Based on ethnographic research among the ex-Gécamines workers of Panda (Likasi, DR Congo), this article studies the dynamics of the spousal relationship in a post-industrial context that has been long characterized by paternalism. The results of this research suggest that, though men and women living in this mining community talk about their spousal relationships by invoking the ideal of Christian marriage promoted during the colonial period, in practice such relationships faced important changes following Congolese independence in 1960. The nationalization and subsequent dramatic decline of Gécamines caused changes which directly affected three central dimensions of the colonial family model, namely monogamy, the ideal of domesticity, and male authority. If men and women continue to reference this model, it is because, in times of growing poverty, it allows spouses to remind one other of their respective duties as docile housewives and responsible husbands, and to command respect as virtuous Christian families in the local community. [less ▲]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of selenium (Se) enrichment of cereals on Belgian Blue bulls performance, on meat quality and chemical composition. Twenty three bulls were used in the present study. Twelve bulls were offered a control diet containing Se at a basal concentration of 58 µg kg-1 of dry matter (DM) and the other 11 bulls given a diet containing 173 µg kg-1DM of Se by means of Se enriched spelt and barley. The Se enrichment of the diet did not affect either the growth performance, the slaughter data or meat quality (p>0.05). There were no effects of Se on tenderness, oxydative rancidity and water losses. However, there were some effects of Se enrichment on the meat chemical composition. The ether extract was decreased from 2.1 to 1.7% DM (p<0.05). There were also significant Se enrichment (p < 0.001) in Longissimus thoracis muscle (177 vs 477 ng g1-DM) and organs: liver (474 vs 1126 ng g1-DM) and kidney (4956 vs 5655 ng g1-DM), Under such condition, the human consumption of a piece of such meat or liver can cover a large part of the recommended daily Se intake estimated between 30 to 57%. The objective of this study is to present a theoretical paper about a clinical issue. Our aim is to propose some clinical and semiological considerations for a psychopathological conception of psychopathy. We will discuss several major theoretical works dedicated to this nosographic entity (mainly those of Schneider, Cleckley and Hare). We will also examine a significant issue raised by Cooke et al., namely whether psychopathic functioning is consistently related to antisocial behavior. This theoretical essay is informed by clinical situations (involving psychopaths who were interviewed in prison or in forensic centers). The method applied a phenomenological psychopathology analysis to the clinical material. We first compare Binswanger’s conception of mania with psychopathic functioning. Patients’ behavior is similar but there is a difference related to the dialectic between the ego and the alter ego. A patient with mania has a fundamental crisis of the ego, which a psychopath does not have. A second finding of our investigations concerns emotions and the adaptive dimension of the psychopathic disorder. An epistemological discussion of the concept of emotions reveals that psychopaths are competent in the management of emotional stimuli, which confers a psychological advantage upon them. [less ▲]

This study examines the share and allocation of household expenditure in health financing, as presented by the National Health Account figures. These figures are based on a national survey carried out in 2010 among 11,000 households, 2,200 people living with HIV/AIDS, 183 institutions, 42 mutual funds, 18 companies and using the balance sheets of 1,300 companies. Total household health expenditure per capita per year amounted to U.S. $ 4.50. Routine health expenditure is covered by the households (40%) and international cooperation (45%) through direct payment without cost sharing (93.7%). A hospital stay is warranted in case of nutritional deficiencies (34%), malaria (12%) and mental disorders (10%). 82% of outpatient care is related to malaria (71%) and mental disorders (12.5 %). In conclusion, the observation that 71.58% of hospitals expenditure, 96.49% of ambulatory care centres expenditure, 98.48% of medical and diagnosis laboratories expenditure, 72.42% of pharmacies expenditures come from households’ out of pocket expenses calls for the establishment of solidarity mechanisms in the health sector. Outpatient malaria care consumes as much as 71% of household expenditure, and we therefore need to strengthen prevention, treatment and focus on monitoring progress. The fact that nutritional deficiencies are the leading cause of people seeking hospital care suggests that efforts are needed to improve their living conditions of households. Mental disorders are the third leading cause of hospital recourse and this pathology should therefore be included in the minimum and supplementary package of activities. [less ▲]

This text focuses on how teachers and other institutional actors (such as headmasters, psychologists and social workers) offer guidance to pupils in secondary schools. It stresses the epistemological and empirical challenges inherent in a study of decisionmaking in school guidance as used by teachers, based on field theory. The text begins with a presentation of several sociological studies of how teachers construct their judgments about pupils. It emphasizes the strength of the concept of field as a key to understanding the role played by teachers in the formal process of educational (school) guidance, specifically in the case of the French "Grandes Ecoles". This section goes on to show that, with the weakening of the autonomy of (the) educational institutions, (the) French sociology of education moved away from (the) Bourdieu’s perspective, (and) to focus(ed) on the moral pluralism inherent in education and the ethical tensions that institutional actors face. The second part of the text discusses the findings of socioanthropological fieldwork undertaken in secondary schools in the French Community of Belgium. This section argues that the dynamics of judgments made by teachers today canbest be understood through their structural linkages with the structure of the field of secondary education. [less ▲]

In the last three decades, the development of the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has been increasing in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), bringing more and more urban families into this flourishing business sector, and among them, children. At first glance, one could see children in the mining sector mainly as victims entangled in the flows of raw materials of unbridled capitalism. But this paper aims to look at the often unconceivable, and as a result neglected, social agency of children even when they are involved in stigmatized and prohibited types of child labour. To do so, it relies on the results of a socio-anthropological collective research project on children’s mining activities which was carried out in a small locality called La Ruashi in the city of Lubumbashi (Province of Katanga). The article aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of what is often normatively only labelled as ‘child labour’ by looking at different spheres of social relations within which children are embedded. Examining the set of social interactions that children have with their families, the broader community and their ‘peers’, several ‘family portraits’ are offered, highlighting a heterogeneity of social interpretations regarding this ‘new’ form of child work. It will be shown that for families from middle-class background, this kind of work is often socially disruptive, at the forefront of inter-generational conflict. As for families from lower classes, social changes induced by children’s mining activities are often better incorporated into the family habitus. Common social changes encountered in all families irrespective of class belonging will also be portrayed, showing the transversal societal impact these ‘new’ forms of child economic activities can provoke at a micro level.
