiversity. Among these invertebrates, meiofauna (fauna between 38µm and 1mm) is ubiquitous and seems to play a key-feature in this dynamic and patchy system. Coastal ecosystems are under the direct effect of anthropogenic disturbance and degradation. Extra research is crucially needed to understand better the dynamics of coastal vegetation, in order to have a more successful restauration of these regressing ecosystems. In this context, the main goal of this PhD research was triple: (1) characterising in situ the physico-chemistry and the composition of the macrophytodetritus accumulations in the Calvi Bay, Corsica, (2) identifying the diversity of the associated meiofauna communities, especially harpacticoid copepods together with unravelling the origin of the present copepods and (3) characterizing the trophic ecology of the copepod communities in the macrophytodetritus at the specific and eco-morphological level. This research showed that macrophytodetritus biomass is composed on average for 75% of dead P. oceanica seagrass leaves shed after senescence. Attached to the surface of the seagrass leaves numerous micro- and macroepiphytes are present, representing on average 10% of the total biomass. The remaining part is mainly constituted of drift material, like detached P. oceanica shoots and epilithic macroalgae. A seasonal pattern is observed regarding the amount of accumulated material and the physico-chemical composition inside the accumulation. Wind-induced hydrodynamics is the responsible driver behind the variability of the macrophytodetritus and consequently it has a major impact on the faunal communities already present in a macrophytodetritus accumulation. Previous studies showed that the presence of macrofaunal invertebrates (> 1 mm) in high amounts contributes to the degradation of the detritus. Similarly, this study proves the ubiquitous presence of meiofauna in macrophytodetritus. Depending on the season, densities from 20.10³ to 160.10³ meiofaunal organisms per square metre of accumulation were recorded. Copepods were the most abundant taxon (> 50%) of which 87% belonged to the order Harpacticoida. Nematodes were the second most abundant taxon, representing on average 18% of the total meiofauna densities. A total of 61 copepod species were found in Calvi Bay macrophytodetritus accumulations and adjacent habitats (bare sand, seagrass and water column), wherefrom 85% were shared amongst these habitats, underlining the high colonization capabilities of copepods. Active colonization occurred within 24h through species-specific dispersal pathways. Certain species were more avid to colonize, resulting in a colonizer-competitor trade-off among the copepod community. Eco-morphological characteristics seemed to be responsible for the dispersal potential. However, the variety of the composition of the copepod community suggested that other factors also contributed to the attractiveness of the structurally complex macrophytodetritus habitat. The isotopic niches of four abundant copepod species, representing four different eco-morphological groups were identified: Ectinosoma dentatum (mesopsammic-type), Diosaccus tenuiremis (phytal-type), Tisbe furcata (epibenthic-type) and Clausocalanus arcuicornis (water-column-type). Based on stable isotope analysis, fatty acid profiling and Bayesian mixing model, results suggested an interspecific diversity which would indicate a species-specific resource partitioning. C. arcuicornis mainly fed on suspended organic matter, while D. tenuiremis thrived mainly on epiphytes (mostly diatoms). E. dentatum was dependent on the seasonal availability of food sources, while T. furcata fed on a heterogeneous mixture of sources. Presumably none of the species directly assimilated dead seagrass leaf litter. Overall, by combining in situ sampling, novel mesocosm experiment, biomarkers and mixing models, this study displayed the carrying capacity of macrophytodetritus to support a large amount of meiofauna and a wide diversity of copepod species. The morphological differences among copepod species seem to allow specialization towards habitat preferences, (physical habitat preferences and colonization potential) and towards resource preferences (food partitioning). Macrophytodetritus seems thus to be a suitable home, or a temporary hub for a diverse copepod community. Finally, this dynamic and patchy habitat, prone to swift changes and situated at the crossing of different ecosystems, plays a major role in coastal ecology.

Bigumandondera, Patrice
2014
Summary On-site sanitation sector in sub-Saharan African is a complex area that requires the involvement of a multidimensional approach mobilizing various actors and competencies. The main purpose of this thesis is to conduct a study integrating the three links in the sanitation chain that compose the on-site sanitation sector, namely the upstream links regarding sanitation facilities installed at private homes, the intermediate link for evacuation of sludge and transport to a treatment site and the downstream link for disposal and treatment sludge. A sociological approach mobilizing both survey techniques and on-site observation has allowed understanding the on-site sanitation practices in the field of developing countries. Methodologies to initiate corrective action with respect to what is done so far are utilized. Such as a method for evaluating on-site sanitation using an indicator that is a combination of indicators developed taking into account the entire sanitation sector. At the same time, a procedure to select sanitation technologies based on a number of criteria was adopted. The proposed technologies as well as criteria used for their implementation follow the same logic as previously, i.e. that consisting of taking into account the entire sanitation sector. This study also examined the design procedure of the septic tank and of evaluated its performance on site given that it is used in many sanitation systems. Settling column tests were carried out show that the effluent who enters in the septic tank settles well but settable solids remain in the effluent leaving the septic tank remaining, parameter that needs to be taken into account in the establishment of the infiltration bed after the septic tank. Quantification of sludge accumulation rates in the septic tank shows that for a pump out period every 4 years, the design can be based on an average sludge accumulation rate of 0.22L/person/day. These values (as expressed in g COD/person/day) are useful both to assess withdrawal, but also to design sludge's disposal site. Analyses of these sludges reveal a poorly biodegradable product with a non-biodegradable COD fraction reaching 47.5%, thus as a product with a low methanogenic potential, limiting the interest of its application in anaerobic digestion as a substrate. But, their co-treatment with organic solids waste in a partial anaerobic co-digestion process followed by composting. In this case sludges are considered as digestion inoculums. Preliminary results are encouraging, particularly in terms of total time needed for the entire process. Among other advantages, this process reduces handling of the waste being processed and provides two end products directly recoverable: compost and methane. So we hope that this research will contribute to the establishment in African countries for more efficient on-site sanitation, able to meet the targets set by international organizations.

