This paper aims at studying the effect of corporate disclosures on information asymmetry and stock-market liquidity in France. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of information included in the annual reports on investor’s behavior. This is proxied by the information asymmetry component of the bid-ask spread and stock market liquidity. Our sample includes 196 French listed firms over a period ranging from 2004 to 2007. We opt for an explanatory study using OLS regressions to examine the nature of the relationship between information disclosed in annual reports and bid-ask spreads a proxy for information asymmetry and stock market liquidity. The results show that the extent of corporate disclosures in annual reports positively influences the liquidity of the French market and negatively affects the adverse selection component of the bid-ask spread. This effect is further confirmed by the commitment to IFRS by French-listed firms from 2005. The decomposition of the total score in the sub-indices shows that non-financial and financial information are important in trading decisions while strategic information may be attractive only for long-term positions [less ▲]

Historical soil contamination within a 3 km radius of a former ore treatment plant was evaluated. A total of 247 topsoil samples were collected in a stratified random sampling design taking into account three factors: land use (LU), soil type (ST) and wind direction (WD). Concentrations of trace elements (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) and major elements (Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Al, Mn) as well as various soil properties (pHwater, pHKCl, TOC and N) were measured. Total Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations were higher than typical background values. Enrichment factors for these three metals were, respectively, 260, 77.4 and 35.5. Principal components analysis (PCA) and factor analysis segregated anthropogenic contamination as a premier factor in influencing concentrations, followed by a second lithogenic factor. The anthropogenic origin of substantial contamination was confirmed though mapping of sample locations relative to contaminant sources. Factor 1 (26.5% of the variance) impacts a large area around the contaminated site and is also indicative of WD influence. Factor 2 (23.9% of the variance) is naturally linked to the local lithology and geology. LU and soil fertility are, respectively, represented by factor 3 (16.5% of the variance), which is linked to pH, and factor 4 (9.3% of the variance), related to organic content. The significance of landscape factors in the spatial distribution of metallic trace elements (MTE) was assessed with an ANCOVA using “distance to the source” as a covariate. Results of the analysis support the hypothesis that Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations are mainly driven by anthropogenic factors, specifically historical industrial activity at the former ore treatment plant. The ANCOVA also provides a means to quantify the impact of LU and ST as well, particularly on MTE availability in soils. The presence of MTE in soil poses known, and potentially significant, risks to both human health and the environment. [less ▲]

The inability to vocally match a pitch can be caused by poor pitch perception or by poor vocal-motor control. Although previous studies have tried to examine the relationship between pitch perception and vocal production, they have failed to control for the timbre of the target to be matched. In the present study, we compare pitch matching accuracy with an unfamiliar instrument (the slider) and with the voice, designed such that the slider plays back recordings of the participant’s own voice. We also measured pitch accuracy in singing a familiar melody (“Happy Birthday”) to assess the relationship between single pitch matching tasks and melodic singing. Our results showed that participants (all nonmusicians) were significantly better at matching recordings of their own voices with the slider than with their voice, indicating that vocal-motor control is an important limiting factor on singing ability. We also found significant correlations between the ability to sing a melody in tune and vocal pitch matching, but not instrumental pitch matching. Better melodic singers also tended to have higher quality voices (as measured by acoustic variables). These results provide important evidence about the ultimate causes of poor singing ability, and demonstrate that single pitch matching tasks can be useful in measuring general singing abilities. Three chondrichthyan radiations are registered in the Famennian of the Ardenne Massif (Belgium). These radiations are already observed in Morocco and in the Carnic Alps, their acme being related with the early expansa transgression. Comparisons of univariate statistical descriptors like Margalef richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index show variations between both margins of the Palaeotethys, variations interpreted in terms of trophic relationships. The Ardenne area, a northern shallow carbonate platform is characterized during the Famennian by endemic shark taxa with durophagous dentition. The southern open deep-sea area, the Variscan Sea, contains large placoderms probably disclosing a negative feedback on “cladodont” chondrichthyans. This supports the hypothesis that the Armorica platelet behaved like a barrier between the central southern Laurussia and northern Gondwana. [less ▲]

