[less ▲]

This conference explores the way in which Belgian law deals with situations where labour law engages with the right to freedom of religion and belief and the right not to be discriminated on grounds of religion. It starts with the Belgian regime of religious freedom, protection against discrimination and valid reasons for termination of employment. It then considers specific areas of those regimes in Belgian labour relations, such as the work schedule accommodation, the refusal to perform work, clothing and religious symbols in the workplace, and the work in an ethos organization. It relates mainly to Belgian case law but also to the case law of the European courts [less ▲]

A performant method for the simultaneous quantification of daidzein, genistein, formononetin and biochanin A in forages using an UPLC®-MS/MS was developed and fully validated. The ultrasound-assisted extraction and enzymatic hydrolysis used in the sample preparation step were optimized using the Box-Behnken experimental design. The optimal extraction conditions used for a representative mix of forage plants were 80°C, 10 min and 55% methanol, and for hydrolysis they were 20°C, 18 h and pH=6. The chromatographic separation was achieved using an Acquity® UPLC® HSS T3 column, with a water/methanol linear gradient containing 0.01% of formic acid at a 0.55 mL min-1 flow rate. The four isoflavones were detected by ESI mass spectrometry in positive ion MRM mode. The method allows high throughput analyses of samples and showed an adequate linear regression model for all isoflavones over a range from 5 to 125 ng mL-1. There was good intra- and inter-day precision (≤ 8.2% and ≤ 7.6%) and accuracy (≤ 11.4% and ≤ 7.1%). The recovery rates were in an acceptable range of 70-120%, except for biochanin A, where the rate was about 50%. Good method repeatability was also observed, and there was no matrix effect or carry-over problem. The sample extracts were stable for at least 6 days of storage at -21°C and 6°C. The method proved to be sensitive, precise and accurate for discriminating a wide variety of forages likely to be grazed by ruminants according to their isoflavone content and to observe the impact storage process on isoflavone content in forages. We consider the multi-trip vehicle routing problem, in which each vehicle can perform several routes during the same working shift to serve a set of customers. The problem arises when customers are close to each other or when their demands are large. A common approach consists of solving this problem by combining vehicle routing heuristics with bin packing routines in order to assign routes to vehicles. We compare this approach with a heuristic that makes use of specific operators designed to tackle the routing and the assignment aspects of the problem simultaneously. Two large neighborhood search heuristics are proposed to perform the comparison. We provide insights into the configuration of the proposed algorithms by analyzing the behavior of several of their components. In particular, we question the impact of the roulette wheel mechanism. We also observe that guiding the search with an objective function designed for the multi-trip case is crucial even when exploring the solution space of the vehicle routing problem. We provide several best known solutions for benchmark instances. [less ▲]

The sheepshead minnow Cyprinodon variegatus has become a favoured model for laboratory studies because of their small size, rapid development, and tolerance of laboratory conditions. Here, we analyse sheepshead minnow post-embryonic development with the goal of providing a generally useful method for staging fish after embryogenesis. Groups of three females and two males were placed in breeding chambers designed for this experiment. More than 100 eggs were collected and maintained in seawater. Embryos were selected under a dissection microscope and placed in incubation dishes (50 per dish) at 26 °C. On day six, embryos hatched and larvae were transferred to 1 L beakers. To define a simplified normalization table for sheepshead minnow development, we measured each fish for its standard length and examined the fish for four externally evident traits: pigmentation pattern, caudal fin morphology, anal fin morphology, and dorsal fin morphology. The four traits were chosen, because they are easily visualized with standard laboratory equipment such as the stereomicroscope and camera. We have provided criteria for staging sheepshead minnows in studies of post-embryonic development. Our data suggest that dorsal and anal fin morphology may serve as a useful phenotype for defining metamorphic climax stages throughout post-embryonic development in C. variegatus. The staging systems we propose should facilitate detailed anatomical and developmental analyses in relation to ecotoxicological studies on potential disruption of the thyroid axis by xenobiotics and endocrine-disrupting compounds. [less ▲]
