Blâmée par Jules Michelet, en raison d'un goût que l'historien du XIXe siècle estime trop prononcé pour les intrigues, Louise de Savoie (1476-1531) est sans conteste l'une des personnalités les plus fascinantes de la première Modernité européenne. Comtesse puis duchesse d'Angoulême, Louise n'est pas seulement la mère de deux illustres enfants, Marguerite et François, futur François Ier. Elle se charge de leur éducation ; une fois son fils devenu le roi de France, elle devient un conseiller des plus influents, avant d'assurer, à deux reprises, la régence du royaume. Amatrice d'art et bibliophile avertie, son action concerne encore la musique, la littérature et l'architecture. Les textes rassemblés dans cet ouvrage - issu d'un colloque tenu, en décembre 2010, à Romorantin-Lanthenay, où Louise possédait le château et des terres sur lesquelles Léonard de Vinci avait projeté d'édifier une ville nouvelle pour la cour - ambitionnent de passer en revue tant les aspects biographiques du personnage, que son action dans le champ politique, religieux et culturel. Recent fieldwork has uncovered three new localities from the Lower Devonian of Mezquita de Loscos (Teruel Province, Spain) with further plant mega-fossils and the first record of micro-fossils. Such plant remains have been interpreted as belonging to a basal euphyllophyte, Taeniocrada-like stems, Hostinella genus and paired sporangia. Fourteen spore taxa were recovered, including Ambitisporites, Aneurospora, Brochotriletes, Chelinospora, Emphanisporites, Gneudnaspora and Retusotriletres, among others. New evidence confirms a Lochkovian age for this outcrop and suggests that the plant diversity was more complex than originally documented. © 2014 © 2014 Taylor & Francis. [less ▲]

In this paper, we show that the Triassic fossil record reflects just two great depletions of conodont diversity before the Rhaetian, which occurred in the Smithian (Olenekian, Early Triassic) and in the Julian (Carnian, Late Triassic). By exploring this context, our results highlighted that they respond to different origination-extinction dynamics. Thus, while the Smithian diversity depletion can be interpreted as a consequence of elevated extinction, the Julian diversity depletion was triggered by fluctuations in origination regime. This evidence suggests that, despite the role of extinction on diversity losses, conodonts suffered crucial changes on the origination regimes during the Late Triassic which triggered these events. Notwithstanding, our results indicate that the end-Triassic diversity depletion of conodonts was produced by background extinction levels in a context of lower origination. This suggests that several biological factors, rather than a unique, environmental and/or cyclic cause, could have influenced the evolutionary history of conodonts during the Triassic. © 2014 © 2014 Taylor & Francis. Jatropha curcas oil has an insecticidal activity harnessed by the farmers in Niger. In this study, we compared the insecticidal activity of two batches of oil conserved during 70 days, one exposed to light and the other kept in the dark. The insecticidal efficacy was evaluated in a field with three concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) trial on the main pests of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) and in a laboratory test on Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybon (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) with different concentrations of crude oil (50; 100; 150 and 200 µl). No difference in insecticidal effect was found between the two modes of oil conservation, both in the laboratory and in the field. In the field, regardless of the mode of conservation, the concentrations of 10% of J. curcas oil enables a reduction of over than 80% of thrips, aphids, and bugs compared to the control. Its increased seeds yield more than 50%. The concentration of 15% gives an insecticidal effect comparable to that of the reference treatment (deltaméthrine) but induces phytotoxicity symptoms on the leaves of Cowpea. [less ▲]

We revise the bound from the supernova SN1987A on the coupling of ultralight axion-like particles (ALPs) to photons. In a core-collapse supernova, ALPs would be emitted via the Primakoff process, and eventually convert into gamma rays in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. The lack of a gamma-ray signal in the GRS instrument of the SMM satellite in coincidence with the observation of the neutrinos emitted from SN1987A therefore provides a strong bound on their coupling to photons. Due to the large uncertainty associated with the current bound, we revise this argument, based on state-of-the-art physical inputs both for the supernova models and for the Milky-Way magnetic field. Furthermore, we provide major amendments, such as the consistent treatment of nucleon-degeneracy effects and of the reduction of the nuclear masses in the hot and dense nuclear medium of the supernova. With these improvements, we obtain a new upper limit on the photon-ALP coupling: g_{a\gamma} < 5.3 x 10^{-12} GeV^{-1}, for m_a < 4.4 x 10^{-10} eV, and we also give its dependence at larger ALP masses. Moreover, we discuss how much the Fermi-LAT satellite experiment could improve this bound, should a close-enough supernova explode in the near future. [less ▲]