Total Electron Content reconstruction using triple frequency GNSS signals
Spits, Justine
2012
Nowadays, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) provide accurate three dimensional positioning and navigation anywhere and anytime on the Earth’s surface and are being utilized in numerous civilian and military applications. The US Global Positioning System (GPS) is currently being modernized to transmit radio signals on an additional third frequency, while the European Galileo is a newly developed system which will transmit on three civil frequency bands. One of the major error sources affecting GNSS is the delay caused when the signals pass through the ionosphere on their way to the Earth’s surface. This delay is inversely proportional to the square of the carrier frequency, and directly proportional to the Total Electron Content (TEC) of the ionosphere. In the last 20 years, several techniques using dual frequency GNSS measurements have been developed to estimate the TEC. With these techniques, systematic errors are confined to at least - 2.5 and 2.5 TECU for a mid-latitude site, and to at least - 5.5 and 5 TECU for a low-latitude location. In the last decades, knowledge about the ionosphere has grown considerably thanks to the use of GNSS measurements, and in turn the GNSS have highly benefited from this improved knowledge. Nowadays the availability of triple frequency GNSS signals enables the development of new processing techniques. We have therefore dedicated this work to developing a TEC reconstruction methodology based on triple frequency GNSS measurements and aimed at improving the accuracy of the final TEC values with regards to existing techniques. The structure of this study is as follows. Firstly, we provide information about GNSS, focusing on concepts, definitions and assumptions which will be used throughout this study. Then, we introduce the concepts of ionospheric propagation of radio signals and give a review of the literature on existing techniques used to extract the TEC with dual frequency GNSS measurements. We further present the complete design of the triple frequency TEC reconstruction methodology. We start by giving the set of combinations which allows us to resolve the original integer ambiguities, then we address the principles of TEC reconstruction, and finally we give an accuracy assessment of the computed TEC values. We also present an innovative technique to calibrate the satellite and receiver code hardware delays. We continue with testing the features developed on a simulated GPS and Galileo observation dataset, as well as on a real GIOVE observation dataset. Finally, we conclude this work by providing a critical overview of our investigations and suggesting various improvements of the current limitations.

Dupont, Josselin
2014
During the last decades, we have experienced a general rise of real estate prices as well as the reinforcement of sustainable development issues. This resulted in a "renewal" of land policy in France, with the development of “Etablissements publics fonciers” (EPF). At the same time, there is a withdrawal from the public sphere against a dominant financial logic. In this context, our thesis questions the need to develop land policy at the regional scale. To do so, we have examined the situation of Brittany on the basis of several partnerships (Regional Council, DREAL and EPF of Brittany, ADEF, COST and joint supervision with the University of Liege), with research materials gathered from three distinct research terrains (in Brittany, in France and in Europe). This leaded to a PhD structured in two main parts: on the one hand, a regional diagnostic on land issues for Brittany with a list of mobilized land data and, on the second hand, an original analysis of the EPF tool. Our results show that Brittany is facing fundamental land issues (fast land artificialization due to specific modes of living and demographic dynamics) that impact in different ways the regional territory (rural-urban and Armor-Argoat disparities). Our results also show that the choice of a regional land policy embodied in the creation of an EPF is at the same time very common from a French perspective and very original from a European perspective. In conclusion, we note that the effectiveness of EPF is not yet actually demonstrated and we propose recommendations to Brittany’s decision-makers.

A framework for using decision-support tools at various spatial scales for the management of irrigated agriculture in semi-arid West-Africa
Wellens, Joost
2014
The Kou watershed, situated in the Southwestern part of Burkina Faso, has succumbed since a couple of decades to a typical theater play of anarchistic water management. With its 1.800 km², this small watershed includes the second largest city of Burkina Faso (Bobo-Dioulasso), a former state run irrigated rice scheme and several informal agricultural zones. Despite the abundance of water resources, most water users find themselves regularly faced with shortages due to an increase in population and low irrigation efficiencies. Local stakeholders are hence in need of easy to use and low-cost decision support tools for the monitoring and exploitation of the water resources at different spatial and user levels. A top-to-bottom string of adapted water management tools has successfully been installed to tackle the problems: from watershed (top) to field level (bottom), not to mention the 1200 ha irrigation scheme. Land use maps have been derived from satellite and aerial images. Combined with data from a network of hydrologic gauging stations, regional water use maps were established. Hot spots in inefficient water use could be geographically identified and more detailed actions undertaken. Scheme Information Management Information System (SIMIS) was put in place for the management of the regions irrigated rice scheme. A more equitable distribution for the ever diminishing available water resources could be elaborated. A public-private partnership was installed to guarantee its sustainability. Day to day water use on irrigated plots was monitored by soil humidity and crop canopy measurements. A simple field-crop-water balance model AquaCrop was calibrated and validated, and is used by extension workers to draft optimal irrigation charts. Each tool is applied independently, requiring only limited data; but their combined results contribute to an improved integrated water management.

