This paper proposes a novel tracking state estimator to process both fast-rate synchronized phasor and slow rate SCADA measurements. The former are assumed to be in limited number. The latter are exploited as and when they arrive to the control center. In order to restore observability, after each execution of the tracking state estimator, forecasted SCADA measurements are used as pseudo-measurements in the next estimation. An event detection analysis allows assessing if the system is in quasi steady-state. If so, an innovation analysis is performed to identify and eliminate erroneous SCADA measurements. The system state is computed by Hachtel’s augmented matrix method. The option of exploiting time-tagged SCADA measurements is also considered. The method is illustrated through detailed dynamic simulations of a test system evolving towards voltage collapse, with and without emergency control. [less ▲]

In this case study, we study the generation of warning waves with prescribed characteristics in a mountain stream. We determine which dam release will generate the desired warning wave. We solve this inverse problem following a two-model approach. An analytical kinematic model is used for a preliminary design of the dam release and a detailed two-dimensional (2D) fully dynamic model is used to converge to the final solution. Although the presented case study is far from an idealized academic case, the analytical model performs well and, beyond its role for preliminary design, turns out to be of prime interest for both understanding and discussing the results of the detailed 2D model. The complex interactions between the release hydrograph, the geometry of the river and the friction formula are brought to light by the analytical model, which highlights the complementarity of both models and the usefulness of such a two-model approach. Edible insects are systematically targeted as a major future food for European consumers but success in introducing entomophagy in Western society depends on factors governing consumers’ attitudes towards insect-based products. Effectively, as for sushi in the 2000s, edible insects are considered as new food products in Europe and are deeply related to a fear or a reject feeling by consumers called “food neophobia“. Consequently, several studies have been achieved to face the actual aversion of European consumers for insects. These studies principally tried to understand the insect-related neophobia, to highlight positive arguments for entomophagy development and also to test possible ways of integration of insects as food. The purpose of this chapter is to get an overview of the actual literature on edible insect acceptability in Europe to propose conceivable solutions for product development and new approaches for further studies. Adaptive facades are performance based envelopes that are able to respond dynamically to climatic conditions. One of the recognized adaptive façade technologies is electrochromic glazing. However, very few studies evaluated the performance of electrochromic glazing on the building level. Therefore, we selected a case study of a certified educational building with a nearly zero energy building performance that includes an electrochromic facade. The overall aim of the research is to understand the performance requirements of electrochromic glazing and its overall contribution to energy saving s and thermal and visual comfort improvement. The performance of the Swiss International School in Dubai was analyzed based on interviews with the design and build team, monitored data and post occupancy evaluation. A systematic process mapping took place to review the performance indicators, simulation tools and team responsibilities during the design, construction and operation stages of the building. The paper identifies the key performance criteria of electrochromic glazing in relation to energy and comfort. Finally, we assess the significance of using electrochromic glazing from a technical point of view and share the learned lessons for architects and facade engineers [less ▲]

Adaptive facades can ensure step-change progresses in the energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy while improving the comfort of the occupants. Therefore, the purpose of this structured interview is to assess advantages, disadvantages and future expectations considering the adaptive facades. This work is a part of actions of The COST Action TU1403 Adaptive Façade Network. The objective of this report is to gain an understanding of how experts currently define adaptive façade systems, which simulation tools they use, the major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and treats of adaptive façade systems, key performance indicators they use and their vision for the future of adaptive facades. With this information gathered, it is anticipated that adaptive façade professionals will carry on assessment of adaptive facades. A qualitative study design was employed, using semi-structured interviews. Interviewees working in academia and practice were selected. The interviewees represented the range of possible adaptive facade professionals, from researchers and designers considered optimization in the assessment of adaptive facades. Also, every interviewed expert was asked to approve their responses and add any additional comment to their answers. [less ▲]

According to Jennifer A. Peeples, the “toxic sublime” refers to “the tensions that arise from recognizing the toxicity of a place, object or situation, while simultaneously appreciating its mystery, magnificence and ability to inspire awe”. As an alternative to the “technological sublime”, which creates awe through the contemplation of human efforts to master the environment, it urges us to consider the negative and noxious aspects of such endeavours. Through her analysis of Edward Burtynsky’s “Manufactured Landscapes”, Peeples introduces a new form of sublime aesthetics, which may also be used as a valuable trope in the study of the relationship between literature and our physical environment. My goal in this study is to extend such considerations to the recent history of American literature, using examples such as Rachel Carson’s “A Fable for Tomorrow” (1962), which describes the invisible “lethal film” made of “systemic insecticides” that converts natural species into carcinogenic poison, thus depicting landscapes as intoxicated “places of beauty” that no longer symbolise human abilities to dominate the environment but rather their lack of control over it. Likewise, in Don DeLillo’s novel White Noise (1985), the protagonist Jack Gladney experiences his daughter’s “utterance” of the car brand “Toyota Celica” as “beautiful and mysterious”, which “str[ikes] [him] with the impact of a moment of splendid transcendence”. Gladney then proceeds to relate his family’s “garbage” to his relatives’ selves as it is a “sign[] of [their] deepest nature”. Jack’s approach to human waste shows that what Cynthia Deitering defines as the “toxic consciousness”—the general awareness of the existence of toxicity in the landscape—is to be associated with the protagonist’s idea of “consumer consciousness”. Indeed, the term toxicity can also metaphorically refer to the “poisoned” nature of our relationship to and perception of specific places, objects, or situations. The viewer in national parks, for instance, tends to see the “sublime landscape” as a “series of picturesque scenes”, which allows him to consume the scene as an “object of artistic consumption”. Such examples point to different but related ways of examining distinct forms of toxicity that characterise our relationship with our physical environment. They also prompt us to examine the problematic nature of technology and progress while dealing with the elusive and paradoxical nature of the technological sublime. [less ▲]

