This paper introduces an application of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to model metal forming processes. The X-FEM is used to account for material interfaces and reduce the meshing constraints due to the shape of the tools and the evolving configuration of the structures. Large deformations and non-linear behaviors are also accounted for, but this contribution focuses in the modeling of frictional conditions on the interface. In X-FEM simulations, the constraint of impenetrability is usually imposed using Lagrange multiplier methods. For such strategies, stabilisation algorithms are needed to prevent the apparition of instabilities due to the introduction of dual unknowns. The strategy presented here proposes to manage the contact using the penalty approach. As it requires no additional variables, it is not submitted to the same kind of instabilities. The contact problem is modeled using integration sub-elements, defined on the boundary of the structure, on which the contact constraints have to be enforced. [less ▲]

Retention and refreezing of meltwater are acknowledged to be important processes for the mass budget of polar glaciers and ice sheets. Several parameterizations of these processes exist for use in energy and mass balance models. Due to a lack of direct observations, validation of these parameterizations is difficult. In this study we compare a set of 6 refreezing parameterizations against output of two Regional Climate Models (RCMs) coupled to an energy balance snow model, the Regional Atmospheric Climate Model (RACMO2) and the Modèle Atmosphérique Régional (MAR), applied to the Greenland ice sheet. In both RCMs, refreezing is explicitly calculated in a snow model that calculates vertical profiles of temperature, density and liquid water content. Between RACMO2 and MAR, the ice sheet-integrated amount of refreezing differs by only 4.9 mm w.e yr−1 (4.5 %), and the temporal and spatial variability are very similar. For consistency, the parameterizations are forced with output (surface temperature, precipitation and melt) of the RCMs. For the ice sheet-integrated amount of refreezing and its inter-annual variations, all parameterizations give similar results, especially after some tuning. However, the spatial distributions differ significantly and the spatial correspondence between the RCMs is better than with any of the parameterizations. Results are especially sensitive to the choice of the depth of the thermally active layer, which determines the cold content of the snow in most parameterizations. These results are independent of which RCM is used to force the parameterizations. [less ▲]

Traces of students’ reasoning about some of their writing choices have been noticed in the context of a process related to the acquisition and improvement of spelling. The process suggested, i.e. the “Ateliers de Négociation Graphique” (Graphic Negociation Workshops), is the traditional activity of dictation, coupled with a reflective dimension: students verbalize and compare their way of applying rules and progressively develop a questioning and revising attitude towards their writings. These workshops are the best place to understand the students’ reasoning and their way of applying rules and using strategies, productively or otherwise, that systematic drills do not always help to emphasize. Observing grade-5-and-6 students during several months drew our attention to a recurrent problem, which is the wrong use of some usual substitution strategies aimed at making a choice between two spellings. In a sentence such as “les hommes se sont toujours intéressés à la mécanique” (men have always been interested in mechanics), some students who waver between various endings for the past participle will use “fait ou faire” (made or make) instead of “intéressés”. This is a common process, but one that is rather difficult for students to apply for several reasons, such as acceptability issues of the sentence at the semantic level (Haas, 1999). The collected video data lead to consideration of the relevance of using such processes before the students have the skill and expertise in the various grammatical categories. [less ▲]

The term « Pet bird » designates birds housed and breeded for an exclusively ornamental use. This category includes mainly Passeriformes (canaries, finches…) and Psittaciformes (parrots, parakeets…), and is a not-so-well known vet’s clientship fraction. Many families indeed own their « kitchen canary », which represent a lucrative business for pet shops or local breeders (e.a. via birds fairs and markets). Besides, some birds are bred for their very high value; for example, in the case of canaries, male and female reproductors with recognized genetic potential are presented in international contests for their posture (the Bossu Belge : fig 1a), their colour (red mosaic: fig 1b) and for their song (Harzer: fig 1c) and sold for rising prices. Finally, exotic birds like parrots (ara, cockatoo…), legally or illegaly traded from Asia, are however very popular pets and profusely represented in zoos and parks. Notwithstanding these economic facts, these animals are potential carriers and/or transmitters of zoonotic diseases. Some of them could have an important impact on human health, like ornithosis, salmonellosis or even H5N1 high pathogenic avian influenza. This review, although non exhausive, has as aim to enlighten, by the description of several cases of birds-humans transmission the risks encountered by birds owners, including children, and on another point of view to assess the potential economic consequences. In this small form of clear text, we propose an argument that could allow our view to develop scientific research less mutilating and more fruitful in the vast area of the animal care. Having highlighted and commented on the most prominent of the various oral and written presentations that are likely to contribute to this change, we discuss the merits of the use of anthropology and constructivist ethology in their situated perspective. What we propose involves three major changes from the previously dominant research traditions: a true recognition of the animal as a subject, the return of their voice to practitioners and the development of attentive and creative methods of observation and investigation. We report on the first extraction of interference fragmentation functions from the semi-inclusive production of two hadron pairs in back-to-back jets in e+e- annihilation. A nonzero asymmetry in the correlation of azimuthal orientations of opposite π+π- pairs is related to the transverse polarization of fragmenting quarks through a significant polarized dihadron fragmentation function. Extraction of the latter requires the knowledge of its unpolarized counterpart, the probability density for a quark to fragment in a π +π - pair. Since data for the unpolarized cross section are missing, we extract the unpolarized dihadron fragmentation function from a Monte Carlo simulation of the cross section. © 2012 American Physical Society. Several findings showed that semantic information is more likely to be retrieved from recognised faces than from recognised voices. Earlier experiments, which investigated the recall of biographical information following person recognition, used stimuli that were pre-experimentally familiar to the participants, such as famous people’s voices and faces. We propose an alternative method to compare the participants’ ability to associate semantic information with faces and voices. The present experiments allowed a very strict control of frequency of exposure to pre-experimentally unfamiliar faces and voices and ensured the absence of identity clues in the spoken extracts. In Experiment 1 semantic information was retrieved from the presentation of a name. In Experiment 2 semantic and lexical information was retrieved from faces and/or voices. A memory advantage for faces over voices was again observed. [less ▲]

Introduction. – The influence of Parental Educational Status (PES) on cognitive performance has been confirmed in several studies. Objective. – The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between PES and several domains of cognitive functioning and examine, through mediation analyses, the relationship between PES, language, and cognitive tasks. Method. – We first administered tasks measuring memory, executive and attentional abilities to 64 European native French speakers, divided into two groups of children according to parents’ educational status. Results. – The results suggest that, on most tasks, the effect of socio-educational status is mediated by language abilities. However, because the results were less clear for executive functions, we carried out a second experiment in which we administered more specific executive measures (i.e. inhibition, cognitive flexibility, updating and reasoning) to 80 children. Conclusion. – The results confirmed the influence of the parents’ educational status on the executive functioning and also that, contrary to other cognitive functions, this influence on executive tasks is not completely explained by language differences.