Long-term study of biogenic volatile organic compound exchanges in a forest ecosystem
Laffineur, Quentin
2012
The terrestrial biosphere, especially forest ecosystems, emits large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which have a significant impact on the atmosphere’s chemical and physical characteristics. In particular, VOCs are precursors in the formation of ozone and sec-ondary organic aerosols. Isoprene and monoterpenes dominate the total VOC emissions, and methanol is one of the most abundant atmospheric VOCs due to its longer half-life than the other two. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate (using the eddy covariance technique and a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer) the mechanisms of VOC (isoprene, monoterpene and methanol) emission and/or deposition at the scale of a temperate climate forest ecosystem (Vielsalm, Belgium) comprising several species (Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea Abies and Pseudotsuga menziessi). The eddy covariance technique is very suitable for studying VOC emission/deposition mechanisms at ecosystem level as it does not interfere with the functioning of the ecosystem and it has very good temporal resolution (half an hour). It was used for several months at the Vielsalm site without any major interruption to the measurements. The first measurement period ran from early July to late November 2009 and the second from late March to late November 2010. As well as measuring the VOC exchanges by eddy covari-ance, the climate parameters controlling the exchange mechanisms were also measured. During both these periods the methanol, acetaldehyde, acetone, isoprene, methyl vinyl ke-tone/methacrolein, monoterpene, acetic acid (2010) and formic acid (2010) fluxes were meas-ured. The highest emission levels observed were isoprene and monoterpenes along with methanol, which unlike the first two also showed depositions. The thesis therefore naturally focused on studying these three fluxes, in view of the important role played by these three compounds in atmospheric chemistry and hence the scientific community’s interest in refining the parametrisation of these compounds’ ecosystem/atmosphere exchange models. The study of the isoprene, monoterpene and methanol fluxes has been written up in three original articles which form the main body of this thesis. Because of the heterogeneity of the ecosystem studied, the first essential study concerned the identification of VOC-emitting species. This was done with the aid of a flux footprint model combined with a map of the species occurring on the site. This analysis showed that the main monoterpene emitter was Fagus sylvatica followed, to a lesser extent, by Abies alba, Picea Abies and Pseudotsuga menziessi. In contrast to the literature, the analysis showed Abies alba to be a probable isoprene emitter but the presence of Picea Abies, a known isoprene emitter, ruled out absolute certainty on that point. The isoprene fluxes were observed by day only, unlike the monoterpene fluxes which were observed both day and night. Diurnal flux analysis clearly showed temperature and light to be the two main variables controlling emissions. Combining this analysis with a study of the close relationship between isoprene/monoterpene emissions and photosynthesis revealed the plants’ de novo biosynthetic production mechanisms, an original aspect at ecosystem scale. From the occurrence of nocturnal monoterpene emissions it was possible to determine that de novo monoterpene production emitted directly into the atmosphere (as in the case of isoprene) was not the only source of the emissions observed. Withdrawals from monoterpene sinks located in plant organs or in the soil can also be monoterpene sources. Studying the relationship between isoprene/monoterpene fluxes and light, distinguishing between cloudy and sunny conditions, showed that for the same light intensity the emissions were higher in cloudy con-ditions than in sunshine. Similarly, a study of the relationship between isoprene fluxes and photosynthesis in cloudy/sunny conditions suggested that de novo isoprene production is greater in leaves above the canopy than in leaves within the canopy. Long-term measurement of isoprene and monoterpene emissions enabled seasonal changes in the mechanisms observed to be studied and more fully understood. As well as providing an understanding of the mechanisms, this research also resulted in quantification of the seasonal changes in the key parameters for modelling isoprene/monoterpene emissions. Methanol exchanges were generally positive (emissions) by day and negative (depositions) at night. Overall, methanol depositions were predominant in summer and autumn but in the mi-nority in spring. On average, the Vielsalm site behaved like a methanol sink, which contradicts all the other research published to date. An original model was developed for identifying the mechanisms responsible for short-term and long-term methanol emissions/depositions. The consistency between the measurements and the model simulations suggested that the main processes controlling methanol exchanges in summer could be attributed, in the short term, to (water-soluble) methanol adsorption/desorption occurring in the films of water on leaf surfaces and/or on the soil surface and, in the long term, to methanol destruction by a biological and/or chemical degradation process also occurring on the surface of leaves and/or the soil. A study of the difference between the measurements and the model, in spring, indicated the possibility of biosynthetic methanol production by the plants. This production was apparently controlled mainly by temperature, but it could not be shown in summer when methanol adsorption/desorption processes dominated. The literature on ecosystem-atmosphere exchanges of isoprene, monoterpenes and, to a lesser extent, methanol is extensive. Nevertheless, what makes this research original is the spatio-temporal scale used. We are in fact working at ecosystem scale, and not at leaf or branch scale as in most other cases. Moreover, our measurements cover a timescale from half an hour to a full growing season, which is rarely found in the literature. This has resulted in a better under-standing of these compounds’ production and exchange mechanisms. To be precise, the methanol flux study is currently unique in its description and understanding of the deposition mechanisms.