In many applications, and in systems/synthetic biology in particular, it is desirable to compute control policies that force the trajectory of a bistable system from one equilibrium (the initial point) to another equilibrium (the target point), or in other words to solve the switching problem. It was recently shown that, for monotone bistable systems, this problem admits easyto-implement open-loop solutions in terms of temporal pulses (i.e., step functions of fixed length and fixed magnitude). In this paper, we develop this idea further and formulate a problem of convergence to an equilibrium from an arbitrary initial point. We show that this problem can be solved using a static optimization problem in the case of monotone systems. Changing the initial point to an arbitrary state allows to build closed-loop, event-based or open-loop policies for the switching/convergence problems. In our derivations we exploit the Koopman operator, which offers a linear infinite-dimensional representation of an autonomous nonlinear system. One of the main advantages of using the Koopman operator is the powerful computational tools developed for this framework. Besides the presence of numerical solutions, the switching/convergence problem can also serve as a building block for solving more complicated control problems and can potentially be applied to non-monotone systems. We illustrate this argument on the problem of synchronizing cardiac cells by defibrillation. Potentially, our approach can be extended to problems with different parametrizations of control signals since the only fundamental limitation is the finite time application of the control signal. Structural fire engineering has long relied on a prescriptive approach based on isolated member behavior under continuously heating standard fire. By definition, this approach does not allow comprehending the effects of interaction between members of a complete structure nor the effects of real fire exposure. Yet, such effects can have a significant influence on the response of real buildings to fire. Notably, when a structure has survived a fully developed fire, the cooling phase that inevitably follows generates effects that may endanger the structure stability. This has been attested by real structural collapses and poses a specific threat to firefighters. However, the behavior of structures under natural fire and the causes of failure during cooling are still not well understood. This research investigates the response of steel-framed structures to natural fires with the aim to analyze the possible collapse mechanisms during cooling. Numerical simulations by nonlinear finite element method are conducted for different fire scenarios and structural designs. The simulations model the thermo-mechanical behavior of the frames accounting for the interaction between members during the entire fire duration until burnout. Different collapse mechanisms during cooling are highlighted and discussed, including connection failure and progressive collapse under localized fire. In the latter case, collapse of members not directly affected by the fire occurs during the cooling phase. These mechanisms result from a complex combination of several factors, such as the recovery of thermal elongation, the recovery of stiffness, and the prior development of permanent strains in the heated members. The results show that steel-framed structures are subject to collapse during the cooling phase of natural fires. Therefore, natural fires with heating-cooling sequences represent a loading case that should be considered in structural fire analyses and could lead to specific design provisions to prevent the occurrence of collapse during cooling. Comme les écosystèmes dulçaquicoles, les écosystèmes marins sont soumis à une pression humaine croissante qui altère la qualité de l’eau et les communautés aquatiques. Près de 98 pourcents de l’eau de notre planète bleue est contenue dans les océans qui constituent le réceptacle final de tout ce que nous rejetons comme déchets (volontairement ou non). Moins accessible, les océans sont méconnus, souvent oubliés ou négligés et considérés comme une zone inépuisable et où tout se dilue ; actuellement encore 80% des eaux usées sont rejetées en mer sans traitement préalable, à peine 2 % des surfaces marines sont protégées. La Méditerranée est particulière à plus d’un égard, bassin de concentration, de faible surface (1% des océans) abritant pourtant plus de 10% de la biodiversité mondiale. Cette petite mer est un modèle pour les océanographes : en mesurant ce qui s’y passe, nous pouvons prédire ce que se déroulera à court ou moyen terme dans le reste des océans. Le laboratoire d’Océanologie est activement impliqué depuis une quinzaine d’années dans la mise au point d’indice de la qualité des masses d’eau côtières. Ces indices sont construits sur base des connaissances du milieu (variations naturelles), par la mesure des niveaux de contamination et des effets (observation et contamination en mésocosme) de cette pollution sur les communautés. Nous avons développé et validé des indices biologiques (PREI : Posidonia Rapid and Easy Index, ICAR Indice Caulerpa cylindracea ; espèce envahissante), de pollution (TEPI : Trace Element Pollution Index, TESVI : Trace Element Spatial Variation Index), de qualité paysagère (LIMA LIttoral MArin) … Ces indices sont utilisés actuellement dans le cadre de la DCE (Directive Cadre Eau), la DCSMM (Directive Cadre Stratégie pour le Milieu Marin) et dans des réseaux de surveillance en Méditerranée, ils sont un relais et un moyen de communication entre les scientifiques et les politiques, les gestionnaires. L’exportation et l’apprentissage de l’utilisation de ces indices sont un atout pour une gestion globale de l’eau à l’échelle de la Méditerranée. Leurs applications sur l’ensemble de la façade méditerranéenne ont, entre autre, mis en évidence l’impact positif de l’application de directives européennes en matière de gestion des eaux par rapport aux côtes de Nord de l’Afrique.
