Bernard Bolzano notoriously rejected Immanuel Kant’s claim that arithmetic and geometry were grounded on synthetic a priori judgements based on pure intuition. According to Bolzano, only analysis of concepts could ground the generality of mathematical statements and proofs; such a stand would later lead to logicism (from Frege to Carnap). Far from going in this way, however, Charles Sanders Peirce, who was one of the fathers of formal logic but also a great admirer of Kant, provided semiotic reasons to believe that diagrams do have a general meaning and that they can provide a knowledge which is both general and “ampliative”. Unlike mere logical analysis, diagrams (the analogon of Kant’s schemas) help to explore concepts by going somehow “outside of them” in such a way that new knowledge is gained. This provides new support to Kant’s notion of intuitive construction, which is supposed to be both deductive and inventive [less ▲]

Natural metalliferous habitats represent unique study cases for scientific research as geopedology, biology and eco-evolution of metallophytes. Southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo hosts among the most important copper and cobalt deposits of the world, having a high economic value. Copper and cobalt outcroups have been formed during billion years by geological successions. More than one hundred hills are now scattered in an area of 300 km long and 50 km large in vegetation matrix consisting on an open forest called Miombo. This area is called Katangan Copperbelt. At the top of hills, the close proximity between the deposit and the soil surface lead to a high concentration of bioavailable copper and cobalt in soil solution exceeding the tolerance threshold of most of plants. More than 550 taxa including 10 % are identified as endemics and compose two distinct herbaceous plant formations: the steppic savanna is found on the lowest minralised soils and the steppe occurs in the highest mineralized soils at the top of hills. Mining activities have dramatic consequences on environement and public health, leading to the destruction of natural meatlliferous habitats and to the creation of anthropogenic polluted sites. Considering the threat on endemic plant species of the Katangan Copperbelt, several in situ and ex situ conservation strategies have been implemented for the last ten years in collaboration with several institutions. Furthermore, metallophytes constitute remarkable resources for the biotechnologies such as phytoremediation due to their metal tolerance or their accumulation ability. Anthropogenic metalliferous sites of the Katangan Copperbelt could be considered for the conservation of metallophyte with a perspective of remediation of polluted soils. Both challenges require the characterization of the environmental factors determining the distribution of plant species in natural sites and their performance in anthropogenic sites. This thesis aims at characterising the edaphic niche of metallophytes from the Katangan Copperbelt in order to propose actions combining the conservation of metallophyte and the phytostabilisation of polluted soils. The first axis focused on the study of two fundamental concepts in ecology, the theory of ecological niche and the concept of edaphic endemism, in order to understand the plant-soil relationships. Threatened endemic species were chosen as study case to determine the cause of the restricted distributions of metallophytes on metalliferous soils. The second axis tested the success of the establishment of endemic metallophytes in phytostabilisation strategies using the grass Microchloa altera. An assessment of the potential of other grasses was performed based on the specific criterions needed in phytostabilisation in order to identify candidate species for conservation–phystabilisation strategies. Modelling the hygrothermal behaviour of crop-based insulation products is essential to assess their impact on the energy performance of the building, predict indoor climate conditions, and prevent any risk of unexpected degradation. Traditionally, transient numerical models that predict internal conditions of construction materials consider that the variation of moisture storage with temperature is negligible although the sorp- tion behaviour is known to be temperature dependent. This paper investigates this par- ticular effect for crop-based materials and uses a refinement of standard mathematical representations. For this purpose, the effects of a thermal shock on the evolution of hygrothermal conditions inside a straw-bale wall are studied with several versions of a flexible research model. The latter is capable of incorporating the temperature depen- dency of the sorption curve with both a physically-based and an empirical description. A large climate chamber is used to gather experimental data and is able to host a full- size straw bale prefabricated panel. Internal conditions of straw bales are obtained with proper sensors bars. Results show that when large temperature gradients occur in a crop-based material, a model that considers temperature effect on moisture storage enhances greatly the prediction of internal conditions. Background: Over the past 20 years, many researchers have worked in developing various methods for measuring quality of life (QoL) of people with dementia. The aim of this review is to develop the conceptual frameworks of the dementia-specific QoL instruments, to identify their evolution over time and to provide elements of reflection on the QoL concept in dementia and its evaluation. Method: An electronic search was conducted on PsycINFO and MEDLINE databases, from January 1985 to June 2015 using a combination of key words that include quality of life, dementia and review. Result: The analysis of the conceptual frameworks of the eighteen selected dementia-specific QoL tools shows a great diversity in: (1) the QoL definitions (e.g. health-related QoL definitions, QoL definitions based on Lawton’s work or similar to this latter); (2) the theoretical QoL models (e.g. Lawton’ work and modified Lawton, adaptation, personhood); (3) the domains and dimensions; (4) the way to construct the instrument (e.g. development based on literature, opinion of the experts) and (5) the items’ formulation (e.g. use of criterion of intensity or frequency). Conclusion: There are different conceptual frameworks in the dementia-specific QoL measures with improvements over time (e.g. inclusion of interesting concepts such as adaptation, taking into account the views of patients themselves). Each of the conceptual parameters (definitions, models, domains and dimensions) is discussed to identify the scales that are conceptually the strongest. Through their review, recommendations for future instrument refinement and development are discussed and a new QoL definition is proposed. [less ▲]