Kasprzyk, Jean-Paul
2015
Technological advances in recent decades have created a massive acquisition of digital data whose volume grows exponentially. To efficiently extract the information they contain, powerful tools have been developed to collect, store and analyze these data. These tools are gathered in a discipline called “business intelligence”. Among them, data warehouses are responsible for archiving data by structuring them in a multidimensional way (time, space or others). They are called data hypercubes or data cubes when they are limited to three dimensions. Hypercubes can supply OLAP (On Line Analytical Processing) systems that aim at quickly synthesizing information in interactive tables and charts for decision-makers from various fields: marketing, environment, criminology, etc. Thus, users can navigate into hypercubes using OLAP operations such as slicing on dimension members (e.g. data aggregation for the month of January in the time dimension), or drilling into hierarchies (e.g. switching from the “year” level to the “month” level in the time dimension). When OLAP is coupled with spatial analysis techniques supplied by geographic information systems (GIS), a map interface then improves the exploration of data: OLAP operations can be applied to dimensions defined in the geographical space (spatial drilling or spatial slicing). This kind of tool is called SOLAP (Spatial OLAP). SOLAP tools currently available on the market all suffer from the same deficiency: they are unable to represent spatial dimensions (X, Y) in a continuous way. This representation is nevertheless essential for the management of spatially continuous phenomena (temperature, pollution, etc.) but also for visualizing spatially discrete events (product sales, crimes, etc.) while minimizing the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP). This kind of visualization is used especially by the police to predict the location of future crimes through hotspot maps which are generated by the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) method. In the field of GIS, raster data (as opposed to vector data) enable effective representation of spatial continuity through digital georeferenced grids. Whereas current SOLAP tools only consider vector data, our research uses the raster model to integrate spatial continuity into the multidimensional structure of a data warehouse feeding a SOLAP ("raster SOLAP"). Despite its underutilization in the SOLAP literature, the raster model has many similarities with a particular kind of data cube: the MOLAP cube (Multidimensional OLAP). Like a satellite image (raster) representing the two planimetric spatial dimensions and one "spectral band" dimension, a MOLAP cube is a three dimensional array whose cells’ coordinates (similar to raster pixels) enable an efficient indexation of dimensions’ members (describing the analyzed facts). In a first original model that we call "raster cube" we define the bases for a three-dimensional raster SOLAP, starting from the definition of a MOLAP cube. Unlike vector SOLAP - where spatiality is attached to a semantic dimension through pointers to geometries - our model directly integrates spatial dimensions (X, Y) in the multidimensional structure of the data warehouse. With this original feature, any geographical entity (country, building, road, etc.) can be imported on the fly as a member in the analysis of the user, which is hardly possible with conventional vector SOLAP tools. An extension of this SOLAP model, called "raster hypercube", is then developed by entrusting the management of extra non-spatial dimensions to a relational database management system (Relational OLAP or ROLAP). The raster hypercube is then populated by KDE raster fields representing crime densities, which are defined in a continuous space (raster dimensions) through time and crime types (ROLAP dimensions). Our model is able to combine the production of hotspot maps at different scales of analysis with SOLAP navigation operations: slicing on spatial or non-spatial members, and drilling into the hierarchy of spatial or non-spatial dimensions. Our raster hypercube model is validated by an operating prototype which is based on open source tools only. Several datasets are integrated through KDE fields, including crime data from London and Seattle. At the end of our work, the results of a comparative study between raster SOLAP and vector SOLAP demonstrate that hybrid vector/raster SOLAP architectures present the same interest for spatial data as hybrid ROLAP/MOLAP architectures do for purely semantic data (management of detailed hypercubes

Governance of plant health and management of crop diversity - the case of common bean health management among members of the association Croqueurs de Carottes
Klaedtke, Stephanie
2017
All over the globe, networks of seed growers are cultivating crop diversity in fields and gardens. Their contribution to the maintenance of this diversity has been studied, but research has widely left aside their management of plant health. The governance of bean health practiced by an association of artisanal seed companies, Croqueurs de Carottes, is approached as a case study in the objective of specifying how management of crop diversity and governance of plant health are articulated. Their concern for the governance of bean health is elucidated from an agroecological perspective, taking an interdisciplinary and transformative approach. Actor-network theory constitutes the backbone of the thesis, situated between agronomy and sociology and drawing upon a threefold research device: on-farm experiments, semi-directive interviews and participant observation. The Croqueurs' approach to bean health is described as in situ approach, in which plant populations are considered healthy if they are able to live with potential plant pathogens and adapt to their growing environments. Relying on ecological interactions, competences of plant health management are distributed throughout the production system. Both for plant health and crop diversity management, a seed lot is determined by a complex system of interactions. A clear boundary distinguishing plant populations from their growing environment cannot be drawn. This implies (i) that plant health must be judged upon in situ in the plants' growing environment and (ii) that the governance of plant health must be considered at the collective scale.

Ionosphere Modelling for Galileo Single Frequency Users
Bidaine, Benoit
2012
Nowadays the ionosphere constitutes one of the most often modelled natural media. Indeed each GPS receiver among nearly two million units sold daily throughout the world runs a model to mitigate the ionospheric effect affecting the signal propagation from the satellites. This propagation is delayed by the free electrons in the atmosphere so that the navigation signals appear to travel distances larger than actual ones by 7 m on average. Hence this delayed propagation deteriorates the positioning accuracy deemed on a 10−m level for mass-market applications mainly involving single frequency users. Tomorrow the European navigation system Galileo will offer a new mitigation strategy to single frequency users. This strategy will rely on the NeQuick ionospheric model and associated broadcast information. To be properly implemented, it must be extensively described to future Galileo users. These users will also wonder about its effectiveness in accounting for the ionospheric delay. The PhD research covered by the present thesis has built on Belgian expertise in ionosphere monitoring to investigate the NeQuick model and its use for Galileo. It began with the collection and handling of ionosphere measurements including GPS data. It analysed various situations at different places in the world encompassing a whole year (2002). This PhD thesis provides the ins and outs of the Galileo Single Frequency Ionospheric Correction Algorithm. It gathers an algorithm description, a performance evaluation and a variant investigation. In the shape of a paper collection, it discloses many figures as visual entry-points into the juxtaposed text and includes many references allowing to dig into the details. The algorithm performances are usefully characterised both in terms of delay mitigation and positioning accuracy. On the one hand, the residual ionospheric delay reaches 31% for the chosen sites and year. On the other hand, the positioning accuracy amounts to 6 m horizontally and 9.3 m vertically. The performance evaluation allowed to emphasise several aspects of the Galileo ionospheric correction. This correction depends largely on the modelling of the topside, the upper part of the ionosphere, which hosts more complex physical processes. It owes its good performances to data ingestion, the model adaptation technique to actual measurements underlying the Galileo algorithm. It does not necessarily provide highly correlated correction levels in terms of delay on the one hand and positioning on the other. It enables the definition of alternative regional procedures following a compatible design but coping with its weaknesses. The present thesis paves the way for future work related to ionosphere modelling for Galileo single frequency users. It supplies comparative information for the algorithm assessment in the framework of successive phases of Galileo deployment. It establishes a conceptual basis for an Assisted Ionospheric Correction Algorithm (A-ICA) disseminating more flexible ionospheric information thanks to the integration of Global Navigation Satellite Systems and telecommunications.

