BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that bone and muscle wasting are closely interconnected. OBJECTIVE: The aim was of this study is to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis in a population of women diagnosed with sarcopenia. Participants, setting and design: We analyzed cross-sectional data of women, aged 65 years and above, for whom bone mineral density was available at the time of inclusion in the SarcoPhAge (Sarcopenia and Physical impairment with advancing Age) cohort, an ongoing prospective study with the aim to assess consequences of sarcopenia. MEASUREMENTS: Muscle strength was evaluated with a hydraulic hand-dynamometer, appendicular lean mass and bone mineral density by Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry and physical performance by the Short Physical Performance Battery test (SPPB). Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People definition, i.e. a low muscle mass plus either low muscle strength or low physical performance. A bone mineral density T-score equal to or below -2.5SD at the lumbar spine, at the total hip or at the femoral neck was used to define osteoporosis (World Health Organization definition). RESULTS: A total of 126 women aged 74.38+/-6.32 years were included. Among them, 26 were assessed with sarcopenia (20.6%) and 34 (27.0%) with osteoporosis. There were more osteoporotic women among sarcopenic subjects (46.1%) than among non-sarcopenic subjects (22.0%) (p-value=0.011). A significant lower appendicular lean mass index was observed in osteoporotic women (p-value=0.025). We also observed, in osteoporotic subjects, a lower muscle strength (p-value=0.023). Numerical values of bone mineral density were lower in the sarcopenic population but the differences did not reach the level of statistical significance. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that muscle mass and strength are lower in patients with osteoporosis. Prospective changes in bone and muscle mass will be investigated during the follow-up of our cohort. [less ▲]

Fine aggregate is one of the essential components in concrete and significantly influences the material properties. As parts of natures, physical characteristics of fine aggregate are highly relevant to its behaviors in concrete. The most of previous studies are mainly focused on the physical properties of coarse aggregate due to the equipment limitations. In this paper, two typical fine aggregates, i.e. river sand and crushed rock, are selected for shape characterization. The new developed digital image analysis systems are employed as the main approaches for the purpose. Some other technical methods, e.g. sieve test, laser diffraction method are also used for the comparable references. Shape characteristics of fine aggregates with different origins but in similar size ranges are revealed by this study. Compared with coarse aggregate, fine grains of different origins generally have similar shape differences. These differences are more significant in surface texture properties, which can be easily identified by an advanced shape parameter: bluntness. The new image analysis method is then approved to be efficient for the shape characterization of fine aggregate in concrete [less ▲]

Insects are rich in proteins and could be an alternative source of proteins to feed animals. Numerous companies started the production of insects at small or larger scale as feed for chicken and fish. Most of the business models for feed production are based on the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) or the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). In Europe, these novel feed are not yet authorized and products are commercialized outside Europe or eventually used as pet food (e.g. wild birds). For further authorization in Europe, many questions must be clarified concerning the presence of antinutritional compounds, the risk associated to pathogens, to residues (pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metals) and to allergens. To authorize such products on the market, methods to detect if a product really contains insects and to authenticate insect products are also mandatory. European Commission Regulation No 51/2013 named the Polymerase Chain Reaction as a reference method to determine the constituents of animal origin in feed. Targets focused on insects (target common to all insects) and targets specific to particular insect species are required. PCR methods are developed at CRA-W in this way. Among the methods developed, three of them already gave interesting results. The first one (81 bp) is specific to all insects excepting individuals from the Diptera order. The two others (94 bp and 114 bp) are specific to Tenebrio molitor. The specificity of the targets was tested against 45 insect species and on 10 commercial insect-based feed products (real-processed feed material samples). The sensitivity of the method was assessed through the AFNOR XP V03-020-2 standard approach using the LOD6 method. The three methods reached the recommended performance criteria (LOD≤ 20 copies). In 2010, a hot debate on bean seed quality in the framework of a European Research project led a French-speaking association of artisan seed companies to challenge EU "quarantine" measures on the bacterial agents of Common Bacterial Blight (CBB), a seedborne disease of common bean. The artisan seed companies (artisans semenciers) forming the association Croqueurs de Carottes are small enterprises producing and marketing seed of open-pollinated vegetable varieties from the public domain, based on networks of organic seed growing farmers. In doing so, the artisan seed companies contribute to the dynamic conservation of crop diversity and to making this diversity accessible to home and market gardeners. For the Croqueurs as member of the French Réseau Semences Paysannes (peasant seed network), this commercial activity also forms part of a wider movement of seed re-appropriation. The research presented here departs from the hypothesis that the dispute on the CBB "quarantine" measures reveals a more general discrepancy: The rationale behind the plant health management practices of the seed artisans differs from the rationale behind the quarantine measures which they face in the form of phytosanitary inspections. In the aim of specifying the plant health management practices of the artisan seed companies, these practices and the rationale behind it will be unfolded as an actor-network. In terms of actor network theory (ANT), the contestation of quarantine measures on common bean by the Croqueurs in France reveals the actor-network behind their bean health management. Disturbed by the quarantine measures, the network becomes apparent in a process of reassemblage. The network behind this particular plant health management will be unfolded by taking controversial elements of the implementation of quarantine measures as a starting point, such as the official protocol for the detection of bacterial pathogens on seeds and the competences of inspectors in charge of phytosanitary seed inspections. The description of the plant health management by artisanal seed companies will be based on the practices of the Croqueurs in France and Belgium, but also on the practices of two artisanal seed companies in Germany. By contrast, discrepancies with the dominant plant health management rationale will appear. Whereas the "quarantine" measures aim at eradicating CBB in the EU by admitting only CBB-free bean seed on the seed market, the artisan seed companies rather seek to live with plant diseases and integrate plant pathogens in their production systems. For the latter, managing crop and seed health also goes through managing sound environments. In the framework of evolving EU plant regulations and a reorganisation of phytosanitary seed inspections in France, the debates on plant health management in artisanal seed companies persist. Although much has been written and publically debated by non-profit organizations, small-scale seed companies and researchers concerning EU seed legislations, but the role of phytosanitary regulations in the dynamic conservation of crop biodiversity has received little attention. The research presented here represents a first step in addressing this question in the scientific arena. [less ▲]

This paper introduces a simple method to monitor power system voltage stability conditions in real-time. The method is based on the concept of Voltage Instability Predictor (VIP). The essence of the method is a simple computation of a voltage stability boundary based on VIP derived quantities. The stability boundary is assumed as a parabolic equation in the P-Q plane identified using measurements collected at a specific substation, transmission path, or load center. The computed stability boundary is further visualized in a P-Q plane, together with a point representing the current operating conditions, and generally re-computed as soon as the new set of measurements is collected (preferably at high rates using phasor measurement units). Simplicity and easy interpretation of the results brings this method as a useful tool to increase system operator situational awareness. Supporting results are provided using relatively big test system (52 bus Nordic test system) and a real-life system (a portion of the North-West USA system). [less ▲]
