Premature ejaculation (PE) is a disorder characterized by three components: (1) a rapid ejaculation, (2), a feeling of lack of control upon ejaculation, (3) and a distress related to this condition. The criterion of rapidity appears to be most controversial: some authors refer only to subjects’ judgment, while other ones set a maximum ejaculatory latency. Although it focused some criticisms related to a lack of objective latency criteria, the definition of PE propounded by the DSM-IV(-TR) remains most currently used. PE affects about 15 to 30% of the male population. However, the estimations can vary widely depending on populations and methodologies. Several factors contribute to the occurrence of the disorder: one may very probably charge bio-constitutional risks, learning factors, cultural and cognitive influences and the role of anxiety. No robust data allow to implicate personality factors other than anxiety. The influence of the age remains a controversial topic. Cognitive-behavioral techniques appear to be quite efficient in the treatment of PE. However the success rates are variable, and the precise nature of the therapeutic active process remains unclear. Serotonergic drugs and local anesthetics are also efficient, but their action remains strictly symptomatic. The usefulness of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors is disputed. Combining psychological and pharmacological approaches might be promising. Unfortunately, there is a lack of clinical trials in this field. Although effective treatments do exist, only a few affected people appear to use them satisfactorily. Efforts have still to be made in order to train adequately heath practitioners and to make the treatments more accessible to the public. [less ▲]

Background: Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) affects performance and well-being in horses. Diagnosis is primarily reached by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytology but this is invasive and requires sedation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify candidate blood biomarkers of IAD using species-specific expression microarrays. Methods: Horse Gene Expression Microarrays were used to investigate global mRNA expression in circulating leukocytes from healthy and IAD-affected standardbreds and endurance horses. Results: Nine genes were significantly differentially regulated in standardbreds and 61 in endurance horses (P < 0.001). These genes were mainly related to inflammation (eg. ALOX15B, PLA2G12B and PENK), oxidant/antioxidant balance (eg. DUOXA2 and GSTO1-1) and stress (eg. V1aR, GRLF1, Homer-2 and MAOB). DUOXA2, ALOX15B, PLA2G12B, MAOB and GRLF1 variations of expression were further validated by RT-qPCR. The deregulation of the oxidant/antioxidant balance was demonstrated at the protein level by an increase of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in heparinised whole blood of IAD-affected standardbreds (P = 0.0025) and endurance horses (P = 0.0028). There was good correlation (r = 0.7354) between BAL neutrophil percentage and whole blood GPx activity in all horses. Conclusions: There is accumulating evidence that, even when systemic clinical signs are not evident, circulating leukocyte gene expression can reflect responses of other tissues, leading to potential diagnostic applications in the future. Although not specific for IAD, whole blood GPx activity appears to reflect BAL neutrophil percentage. This finding should be further assessed by testing a larger number of horses. [less ▲]

In this paper, different formulations of Maxwell equations are combined for computing the shielding effectiveness of enclosures made from heterogeneous periodic materials. The validity of the homogenized parameters given by Maxwell-Garnett rules in the frequency domain are tested in the time domain using a nodal discontinuous Galerkin method, which uses an interface condition based on analytical solution in the frequency domain to replace a conductive sheet. This interface condition allows to avoid meshing the thin sheet, thus reducing the computational cost. Results of scattering by composite enclosures are presented in the frequency domain thanks to a Fast Fourier Transform. [less ▲]

This paper presents a modeling of thin sheets. An interface condition based on analytical solution is used to avoid a fine mesh. This condition is integrated in a time domain Discontinuous Galerkin method in order to evaluate the shielding effectiveness. This approach is validated by a comparison with analytical solution. 2D and 3D cavities are simulated to illustrate the efficiency of the condition. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

We show that there exist c-generated algebras (and dense in C^infty([0,1])) every nonzero element of which is a nowhere Gevrey diff erentiable function. This leads to results of dense algebrability (and, therefore, lineability) of functions enjoying this property. In the process of proving these results we also provide a new construction of nowhere Gevrey di fferentiable functions. [less ▲]

In this paper, we offer a short overview of a number of methods that have been reported in the computational-mechanics literature for quantifying uncertainties in engineering applications. Within a probabilistic framework, we describe the characterization of uncertainties using mathematical statistics methods, the propagation of uncertainties through computational models using either Monte Carlo sampling or stochastic expansion methods, and the sensitivity analysis of uncertainties using variance- and differentiation-based methods. We restrict our attention to nonintrusive methods that can be implemented as wrappers around existing computer programs, thus requiring no modification of the source code. We include some recent advances in the propagation and sensitivity analysis of uncertainties that are characterized by arbitrary probability distributions that may exhibit statistical dependence. Finally, we demonstrate the methods integrated in the proposed overview through a nonlinear engineering application relevant to metal forming. [less ▲]

Jatropha curcas oil has an insecticidal activity harnessed by the farmers in Niger. In this study, we compared the insecticidal activity of two batches of oil conserved during 70 days, one exposed to light and the other kept in the dark. The insecticidal efficacy was evaluated in a field with three concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) trial on the main pests of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) and in a laboratory test on Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybon (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) with different concentrations of crude oil (50; 100; 150 and 200 µl). No difference in insecticidal effect was found between the two modes of oil conservation, both in the laboratory and in the field. In the field, regardless of the mode of conservation, the concentrations of 10% of J. curcas oil enables a reduction of over than 80% of thrips, aphids, and bugs compared to the control. Its increased seeds yield more than 50%. The concentration of 15% gives an insecticidal effect comparable to that of the reference treatment (deltaméthrine) but induces phytotoxicity symptoms on the leaves of Cowpea. [less ▲]

Anatomical, systematic, and paleobiogeographical data on the Devonian antiarchs from Belgium are reviewed, updated and completed thanks to new data from the field and re-examination of paleontological collections. The material of Bothriolepis lohesti Leriche, 1931 is enhanced and the species better described. An undetermined species of Bothriolepis is recorded from the Famennian of Modave (Liège Province), one species of Asterolepis redescribed from the Givetian of Hingeon and another one described from the Givetian of Mazy (Namur Province). Grossilepis rikiki sp. nov. is recorded from the Famennian tetrapod-bearing locality of Strud (Namur Province) and from the Famennian of Moresnet (Liège Province). It is the first occurrence of Grossilepis after the Frasnian and on the central southern coast of the Euramerican continent. Its occurrence in the Famennian of Belgium may be the result of a late arrival from the Moscow Platform and the Baltic Depression, where the genus is known from Frasnian deposits. Remigolepis durnalense sp. nov. is described from the Famennian of Spontin near Durnal (Namur Province). Except for the doubtful occurrence of Remigolepis sp. in Scotland, this is the first record of this genus in Western Europe. Its occurrence in Belgium reinforces the strong faunal affinities between Belgium and East Greenland and the hypothesis of a hydrographical link between the two areas during the Late Devonian.