Dubois, Charline
2014
To cope with the economic uncertainties of the changes, transformations, and transitions affecting current European and world agriculture, many farmers are rethinking the purposes of their business and are looking to diversify their activities. Taking advantage of certain assets related to their operation and of opportunities for tourism development in the region (such as availability of buildings, subsidies related to ecology and environment images), some of them have chosen agritourism, a tourist activity proposed by the farmer on his/her farm. The literature includes many studies on this topic, but there is no consensus on terminology, definitions, and concepts: they vary from one author to another and evolve over time. Having distinguished different agritourist typologies in which accommodation is a basic element, we have personally chosen to study agritourism defined as "all tourist and leisure activities and services present in a working farm". Wallonia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, our geographical research areas, are neighbouring entities, with similar agriculture, and their tourist markets offer some similarities. Included in rural tourism, agritourism is nevertheless marginal compared to the overall tourist product offered. Some successes might suggest that agritourism could be the panacea against the crisis in agriculture. But is this always the case? Agritourism should be defined, localized, and differentiated. Working on these two periurban entities of Western Europe which are not yet discussed in the literature, we wanted to understand and to identify agritourist dynamics. We wanted to understand the geographic relationship between agritourism, periurban countryside, local resources, and agricultural and tourist specializations. We wanted to understand the logic of the emergence of tourism on a farm and the links between tourist and agricultural functions in a specific spatial context. Finally, we wanted to understand the integration of the motivations of different types of tourists and their reasons for visiting particular regional and local contexts. To do this, we analyse both the location and the agritourist geographical position in relation to the different markets. To meet the objectives, we conducted a comparative heuristic analysis of agritourism in both territories. We interviewed key organisational representatives (31 persons), we made field observations, documents comparisons... We conducted interviews with various Walloon and Luxembourg farmers (34 life histories) affording different agritourist practices that we synthesized by circumstantial geographical sketches. We conducted surveys with potential tourists (1148surveys) in seven Walloon and Luxembourg tourist spots. These steps and the statistical and cartographic processing based on the results allowed us to build a heuristic geographical model of the Walloon and Luxembourg agritourism. The experiences of farmers interviewed allowed us to understand the position of the agritourist system in its spatial context. Each of them develops opportunities and experience threats (economic, social, from heritage) in connection with the launch of the project, a true survival kit in some cases. It appears that agritourism is not always a panacea for farmers. On the farm, the tourist function comes after the agricultural one and is based on the latter, but the agricultural function also benefits from the tourist function because both activities are related. The emergence of tourism is an autonomous decision of the farmers who can be influenced by other actors, including authorities, but also by other factors such as the existence of a local demand or the regional real estate pressure. There is no particular profile of tourists visiting agritourism, but some features, including those of family, are more favourable to the experience of this type of tourism. Definitions and representations as well as the reasons and expectations differ depending on the characteristics of the interviewed tourists: urban or rural origin, level of experience. Three agritourist profiles were also highlighted: those seeking accommodation in a rural environment, those who think about accommodation linked to gastronomy, those who prefer accommodation that would be a comfortable basis from which to tour in a tourist area. The comparison between the experiences of farmers and the expectations of tourists shows that there is a risk of developing different organizational temporalities in the farm "open" to tourists as well as of favouring unbalanced images of agritourism, which could lead to a vision and a promotion of agriculture which does not correspond to its regional reality. By combining the different results and by linking the typology of the Walloon and Luxembourg agritourist products, the types of rural areas and the geographical components, it appears that agritourism should not only be analysed according to the environmental dimensions, but that the analysis must also take into account other factors such as accessibility, local communities, hospitality, rural development policies, the real estate market, the agricultural orientation of farm operations, as well as the degree of complementarity with tourist spots. We have demonstrated that agritourism, combining agriculture with tourism, is not developing, either everywhere, or in the same manner, and differs between different types of periurban countryside, depending on local resources. Moreover, agritourism is not always a solution for all countrysides, nor always a path for each farmer, nor always a perfect tourist destination for all tourists. However, even if strict regionalization of agritourism does not seem possible when we consider all the factors involved in the different regions, trends may emerge depending on agritourist types. There is thus a link between agritourism type and countryside type, which the heuristic model we propose should allow to improve in order to increase the convergence between the expectations of the different stakeholders.

