We present the preliminary seismic modeling of one of the hottest and most compact subdwarf pulsators, PB 8783 (EO Ceti). This is a well observed hot subdwarf star, including a 78 d campaign in white light photometry that we carried out at Mount Bigelow, Arizona, during the fall 2007. PB 8783 has also been observed at length in spectroscopy, revealing a spectrum highly contaminated by a main sequence companion. It is extremely difficult to disentangle the contribution of the two components and, as a consequence of this, the exact nature of the hot subdwarf (sdB or sdO star) is undetermined. We propose here to test the two hypotheses by asteroseismology. Although the sdB possibility cannot be excluded, the pulsation modes observed in PB 8783 are much better accommodated in the case of an sdO star. [less ▲]

Understanding the formation of sdB stars is one of the remaining challenges of stellar evolution theory. Competing scenarios have been proposed to account for the existence of such evolved objects. They give quite different mass distributions for resulting sdB stars. Detailed asteroseismic analyses, including mass estimates, of 15 pulsating hot B subdwarfs have been published in the past decade. Masses have also been reliably determined by light curve modeling and spectroscopy for 7 sdB components of eclipsing or reflection binaries. We present here the empirical mass distribution of sdB stars on the basis of these samples. Implications are also briefly discussed. [less ▲]

Agricultural management practices influence soil structure, but the characterization of these modifications and consequences are still not completely understood. In this study, we aim at improving water retention and hydraulic conductivity curves using both classical soil techniques and X-ray microtomography in the context of tillage simplification. We show a good match for retention and conductivity functions between macroscopic measurements and microtomographic information. Microtomography highlights the presence of a secondary pore system. Analysis of structural parameters for these pores appears to be significant and offers additional clues for objects differentiation. We show that relatively fast scans supply not only good results, but also enhance near saturation characterization, making microtomography a highly competitive instrument for routine soil characterization. Introduction: In healthy conditions, group-level fMRI resting state analyses identify ten resting state networks (RSNs) of cognitive relevance. Here, we aim to assess the tennetwork model in severely brain-injured patients suffering from disorders of consciousness and to identify those networks which will be most relevant to discriminate between patients and healthy subjects. Methods: 300 fMRI volumes were obtained in 27 healthy controls and 53 patients in minimally conscious state (MCS), vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/ UWS) and coma. Independent component analysis (ICA) reduced data dimensionality. The ten networks were identified by means of a multiple template-matching procedure and were tested on neuronality properties (neuronal vs non-neuronal) in a data-driven way. Univariate analyses detected between-group differences in networks’ neuronal properties and estimated voxel-wise functional connectivity in the networks, which were significantly less identifiable in patients. A nearest-neighbor “clinical” classifier was used to determine the networks with high between-group discriminative accuracy. Results: Healthy controls were characterized by more neuronal components compared to patients in VS/UWS and in coma. Compared to healthy controls, fewer patients in MCS and VS/UWS showed components of neuronal origin for the left executive control network, default mode network (DMN), auditory, and right executive control network. The “clinical” classifier indicated the DMN and auditory network with the highest accuracy (85.3%) in discriminating patients from healthy subjects. [less ▲]

