The objective of this article is to analyze the preparation process of young Moroccan migrants directed towards Italy. My focus is on the personal and collective formulation of their desire to leave and on concomitant action taken to realize these aspirations; highlighting the complexity of the imagination, which migration – and expected return – entails. A second point of attention is the agency exerted by such youth during preparation for departure; even when they have not physically left the country yet. In addition, my observation is focussed on networks emerging as a result of having to deal with state-imposed, migration restrictions, as well as with the politics of humanitarian agencies and NGOs. My discourse argues that these aspiring migrants project themselves into the future and act in accordance with what they long to become. They shape themselves as mobile subjects through a process of self-making to overcome the above-mentioned constraints. [less ▲]

Restoration of calcareous grasslands was promoted as a conservation strategy to reduce the risks imposed by habitat loss and fragmentation. Restoration already provided promising results for several taxa, however some specialist species still fail at colonizing restored habitats. We aimed at explaining this lack of colonization success for three calcareous grasslands specialist species in Southern Belgium: Pulsatilla vulgaris, Trifolium montanum and Veronica prostrata. We studied: (i) Germination in control and outdoor conditions (cold, heat, smoke and litter effects); (ii) In-situ seedling emergence patterns (effects of seed addition and germination microsites availability). The three species were able to germinate in Petri dishes in the absence of treatment. Cold enhanced the germination of V. prostrata. Fire-related treatments (heat shock and smoke exposure) did not enhance germination and were deleterious to V. prostrata. Litter cover improved P. vulgaris emergence in outdoor containers, but had a negative effect on V. prostrata. In the field, V. prostrata did not emerge. T. montanum seedlings were observed in the reference grasslands when seeds were added, but not in the restored grasslands. P. vulgaris emerged in the reference grasslands, and to a lower degree in the restored grasslands. The combination of seed addition and microsites availability for seed germination resulted in enhanced seedling emergence for P. vulgaris. Our results suggest that seed and microsite availability can be limiting factors for site colonization, but the combination of both is likely much more limiting. Lower seedling emergence in restored than in reference grasslands suggests a lower habitat quality in restored grasslands. [less ▲]

The torsional flutter oscillations of a 4:1 rectangular cylinder around its pitching axis are investigated through wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations. The rectangle’s responses to different initial conditions and turbulence excitations at various wind tunnel airspeeds are recorded. Timeresolved Particle Image Velocimetry measurements are taken at two different airspeeds, when the rectangle undergoes Limit Cycle Oscillations. Aeroelastic simulations are carried out using the Discrete Vortex Method and the resulting responses are compared to the experimental measurements. The Common-base Proper Orthogonal Decomposition method is used to analyse and compare the measured and simulated unsteady flow fields around the rectangle. A discussion of the participation of each mode in the different states of the flow-field is presented, at two different amplitudes of oscillation. The Motion Induced Vortex (MIV) is identified as the fundamental cause of the torsional flutter phenomenon and its role over a complete cycle is studied. MIV-induced oscillations can be started either by a suitable initial disturbance or by a second, nearly linear self-excited instability that causes negative aerodynamic damping. The combination of these two instabilities results in a complete description of the torsional flutter of the rectangle. [less ▲]

LSP sneutrino decays into heavy standard model pairs

In bilinear R-parity violation (BRpV), in which the superpotential includes a bilinear term between the lepton doublet and the up-type Higgs superfields, a sneutrino LSP can decay into pairs of heavy standard model states: W's, Z's, tops or Higgs bosons. These finals states can dominate over the traditionally considered bottom pair final state. This would lead to unique and novel supersymmetric signals with each supersymmetric event possibly producing two pairs of these heavy standard model fields. We investigate this possibility and find that the branching ratio into heavier states dominates when the bilinear term is much smaller than the sneutrino vacuum expectation value for a given sneutrino flavor. When BRpV is the only source of neutrino masses these decays can only dominate for one of the sneutrino generations. Relaxing this constraint opens these channels for all three generations. [less ▲]
