In this paper, the necessity for treating intra-household correlation is investigated by analyzing two travel behavior indices, i.e. travel time and travel distance, for three important travel motives (commuting, shopping, and leisure). Data stemming from the 2010 Belgian National Household Travel Survey are used in the analysis. Two model approaches that accommodate for intra-household correlation are compared, namely the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) and GEE model approach. Both model approaches show that high levels of intra-household correlation are present, and therefore the use of models that take into account intra-household correlation, is strongly recommend. Results indicate that this requirement is the most urgent for non-commuting trips. Moreover, the results show that GLMM and GEE yield comparable estimates in the case of normally distributed data. Furthermore, evidence was provided that the more the estimates of the intra-household correlation provided by the two approaches differ, the less the homogeneity of the parameters is assured. In this regard, if one has to choose between the GLMM and GEE methodology, especially the negative consequences of choosing an inappropriate covariance model in the case of a GLMM model favor the selection of the GEE methodology. Further research is needed to compare the two approaches in the context of non-normally distributed travel behavior data. [less ▲]

Purpose: Sarcopenia is an age-related muscle condition which is frequently a precursor of frailty, mobility disability and premature death. It has a high prevalence in older populations and presents a considerable social and economic burden. Potential treatments are under development but, as yet, no guidelines support regulatory studies for new drugs to manage sarcopenia. The objective of this position paper is therefore to suggest a set of potential endpoints and target population definitions to stimulate debate and progress within the medico-scientific and regulatory communities. Methods: A multidisciplinary expert working group was hosted by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, which reviewed and discussed the recent literature from a perspective of clinical experience and guideline development. Relevant parallels were drawn from the development of definition of osteoporosis as a disease and clinical assessment of pharmaceutical treatments for that indication. Results A case-finding decision tree is briefly reviewed with a discussion of recent prevalence estimations of different relevant threshold values. The selection criteria for patients in regulatory studies are discussed according to the aims of the investigation (sarcopenia prevention or treatment) and the stage of project development. The possible endpoints of such studies are reviewed and a pleais made for the establishment of a core outcome set to be used in all clinical trials of sarcopenia. Conclusions : The current lack of guidelines for the assessment of new therapeutic treatments for sarcopenia could potentially hinder the delivery of effective medicines to patients at risk. BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is frequent in horses with severe gastrointestinal disorders. Postmortem studies have found fibrin microthrombi in tissues of these horses, but studies relating these histopathological findings with antemortem hemostatic data are lacking. HYPOTHESIS: Antemortem classification of coagulopathy is related to the presence and severity of fibrin deposits observed postmortem in horses with severe gastrointestinal disorders. ANIMALS: Antemortem hemostatic profile data and postmortem tissue samples (kidney, lung, liver) from 48 horses with colic. METHODS: Tissue samples were stained with phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin and immunohistochemical methods for histological examination. A fibrin score (grades 0-4) was assigned for each technique, tissue and horse, as well as the presence or absence of DIC at postmortem examination. D-dimer concentration, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and antithrombin (AT) activity, as well as the clinicopathological evidence of coagulopathy, were determined from plasma samples collected 0-24 hours before death or euthanasia. Histologic and clinicopathologic data from the same horses were compared retrospectively. RESULTS: No association was found between antemortem classification of coagulopathy and postmortem diagnosis of DIC based on tissue fibrin deposition. None of the hemostatic parameters was significantly different between horses with or without postmortem diagnosis of DIC. There was no association between horses with fibrin in tissues or different cut-offs for D-dimer concentration and postmortem evidence of DIC. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Abnormalities of the routine clotting profile, including D-dimer concentration, were not useful in predicting histologic evidence of DIC at necropsy in horses with severe gastrointestinal disorders. In this paper, the effect of traveler's nationality on daily travel time expenditure is assessed using data stemming from the 2010 Belgian national household travel survey. In particular, different (zero-inflated) negative binomial models were estimated to isolate the effect of nationality, after controlling for other contributing factors such as socio-demographics, residential characteristics, transport options and temporal characteristics. The results indicate that, even if one controls for a series of other influencing factors, nationality plays a significant role in differences in travel time expenditure. This finding is especially relevant in the development of policy packages that are targeted to tackle social inequalities. From a methodological perspective, different methodological options, i.e. two weighting schemes and two bootstrap solutions, were presented to provide sufficient support for the conclusions. In order to generalize the results in further studies, an oversampling of travelers with a different nationality is strongly recommended. Future research should focus more on the underlying psychological constructs of why ethnic and cultural differences persist, even if one accounts for other determinants. [less ▲]

This paper considers the general problem of image classification without using any prior knowledge about image classes. We study variants of a method based on supervised learning whose common steps are the extraction of random subwindows described by raw pixel intensity values and the use of ensemble of extremely randomized trees to directly classify images or to learn image features. The influence of method parameters and variants is thoroughly evaluated so as to provide baselines and guidelines for future studies. Detailed results are provided on 80 publicly available datasets that depict very diverse types of images (more than 3800 image classes and over 1.5 million images). [less ▲]

In this chapter, we propose to analyze the development of the external voting issue in the Bolivian political context between 2003 and 2009. Examining the evolution of relations between the Bolivian Government and its diaspora (particularly a er the coming to power of Evo Morales Ayma in 2006), we will demonstrate how the topic has progressively become central within Bolivian politics and how emigrants have played an active part in their own enfranchisement. In particular, we will see how “the process of change” instigated by the Morales government has found an extension among citizens abroad. [less ▲]

This study provides detailed information, based on serial peels, on the anatomy of the primary and secondary xylem, lateral branch formation, and proposed growth pattern of Armoricaphyton Strullu-Derrien et al., an Early Devonian (Pragian) basal euphyllophyte. The centrarch primary xylem strand is circular to oval in cross section and includes P-type tracheids. The pattern of lateral branch departure is described in detail based on serial peels. The secondary xylem, illustrated in transverse, radial and tangential longitudinal sections, includes P-type tracheids with similar pitting in radial and tangential walls. The presence of one-walled spaces interpreted as rays is confirmed. This study also documents the earliest occurrence of secondary xylem at bases of next higher order of branches. A model of growth for this unusual Early Devonian plant is presented, with documented epidogenetic, menetogenetic and possible apoxogenetic phases. The difference in proportion of primary tosecondary xylem is postulated to be a result of this mode of growth. The possible implications of xylem size and organization in the lateral organ in Armoricaphyton relative to the early evolution of the megaphyllous leaf are briefly discussed. [less ▲]

In Belgium, since the 1st of February 2007, Sentence Implementation Courts (SIC) have been responsible for granting early release to prisoners serving a sen- tence of more than three years. Far from the traditional idea of a ritualised justice (Garapon 2001), this court “does not judge” but makes decisions. These decisions are not produced through the syllogistic reasoning of some judges mechanically applying general rules to specific cases (Beccaria 2006). They rather depend on complex organising processes, enacted by various professional groups: SIC mag- istrates, prison governors, prison clerks, Prison Psychosocial Team (PST), and Prison Central Administration (Halliday et al. 2009). Those professionals are pro- ducing and making sense of diverse documents (Freeman 2006). This chapter looks at the process through which judicial decisions are made by the SIC. It aims at accounting for the cooperation between the stakeholders. The formal coordination between the professional groups will be depicted, as well as their concrete practices and interactions. In doing so, we will emphasise the importance of documents as “boundary objects” (Star and Griesemer 1989) supporting professionals’ cooperation. We will also analyse how “sensemaking” (Weick et al. 2005) underlies collective action across time and space along the sen- tence enforcement process. [less ▲]
