[less ▲]

Bone charcoal (BC) is being developed as a treatment for decontaminating polluted water. In this study, bone charcoal was obtained by pyrolysis of cow bone. Further, for the wastewater depollution with these new materials, their performance in the elimination of copper from aqueous solutions has to be determined. The minimum time to reach the removal equilibrium by adsorption was 10 min with a maximum of copper removal equal to 9,615 mg/g. the kinetics models were applied to fit the our experimental data. Actually, they have show excellent correlations with the pseudo-second-order model wich has presented a linear correlation coefficient equal to 0.941. It was verified that the HCl desorption system has the highest efficiency. [less ▲]

This paper deals with adnominal possession in Ancient Egyptian, focusing on constructions involving a pronominal possessor. In early Egyptian, a single construction is attested: substantive (possessee) + bound person marker (possessor). From the 6th Dynasty onwards, a new construction, which is built from a demonstrative determiner, appears: pAy + bound person marker (possessor) + substantive (possessee). In order to describe the gradual encroachment of the innovative possessive determiner pAy-f on the older construction with the possessive bound person marker, this study proposes a discourse-oriented analysis, using the notion of ‘subjective deixis.’ [less ▲]

In order to understand the dynamic of the (sub)urbanisation and so, to quantify the anthropogenic effects of the rapid growth of tropical cities, it is crucial to find and apply valuable methods. In this contribution, the transferability of the Rüdisser et al. (2012) «Distance to Nature» hemeroby assessment method to the landscape surrounding the city of Lubumbashi (DRC) is evaluated. That methodology has the advantage of taking structural connectivity into account by computing the distance to natural habitats. As it had never been applied to an African city before, some adjustments (fitting of the local land uses types into the hemeroby levels designed to Austria) and amendments (suppression of the final classification into hemeroby level simplification) are proposed. Moreover, an analysis of the decanal (2002-2013) hemeroby dynamics is presented. Results suggest that the Distance to Nature methodology is transferable but requires good field knowledge to define reference habitats and identify them in the Landsat classified images. There was a dramatic decrease of the «natural» and «near-natural» levels in the study extent during the studied period. In addition, 32% of the land underwent anthropisation increase, mostly around cities and following a ribbon development. [less ▲]

Current evidence continues to support the potential for bone turnover markers (BTM) to provide clinically useful information particularly for monitoring the efficacy of osteoporosis treatment. Many of the limitations identified earlier remain, principally in regard to the relationship between BTM and incident fractures. Important data are now available on reference interval values for CTX and PINP across a range of geographic regions and for individual clinical assays. An apparent lack of comparability between current clinical assays for CTX has become evident indicating the possible limitations of combining such data for meta-analyses. Harmonization of units for reporting serum/plasma CTX (ng/L) and PINP (mug/L) is recommended. The development of international collaborations continues with an important initiative to combine BTM results from clinical trials in osteoporosis in a meta-analysis and an assay harmonization program are likely to be beneficial. It is possible that knowledge derived from clinical studies can further enhance fracture risk estimation tools with inclusion of BTM together with other independent risk factors. Further data of the relationships between the clinical assays for CTX and PINP as well as physiological and pre-analytical factors contributing to variability in BTM concentrations are required. Incident reporting systems (IRSs) are used in many organisations as tools that promote safety by allowing to collectively learn from incidents. In this paper, we propose a social constructivist approach to learning from incidents, in which the focus is not purely on safety, but on the technology of incident reporting itself. We employ Wiebe Bijker’s work on the Social Construction of Technology to open up the analysis of a specific IRS in use at the Belgian Nuclear Research Center. For this purpose, we carried out 28 interviews with key local actors and collected documents and observation notes. Such social constructivist perspective provides detailed insight into the practices of reporting and the meanings of learning from incidents. Our research shows that various actors within the organisation frame the IRS differently. These framings each have their own implications for the vulnerability of the organisation. [less ▲]
