Obtaining a tar-free biosyngas from biomass gasification processes has been the subject of many studies in the past 2 decades, and it still remains the major technologic and economic challenge. Unfortunately, the countless publications about gasification technologies and different techniques permitting reduction of the tar present at the outlet of gasifier reactors usually confuse inexperienced persons who attempt to further research this subject. More than presenting the basis of biomass gasification technologies and positioning them among other bioenergies, this work mainly aims at reviewing and comparing the different methods developed in order to produce a tar-free biosyngas. In this way, biosyngas quality improvement can be obtained through different operating processes such as reactor designs, gasifying ratios, feedstock, temperature, and space ratio. Since catalytic destruction has proved to be one of the most convenient and efficient ways to eliminate undesirable tars, an important part of this work also highlights the catalytic and deactivating phenomena involved. Furthermore, this work takes inventory of numerous studies conducted to understand the influence of different properties, especially supports and active site compositions, on the tar reforming activities and lifetime of catalyst materials. Thus, this review aims at summarizing basic and more recent improvements applied to biomass gasification processes and catalytic syngas purification. [less ▲]

Ikaite precipitation within sea ice could act as a significant sink for atmospheric CO2. However, the fate of these ikaite crystals is still poorly understood. We quantify temporal inorganic carbon dynamics from initial sea ice formation from open water to its melt during a month-long experiment in a sea ice-seawater mesocosm pool. Within sea ice, ikaite precipitation and CO2 exchange with the atmosphere were the main processes affecting inorganic carbon dynamics, while the dissolution of ikaite was the main process affecting inorganic carbon dynamics in the underlying seawater. Based on the total alkalinity (TA) and total dissolved inorganic carbon (TCO2) within sea ice and seawater, we estimated ikaite precipitated up to 167 ± 3 µmol kg-1 within sea ice; up to 57 % of the ikaite precipitated within sea ice was exported to the underlying seawater where it was dissolved. Ikaite export from the ice to the underlying seawater was associated with brine rejection during sea ice growth, increased sea ice vertical connectivity due to the upward percolation of seawater, and meltwater flushing during sea ice melt. The dissolution of the ikaite crystals in the water column kept the seawater pCO2 undersaturated compared to the atmosphere in spite of increased salinity, TA, and TCO2 associated with sea ice growth. Results indicate that ikaite export from sea ice and its dissolution in the underlying seawater can potentially hamper the effect of oceanic acidification on the aragonite saturation state (Ωaragonite) in fall and winter in ice-covered areas, at the time when Ωaragonite is smallest. This paper aims at accounting for the uncertainties due to material structure and surface topology of microbeams in a stochastic multiscale model. For micro-resonators made of anisotropic polycrystalline materials, micro-scale uncertainties are due to the grain size, grain orientation, and to the surface profile. First, microscale realizations of stochastic volume elements (SVEs) are obtained based on experimental measurements. To account for the surface roughness, the SVEs are defined as a volume element having the same thickness as the MEMS, with a view to the use of a plate model at the structural scale. The uncertainties are then propagated up to an intermediate scale, the meso-scale, through a second-order homogenization procedure.From the meso-scale plate resultant material property realizations, a spatially correlated random field of the in plane, out of plane, and cross resultant material tensors can be characterized. Owing to this characterized random field, realizations of MEMS-scale problems can be defined on a plate finite element model. Samples of the macro-scale quantity of interest can then be computed by relying on a Monte-Carlo simulation procedure. As a case study, the resonance frequency of MEMS micro-beams is investigated for different uncertainty cases, such as grain preferred orientations and surface roughness effects. [less ▲]

Thiamine deficiency in the brain has been implicated in the development of dementia and symptoms of depression. Indirect evidence suggests that thiamine may contribute to these pathologies by controlling the activities of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β. While decreased GSK- 3β activity appears to impair memory, increased GSK-3β activity is associated with the distressed/depressed state. However, direct evidence for the effects of thiamine on GSK-3β function were not have not been reported. Here, we administered thiamine or, the more bioavailable precursor, benfotiamine at 200 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks to C57BL/6J mice, to determine whether treatment might affect behaviours that are known to be sensitive to GSK-3β activity and whether such administration impacts on GSK-3β expression within the brain. The mice were tested in models of contextual conditioning and extinction, a 5-day rat exposure stress test, and a modified swim test with repeated testing. Imipramine (7.5 mg/kg/day) was administered as a positive control for thiamine or benfotiamine. As for imipramine, both compounds inhibited the upregulation of GSK-3β induced by predator stress or repeated swimming, and reduced floating scores and the predator stress-induced behavioural changes in anxiety and exploration. Coincident, thiamine and benfotiamine improved learning and extinction of contextual fear, and the acquisition of the step-down avoidance task. Together, our data indicate that thiamine and benfotiamine have antidepressant/anti-stress effects in naïve animals that are associated with reduced GSK-3β expression. Importantly, the treatment also had pro-cognitive actions despite the impact on GSK-3β activity. [less ▲]

