Le photogramme est, au cinéma, la plus petite unité de prise de vue. Image fixe, unité élémentaire du film, le photogramme forme la cellule figée d’un mouvement qui se reconstitue sous l’effet d’un défilement réglé (24 photogrammes/seconde) par le dispositif technique du cinéma. Image paradoxale en ce qu’elle reste invisible au spectateur malgré sa force iconique, le photogramme trouve cependant, dans le flux qui le conduit insensiblement à la disparition, certaines zones de visibilité qui en révèlent le caractère à la fois fragile et intensif. Nous allons donc envisager certaines pratiques ou certains usages du photogramme cinématographique, tout en essayant de dégager, au départ de ces pratiques, les éléments d’une théorie du photogramme, que Roland Barthes et Sylvie Pierre appelaient déjà de leurs vœux. Des protos-photogrammes et de leur usage scientifique chez Muybridge et Marey, aux usages artistiques contemporains, en passant par des pratiques publicitaires, promotionnelles ou analytiques, nous allons voir que le photogramme reste un objet singulier. A selective and sensitive electroanalytical method was developed for arsenic determination based on a nanogold (AuNP) modified solid carbon paste work- ing electrode (SCPE) modified in two steps (i) physisorp- tion and (ii) additional electrodeposition of nanogold par- ticles in the presence of iodide. Copper(II) interference was solved by covering the gold layer by a self assembled mono layer (SAM) of glutathione. Using DPASV a linear response of the signal was obtained as a function of As(III) in the concentration range 0.05–20mM (4– 1498 ppb) with a limit of detection of 0.01 mM (0.9 ppb). Sample stirring and degassing were not needed. Applica- tion to the determination of arsenic(III) and (V) in un- derground water samples from Burkina Faso was success- fully achieved. [less ▲]

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent and self-renewing cells that reside essentially in the bone marrow as a non-hematopoietic cell population, but may also be isolated from the connective tissues of most organs. MSCs represent a heterogeneous population of adult, fibroblast-like cells characterized by their ability to differentiate into tissues of mesodermal lineages including adipocytes, chondrocytes and osteocytes. For several years now, MSCs have been evaluated for their in vivo and in vitro immunomodulatory and 'tissue reconstruction' properties, which could make them interesting in various clinical settings, and particularly in organ transplantation. This paper aims to review current knowledge on the properties of MSCs and their use in pre-clinical and clinical studies in solid organ transplantation, and particularly in the field of liver transplantation. The first available clinical data seem to show that MSCs are safe to use, at least in the medium-term, but more time is needed to evaluate the potential adverse effects of long-term use. Many issues must be resolved on the correct use of MSCs. Intensive in vitro and pre-clinical research are the keys to a better understanding of the way that MSCs act, and to eventually lead to clinical success. [less ▲]

Objectives: We evaluated azacitidine (VidazaH) safety and efficacy in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML), in a real-life setting. Treatment response, dose, and schedule were assessed. Methods: This non-interventional, post-marketing survey included 49/50 patients receiving azacitidine at 14 Belgian haematology centres from 2010–2012. Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), including treatment-related TEAEs, and serious TEAEs (TESAEs) were recorded throughout the study. Treatment response [complete response (CR), partial response (PR), haematological improvement (HI), stable disease (SD), treatment failure (TF)) and transfusion-independence (TI) were evaluated at completion of a 1-year observation period (1YOP) or at treatment discontinuation, and overall survival (OS), at study conclusion. Results: The median age of patients was 74.7 (range: 43.9–87.8) years; 69.4% had MDS, 26.5% had primary or secondary AML, and 4.1% had CMML. Treatment-related TEAEs, grade 3–4 TEAEs, and TESAEs were reported in 67.3%, 28.6%, and 18.4% of patients, respectively. During 1YOP, patients received a median of 7 (1–12) treatment cycles. Treatment response was assessed for 38/49 patients. Among MDS and CMML patients (n529), 41.4% had CR, PR, or HI, 41.4% had SD, and 17.2% had TF. Among AML patients (n59), 44.4% had CR or PR, 33.3% had SD, and 22.2% had TF. TI was observed in 14/32 (43.8%) patients who were transfusion-dependent at baseline. Median (95% confidence interval) OS was 490 (326–555) days; 1-year OS estimate was 0.571 (0.422–0.696). Conclusions: Our data support previous findings that azacitidine has a clinically acceptable safety profile and shows efficacy. [less ▲]