Detection of past and future atmospheric circulation changes over the North Atlantic region with the help of an automatic circulation type classification
Belleflamme, Alexandre
2015
Future projections of the atmospheric circulation over the Northern Hemisphere high latitudes, especially the North Atlantic, have high uncertainties and some of the projected changes are opposed to circulation changes that have been observed since the 2000s. In this thesis, we focus on three particular aspects of the past and projected future summertime atmospheric circulation over the broader North Atlantic region. First, we analyse whether the 2007-2012 summertime anticyclonic anomaly over the Beaufort Sea, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and Greenland might rather be due to global warming or to the internal variability of the atmospheric circulation by putting it in perspective with the circulation variability over the last 150 years given by five reanalysis datasets. Then, this analysis is extended for the future circulation projected towards 2100 by CMIP3 and CMIP5 General Circulation Models (GCMs) over Greenland. Finally, we evaluate the impact of the uncertainties of the future atmospheric circulation projections on the mitigating or enhancing influence of the summertime circulation changes on temperature and precipitation over Europe. We use an automatic circulation type classification to analyse in detail the atmospheric circulation changes by grouping similar daily SLP (mean sea level pressure) or Z500 (500 hPa geopotential height) fields into homogeneous circulation types. It appears that the choice of the index, on the basis of which the days are grouped together, strongly influences the characteristics of the circulation types and the kinds of circulation changes that can be detected. In comparison with Euclidean distance and pressure gradient-based indices, correlation-based indices, especially the Spearman rank correlation, are the most suitable indices when focusing on the circulation pattern. Over the Arctic region, four periods with circulation anomalies similar to that of 2007-2012 (i.e. a summertime anticyclonic anomaly over the western Arctic region) have been detected over the last 150 years, despite a higher uncertainty of the circulation given by the reanalyses due to the scarcity of observational data before 1940. Nevertheless, the 2007-2012 anomaly appears to be exceptional and several connexions with other variables, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation index and sea ice loss, suggest that it could be part of a major climatic anomaly extending beyond the Arctic region. However, the occurrence of similar periods in the past and the influence of several external and internal forcings do not allow us to attribute it to global warming. The future summertime atmospheric circulation projected by GCMs over Greenland confirms this conclusion. In fact, no significant circulation pattern changes are simulated towards 2100, besides a generalised Z500 increase caused by the projected warming. Since GCMs are able to simulate atmospheric circulation changes over other regions and since the atmospheric circulation itself is influenced by other variables, such as sea ice or snow extent, which are already impacted by long-term changes, we conclude that the 2007-2012 anomaly could rather be attributed to the internal variability of the climatic system. Finally, we evidence that projected future atmospheric circulation changes impact on the SLP and precipitation changes simulated over Europe towards 2100 for summer. Over north-western Europe, these circulation changes could mitigate the SLP decrease by around 50 % and cancel out the precipitation increase. Nevertheless, high uncertainties among the GCMs on the magnitude and even on the sign of these changes cast doubt on the reliability of these projections. On the other hand, future atmospheric circulation changes are not projected to affect significantly the warming and drying simulated for the next decades over the Mediterranean region and eastern Europe.

High resolution present and future climate and surface mass balance of Svalbard modelled by the regional climate model MAR
Lang, Charlotte
2015
This worked aimed to simulate the climate and surface mass balance of Svalbard at high spatial resolution with the regional climate model MAR. First, simulations of the present (1979 - 2013) climate and surface mass balance were performed at a spatial resolution of 10 km. MAR was evaluated over Svalbard by comparing its outputs to measurements of temperature and precipitation measurement and outputs of other modelling products fo the surface mass balance. The results of the MAR simulations were then analysed over 1979 - 2013 and shoed a stability of the (negative) SMB opposed to the recent melt records observed in Greenland. This stability was attributed to a recent change in summer atmospheric circulation damping the Arctic warming over Svalbard. A future projection over 1980 - 2100 was then performed with MAR forced by MIROC5 and the RCP8.5 scenario and showed that the future SMB decrease is projected to be mainly driven by the albedo decrease (related to the expansion of the ablation area) through the increase of the net shortwave radiation absorbed by the surface. Finally, an online downscaling technique has been implemented in MAR to allow the surface modeule SISVAT, computing the surface mass balance and its components, to run at a resolution twice as high as the atmospheric module. This method, based on near-surface temperature and humidity corrections on a subgrid, allows SMB outputs at a resolution twice as high with only 25% more computation time.

Modelling serial offenders’ spatial behaviours: new assumptions for geographic profiling
Trotta, Marie
2014

Yet, the strength and nature ofthe connection between climate and hillslope erosion remain poorly understood at a quantitativelevel. In this study, we present a new numerical model of soil production and transport, whichaims to better represent, at different time scales, the climate control on soil transport. Thenumerical model operates at the scale of a single hill and predicts the rates of soil thicknessand elevation change, by using a simple parametrization of soil production and a multi-processparametrization of soil transport which includes climate-dependent variables (overland flow dischargeand active-layer depth). Simple ground heat transfer and water balance models are usedfor calculating these variables from time-series of precipitation and temperature. The behaviourof the model has been studied through a few simulation examples and sensitivity analysis. Theresults highlight the importance of considering multi-process parameterization of soil transportwhen modelling the response of the hillslope system to climate variations, as these results displaysignificant differences on how each transport process behaves under various climatic conditionsand on how each process affect the evolution of the system. Our numerical model has alsobeen combined with an inversion scheme (Neighbourhood Algorithm) to extract quantitative informationon the evolution of hillslopes in the Ardenne (Belgium, NW Europe) during the LastGlacial-Interglacial Cycle, using a simple climatic scenario and a unique set of topographic andsoil thickness data. Model predictions based on inversion results are consistent with independentobservations on hillslope morphology and cosmogenic nuclide-derived erosion rates, although theinversion results show that soil production and transport rates under both the cold and warmphases of the last climatic cycle cannot be fully constrained by the present-day soil thicknessdistribution. The inversion results suggest that soil transport is by far more efficient duringthe cold climatic phase than during the warm phase, resulting in the succession of weatheringlimited(cold phase) and transport-limited (warm phase) systems. Maximum soil transport ratesare predicted during the transitions between the cold-warm phases. The results also suggestthat a soil thickness dynamic equilibrium has been recently reached on convex regions of thehillslopes, while shallow soils found in convergent areas may be the relics of the soil thicknessdistribution that formed during the cold phase.