Acute cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) corresponds to an association of acute heart failure and a worsening of renal function. The detection of acute kidney injury (AKI) unfortunately occurs at a late stage of CRS, leading to an increased mortality of the patients. In this review, we described the pathophysiology of CRS and discussed the potential interest of biochemical biomarkers (namely creatinine, cystatin C, NGAL, KIM-1, fatty acid binding protein, Nacetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and IL-18) that could potentially help to detect AKI earlier and thus reduce the morbi-mortality of the patients suffering from CRS. Background: Burn patients are at risk of vitamin D (VD) deficiency and may benefit from its pleiotropic effects as soon as acute phase. Aim of this observational study was to assess effects of a cholecalciferol (VD3) bolus on VD status in adult burn patients (Group B, GB) after admission, compared to healthy subjects (Group H, GH). Methods: Both groups received an oral dose of 100,000 IU VD3. Blood samples were collected before (D0) and 7 days (D7) after bolus to measure 250H-D, 1,25(OH)2-D, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Albumin (ALB) and VD binding protein (DBP) were measured and used to calculate free 25OH-D level. Data were expressed as median (min–max) or proportions. Results: A total of 49 subjects were included: 29 in GH and 20 in GB. At D0, prevalence of VD deficiency was higher in GB: 25OH-D was 21.5 (10.1–46.3) ng/ml in GH vs 11 (1.8–31.4) ng/ml in GB. DBP and ALB were lower in GB. At D7, DBP was stable in both groups while ALB decreased in GB. 25OH-D increased by 66.6 (13.5–260.3)% in GH. In GB, changes in 25OH-D extended from 36.7% to 333.3% with a median increase of 33.1%. Similar changes were observed in each group for free 25OH-D. High FGF23 levels were observed in GB. Conclusions: This study highlighted the differences in VD status and in response to a high dose VD3 in burn patients when compared to healthy patients. Pitfalls in VD status assessment are numerous during acute burn care: 25OH-D measurement needs cautious interpretation and interest of free 25OH-D is still questionable. They should not prevent burn patients to receive VD supplements during acute care. Higher doses than general recommendations should probably be considered. [less ▲]

We revisit the limit on very light axion-like particles (ALPs) from the absence of gamma rays coincidental with the neutrino burst from SN1987A. We use updated supernova simulations, modern models for the magnetic field inside the Galaxy, and a Primakoff cross section which takes into account proton-degeneracy and mass-reduction effects. We finally give an updated exclusion plot for the electromagnetic coupling of sub-eV ALPs, comparing our new bound with other limits as well as with future ALP searches. [less ▲]

The yellowtail clownfish Amphiprion clarkii is able to close its mouth very quickly by means of the cerato-mandibular (c-md) ligament, a synapomorphic trait of Pomacentridae joining the hyoid bar to the medial part of the lower jaw. This fast closure induces tooth collision, thus producing sounds that the clownfish uses during agonistic behaviors. To investigate whether this rapid jaw movement is also used during feeding, we analyzed the kinematics of sound production and feeding. Sound production, feeding on live planktonic prey, and feeding on food attached to tweezers were filmed with a high-speed camera. Three kinds of kinematic patterns were detected and were associated with the two different types of food presented: one performed to catch planktonic prey (PP), and two (called B-1 and B-2) to bite attached food items. The kinematic pattern of B-2 is similar to that observed during sound production (SP) and the transection of the c-md ligament highlights that sound production and biting-2 motions are dependent on this morphological trait. Our data show that the c-md ligament in addition to its role in sound production allows duplication of the mouth closing mechanism during feeding. This highlights the key role played by the c-md ligament in sound production and feeding on attached prey. [less ▲]

Objective: Based on the case study of Jeanne, the objective of this article is to study patterns of anorexic people’s specific being-in-the-world. We seek to identify the core vulnerability features of anorexic existence, beyond the dimension of feeding alone. The identification of a psychopathological structure will result in a better understanding of Jeanne’s clinical situation and will help to formulate psychotherapeutic and prophylactic recommendations. Method: A phenomenological and ethological approach allows us to see past the strictly medical symptoms (eating disorder). The evolutionary perspective highlights the adaptive dimension of this disorder (e.g., in extreme situations such as famine). Specifically, Demaret’s ethological hypothesis identifies altruism (feeding altruism and generalized altruism) as the core feature of anorexic conduct. Phenomenological reflection (phenomenological psychopathology and phenomenological philosophy) appears to complement the ethological approach. Phenomenology distinguishes two kinds of bodies: the Leib (emotional, subjective and experienced in the first person) and the Körper (devitalized, objective and experienced in the second person). Merleau-Ponty’s works highlight the difference between the touching body and the touched body. These proposals show the problematic of the other in body configuration. It is in precisely this connection that anorexic existence is specific. Sartre’s phenomenology and the lived-body-for-others is the final step of our reasoning to arrive at a configuration of intersubjectivity. Results: The analysis of Jeanne’s case, combined with ethological and phenomenological perspectives, demonstrates that the real psychopathological structure of anorexic subjectivity rests on specific interaction modes. The notions of altruism, lived-body-for-others, and intersubjectivity highlight an emotional existence including shame in the eyes of others, and especially an imbalance between self-preservation and care for others. Conclusions: All our thinking suggests that so-called “denial” is a psychological mechanism that should be reconsidered. Denial is not a mechanism of anorexic subjects alone, but is also a process encountered both in the patient’s family and in the therapeutic environment. Anorexic denial is based on anosognosia and the refusal to see one’s own thinness, while other people’s denial constitutes a widespread inability to perceive the altruism and intersubjective problematic on which the existence of an anorexic subject fundamentally depends. Fossils of Mesozoic vertebrates are rare in Scotland, particularly specimens of marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs. We describe a suite of ichthyosaur fossils from the Early to Middle Jurassic of Skye, which to our knowledge are the first ichthyosaurs from Scotland to be described and figured in detail. These fossils span approximately 30 million years, from the Sinemurian to the Bathonian, and indicate that ichthyosaurs were a major component of Scottish marine faunas during this time. The specimens include isolated teeth that could represent the most northerly known occurrences of the widespread Sinemurian species Ichthyosaurus communis, a characteristic component of the famous Lyme Regis faunas of England, suggesting that such faunas were also present in Scotland during the Early Jurassic. An associated humerus and vertebrae from Toarcian–Bajocian-aged deposits are named as a new genus and species of basal neoichthyosaurian, Dearcmhara shawcrossi. The taxonomic affinities of this taxon, which comes from a critical but poorly sampled interval in the fossil record, suggest that non-ophthalmosaurid neoichthyosaurians dominated European assemblages around the Early–Middle Jurassic boundary, and were later replaced by ophthalmosaurids, whose radiation likely took place outside Europe. Many of these specimens were collected by amateurs and donated to museum collections, a co-operative relationship essential to the preservation of Scotland’s fossil heritage. [less ▲]

