Despite the fact that Kees Van Dongen was one of the most famous painter of the 20th century, only little information about his palette and his technique is available. To contribute to the characterization of Van Dongen's painting materials, La Violoniste, painted by the artist around 1923, has been analyzed by using three complementary techniques: macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF), Raman spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging. The elemental repartition given by MA-XRF and the results obtained thanks to Raman spectroscopy help us to complete the identification of pigments contained in La Violoniste (lead white, iron oxides, cadmium yellow, vermilion, Prussian blue, titanium white, ultramarine, a chromium pigment and carbon black) while the results obtained via hyperspectral imaging reveal a hidden woman portrait. Besides the fact that Kees Van Dongen was particularly renowned for his female portraits, this hidden composition presents obvious stylistic similarities with the well-known portraits produced by the artist during his Parisian stay (starting from 1899). Thanks to Raman spectroscopy, visual examination and MA-XRF, we show that the original background contains ultramarine, the hidden portrait's clothes are probably made of the same colour as the present violinist's dress and her carnation contains zinc, contrary to the violinist's flesh which is mainly made of lead white. The study proposes a comparative analysis of the French-language and Flemish/Dutch versions of the international ballad deriving from the Danish 'Moderen under Mulde' (Dgf 89), and on this basis identifies three French-language texts recorded in North-east France and Wallonia yet showing closer affinities to the neighbouring Flemish tradition. In the light of both textual traditions, their unilateral adoption of Flemish motifs and their enhancing effect suggests deliberate selection rather than mere geographical proximity or bilingualism as explanation for their hybridization. This article offers an interpretation of the scene depicted on the body of an Apulian red-figured oinochoe, assigned to the Darius Painter, now kept in the storage of the Museo Civico of Foggia. This interpretation is based on the analysis of the iconographic language of the Apulian imagery as well as on the connexion in series of this scene with those appearing on contemporary vases produced in the same cultural community. Belgium's public diplomacy cannot be understood without the frame of the political divide characterizing federalism in the country. Unlike others federal states whose self-governing components adopt policies that converge at the international level, Flanders and Wallonia – the Dutch- and French-speaking communities of Belgium – seem not to act coordinately on this matter. Culture is the principal field where the two communities adopt very different approaches and end up competing for resources and international visibility. Flanders, in particular, support self-representation strategies that produce and circulate images of a singular and homogeneous “Flemish nation”. The action of its cultural institutions seems to focus on an autonomous nation building project rather than situating the community in the larger national – Belgian – dimension. Language is the cultural trait lying at the basis of this conflict known as “community cleavage” that affects both the public and the political sphere. As a verbal art, popular music is one of the most simbolically relevant practices that participate to cultural diplomacy in this context. Starting from ethnographic analysis of Flemish public and private cultural institutions, this paper aims to describe the ways Flemish music policy in international situations is mutually connected to political claims for autonomy and independence at the national level. The research questions are as follows: 1) how does Belgian federalism condition cultural/music diplomacy in Flanders? 2) How does cultural/music diplomacy contribute to the political struggle of Flemish independentism?
