We present the Vortex Image Processing (VIP) library, a python package dedicated to astronomical high-contrast imaging. Our package relies on the extensive python stack of scientific libraries and aims to provide a flexible framework for high-contrast data and image processing. In this paper, we describe the capabilities of VIP related to processing image sequences acquired using the angular di↵erential imaging (ADI) observing technique. VIP implements functionalities for building high-contrast data processing pipelines, encompass- ing pre- and post-processing algorithms, potential sources position and flux estimation, and sensitivity curves generation. Among the reference point-spread function subtraction techniques for ADI post-processing, VIP includes several flavors of principal component analysis (PCA) based algorithms, such as annular PCA and incremental PCA algorithm capable of processing big datacubes (of several gigabytes) on a computer with limited memory. Also, we present a novel ADI algorithm based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), which comes from the same family of low-rank matrix approximations as PCA and provides fairly similar results. We showcase the ADI capabilities of the VIP library using a deep sequence on HR8799 taken with the LBTI/LMIRCam and its recently commissioned L-band vortex coronagraph. Using VIP we investigated the presence of additional companions around HR8799 and did not find any significant additional point source beyond the four known planets. VIP is available at http://github.com/vortex-exoplanet/VIP and is accompanied with Jupyter notebook tutorials illustrating the main functionalities of the library. [less ▲]

Located in the 'inner periphery' of Neapolitan historic center, at the foot of Capodimonte Park, historically the urban fabric of San Carlo Arena district eastern area has developed around two architectural complexes: Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Croci, for a long time aggregation places for local people. In addition, the ‘lava dei Vergini’ phenomenon, which periodically flooded the area outside the ancient city walls and the ‘for a via’ street (Via Foria), created optimal conditions for tuff extraction, used for local construction. In the past, physical features, such as the irregularity of the hilly area modeled by natural agents, the presence of several underground quarries, the grandeur of remarkable architectural presence, the numerous alleys in a heavily layered historical fabric, and the peculiarities of the social life that took place beyond Foria, have been a source of inspiration for several and also internationally renowned artists. The original identity of the ancient outer suburb, born from progressive expansions of the neighboring villages outside the city walls, is still marked. The closing elements that caracterize the architecture - in particular building fronts -, reflect its inhabitants attitudes and daily life. In this historic urban landscape 'shred’, this closure - despite the direct proximity to the adjacent old town and several, but not easily accessible, panoramic views of part of Naples Bay - continues to be one of the main identifying characters of the area. Although, for many centuries, this has allowed the 'spirit of places’ conservation, it has been transformed into a voluntary closure against the legality, which led to today serious state of neglect and social decay. Sometimes it is possible to find an excessive and illegal man-soil interaction, and unlawful activities influence and define some features of historical buildings in the area. However, for some years the local population has become aware of the existing problems by operating in a more concrete way, through different kinds of associations and volunteer that try to face the territory needs and emergencies. The goal is the elaboration of an update overview of the existing dynamics in this part of urban tissue and the identification of elements to take into account for possible enhancement perspectives in respect of an identity between invariant and processing factors. The publication of the book Nani in Festa. Iconografia, religione e politica in Ostia durante il secondo triumvirato (C. Bocherens ed., Edipuglia, 2012) was the occasion to highlight the exceptional decorative system of the “Domus aux Bucranes” and, especially, to put forward the frieze of dwarfs and its interpretation. With the discovery of these paintings, in the œcus, we have discovered a remarkable collection of stuccos, until today remains unpublished. This article gives a first description and an initial analysis of the fragments of stucco. Their placement on the wall and their relationship with pavements, frescoes and painted ceilings are studied, as well as the iconography they carrying, in close relation with the context of the domus, and, more generally, with Ostia in the late-republican period. The synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), a protein essential to the proper nervous system function, is found in presynaptic vesicles. Thus, SV2A targeting, using dedicated radiotracers combined with positron emission tomography (PET), allows the assessment of synaptic density in the living brain. The first-in-class fluorinated SV2A specific radioligand, [18F]UCB-H, is now available at high-activity through an efficient radiosynthesis compliant with the current good manufacturing practices (cGMP). We report here a non-invasive method to quantify [18F]UCB-H binding in rat brain with microPET. Validation study in rats confirmed the need of high enantiomeric purity to target SV2A in vivo. We demonstrated the reliability of a population-based input function to quantify SV2A in preclinical microPET setting. Finally, we investigated the in vivo metabolism of [18F]UCB-H and confirmed the negligible amount of radiometabolites in the rat brain. Hence, the in vivo quantification of SV2A using [18F]UCB-H microPET seems a promising tool for the assessment of the synaptic density in the rat brain, and opens the way for longitudinal follow-up in neurodegenerative diseases rodents’ models. We investigate the degeneracy of the superconducting vortex matter ground state by directly visualizing the vortex con gurations in a kagomé lattice of elongated antidots via scanning Hall probe microscopy (SHPM). The observed vortex patterns, at specifi c applied magnetic fi elds, are in good agreement with the confi gurations obtained using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) simulation. Both results indicate that the long range interaction in this nano-structured superconductor is unable to lift degeneracy between different vortex states and the pattern formation is mainly ruled by the nearest neighbour interaction. This simpli cation allows the identi cation of a set of simple rules characterizing the vortex con gurations. We demonstrated that these rules can explain both the observed vortex distributions and the magnetic fi eld dependent degree of degeneracy. [less ▲]

Background: Platelets have been involved in both surveillance and host defense against severe infection. To date, whether platelet phenotype or other hemostasis components could be associated with predisposition to sepsis in critical illness remains unknown. The aim of this work was to identify platelet markers that could predict sepsis occurrence in critically ill injured patients. Results: This single-center, prospective, observational, 7-month study was based on a cohort of 99 non-infected adult patients admitted to ICUs for elective cardiac surgery, trauma, acute brain injury and post-operative prolonged ventilation and followed up during ICU stay. Clinical characteristics and severity score (SOFA) were recorded on admission. Platelet activation markers, including fibrinogen binding to platelets, platelet membrane P-selectin expression, plasma soluble CD40L, and platelet-leukocytes aggregates were assayed by flow cytometry at admission and 48h later, and also at the time of sepsis diagnosis (Sepsis-3 criteria) and 7 days later for sepsis patients. Hospitalization data and outcomes were also recorded. Of the 99 patients, 19 developed sepsis after a median time of 5 days. SOFA at admission was higher; their levels of fibrinogen binding to platelets (platelet-Fg) and of D-dimers were significantly increased compared to the other patients. Levels 48h after ICU admission were no longer significant. Platelet-Fg % was an independent predictor of sepsis (P = 0.030). By ROC curve analysis cutoff points for SOFA (AUC=0.85) and Platelet-Fg (AUC=0.75) were 8 and 50%, respectively. The prior risk of sepsis (19%) increased to 50% when SOFA was above 8, to 46% when Platelet-Fg was above 50%, and to 87% when both SOFA and Platelet-Fg were above their cutoff values. By contrast, when the two parameters were below their cutoffs, the risk of sepsis was negligible (3.8%). Patients with sepsis had longer ICU and hospital stays and higher death rate. Conclusion: In addition to SOFA, platelet-bound fibrinogen levels assayed by flow cytometry within 24h of ICU admission help identifying critically ill patients at risk of developing sepsis.