DECONSTRUCTING LANDSCAPE IN THE MIND OF PEOPLE: AN EXPLORATION OF EVERYDAY AND WIND ENERGY LANDSCAPES
Vanderheyden, Vincent
2016
In the 19th century, geography was defining itself as the science of landscape, led by German and French schools. Other disciplines were also interested in landscape, each one with its own definition(s). In public policy, landscape has remained, for a long time, a heritage object to be protected (e.g. cultural landscapes of UNESCO). In 2000, the European Landscape Convention, which aims to safeguard the European landscape diversity, proposed a common definition. This includes the idea of areas perceived by people. One of the recommendations of the Convention is the call to focus on other landscapes that only heritage landscapes, such as everyday landscapes and degraded landscapes. The convention also calls for better management and planning practices towards landscape changes. Today, landscape is often invoked as arbitrator in territorial disputes. This is the case in discussions for the installation of wind farms. Newcomers and farmers ‘visions on landscape are often opposed: idyllic landscape for living and recreation for the firsts, working environment for the seconds. Despite the European Landscape Convention, many grey areas remain about how to achieve its goals. Long before it, leading researchers called for a better interest in everyday landscapes. Yet they remain the poor relation in landscape research, to the benefit of natural, wild landscapes. Many uncertainties also remain on how non-specialists perceive their ordinary landscapes and how they have appropriated the landscape concept. The research helps to fill this double gap, deconstructing the concept through the lens of ordinary landscape. With several research questions, I plan to explore what is the landscape in people’s mind, how they conceptualize it, how they think it and how they question their own views on landscape. I will show how these conceptualizations and thoughts are shaped by the living environment, which often provides the tools necessary to the apprehension of the landscape. I will analyse how new elements such as wind farm can disrupt these patterns. The first part of the research is dedicated to the overall perception of their ordinary landscapes by Belgians, especially facing the issue of wind energy. Using a photo-questionnaire survey, we surveyed a representative sample of the Belgian population (n = 1542). Based on this investigation a model was developed. It highlights the positive influence of forest cover and the lack of anthropogenic elements, but also the negative influence of its urbanization and too flat relief on landscape attractiveness. The influence of wind turbines has to be qualified according to the landscape in which they are implanted. In landscapes strongly marked by the human footprint, they seem perceived as increasing the landscape attractiveness. In unspoilt landscapes, they seem rather to contribute to their degradation. These global findings are nuanced in further research. Deeper analysis shows that Flemish people have a more positive view of the landscape than Walloons. I hypothesize a decisive influence of the local context. Indeed, Flemish landscapes are generally more urbanized and marked by man than most of the Walloon landscapes. The building of wind farms seems to change or even reverse the situation. The analysis also shows significant influences related to educational level and gender. Anthropogenic landscapes are less disregarded by low educated people. Women seem to attach importance to stewardship and landscape maintenance. In contrast, although suspected, age influence has not been formally demonstrated. The second part of this dissertation, the cornerstone of this doctoral research, aims at deconstructing the landscape concept in the mind of people. In this part, wind farms are no longer considered as a case study, but as a leitmotif. I deeper surveyed smaller groups (n = 54) in three areas of Wallonia (Walloon Picardy, between the Sambre and Meuse rivers, and Ardennes) with qualitative techniques. This survey was conducted five years after the first. The analysis of the vocabulary used by the regional sub-groups shows that people are not equipped the same way for analysing landscapes. The experience of living environment seems to be crucial in providing analytical keys. Thus Ardennes people seem better equipped to talk about the forest, marking their landscapes, while the Picards seem more loquacious about their iconic cultivated landscapes. The research also highlighted different landscape analysis patterns. Some people ordered landscapes according to their degree of naturalness, the less spoiled landscapes being the most attractive. On the contrary, fewer attach importance to landscapes where human footprint is clearly visible. Some respondents remain in a purely aesthetic landscape analysis, while others project themselves into the landscape, imagining they are performing different actions. Depending on their interests, these actions influence the perception of one same landscape. Research shows that this overall pattern analysis is disturbed by various factors. The recognition of certain places transformed landscape analysis in an analysis of the place, with the emotional changes that this entails. The position of the participants facing wind energy projects also appears sharper. In the time between the two parts of the research, Wallonia has experienced unprecedented wind development; opinions have therefore had time to form. This was not yet totally the case during the first survey. Beyond these major disruptions, the research also shows clear influences of the ordered character of landscapes, their living character and variety of land uses. The research also highlights the influence of non-visual criteria such as noise or odours detectable in the landscape. In conclusion, the research shows that respondents often show a sense of landscape, weaker than sense of place and stronger than aesthetic.

Characterization of ionospheric irregularities and their influence on high-accuracy positioning with GPS over mid-latitudes
Wautelet, Gilles
2013
Over the last decade came major breakthroughs in satellite navigation and positioning, due to the development of precise positioning techniques based on Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. Modern processing methods, such as the Real-Time Kinematics (RTK), allow the GPS user to determine its position in real-time with an accuracy of a few centimeters. The success of these algorithms relies on the cancellation and/or the mitigation of the various errors affecting signal propagation. Among these errors is the delay due to the ionospheric refraction. More particularly, the presence of irregularities in the ionospheric plasma is responsible for positioning errors reaching several (deci)meters. As a result, there is a growing demand from GPS user communities (such as land surveyors or civil engineers) to be informed, if possible in advance, of the occurrence of irregularities that might impact on their positioning solution. Based on a ten years GPS dataset collected over Belgium, this thesis aims at assessing, understanding and modeling the occurrence of ionospheric irregularities as well as estimating their effects in terms of positioning accuracy. Firstly, we carry out a climatological study of irregularities to identify and characterize the most recurrent features. We can distinguish two main irregularity types: those due to space weather events (such as Coronal Mass Ejections – CMEs – or solar flares) and the others, constituting the bulk of irregularities observed at a single station and referred to as “quiet-time” irregularities, as they occur during quiet geomagnetic conditions. These latter are then divided into two groups: the first is made up of Medium-Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (MSTIDs) which occur during autumn/winter daytime. In the second group are the summer nighttime irregularities, which are rapid fluctuations of the Total Electron Content (TEC) probably associated with spread-F phenomenon. Next, we develop a model of quiet-time irregularity occurrence, based on a statistical analysis of the aforementioned dataset. Computations rely on several mathematical modeling tools, such as the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the Generalized Least-Squares (GLS) algorithm and the AutoRegressive and Moving Average (ARMA) method. The resulting climatological model is made up of two components reproducing daily profile as well as secular variations of the ionospheric variability for a typical GPS station in Belgium. The last part of this work deals with the impact of irregularities on relative positioning. This technique allows the measurement of the vector (called baseline) joining the receiver (user station) to a reference station whose position is accurately known. More precisely, we assess the effect of baseline length and orientation during the occurrence of MSTIDs and geomagnetic storms through the processing of the Belgian Dense Network, made up of 66 dual-frequency GPS stations. Finally, the relationship between positioning error and the presence of ionospheric irregularities detected at a single station is investigated, filling the gap between the scientific and the GPS-user communities.

