Recently, Liu et al. (2015) proposed a method to characterize activity sequences stemming from activity-travel diaries. The framework is structured as follows: from an extracted set of activity sequences, (a) the occurrence probabilities of the different activities are determined as well as their sequential order for aligning the activity sequences. Then, (b) profile Hidden Markov Models (pHMM) are defined based on the previous output. This technique is interesting given the fact that it is also able to include the irregular activities and, as a result, their derived trips. In this context, thinking about integration with an agent-based micro-simulation model requires, as a preliminary step, an uncertainty quantification analysis in order to measure the variability of the outcome. This approach is all the more necessary when agent-based micro-simulation is used to predict mid- and long-term system states. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to gain from experimental tests an insight into the failure mode of slender steel columns subjected to fire. The tests will also be used to validate a numerical model. Design/methodology/approach A series of experimental fire tests were conducted on eight full-scale steel columns made of slender I-shaped Class 4 sections. Six columns were made of welded sections (some prismatic and some tapered members), and two columns were made of hot rolled sections. The nominal length of the columns was 2.7 meters with the whole length being heated. The load was applied at ambient temperature after which the temperature was increased under constant load. The load was applied concentrically on some tests and with an eccentricity in other tests. Heating was applied by electrical resistances enclosed in ceramic pads. Numerical simulations were performed with the software SAFIR® using shell elements. Findings The tests have allowed determining the appropriate method of application of the electrical heating system for obtaining a uniform temperature distribution in the members. Failure of the columns during the tests occurred by combination of local and global buckling. The numerical model reproduced correctly the failure modes as well as the critical temperatures. Originality/value The numerical model that has been validated has been used in subsequent parametric analyses performed to derive design equations to be used in practice. This series of test results can be used by the scientific community to validate their own numerical or analytical models for the fire resistance of slender steel columns. [less ▲]

The aim of this study was to characterize monovarietal virgin olive oils (VOOs) of new high-density planting system of three European cultivars (Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki), recently introduced in eastern Morocco. VOOs’ characterization has been carried out by analyzing several parameters, such as quality indexes, fatty acid contents, minor components, and olive oils’ oxidative stability index (OSI). In this study, we have also conducted a comparison between these monovarietal VOOs and olive oils of autochthones cultivar Picholine marocaine. Significant differences between the analyzed VOOs were highlighted. Koroneiki’s VOO had a high phenols content (493.66 mg/kg) and, consequently, the best oxidative stability (94.83 h); Arbrosana’s VOO was distinguished by its abundance of α-tocopherol (460.07 mg/kg) and by an intermediate OSI (64.83 h). In addition, results showed, firstly, that in all the analyzed oils decarboxymethyl ligstroside aglycone and decarboxymethyl oleuropein aglycone were the main phenolic compounds, and, secondly, that VOOs of Koroneiki and Arbosana seem to have similar profiles, with a high content of natural antioxidants and a high oleic/linoleic ratio, thus boasting a better shelf life. Only very few long-term records of formaldehyde (HCHO) exist that are suitable for trend analysis. Furthermore, many uncertainties remain as to its diurnal cycle, representing a large short-term variability superimposed on seasonal and inter-annual variations that should be accounted for when comparing ground-based observations to e.g., model results. In this study, we derive a multi-decadal time series (January 1988 – June 2015) of HCHO total columns from ground-based high-resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) solar spectra recorded at the high-altitude station of Jungfraujoch (Swiss Alps, 46.5° N, 8.0° E, 3580 m a.s.l.), allowing for the characterization of the mid-latitudinal atmosphere for background conditions. First we investigate the HCHO diurnal variation, peaking around noontime and mainly driven by the intra-day insolation modulation and methane (CH4) oxidation. We also characterize quantitatively the diurnal cycles by adjusting a parametric model to the observations, which links the daytime to the HCHO columns according to the monthly intra-day regimes. It is then employed to scale all the individual FTIR measurements on a given daytime in order to remove the effect of the intra-day modulation for improving the trend determination and the comparison with HCHO columns simulated by the state-of-the-art chemical transport model GEOS-Chem v9-02. Such a parametric model will be useful to scale the Jungfraujoch HCHO columns on satellite overpass times in the framework of future calibration/validation efforts of space borne sensors. GEOS-Chem sensitivity tests suggest then that the seasonal and inter-annual HCHO column variations above Jungfraujoch are predominantly led by the atmospheric CH4 oxidation, with a maximum contribution of 25 % from the anthropogenic non-methane volatile organic compound precursors during wintertime. Finally, trend analysis of the so-scaled 27-year FTIR time series reveals a long-term evolution of the HCHO columns in the remote troposphere to be related with the atmospheric CH4 fluctuations and the short-term OH variability: +2.9 %/yr between 1988 and 1995, -3.7 %/yr over 1996-2002 and +0.8/% yr from 2003 onwards. Both laboratory and field experiments were carried out in order to define suitable configuration ranges for the gas sampling systems (GSSs) of infrared gas analyzers (IRGAs) used in eddy covariance measurements. In the laboratory, an original dynamic calibration bench was developed in order to test the frequency attenuation and pressure drop generated by filters. In the field, three IRGAs of the same type equipped with different filters or different rain caps were installed and run and the real frequency response of the complete setup was tested. The main results are as follows. – Filters may have a strong impact on the pressure drop in the GSS and this impact increases with flow rate. – Conversely, no impact of the tested filters on cut-off frequency was found, GSSs with and without filters presenting similar cut-off frequencies. – The main limiting factor of cut-off frequency in the field was found to be the rain cap design. In addition, the impact of this design on pressure drop was also found to be noteworthy. [less ▲]

The recent paper of Dr Jong-Myon Bae about Quaternary Prevention and Public Health in your journal has attracted my interest. The spread of this concept is beyond all expectation and I am quite happy it contributes to the analytic thinking of complexity of health care. The particular application of the quaternary prevention (P4) concept is absolutely brilliant. Nevertheless I would propose some slight modifications to the table 1 edited by the author which I have taken the liberty to reproduce here with the due authorization of Dr Bae and after several mail exchanges with him. During the last decade, the initial cancer cell-centered view of tumors has greatly evolved to an integrated vision of tumor biology taking into account the key contribution of the TME. Obviously, the different compartments of TME are closely related and contribute not only to tumor progression, but also to its response to treatments. Importantly, the TME evolves over time during the different steps of cancer development and is also affected by different therapeutic modalities. Although, improvements have been achieved regarding RT delivery to the primary tumor, ionizing radiation also target nontumor cells that influence tumor growth and metastatic dissemination. Different approaches have been proposed to overcome the radioresistance of cancer cells. The TME-mediated radioresistance is now the object of researches, which has been elegantly reviewed recently by Barker et al. (2015) and severalarticles pointed out the importance of treatments that modify the TME and likely radiosensitize tumor (Ansiaux et al., 2005; Crokart et al., 2005b; Frérart et al., 2008). However, the impact of anti-cancer treatments on the TME and consequently on the tumor phenotype, response to treatment and metastases, is often neglected. Here we pointed out the impact of RT on the TME. Recent findings emphasize the interest to optimize RT (i.e., dose per fraction) and timing of surgery (Leroi et al., 2015; Surace et al., 2015) in order to prevent metastatic spreading. The future challenge in RT will be to define the most appropriate combinations between RT, and other therapeutic modalities with the optimal sequence and timing of treatments. In this context, investigation of the TME-related acquired resistance will be essential and will provide important innovative data. [less ▲]