Aims. We aim to determine the theoretical instability strips of white dwarfs with various H and He content in their atmospheres, from a solar composition to a H-depleted atmosphere. Pulsators with mixed H/He atmospheres are indeed known to exist, and these are the white dwarfs in cataclysmic accreting systems of the GW Lib type. We thus also aim to determine the range of periods of excited pulsation modes, and to qualitatively compare these to the observed periods in GW Lib white dwarf pulsators. Methods. In this first full nonadiabatic stability analysis of pulsators of the kind, we applied a time-dependent convection treatment and an energy leakage argument to compute, for cooling models of white dwarfs with various masses and envelope compositions, the location of the blue and the red edges, as well as the properties of pulsation modes. Results. We find that our derived instability strips form a true "continuum" in the log g-Teff plane and that their individual location depends uniquely on the assumed atmospheric composition, from the solar composition models at low effective temperatures to the H-depleted models at much higher temperatures. Taking into account our previous results about the ZZ Ceti (pure H atmosphere) and V777 Her (pure He atmosphere) white dwarf pulsators, this implies that all of these instability domains are "connected" together via the same fundamental driving mechanism. Applying our results to the case of white dwarf pulsators of the GW Lib type, we find that our theoretical instability strips can qualitatively account for all of the known cases. The computed range of periods of excited modes also compares qualitatively very well to the observed ones. Conclusions. The GW Lib pulsators are very similar in nature to ZZ Ceti and V777 Her white dwarfs. It is the (various) chemical composition in their atmosphere/envelope that defines their specific pulsation properties. Beyond GW Lib pulsators, white dwarfs can sometimes exhibit mixed H/He atmospheres, such as in the recently found proto-He white dwarf pulsators. Our results open the way towards quantitative asteroseismology of these various kinds of white dwarfs. [less ▲]

This review aims to synthesize the knowledge on the taxonomy of Southeast Asian murine rodents and the challenges associated with the identification of habitat preferences and associated rodent-borne diseases. Recent studies concerning the Rattini tribe have identified unclear species boundaries that would benefit from further investigation. The development of barcoding may allow more accurate identification of rodents, specifically for complex species. However, knowledge on the distribution and habitat specializations of many common murine rodents is still scarce, particularly regarding the specific habitat preferences of most synanthropic rodent species (Rattus tanezumi or Rattus exulans). Several studies have analyzed the prevalence of major rodent-borne diseases in Southeast Asia and it appears that the greatest risk of rodent zoonoses are in the lowland rainfed and irrigated landscapes, generally in and around rice fields. The aim of “HSS-SERF” project was to investigate and evaluate the seismic performance of dual-steel building frames, realized from two different steel grades: Mild Carbon Steel (MCS) and High Strength Steel (HSS). A comprehensive set of dual-steel frames (moment resisting, concentrically and eccentrically braced) were designed, which allowed the identification of realistic member sizes for both MCS and HSS components. Several practical solutions for bolted and welded beam-to-column joints were identified and designed. Further, an extensive numerical program was carried out for the seismic performance evaluation of frames. The ductility and over-strength demands, and q-factors associated with different performance levels were evaluated. Furthermore, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on joint assemblies and components. Guidelines were elaborated for the conceptual design and PBD of dual-steel frames under seismic actions, and the technical and economic efficiency of dualsteel structures vs. conventional ones were finally evaluated. The main outcomes of the project consist in: (i) development and characterisation in terms of global ductility and over-strength demands of dual-steel frames with composite columns (innovative solutions in European context); (ii) development of design recommendations; (iii) proposal of innovative solutions for beam-to-column joints with composite columns; (iv) recommendation for weld details and appropriate component method design approaches; (v) evaluation of technical and economic efficiency of the dual-steel approach. Ceramic clays are one of the most complicated ceramic systems because of the very complex relationship between the behavior of minerals during the ceramic processing and the transformations during heating. A major challenge is to predict the phase transformations in clay ceramics. The aims are to establish reference data of ceramics products that can be formed based on the mineralogical composition of the local raw materials. These data, in turn, can be compared with the archaeological ceramics in order to study their origins. The mineralogical compositions and transformations during the firing (550 to 1100ºC under oxidizing conditions) of seven clayey materials sampled from the main clay deposits of Northern Morocco were evaluated by X-ray powder diffraction. Two groups of clays were evidenced according to the type of neoformed high-temperature minerals: non-calcareous clays and calcareous clays. For the non-calcareous raw materials, spinel is produced at 950°C. Cristobalite and mullite were formed above 1000ºC from clays that contain illite, kaolinite and chlorite. In clays containing vermiculite and high amount of chlorite, hematite was formed from 950°C. Firing of calcareous clays at temperatures > 950ºC yielded Ca-silicates (diopside, gehlenite and wollastonite), spinel, cristobalite, hematite and feldspars. Mullite may also form in the calcareous clay products, when the carbonates content exceeds 10%. [less ▲]

