Abstract: Since the Treaty of London in 1839, pre-war planning theories in Belgium oscillated between two positions: on one hand secure and defend which border would be endangered, on the other hand constitute in Antwerp a powerful national sanctuary. This concentration of most of the available military means in Antwerp was far more appropriate in the event of a French invasion. But this perspective decreased after the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, while the possibility of a trespassing by the two belligerents became greater and greater. The fortifications of Namur and Liège were voted by the Chambers in 1887 as a deterrent to both France and Germany. Nevertheless, without totally putting aside the defence of the Belgian southwestern border, high-ranking officers seemed to fear more and more a violation of the eastern border. Due to the completion of fortifications on the Meuse in 1892, German columns were supposed to move forward south of the river, through the Belgian Ardennes. On the eve of the Great War, King Albert I would have preferred to concentrate the army on the Meuse but his Chief of Staff selected a central position in order to maintain and secure his line of communication with Antwerp. The lack of a determined and “standardized” doctrine at the highest level of the army led to a “mixed” or compromise plan adopted in a hurry during the first days of mobilization in August 1914. This study investigated whether associated meiobenthic communities, especially harpacticoid copepods differed, amongst habitats. Five pre-defined habitats within and next to the Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadow were sampled: living seagrass canopy leaves (LL), small (SMF) and large (LMF) macrophytodetritus fragments accumulations and sand, bare (BS) and covered (CS). The highest meiofauna abundances were recorded in the BS for the core sampled habitats (BS, CS, SMF and LMF) and in the LMF for seagrass material habitats (SMF, LMF and LL). Harpacticoid copepods were the most abundant taxon in all habitats. The assemblage composition at copepod family level showed two distinct habitats clusters: a leaf (LMF and LL) and a sediment cluster (BS, CS and SMF). Subsequently, stable isotope analyses were conducted to analyse the relationship between copepods and their potential food sources in seagrass material habitats. Based on δ13C isotopic analyses and SIAR mixing model, harpacticoid copepods relied for 70% on epiphytes and for 30% on P. oceanica leaf material in the LMF and LL habitats. [less ▲]

A previously undocumented marine vertebrate fauna comprising ichthyosaur, plesiosaur, marine crocodilian and fish remains from the Toarcian-Aalenian succession at Lafarge quarry, southern Beaujolais, Rhône, France is described on the basis of both historical collections and new discoveries. The taxonomic composition of the Lafarge quarry marine vertebrate assemblage highlights its cosmopolitan nature and strong relationships with taxa known from elsewhere in Europe. Several groups are recorded for the first time in the Toarcian-Aalenian succession of France, implying new palaeobiogeographic interpretations, and prompting discussion of marine amniote diversity during this interval. Agricultural management practices influence soil structure, but the characterization of these modifications and consequences are still not completely understood. In this study, we aim at improving water retention and hydraulic conductivity curves using both classical soil techniques and X-ray microtomography in the context of tillage simplification. We show a good match for retention and conductivity functions between macroscopic measurements and microtomographic information. Microtomography highlights the presence of a secondary pore system. Analysis of structural parameters for these pores appears to be significant and offers additional clues for objects differentiation. We show that relatively fast scans supply not only good results, but also enhance near saturation characterization, making microtomography a highly competitive instrument for routine soil characterization.