On the 13th March 2009, Belgium’s French Community (currently named the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (WBF)) parliament, adopted the “décret mémoire” (decree of remembrance). This deed shows Belgian public authorities’ will to mark their presence in the memorial field. The decree organizes the recognition and the financing of multiple actors and institutions by the authorities, through a structure and a hitherto unseen way of functioning. Among its activities, the decree organizes yearly calls for projects, whose recipients are non-profit-making organizations and educational institutions that are either organized or subsidised by the WBF. The organisation set in place by the decree of remembrance appears to be a “political use of the past”. That means that some past events are chosen and promoted to give meaning to the individual memory, in a collective intent. This way of doing comes from the political will to organize the representation of one common past, aiming to bring out themes that carry particular values. Consequently, is it possible to study the power that the decree actually gives to the public authorities? Does it allow them to constrain or to influence other actors of their memory field? If that is the case, how could it be possible to demonstrate it? We suggest trying to find an answer to these interrogations through a case study concerning the 2014 calls for projects of the year. Impulsivity is a multidimensional construct that plays a prominent role in the development, maintenance, and relapse of addictive disorders. The UPPS-P model of impulsivity, which distinguishes between five impulsivity components (positive urgency, negative urgency, lack of perseverance, lack of premeditation, sensation seeking), has been increasingly investigated during the last decade in relation to addictive and risky behaviors. Unfortunately, it currently lacks a validated scale that allows Italian researchers and clinicians to measure impulsivity based on the UPPS-P model. The current study fills this gap by testing the psychometric properties of a short 20-item Italian scale used to assess the five dimensions of the UPPS-P model in 188 volunteer participants from the community. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a model of five distinct, but interrelated, impulsivity components. The results indicated good internal consistency (Cronbach's α ranges from .73 to .84). Construct validity was evidenced by specific relations with measures of addictive behaviors and depressive symptoms. On the whole, this study demonstrated that the Italian short UPPS-P has good psychometric properties. [less ▲]

Most information about the systematics and bioecology of Belgian mosquitoes dates back from before 1950, and only scattered information was produced during the last decades. In this paper we review and update the list of mosquito species recorded in Belgium, from first report (1908) to 2015. Six genera and 31 species were recorded so far, including 28 autochthonous species and three invasive alien species recently recorded in Belgium: Aedes albopictus (Skuse 1894), Ae. japonicus japonicus (Theobald 1901), and Ae. koreicus (Edwards 1917). The six genera are Anopheles (five species), Aedes (sixteen species), Coquillettidia (one species), Culex (four species), Culiseta (four species), and Orthopodomyia (one species). [less ▲]

Tropical cities extend from the urban area in parallel with their economic growth, delimiting a distinct section, the periurban area. In Katanga (Democratic Republic of the Congo), the human health of populations and the environment are threatened by mining activities in these specific areas. Species occurring naturally on copper-cobalt outcrops have a high conservation value and a potential interest in the rehabilitation of sites polluted with trace metals. This study aims to evaluate the success of the combination of the conservation of two copper-cobalt tolerant species (Crotalaria cobalticola and Anisopappus davyi) with phytostabilisation strategies. The establishment of two species from seed to seedling was analyzed in one site in a polluted periurban area and one control site; both were phytostabilized with the grass Microchloa altera. The rate of emergence, the survival and the growth of plants were compared according to the presence of M. altera and amendments (calcium and organic matter). The results highlighted the importance and necessity of the grass cover to the success of seedling establishment of the two studied species. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