Evaluation of Electronic Nose Technology for Early-warning of Bio-methanation Process Disturbance
Adam, Gilles
2013
An electronic nose (e-nose) is an instrument composed of an array of non specific gas sensors inspired by the biological olfactory system for the detection and recognition of odours. In this work, this technology is evaluated to predict process disorders in agricultural anaerobic digestion reactors. Response of the sensor array is used to recognize a gas mixture by the use of multivariate data analysis techniques. In our case, an e-nose developed in our laboratory and composed of metal oxide semi-conductor gas sensors was equipped with a biogas dilution system to realize the measurements. When employed on small-scale digesters fed with simple feeding substrates (sucrose, lipids, mixture lipids and sucrose), the e-nose presented enthusiastic results for the detection of organic overload disorders. Multivariate process control charts were employed with the e-nose data to obtain a simple state indicator represented by the Hotelling's T² statistics. This indicator resumes the general state of the digesters when its value exceeds statistically defined control limit. Instability periods and recovery of the anaerobic digestion process when exposed to organic overfeeding could be thus precisely assessed. In addition, the use of a variety of substrates had no significant effect on the performance of the e-nose monitoring. Variations of methane content in biogas, as a result of use of substrates of different compositions, had neither any influence on the e-nose monitoring quality. Thereafter, an e-nose was placed online on continuously stirred tank reactor of 100 L over a period of 300 days. A multivariate monitoring method using recursive and adaptive principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the e-nose data. This enabled to very efficiently compensate system drift and notably sensor drift. Moreover, adaptive PCA model could also adapt to environmental variations and to reactor slow shifts. T² statistics and its squared prediction error (SPE) obtained from the PCA model are very competitive state indicators compared to pH, alkalinity, gas production rate and methane and carbon dioxide content. Two electronic noses were also evaluated in real-scale agricultural anaerobic digestion plants. The low process state monitoring in both plants does not enable to conclude to the relevance of disorders observed by the e-nose apparatus and demonstrates the real need for online anaerobic digestion process state monitoring and its subsequent optimization in agricultural biogas plants. Even though, the performance of the recursive PCA monitoring is much superior to that of static PCA. Adaptive PCA proves to be a potential automatic drift and environmental variations correction method for online and real-time e-nose measures, notably for field applications. In conclusion, it was demonstrated in this work that e-nose technology has a real potential as an application of online monitoring of anaerobic digester state. Moreover, this research demonstrated that it was possible to realize a monitoring of the state of anaerobic digesters using only gas phase measurements. Another contribution is the use of multivariate process control techniques on e-nose data to obtain a simple state indicator as well as the use of adaptive PCA to automatically compensate drift and environmental effects on e-nose measurements.

Analysis of solar air-conditioning systems and their integration in buildings
Thomas, Sébastien
2013
Due to economical and environmental concerns, the energy e fficiency of buildings nowadays has proven to play an increasingly important role. To satisfy the occupants comfort, the cooling of buildings generally involves a considerable consumption of electricity. Solar radiation, which is a free and renewable resource, is linked to the cooling needs of buildings. This work consists in the evaluation, from an energy-saving and economical point of view, of a potential use of solar energy for air-conditioning in residential and o ffice buildings. It includes an integral approach of solar air-conditioning, involving the analysis of the buildings cooling needs, the cold production devices, the solar collector fields and climates. This analysis is supported by simulations and experimental setups. The study of solar air-conditioning systems already available on the market or in laboratories reveals their operational principles as well as their main performance indicators. Two main solar cooling paths are investigated: a thermal and a photovoltaic conversion of solar energy. Besides this, the performance of the entire air-conditioning system broadens the question of the energy performance to the interactions between the diff erent parts of the system. The building thermal loads (heating, cooling, domestic hot water) of some theoretical residential and o ffice buildings are computed in a part of this work dealing with the influence of the comfort model, the building energy performance level and the climate. What comes across through this analysis is that, the location of the buildings put aside, the cooling load is greatly influenced by the envelope thermal performance and the internal gains. The cooling systems involving absorption or adsorption or vapour compression chiller cooling machines are simulated for the previously defi ned building cases. The use of solar energy through thermal collectors for heating meets higher primary energy savings than for cooling. In all cases, the thermally driven system achieves a lower energy and economical performance than a vapour compression chiller partially supplied with a photovoltaic field. Some real scale testing of solar air-conditioning systems was carried out in Arlon (Belgium). A thermally driven adsorption chiller and a vapour compression chiller with a photovoltaic grid-connected fi eld were operated during the cooling season. The measurements made during this experiment and their analysis manage to discover every thermal and electrical energy flows of the systems leading to a new adsorption chiller model. Concerning the comparison with the simulations, the main point of interest is the consumption of electricity dedicated to thermally driven systems, which is two times higher in real scale conditions. The results obtained from the monitoring campaigns corroborate the simulation results about system comparison.