Detailed seismic studies of hot B subdwarf (sdB) stars using the forward modeling approach provide measurements of their fundamental parameters at very interesting precisions. For instance, masses, radii, and log g values derived this way are typically claimed at ∼ 1 − 2%, ∼ 0.5%, and ∼ 0.1 % precision, respectively. However, this method relies on still imperfect stellar models that contains various uncertainties associated with their inner structure and the underlying microphysics. A signature of these imperfections is the inability of current best-fit seismic models to reproduce all the observed oscillation frequencies at the precision of the observations. Therefore, the question of the accuracy (as opposed to the precision) of the derived parameters obtained from this approach is legitimate. Here, we revisit the question of precision and accuracy based on new, third generation, complete static models of sdB stars developed for asteroseismology and applied to the case of the eclipsing system PG 1336-018. This allows us to evaluate the reliability of the method and quantify the impact of various uncertainties in the stellar models on the derived stellar parameters. Finally, we discuss the intrinsic potential of asteroseismology for precise measurements of stellar parameters and show that we are far from having fully exploited this technique in terms of precision that can, in principle, be achieved. We present several examples of partial mode identification for rapidly pulsating subdwarf B stars on the basis of multi-colour observations. Three targets (V391 Per, Balloon 090100001, and EC 11583−2708) were analysed from multi-colour photometry, while studies were conducted from time-series spectrophotometry for two further stars (EC 20338−1925 and EC 01541−1409). In all cases, periodicities strongly dominating the frequency spectrum are associated with radial modes, indicating a clear hierarchy according to visibility when integrating over the visible disk of the star. In the last few years, we have carried out several extensive observational campaigns on pulsating hot subdwarf stars using the Mont4K CCD camera attached to the 1.55 m Kuiper Telescope on Mount Bigelow. The Mont4K is a joint partnership between the University of Arizona and Universite ́ de Montre ́al. It was designed and built at Steward Observatory. Using the Mont4K/Kuiper combination, we have so far, and among others, gathered high-sensitivity broadband light curves for PG 1219+534, PB8783, HS 0702+6043, and Feige 48. We report very briefly on some of the most interesting observational results that came out of these campaigns. [less ▲]

Background: Parathyroid carcinoma (PCa) is rare and often difficult to differentiate initially from benign disease. Because PCa oversecretes amino PTH that is detected by third-generation but not by second-generation PTH assays, the normal generation PTH ( 1) is inverted in PCa (ie, 1). Objective: The objective of the investigation was to study the utility and advantages of automated generation PTH ratio measurements using the Liaison XL platform over existing manual techniques. Setting: The study was conducted at a tertiary-referral academic center. Design: This was a retrospective laboratory study. Subjects: Eleven patients with advanced PCa (mean age 56.0 y). The controls were patients with 1°-hyperparathyroidism (n 144;meanage 53.8 y), renal transplantation (n 41;meanage 50.6 y), hemodialysis (n 80; mean age 65.2 y), and healthy elderly subjects (n 40; mean age 72.6 y). Results: The median (interquartile range) generation PTH ratio was 1.16 (1.10 –1.38) in the PCa group, which was significantly higher than the control groups: 0.74 (hemodialysis, 0.71–0.75), 0.77 (renal transplant, 0.73–0.79), 0.80 (healthy elderly, 0.74–0.83), and 0.76 (1°-hyperparathyroidism, 0.74–0.78). An inverted -generation PTH ratio ( 1) was seen in 9 of 11 PCa patients (81.8%) and in 7 of 305 controls (2.3%), 3 of 80 hemodialysis (3.8%), and 4 of 144 1°-hyperparathyroidism patients (2.8%). Of four PCa patients who had a normal PTH ratio with the manual method, two had an inverted -generation PTH ratio with the automated method. Conclusions: Study of the -generation PTH ratio in large patient populations should be feasible using a mainstream automated platform like the Liaison XL. The current study confirms the utility of the inverted -generation PTH ratio as a marker of PCa (sensitivity: 81.8%; specificity: 97.3%). [less ▲]

In the framework of instrument calibration, straylight issues are a critical aspect that can deteriorate the optical performances of instrument. To cope with this, a new facility is designed dedicated for in-field and far field straylight characterization: up to 10-8 for in-field and up to 10-10 for far field straylight in the visible to NIR spectral ranges. Moreover, from previous straylight test performed at CSL, vacuum conditions are needed for reaching the 10-10 rejection requirement mainly to avoid air/dust diffusion. The major constrains are to design a straylight facility either for in-field and out-field straylight measurements. That requires high dynamic range at source level and a high radiance point source allowing small diverging collimated beam. Moreover, the straylight facility has to be implemented into a limited envelope and has to be built with vacuum compatible materials and black coating. As checking the facility performance requires an instrument better than the facility itself, that is no easy to find, so that the performances have been estimated through a modelisation into a non sequential optical software. This modelisation is based on CAD importation of mechanical design, on BRDF characteristics of black coating and on statistical averaging of ray tracing at instrument entrance. [less ▲]
