In the first part of this survey, we present classical notions arising in combinatorics on words: growth function of a language, complexity function of an infinite word, pattern avoidance, periodicity and uniform recurrence. Our presentation tries to set up a unified framework with respect to a given binary relation. In the second part, we mainly focus on abelian equivalence, $k$-abelian equivalence, combinatorial coefficients and associated relations, Parikh matrices and $M$-equivalence. In particular, some new refinements of abelian equivalence are introduced. [less ▲]

An unusual recycling Mitsunobu reaction proved to be successful to couple two fragments in the course of the synthesis of the hydrophobic moiety of rhamnolipid derivatives. Based on the obtained pivotal intermediate, a one pot ‘cross-metathesis/reduction’ approach gave access to structural variations of the side chains. Further study of these molecules will contribute to a better understanding of the role of the lipid moiety in immunostimulatory and plant defense eliciting properties. [less ▲]

This report is a policy analysis of legislation on employee sharing and how it is practised in Belgium. More specifically it focuses on groupement d’employeurs/werkgeversgroeperingen, or employer groups. The report discusses the main features and characteristics of the legislation introduced, the actual organisation and implementation of employer groups and their outcomes, as well as their key strengths and weaknesses and potential for transferability. The report is based on available literature and documents about employee sharing and interviews with a variety of stakeholders. This report is also complemented by findings from a case study on an employer group in Wallonia carried out as part of this project – see case study 3: Job’Ardent. [less ▲]

Insults, gossip, and slander are the origin of many conflicts during the Ancien Régime. They are used to hurt someone’s honour or reputation, which are essential values to keeping good relationships in society. People need to defend their honour when they are injured. They can seek reparations by taking legal action or opting for infrajudicial practices, such as contacting a notary. This possibility has attracted too little attention from historians whereas notarial records are a massive source of information related to conflicts affecting people's daily lives. Indeed, during the eighteenth century, inhabitants of Liège contacted a notary in order to find an agreement, clear their name of an insult, or to write their version of an aggression. [less ▲]

This text focuses on how teachers and other institutional actors (such as headmasters, psychologists and social workers) offer guidance to pupils in secondary schools. It stresses the epistemological and empirical challenges inherent in a study of decisionmaking in school guidance as used by teachers, based on field theory. The text begins with a presentation of several sociological studies of how teachers construct their judgments about pupils. It emphasizes the strength of the concept of field as a key to understanding the role played by teachers in the formal process of educational (school) guidance, specifically in the case of the French "Grandes Ecoles". This section goes on to show that, with the weakening of the autonomy of (the) educational institutions, (the) French sociology of education moved away from (the) Bourdieu’s perspective, (and) to focus(ed) on the moral pluralism inherent in education and the ethical tensions that institutional actors face. The second part of the text discusses the findings of socioanthropological fieldwork undertaken in secondary schools in the French Community of Belgium. This section argues that the dynamics of judgments made by teachers today canbest be understood through their structural linkages with the structure of the field of secondary education. [less ▲]
