Mutualistic interactions between ant and aphid species have been the subject of considerable historical and contemporary investigations, the primary benefits being cleaning and protection for the aphids and carbohydrate-rich honeydew for the ants. Questions remained, however, as to the volatile semiochemical factor influencing this relationship. A recent study highlighted the role of bacterial honeydew volatile compounds in ant attraction. Here, ant’s ability to distantly discriminate two aphid species was investigated based on bacterial honeydew semiochemicals emissions using a two-way olfactometer. Both the mutualistic black bean aphid (Aphis fabae L.) and the non-myrmecophilous pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris) were found to be attractive for the black garden ant (Lasius niger L.). The level of attraction was similar in both assays (control versus one of the aphid species). However, when given a choice between these two aphid species, ants showed a significant preference for Aphis fabae. Honeydew volatiles, mostly from bacterial origins, are known to be a key element in ant attraction. Using the same olfactometry protocol, the relative attractiveness of volatiles emitted by honeydews collected from each aphid species and by bacteria isolated from each honeydew was in investigated. Again, ants significantly preferred volatiles released by Aphis fabae honeydew and bacteria. This information suggests that microbial honeydew volatiles enable ants to distantly discriminate aphid species. These results emphasize the importance of investigating the presence and potential effects of microbes in insect symbioses. [less ▲]

In the framework of instrument calibration, straylight issues are a critical aspect that can deteriorate the optical performances of instrument. To cope with this, a new facility is designed dedicated for in-field and far field straylight characterization: up to 10-8 for in-field and up to 10-10 for far field straylight in the visible to NIR spectral ranges. Moreover, from previous straylight test performed at CSL, vacuum conditions are needed for reaching the 10-10 rejection requirement mainly to avoid air/dust diffusion. The major constrains are to design a straylight facility either for in-field and out-field straylight measurements. That requires high dynamic range at source level and a high radiance point source allowing small diverging collimated beam. Moreover, the straylight facility has to be implemented into a limited envelope and has to be built with vacuum compatible materials and black coating. As checking the facility performance requires an instrument better than the facility itself, that is no easy to find, so that the performances have been estimated through a modelisation into a non sequential optical software. This modelisation is based on CAD importation of mechanical design, on BRDF characteristics of black coating and on statistical averaging of ray tracing at instrument entrance. [less ▲]

En 2004 a eu lieu une importante réforme concernant la politique d’activation en Belgique : le Plan d’accompagnement des chômeurs (PAC) qui prévoit le renforcement de l’accompagnement des chômeurs, effectué par les Services publics de l’emploi (SPE), la mise en place de la procédure d’activation du comportement de recherche d’emploi, effectuée par l’Office national de l’emploi (Onem), ainsi que l’échange systématique de données entre les SPE régionaux et le Fédéral. Désormais, des agents, dénommés facilitateurs, sont spécifiquement chargés de l’évaluation du comportement de recherche d’emploi des chômeurs. Lors des entretiens d’évaluation, l’indemnisation des chômeurs est en jeu. Si la procédure d’évaluation est clairement définie par un cadre règlementaire, la décision, quant à elle, résulte d’un travail d’interprétation qu’effectue l’agent en situation de face à face avec le demandeur d’emploi (DE). Nous tenterons de décrire l’activité de jugement des facilitateurs et montrerons que la décision de ces derniers n’est ni totalement arbitraire, ni totalement déterminée par la réglementation : elle résulte de l’interaction avec le chômeur et de la mobilisation d’une multitude d’appuis conventionnels de l’action (Dodier, 1993). Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a pro-oxidant enzyme associated with decreased motility in thawed equine semen. This study aimed to describe MPO concentration, activity and subunits in raw and thawed semen and to correlate these data with motilities in raw and thawed semen. Semen samples from five stallions were collected four times. Motilities were assessed in raw and thawed semen. MPO assays were performed in raw seminal plasma, raw sperm-rich pellet and thawed semen. Total and active MPO concentrations were, respectively, assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and specific immunological extraction followed by enzymatic detection. MPO subunits present in semen were characterized by Western 3 blot. Purified active MPO was added in PBS and freezing extender to control its activity during freezing procedure. Differences between medians were determined using Kruskal– Wallis test, and correlations were determined using Spearman’s test for nonparametric data. Active MPO concentration was low in seminal plasma and thawed semen, but high in pellet (p = 0.0058), as the opposite relation was observed for total MPO concentration (p < 0.0001). In seminal plasma and post- thaw semen, inactive 86-kDa MPO precursor was mainly observed. Purified MPO activity was decreased in the extender (p = 0.0286). MPO activity in pellet was highly correlated with thawed progressive motility (r = 􏰑0.5576, p = 0.0086). Inac- tive MPO precursor and unknown low molecular weight inactive MPO precursor subunits explain low MPO activity in semen. Major MPO activity was observed in pellet, and post- thaw loss of activity is partially explained by MPO inactiva- tion in extender. Thawed semen motility was negatively correlated with MPO activity in pellet, becoming a potential freezability predictor. [less ▲]

The aim of this study is to characterize monovarietal virgin olive oils (VOOs) of new high-density plantings system of three cultivars (Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki) which have been recently introduced in the eastern mediterranean region of Morocco. In this study, we have also conducted comparison between those monovarietal VOOs and olive oil of the local olive cultivar Picholine marocaine. Monovarietal VOOs characterization has been carried out by analysing several parameters, including quality index and olive oil stability to oxidation. Significant differences between the analysed olive oils were highlighted. They depend on cultivars and technological conditions of processing. We have noticed that Koroneiki olive oil have higher content of phenols (459.48 mg kg-1) and have the best value of oxidative stability (93.16 h). On the other hand Arbrosana’s VOO has low content of total phenols (260.85 mg kg-1) but it was distinguished by its higher content of alpha-tocopherol (460.07 mg kg-1). In addition, ten phenolic compounds present in virgin olive oils, were identified and quantitatively assessed by HPLC. Hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, luteoline, pinoresinol and apigenin were the main phenolic compounds in those analyzed monovarietal VOOS. [less ▲]

Lignocellulosic biomass residues have attracted attention for the sustainable production of molecules for material and energetic use through biochemical conversion. Their recalcitrant structure prevents a broader use and asks for the development of sustainable techniques that can efficiently separate, recover and valorize the constituting components. In a cascading concept, residual streams of such processes can be further exploited in an attempt to valorize the largest possible fraction of the initial material. Three lignocellulosic substrates, namely dried sugar beet pulp, wheat bran and miscanthus straw, were upstream fractionated by steam explosion to extract the hemicellulose fraction. This study evaluated the valorization of the residual solid fraction through mixed acidogenic fermentation for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) as platform chemicals. Batch experiments have been conducted for the reference material (non-treated) and the solid fraction remaining after steam explosion, with and without the addition of an external mixed inoculum. Steam explosion residues contained less hemicellulose than the initial materials. The difference in the fermentation profile between steam explosion residues and non-treated substrates is dependent on the substrate. Maximum total VFA (tVFA) concentration was 18.8 gCOD/kgmixed_liquor, and maximum yield of chemical oxygen demand (COD) conversion into tVFAwas 33 % for the case of non-treated inoculated beet pulp.
