[more ▼] In Realismo mágico y primitivismo (1998), Erik Camayd-Freixas analyses the solutions proposed by Rulfo for the problems of the primitivism which were revealed in El reino de este mundo and Hombres de maíz. In this contribution, I argue that Campobello had already pointed at some of these solutions in Cartucho. To this end, I show how she avoids some of the problems linked to primitivism in juxtaposing the resources of Cartucho to those of Pedro Páramo. Next I elaborate on the specific characteristics of primitivism in Cartucho : the ontological fluidity, the collectivism and the logic of the concrete. Finally, I discuss whether it is legitimate to propose a playful and alegorical reading of Cartucho, two interpretations suggested by its primitivist nature. [more ▼] Purpose: The aim of this study is to find the suitable cutoff point of endometrial thickness (ET) for predicting abnormal endometrium in Vietnamese women with postmenopausal bleeding (PMB). Material & Methods: A prospective study was carried out during 2 years. 308 women, who did not use any hormone therapy, were suffered from PMB. All of them were measured ET by transvaginal sonography before an endometrial biopsy. Dilation and curettage (D&C) was indicated in women with ET ≥ 3 mm to diagnose an abnormal endometrium (hyperplasia atypia or cancer). We compared the sensitivity and false-negative rate at each 1-mm interval cutoff point of ET for detecting these histopathologies. Results: 292 women gave their consent to perform an endometrial biopsy (D&C). Their mean age was 59.4 ± 9.3 years. The median time of amenorrhea was 5 years (range 2-13 years); 12.67% (95%CI 9.10-17.04) of cases were diagnosed an abnormal ET in which the mean of endometrial thickness found was 4.0±1.7 mm (95% CI 3.8-11.8). In comparison to seven cutoff points, the ET at 4 mm showed the highest detection rate of abnormal endometrium in women with PMB (95% of sensitivity for 4% false-negative rate) Conclusion: The ET at 4 mm is the most suitable cutoff point for predicting an abnormal endometrium in Vietnamese women with PMB. [more ▼] Agri-food by-products rich in dietary fibres may be used as feeds and health foods. Owing to its high fibre content, date flesh could be useful in human nutrition. It is interesting to study the influence of oven-drying temperatures of date fibre concentrates (DFC) on their physicochemical and functional properties for possible use as a potential fibre source in the enrichment of food. DFC from 11 Tunisian date cultivars were dried at different temperatures (40, 50 and 60 °C) and analysed regarding proximate composition (moisture, ash, protein and lipids), physicochemical (water activity (aw), pH) and functional properties (water holding capacity (WHC), swelling capacity (SC), oil holding capacity (OHC) and emulsifying capacity (EC)). DFC dried at different temperatures showed interesting functional characteristics such as hydration properties, high OHC (2.73–4.60 g oil/g dry fibre) and EC (5.93–12.87%) values. Although drying temperatures promoted little modifications affecting the physicochemical properties of DFC, significant decreases in WHC, SC and EC of DFC were noticed at the highest temperature (60 °C) for most of the date varieties. The observed influence of drying temperature on functional DFC properties calls for the use of low temperature in order to obtain DFC as suitable food ingredient. [more ▼] The present work was carried out in the frame of a Belgian Science Policy project (PONDSCAPE -“Towards a sustainable management of pond diversity at the landscape level”). During the summer 2008, 7103 lymnaeids snails were collected from 125 ponds distributed in 5 clusters of 25 ponds each. Each cluster was located in a different geological region of Belgium. These snails belonged to the following species or genus: 2474 Galba truncatula (the main intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica in Belgium) and 4629 Radix sp. Moreover, several biological (presence of trampling and dungs, snail size …) and non biological factors (pH, depth, fences …) were also registered from the different biotopes. DNA was extracted based on Chelex® technique. Then the snail DNAs were screened through a multiplex PCR that amplifies the lymnaeid internal transcribed spacer 2 sequence (500-600 bp) (acting as an internal control) and a 124 bp Fasciola sp. sequence. Lymnaeid snails were found in 93 biotopes (66%). Thirty Galba truncatula (1.31%) and 7 Radix sp. (0.16%) were found positive for Fasciola sp. A classification and regression tree (CART) analysis was performed in an attempt to better understand the relative importance and relationships among the different recorded factors. For example, the geographic localization is one of the best explanatory variables for the abundance of the different snail species and the presence/absence of faecal material is the best explanatory variable for the presence of specific F. hepatica DNA material in the different screened snails.
