In this study, the modal shift potential of introducing a free alternative (free public transportation) and of changing the relative prices of transportation is examined. The influence of a cognitive analysis on the zero-price effect is also analyzed. The data used for the analysis stem from a stated preference survey with a sample of approximately 670 respondents that was conducted in Flanders, Belgium. The data are analyzed using a mixed logit model. The modeling results yield findings that confirm the existence of a zero-price effect in transport, which is in line with the literature. This zero-price effect is increased by the forced cognitive analysis for shopping trips, although not for work/school or recreational trips. The results also demonstrate the importance of the current mode choice in hypothetical mode choices and the importance of car availability. The influence of changing relative prices on the modal shift is found to be insignificant. This might be partially because the price differences were too small to matter. Hence, an increase in public transport use can be facilitated by the introduction of free public transport, particularly when individuals evaluate the different alternatives in a more cognitive manner. These findings should be useful to policy makers evaluating free public transport and considering how best to target and promote relevant policy. [less ▲]

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is one of the most deadly forms of cancers with no satisfactory treatment to date. Recent studies have identified myoferlin, a ferlin family member, in human pancreas adenocarcinoma where its expression was associated to a bad prognosis. However, the function of myoferlin in pancreas adenocarcinoma has not been reported. In other cell types, myoferlin is involved in several key plasma membrane processes such as fusion, repair, endocytosis and tyrosine kinase receptor activity. In this study, we showed that myoferlin silencing in BxPC-3 human pancreatic cancer cells resulted in the inhibition of cell proliferation in vitro and in a significant reduction of the tumor volume in chick chorioallantoic membrane assay. In addition to be smaller, the tumors formed by the myoferlin-silenced cells showed a marked absence of functional blood vessels. We further demonstrated that this effect was due, at least in part, to an inhibition of VEGFA secretion by BxPC-3 myoferlin-silenced cells. Using immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, we linked the decreased VEGFA secretion to an impairment of VEGFA exocytosis. The clinical relevance of our results was further strengthened by a significant correlation between myoferlin expression in a series of human pancreatic malignant lesions and their angiogenic status evaluated by the determination of the blood vessel density. SiO2 and Ag–SiO2 doped TiO2 films and powders have been produced using a controlled sol–gel process. The dopant has been introduced using an alkoxysilane-functionalized ligand, with or without complexed silver ions. The influence of dopants on physico-chemical properties of the catalysts is studied by XRD, TEM–EDX, DRUV–vis analyses in the case of powders, while GIXRD, XPS, profilometry, UV–vis absorption analyses have been used for thin films. The photocatalytic activity has been evaluated from the degradation of methylene blue under UV-A light in the presence of the different catalysts over a period of 24 h. The detailed comparison between powders and films highlights a surprising positive effect in the case of films due to the presence of the substrate. In the case of photocatalytic powders, the presence of SiO2 or Ag–SiO2 into the TiO2 matrix has a detrimental effect on the photocatalytic activity while the opposite tendency is observed in the case of films, with best activities obtained with Ag–SiO2 doping. Different factors, in particular crystallinity modification between powders and films, have been studied to explain these opposite behaviors. In the case of powders, crystallization is hindered by SiO2 and Ag particles incorporation into the TiO2 matrix, leading to a decrease of the photocatalytic activity. In the case of thin films, probably because of the presence of a substrate, crystallization is not influenced by the presence of SiO2 and Ag particles. Therefore, the latter ones can fully play their role of electron traps leading to an enhanced photocatalytic activity. [less ▲]

Acrylamide is a food process contaminant with carcinogenic and genotoxic properties. As a result of intensive research, numerous mitigation initiatives to prevent its formation were suggested and various of them were implemented in the food chain. To evaluate if the mitigation strategies applied were significant, a comparison was made between two time periods (2002e2007 versus 2008e2013) in terms of acrylamide food levels and dietary exposure in Belgian. The most important changes observed are a significant decrease of the acrylamide content in potato crisps and gingerbread, and a significant increase in (instant) coffee. Additionally, the acrylamide content of breakfast cereals, bread and rolls, chocolate and baby biscuits showed a downward trend, whereas for coffee substitute and ready-to-eat French fries (mainly obtained from catering facilities), an upward, although not significant, trend was observed. These changes resulted in only a slight, but insignificant decline of the overall dietary exposure of adults, adolescents and children. The mean and P95 intake estimated in the 2008e2013 period for these consumer groups corresponded to margins of exposure (MOE) ranging between 515 and 236 and between 155 and 71, respectively, when based on the endpoint for neoplastic effects (BMDL10 ¼ 0.17 mg/kg bw per day). Such low MOE values indicate that acrylamide remains an issue for public concern, requiring renewed attention. [less ▲]

Cost minimization is a key objective in managing logistics services. In this context, a growing interest in quality improvement can be observed. However, service quality is hard to quantify as it is a function of varying customer perceptions over time, of the measurement process and of the analysis of the data gathered. This study examines the logistics service quality by scales developed according to SERVQUAL instrument. A survey of 200 customers of logistics service providers (LSP) was conducted in Da Nang City. The data analysis shows that LSPs in Da Nang city need to improve Research and Development and to develop Customer Care programs. [less ▲]

Date palm sap (Phoenix dactylifera L.), also known as "legmi", is a fresh juice ex¬tracted from date palm trees. The present study aimed to elucidate the effects of collection time (at the beginning of the tapping period and after seven days of collection) on the amino acid profile and physico-chemical properties of date palm sap from both male and female trees. Dry matter, protein, amino acid, and sugar profiles were determined using the Kjeldahl method, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and High-Performance Anion-Exchange Chro¬matography with Pulsed Amperometric Detection (HPAEC-PAD), respectively. Date palm sap from both male and female trees contained high levels of carbohydrates. HPLC analysis showed that this fraction was dominated by sucrose in the sap sample from female trees compared to that from male trees. Male date palm sap was noted to exhibit lower dry matter content than female date palm sap but higher protein, total polyphenol, ash, and amino acid contents. While the major essential amino acids in the sap from male trees consisted of valine and threonine, they were represented by lysine and phenylalanine in sap samples from female trees. Further, Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis showed the presence of a proteinic band of 30 kDa only for the sap from male trees. Taken together, the sap from both male and female date palm trees had a number of properties that are highly valued by the functional food industry. [less ▲]

Previous studies have clearly demonstrated that the development of orthographic representations relies on phonological recoding. However, substantial questions persist about the remaining unexplained variance in the acquisition of word-specific orthographic knowledge that is still underspecified. The main aim of this study was to explore whether two cognitive factors—sensitivity to orthographic regularities and short-term memory (STM) for serial order—make independent contributions to the acquisition of novel orthographic representations beyond that of the phonological core component and the level of preexisting word-specific orthographic knowledge. To this end, we had children from second to sixth grades learn novel written word forms using a repeated spelling practice paradigm. The speed at which children learned the word forms and their long-term retention (1 week and 1 month later) were assessed. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that phonological recoding, preexisting word-specific orthographic knowledge, and order STM explained a portion of the variance in orthographic learning speed, whereas phonological recoding, preexisting word-specific orthographic knowledge, and orthographic sensitivity each explained a portion of variance in the long-term retention of the newly created orthographic representations. A secondary aim of the study was to determine the developmental trajectory of the abilities to acquire novel orthographic word forms over the course of primary schooling. As expected, results showedan effect of age on both learning speed and long-term retention. The specific roles of orthographic sensitivity and order STM as independent factors involved in different steps of orthographic learning are discussed. [less ▲]
