This paper proves the practicality of an iterative algorithm for solving realistic large-scale SCOPF problems. This algorithm is based on the combination of a contingency filtering scheme, used to identify the binding contingencies at the optimum, and a network compression method, used to reduce the complexity of the post-contingency models included in the SCOPF formulation. We show that by combining these two complementary ideas, it is possible to solve in a reasonable time SCOPF problems on large power system models with a large number of contingencies. Unlike most results reported for large-scale SCOPF problems, our algorithm uses a non-linear AC network model in both pre-contingency and post-contingency states, optimizes both active/reactive powers flows jointly, and treats the discrete variables. The proposed algorithm is implemented with state-of-the-art solvers and applied to two systems: a national grid with 2563 buses and 1297 contingencies, and a model of the European transmission network with 9241 buses and 12000 contingencies. Proteins are complex macromolecules that evolved over billions of years to be active in aqueous solution. Water is a key element that stabilizes their structure, and most structural studies on proteins have thus been carried out in aqueous environment. However, recent experimental approaches have opened the possibility to gain structural information on proteins from gas-phase measurements. The obtained results revealed significant structural memory in proteins when transferred from water to the gas phase. However, after several years of experimental and theoretical research, the nature of the structural changes induced by vaporization, the exact characteristics of proteins in the gas phase, and the physicochemical forces stabilizing dehydrated proteins are still unclear. We will review here these issues using both experimental and theoretical sources of information. [less ▲]

A two-level adaptive control scheme against power system voltage instability is proposed, to deal with emergency conditions by acting on distribution transformers and/or by curtailing some loads. The lower level includes distributed controllers, each acting once the voltage at a monitored transmission bus settles below a threshold value. The upper level benefits from wide-area monitoring and adjusts in real-time the voltage thresholds of the local controllers. Emergency detection is based on the sign of sensitivities. The proposed scheme is robust with respect to communication failures. Its performance is illustrated through detailed simulations of a small but realistic 74-bus test system. [less ▲]

The main objective of this document is to establish if the UE can be considered as an actor of the Latin-American regional integration. The method of the current research is qualitative. The different aspects of the interregional European strategy for regional integration towards Latin America (E.I.S.R.I. – L.A.) are analyzed as follows. First, the discourse that places regional integration as one of the priorities of the given strategy is studied. Second, the economic actions responsible of materializing that priority are checked. Third, the political actions of the E.I.S.R.I. – L.A. are introduced. The results of the analysis make it evident that although EU appears to be an actor of the Latin-American regional integration, its influence seems to be restricted. Nevertheless, this affirmation should be relativized because this lack of influence can be due to an absence of mechanisms of measurement of results in terms of regional integration. [less ▲]

Cadmium and zinc share many similar physiochemical properties, but their compartmentation, complexation and impact on other mineral element distribution in plant tissues may drastically differ. In this study, we address the impact of 10-μM Cd or 50-μM Zn treatment on ion distribution in leaves of a metallicolous population of the non-hyperaccumulating species Zygophyllum fabago at tissue and cell level, and the consequences on the plant response through a combined physiological, proteomic and metabolite approach. Micro-proton induced X-ray emission and laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry analyses indicated hot spots of Cd concentrations in the vicinity of vascular bundles in response to Cd treatment, essentially bound to S-containing compounds as revealed by extended X-Ray absorption fine structure and non-protein thiol compounds analyses. A preferential accumulation of Zn occurred in vascular bundle and spongy mesophyll in response to Zn treatment, and was mainly bound to O/N-ligands. Leaf proteomics and physiological status evidenced a protection of photosynthetically active tissues and the maintenance of cell turgor through specific distribution and complexation of toxic ions, reallocation of some essential elements, synthesis of proteins involved in photosynthetic apparatus or C-metabolism, and metabolite synthesis, with some specificities regarding the considered heavy metal treatment.
