As marine fisheries in Senegal are in serious decline due to overexploitation, the management of sustainable fisheries requires effective tactics based on scientific data. In order to characterize the current state of the artisanal fishery of the Kayar Marine Protected Area (MPA), a daily survey of fish landings was carried out between October 2013 and May 2015, and a database was created. Results showed that the landings are largely dominated by pelagic species in terms of weight. In total, 84 taxa were registered, including the species Sardinella aurita, which has been the most landed (30.5%), followed by Trichiurus lepturus (18.9%). These species are mainly captured by means of purse seine. The other types of fishing gear used in the area are the long line and the single line, which target particular species (e.g., Epinephelus aeneus). The temporal evolution of landings shows a period of abundance between May and June, while fishing effort is generally increasing. Regarding the spatial distribution, landings originate primarily from the MPA, where the landing per unit of effort was higher in the Angleterre area compared to other studied areas. These temporal and spatial variations seem to be related to the upwelling intensity which is highly seasonal, habitat features (i.e., presence of an underwater canyon in the MPA), the ecological behaviour of fish species and overexploitation. Our results confirm the need for detailed and extensive population monitoring across fish species. As a result of this study, we hope to provide the first essential information for the integrated management of fisheries in the Kayar MPA and its surrounding area. [less ▲]

Three common non-commercial Tunisian date varieties were treated by two thermal systems, obtaining a liquid fraction which was characterized and its antioxidant capacity determined. The concentration of total phenols in the three varieties (Smeti, Garen Gazel, and Eguwa) was increased by steam explosion treatment up to 5311, 4680, and 3832 mg/kg of fresh dates, and their antioxidant activity up to 62.5, 46.5 and 43.1 mmol Trolox®/kg of fresh date, respectively. Both thermal treatments increased the content of phenolic acids. Additionally, a long scale study was carried out in a pilot plant, with steam treatment at 140 °C and 160 °C for 30 min. The liquid phase was extracted and fractionated chromatographically using adsorbent or ionic resins. The phenolic profiles were determined for each fraction, yielding fractions with interesting antioxidant activities with EC50 values of up to 0.08 mg/L or values of TEAC of 0.67 mmol Trolox®/g of extract. In the last years, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development of methods for controlling the radical polymerization of vinyl monomers and designing a large range of well-defined macromolecular structures with specific properties. Although significant progress has been made, there is still room for improvements especially for the so-called ‘less activated’ monomers (LAMs) like vinyl esters, N-vinylamides, olefins, etc. This presentation aims to describe the potential of the Organometallic-Mediated Radical Polymerization (OMRP) for controlling the polymerization of these challenging monomers. Basic principles of OMRP will be presented as well as cutting edge developments in this field like the precision design of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVAs) or the synthesis of novel alkylcobalt(III) species used as functional OMRP initiator for producing unique well-defined α-functional polymers. In 1976 Larkin and Ovchinnikov [Sov. Phys. JETP 41, 960 (1976)] predicted that vortex matter in superconductors driven by an electrical current can undergo an abrupt dynamic transition from a flux-flow regime to a more dissipative state at suficiently high vortex velocities. Typically this transition manifests itself as a large voltage jump at a particular current density, so-called instability current density J, which is smaller than the depairing current. By tuning the effective pinning strength in Al fi lms, using an artifi cial periodic pinning array of triangular holes, we show that a unique and well defi ned instability current density exists if the pinning is strong, whereas a series of multiple voltage transitions appear in the relatively weaker pinning regime. This behavior is consistent with time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations, where the multiple-step transition can be unambiguously attributed to the progressive development of vortex chains and subsequently phase-slip lines. In addition, we explore experimentally the magnetic braking e ffects, caused by a thick Cu layer deposited on top of the superconductor, on the instabilities and the vortex ratchet effect. [less ▲]

Durante el curso en primer lugar se expusieron las principales teorías feministas y de la sociología de la familia que han estudiado el impacto de la migración femenina en el acceso a la protección social de las mujeres migrantes y de sus familias en el país origen. En segundo lugar, se propuso una perspectiva interseccional- transnacional que permite al investigadora-investigador analizar como las posicionalidades de género, raza, clase, de los migrantes aunado a sus relaciones familiares en el país de origen afectan su acceso a una plataforma de protección social transnacional, formada de recursos formales e informales. La propuesta teórica, fue puesta en ejemplo con el análisis de un estudio de caso de trabajadoras domésticas Colombianas-Peruanas residentes en la ciudad de Bruselas, Bélgica. [less ▲]

Conférence de la SGLg du 7 octobre 2015 Bilan de douze années (2002-2014) de limnologie satellitaire du Tanganyika. Yves CORNET avec la collaboration de N. Poncelet et S. Horion (ULg), P.-D. Abstract : La fin du siècle dernier marque l’avènement d’une nouvelle génération de capteurs satellitaires à basse résolution spatiale tels SeaWiFs, MODIS et MERIS respectivement à bord de GeoEye's OrbView-2 (SeaStar), lancé en 1997, TERRA et AQUA, lancés en 1999 et 2002, et ENVISAT, lancé en 2002. Ils sont spécialement conçus pour l’analyse des processus océanographiques et limnologiques. Dans la gamme des longueurs d’onde du rayonnement visible et proche infra-rouge réfléchi par la colonne d’eau, leur résolution spectrale est adaptée à l’analyse de la couleur des océans. Dans la gamme des longueurs d’onde du rayonnement thermique émis par la surface des plans d’eau, ils permettent le calcul de sa température. L’extraction, à partir des images enregistrées par ces capteurs, des paramètres bio-optiques (concentration en chl-a ou coefficient d’atténuation de la lumière dans l’eau) et de la température de la surface des eaux ne peut cependant être optimisée et validée qu’en exploitant des mesures réalisées in situ ou d’autres produits de télédétection (ArcLake). Nous présenterons, dans un premier temps, les difficultés de cette procédure d’extraction intrinsèques à l’observation des lacs et océans en général et au milieu lacustre des Grands Lac Africain, en particulier. Cela nous permettra de qualifier les produits obtenus (série temporelles d’images couvrant la période 2002-2014) et souligner les risques de leur utilisation dans différentes applications. Parmi ces applications, nous illustrerons notamment l’exploitation de ces séries temporelles pour une meilleure compréhension (quantitative et qualitative) de l’hydrodynamique du lac, de ses relations avec la production primaire et la gestion des pêches et avec l’épidémiologie du choléra réapparu dans les années ‘70 en Afrique de l’Est.