The present study investigates the characteristics of ultraviolet auroral features located equatorward of the main emission appearing in Hubble Space Telescope images of the northern and southern Jovian hemispheres obtained in 2000-2007. On average, one feature is observed every day, but several auroral structures are occasionally seen over a wide range of local times in the same image. Several properties of these features are analyzed, such as their location, emitted power and lifetime. Additionally, we magnetically map the auroral features to the equatorial plane using the VIPAL model in order to compare their observed properties with those of magnetospheric injections detected by the Galileo spacecraft. The equatorward auroral features show up between the Io footpath and the main auroral emission, at all System III longitudes, in agreement with Galileo measurements. Moreover, we compare the magnetic flux associated with these features with estimates of the out-going flux related to the radial transport of plasma in the Jovian magnetosphere and we find that they could account for at least one third of this flux. This comparative study shows that the auroral features under study are most probably related to magnetospheric injections and thus sheds light on the processes involved in the magnetosphere-ionosphere dynamics. This paper focuses on the computation of asymptotic standard errors (ASE) of ability estimators with dichotomous item response models. A general framework is considered and ability estimators are defined from a very restricted set of assumptions and formulas. This approach encompasses most standard methods such as maximum likelihood, weighted likelihood, maximum a posteriori and robust estimators. A general formula for the ASE is derived from the theory of M-estimation. Well-known results are found back as particular cases for the maximum and robust estimators, while new ASE proposals for the weighted likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimators are presented. These new formulas are compared to traditional ones by means of a simulation study under Rasch modeling. [less ▲]

To date, magnetic shields utilizing high-temperature superconductor materials mostly comprise bulk materials, usually shaped into a cylinder and then heat treated. We analyze the potential of thin-film technology, whereby a layer of superconductor is deposited on a substrate, to fabricate magnetic shields. Films deposited on a curved surface are inevitably granular, leading to reduced critical current density compared with crystalline films. This limits the maximum field that can be screened. Granular films also have an enhanced penetration depth compared with the bulk value, which determines the maximum possible screening at applied fields below the maximum.We demonstrate the utility of a mutual inductancemeasurement to evaluate small flat test samples of a granular film for their potential as a shielding material in a more complex geometry. Thismeasurement predicts both themaximum magnetic field that can be screened and the residual leakage at fields below the maximum. The tested film was produced by the Electrophoretic deposition of YBCO on a silver substrate. The maximum screening field was comparable with that obtained for a similar film on a cylindrical substrate. We also show comparable results from a crystalline YBCO film. [less ▲]