A new photo-sensitive diblock copolymer composed of a hydrophilic sequence of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) linked to a CO2-philic sequence of poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate) (PFDA) by a light sensitive o- nitrobenzyl group was successfully synthesized by RAFT polymerization and used as stabilizer for the free radical polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in dispersion in ?,?,?-trifluorotoluene and supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). Thanks to this fluorinated stabilizer, well-defined particles of PHEMA down to 350 nm of diameter were produced in scCO2. Advantageously, the photocleavable group at the block junction of the stabilizer could be cleaved by exposing the particles to UV light so that the fluorinated block could be extracted in TFT or scCO2. As supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, up to 80 % of the fluorinated block of the stabilizer can be removed, leading to efficient swelling and dispersion of the resulting PHEMA nanogels in water. Surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) using transobturator tape insertion is widely accepted. However several postoperative complications were reported in the literature including infections, abscess and fistula formation. Here we report a case of 57 year old female who presented with abscess and left vaginocutaneous buttock fistula 7 years after transobturator polypropelene tape insertion. Treatment included abscess drainage with dissection of the fistulous tract and removal of the left arm of the transobturator tape along with antibiotic coverage. Sinus drainage stopped after 3 days. Stress urinary incontinence didn't recur. Suspicion of fistula formation should rise in patients presenting with bothersome vaginal or cutaneous discharge after transobturator tape insertion. This case is particular since it describes a fistula complication with polypropelene tape which is unusual with this type of tapes. Treatment of such complication should always consist of surgical removal of the mesh to allow closure of the fistulous tract. [less ▲]

Tenth pharaoh of this dynasty and father of Tutankhamun, Akhenaten (Amenhotep/Amenhotep IV) still fascinates Egyptologists and history lovers through the many questions surrounding his atypical rule. One of the most striking aspects of the so-called Amarna period concerns the representations of the pharaoh himself, very confusing compared to the traditional iconography of the New Kingdom. Siting controversies are commonplace, as well against the construction of roads, railways, nuclear waste disposals, as against windfarms. Local citizens resist against siting decisions taken by the authorities, following a dynamics often quoted as ‘Not In My Back Yard’. Yet contested for its lack of analytical value, NIMBY is still used strategically by actors to qualify citizens as irrational and egoistic. Beyond this labelling, many factors are investigated to understand the dynamics behind siting controversies. In this paper, we focus on the impact of the legal procedure structuring the implantation of windfarms in the Walloon Region (Belgium), and its translations within different decision making processes in specific case studies. To that regard, we consider the legal procedure as a ‘public policy instrument’. It is neither neutral nor natural, and carry values and interests. It organizes inter-personal relations between actors, and is potentially catalyzer of frustrations. In addition, this legal procedure is the object of translations within different contexts, including different actors participating to specific decision making processes. The empirical approach of this paper is based on case studies data and on the use of an innovative methodology called ‘Open Process Workshop’. This methodology consists in a structured workshop with key stakeholders, during which the legal procedure is questioned. Overall, we demonstrate that the focus on the legal procedure - and its translations within different decision making processes - allows systemic analysis providing deep understandings of controversies and reaffirming the interlinks between ‘the social’ and ‘the technical’ in such controversies. In addition, we argue that the methodology used fosters the production of innovative knowledge, mutual understanding and collective learning between the participants. [less ▲]

Scientists in many fields of research have developed models, theories and concepts attempting to grasp and manage dangers that are often difficult to imagine. Among the different perspectives, the Science and Technology Studies (STS) Vulnerability Approach seems very promising. Relying on a constructivist paradigm, it is based on an inductive collection and analysis of a wide range of factors, with a particular focus on cultural factors and actual day-to-day practices. In this paper, we present the roots of this approach and we display findings based on three case studies exploring emergency planning in three different contexts (a city near a SEVESO plant, a school near a nuclear plant, and a city confronted to multiple catastrophic scenarios). The cases studies were realized by conducting three Focus Groups with different types of stakeholders (citizens, teachers, firemen, decision makers, etc.). After presenting the results of the case studies, we discuss how stakeholders’ participation can inform such type of vulnerability analysis in the context of emergency planning. We argue that participation fosters a deep understanding of actual safety governance practices which allows innovative results to emerge as well as it initiates a learning process among the participants. It contributes to questioning the relations between decision-makers, experts and citizens. It has the potential of bypassing the positivist and quantitative rationale of safety, and thus, of redefining the vulnerability governance. As a conclusion, we question the role of such STS vulnerability approach within the actual vulnerability governance. [less ▲]

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium, a protozoan parasite transmitted by anopheles mosquitoes, and was responsible for 438 000 deaths worldwide in 2015 according to the last World Malaria report.1 The resistance of parasites to available and affordable medicines has become a widespread problem in exposed countries, making the search of new antimalarial compounds still necessary. As the immeasurable therapeutic potential of plants is well established2, natural products could be an interesting source of new antimalarial drugs. Indeed, according Newmann and Cragg, more than 60% of the antiparasitic drugs discovered between 1981 and 2014 were unaltered naturals products (12.5%), natural products derivatives (31.3%) and synthetic drugs with a natural product pharmacophore (18.8%).3 Then, the pharmacological and phytochemical study of plants, especially from traditional pharmacopoeias can be of first interest to discovered new antimalarial compound and also to valorize the traditional knowledge. The first part of the talk will concern some examples of results obtained in the lab : the in vivo activity of strychnogucine B, which was isolated from strychnos icaja and semi-synthetized, the optimization of ellagic acid as a lead in the treatment of malaria and the validation of MIT from Mezoneuron benthamianum. In the second part of the talk, the work about Poupartia borbonica, an endemic plant from Reunion Island studied in the framework of a collaboration with the University of Reunion Island will be presented.
