The aim of this study is the experimental characterization of the behaviour of a mortar during convective drying. We focalise on mortar that has a rate water-cement of 0.5. The drying tests are developed in a micro-convective dryer that can use samples weighing from 0 to 8g. The advantage of these experiments is to reproduce the natural conditions that can be found during the treatment of the mortar-atmosphere problems. The response of the drying curve or the drying kinetic depends on the applied drying conditions. So, the temperature of the air varies from 60°C to 130°C, the velocity of the air is changed from 2 m.s-1 to 5 m. s-1and the relative humidity is kept less than 1.7%. The comparison between the experimental results and the proposed analytical solutions of the equation of diffusion represented by Fick’s law, applied for a finite shape, allows determination of the values of the diffusion coefficient. It has a value of 1.71×10-10 m2.s-1 at 60°C, 13.69×10-10 m2.s-1 at 90°C and 16.27×10-10 m2.s-1 at 130°C. Calculation of the activation energy and the D0 constant are also possible. [less ▲]

Endosulfan is an organochlorine pesticide that was recently labeled as a persistent organic pollutant, but it is still widely employed, particularly in developing countries. The goal of this study is to evaluate the acute (LC50) and chronic effects (developmental and behavioural traits) of this insecticide on Rana dalmatina tadpoles after exposure to ecologically relevant concentrations (0.005, 0.01, and 0.05 mg/L) by applying video-tracking techniques to evaluate the quantitative effect of endosulfan on amphibian behavioural patterns. The 96 h LC50 value was 0.074 mg endosulfan/L. Tadpoles chronically exposed to 0.01 and 0.05 mg endosulfan/L underwent high mortality rate, decreased larval growth, delayed development, and increased incidence of malformations, and they did not reach metamorphosis by the end of the experiment. Moreover, tadpoles exposed to these concentrations exhibited several abnormalities in swimming patterns, such as shorter distance moved, swirling, resting, and unusual use of space. The exposure to 0.005 mg endosulfan/L did not cause any significant effects on behaviour, larval growth, or development, but we observed a significant decrease in both survival and time to metamorphosis. We showed that developmental abnormalities are dose-dependent and that the pesticide effects could differ depending on the endosulfan concentration and the species tested. We also validated the hypothesis that behavioural analysis, along with the use of new analytical methods, could be a useful tool in amphibian ecotoxicological studies. [less ▲]

Substrate limitation responsive biosensors have been used for the development of a mini-bioreactor platform that can be used as a scale-down tool. Three green fluorescent protein (GFP) transcriptional reporters have been chosen in Escherichia coli, i.e., uspA::gfp, csiE::gfp and yciG::gfp. Our previous studies have shown that these kinds of promoters are induced in response to substrate limitation and are significantly repressed when cultures are carried out in heterogeneous bioreactors. This sensitivity to substrate limitation has been confirmed in the case of the csiE and yciG biosensors. A mini-scale-down platform is proposed as a high throughput tool to rapidly investigate the usefulness of a given microbial biosensor. This platform is composed of shake flasks able to operate in fed-batch mode either using the slow release or the intermittent feeding principle. Local heterogeneities were reproduced at the level of these mini-bioreactors (operating under the intermittent feeding principle) and caused a decrease in GFP expression as in conventional scale-down reactors. The presence of GFP in supernatants was also noted and seems to be correlated with the substrate limitation signal for the three cultivation systems considered in this work (i.e., chemostat, conventional and mini-bioreactors) and with membrane permeability. [less ▲]

Allyl sulfides, the main constituents of garlic oil, have been studied in the past decades for their effects against cancer. Since cancers are not all healed, ways to prevent it, especially with natural products that could be included in food preparation, are more than welcome. The synthesis and separation of allyl sulfides can provide larger amount of allyl sulfide than the extraction in order to make biological tests. Furthermore, the improvement of the synthesis conditions helps the understanding of the formation of allyl sulfide while garlic is processed. Finally, the study of the products allows a deeper understanding of the conversion between the allyl sulfides. A parallel can then be done with the conservation conditions of garlic-based products. The first part of this work describes the synthesis optimization using the design of experiment. The reaction of allyl bromide and sodium disulfide was carried under different conditions: the reaction duration, the heating (in microwave oven or in oil bath, at different temperature), the presence of catalyst, and the agitation were assessed. In the second part of the study, extractions are performed on garlic. The composition of the extracts is followed during time under the conditions established in the first part. The results give an optimized way to synthesize allyl sulfides, as much as an idea of the reactions happening on them in garlic preparations under various conditions. [less ▲]

Recent events such as natural catastrophes (tsunami, hurricane, …) or terrorism attacks have highlighted the necessity of ensuring the structural integrity of buildings under exceptional events with the objective to save the life of the occupants and of the safety services (fireman, ambulance man, …) and also to avoid collateral damages to the adjoining buildings. The partial collapse of the Ronan Point Tower in 1968 in UK is considered as the starting point of the interest in the structural integrity of buildings but more recent catastrophes in the last decade such as the terrorist attack of the World Trade Center towers in 2001 or the earthquake/tsunami in Fukushima in 2011 have increased the interest of the engineering community and also of the population in this topic. According to different national and international design codes, the structural integrity of civil engineering structures should be ensured through appropriate measures but, in most of the cases, no precise practical guidelines on how to achieve this goal are provided. In the present report, some definitions are first given. Existing codes and standards are then reviewed and main conclusions are drawn on their adequacy to the present needs of practitioners. From this analysis, general and specific research needs within CIDECT are identified. These ones are detailed in two dedicated sections respectively on buildings and trusses. A summary table draws the main conclusions in terms of future required CIDECT investments. Finally some references to literature are listed. [less ▲]