Anatomical, systematic, and paleobiogeographical data on the Devonian antiarchs from Belgium are reviewed, updated and completed thanks to new data from the field and re-examination of paleontological collections. The material of Bothriolepis lohesti Leriche, 1931 is enhanced and the species better described. An undetermined species of Bothriolepis is recorded from the Famennian of Modave (Liège Province), one species of Asterolepis redescribed from the Givetian of Hingeon and another one described from the Givetian of Mazy (Namur Province). Grossilepis rikiki sp. nov. is recorded from the Famennian tetrapod-bearing locality of Strud (Namur Province) and from the Famennian of Moresnet (Liège Province). It is the first occurrence of Grossilepis after the Frasnian and on the central southern coast of the Euramerican continent. Its occurrence in the Famennian of Belgium may be the result of a late arrival from the Moscow Platform and the Baltic Depression, where the genus is known from Frasnian deposits. Remigolepis durnalense sp. nov. is described from the Famennian of Spontin near Durnal (Namur Province). Except for the doubtful occurrence of Remigolepis sp. in Scotland, this is the first record of this genus in Western Europe. Its occurrence in Belgium reinforces the strong faunal affinities between Belgium and East Greenland and the hypothesis of a hydrographical link between the two areas during the Late Devonian. La crise généralisée qui, depuis quelques années, a affaibli les économies de nombre d’états, a eu des conséquences sur la typologie des migrations internationales : les trajectoires, les projets, les destinations, les départs se sont modifiés en fonction de nouveaux facteurs auxquels les individus et les groupes étaient confrontés . A côté de ces macro-dynamiques globales, la crise a également engendré des changements dans la vie quotidienne des migrants lorsqu’ils étaient déjà partis et qu’ils s’étaient déjà installés ailleurs. Dans ce cadre, ma contribution vise à analyser les pratiques d’approvisionnement alimentaire d’un groupe de migrantes marocaines en Italie mettant en place des stratégies pour faire face aux conséquences concrètes de la crise économique (notamment la diminution de leur pouvoir d’achat en conséquence de leur précarité professionnelle). Au travers de plusieurs déplacements dans la ville où elles habitaient et de la mobilisation des réseaux familiaux alimentant des circuits informels d’échange de biens, ces femmes satisfaisaient leurs différentes exigences – parmi lesquelles le désir de performer des préparations propres à leur mémoire incorporée – tout en répondant aux contraintes économiques déterminées par la crise. Je vais ainsi démontrer qu’en dépit des difficultés rencontrées, ces femmes arrivaient à exercer une agency dans le nouvel espace vécu et à se positionner de façon active au travers de leurs choix et conduites quotidiennes. In this study, we report the synthesis of a nanoscaled drug delivery system, which is composed of a gold nanorod-like core and a mesoporous silica shell (GNR@MSNP) and partially uploaded with phase-changing molecules (1-tetradecanol, TD, Tm 39 degrees C) as gatekeepers, as well as its ability to regulate the release of doxorubicin (DOX). Indeed, a nearly zero premature release is evidenced at physiological temperature (37 degrees C), whereas the DOX release is efficiently achieved at higher temperature not only upon external heating, but also via internal heating generated by the GNR core under near infrared irradiation. When tagged with folate moieties, GNR@MSNPs target specifically to KB cells, which are known to overexpress the folate receptors. Such a precise control over drug release, combining with the photothermal effect of GNR cores, provides promising opportunity for localized synergistic photothermal ablation and chemotherapy. Moreover, the performance in killing the targeted cancer cells is more efficient compared with the single phototherapeutic modality of GNR@MSNPs. This versatile combination of local heating, phototherapeutics, chemotherapeutics and gating components opens up the possibilities for designing multifunctional drug delivery systems. [less ▲]