Although mobility management by employers is an increasingly common practice, literature is scarce on the real impact of the applied measures. In this perspective, the objective of this paper is to assess the impact on car use of the measures adopted by employers located in Wallonia. In order to achieve this objective, the article develops simulations that put forward the impact of the measures based on their interrelations with other modal choice factors. Our assessment leads to the conclusion that measures promoting public transport and car-pooling can reduce solo car driving between 7,2 % and 8,4 %. In contrast to our assumption, measures promoting public transport are less effective in central areas than in urban outskirts. Regarding measures promoting the use of bicycle, the findings suggest that the modal shift occurs from other modes rather than from car use. [less ▲]

Our essay focuses on some methodological issues concerning the semiotic analysis of practice. We will initially retrace the debate about the epistemological relationship between text and action, outlining the forms of enunciative praxis through different levels of pertinence analysis. Secondly, we propose the concept of ‘textualization’ as a mediation between text and action: textualizations (photographs, videos, notes) organize and represent practices which are in themselves ephemeral and elusive. Finally, we will consider the textual diagrammatization that we call ‘notation’: this analytical form of mediation between text and practice does not have the same status of in-vivo textualisations, but it works like an ex-post reconstruction which highlights the main gestures and exchanges while performing their grammaticalization. A more general aim of this essay is an enquiry into the legitimate objects of textual semiotics: what are the objects that it can analyze without betraying its principle of immanence, but also without being confined to it and, as a consequence, being unable to analyze practices and respond to topical questions on social issues and on the research in the human sciences? The mechanical behavior of mettalic materials deeply depends on the size of samples. For specimen dimensions de creasing from a few millimeters to a few micrometers, the general observed trend is a softening of the mechanical behavior in tension which affects the stress level and the strain hardening. This effect is triggered by the derease of the number of grains across the thickness ( also called thickness"t" over grain size "d" ratio). The objective of this work is to provide new experimental results in order to analyse the miniaturization size effects for various stress paths without strain gradients across the thickness of the samples. To this aim, experimental tensil tests, large tensile tests and shear tests have been performed on Ni sheets ( 0.5mm) with various grain sizes ensuring different t/d ratios. Results show that the miniaturization softening is affected by triaxiality, the larger is this parameter, the lower is the mechanicval softening. These features seem to be linked to surface effects which are larger for low triaxiality stress paths. Attempts of numerical simulations using strain gradient crystal plasticity model are also performed to confirm the role played by surface effects. [less ▲]

A new species of the phlyctaeniid arthrodire genus Groenlandaspis from the upper Famennian of Belgium is described. The remains of Groenlandaspis potyi sp. nov. consist of dissociated thoracic armor elements, but the specimen designed to be the holotype displays the median dorsal, anterior and posterior dorsolateral plates in connection. Though incomplete, the new species is characterized by an equilateral triangle-shaped median dorsal plate, a protruding posterodorsal apron of the posterior dorsolateral plate behind the overlap area for the median dorsal plate, and an overall lack of ornamentation. Groenlandaspis potyi sp. nov. constitutes the second occurrence of a Groenlandaspis species in continental Europe after the description of Groenlandaspis thorezi from upper Famennian quarries of Belgium. Another probable new species of Groenlandaspis is also described, though of unknown locality and horizon; it can however be deduced from the upper Famennian of Belgium without more precision. Together with some unpublished material of groenlandaspidids from the Famennian tetrapod-bearing locality of Strud, this material highlights the richness of the Groenlandaspididae diversity in Belgium. The discovery of Groenlandaspis potyi sp. nov. in Belgium reinforces the Famennian global distribution of this widespread genus during this period. Also, since those organisms have possibly been considered as non-marine indicators, this material is another argument pleading for close relationships between Euramerica and Gondwana around the Frasnian-Famennian boundary.

This work presents a mixed penalty-duality formulation from an augmented Lagrangian approach for treating the contact inequality constraints. The augmented Lagrangian approach allows to regularize the non differentiable contact terms and gives a C1 differentiable saddle-point functional. The relative displacement of two contacting bodies is described in the framework of the Finite Element Method (FEM) using the mortar method, which gives a smooth representation of the contact forces across the bodies interface. To study the robustness and performance of the proposed algorithm, validation numerical examples with finite deformations and large slip motion are presented. [less ▲]
