Ichthyosaurs rapidly diversified and colonised a wide range of ecological niches during the Early and Middle Triassic period, but experienced a major decline in diversity near the end of the Triassic. Timing and causes of this demise and the subsequent rapid radiation of the diverse, but less disparate, parvipelvian ichthyosaurs are still unknown, notably because of inadequate sampling in strata of latest Triassic age. Here, we describe an exceptionally large radius from Lower Jurassic deposits at Penarth near Cardiff, South Wales (UK) the morphology of which places it within the giant Triassic shastasaurids. A tentative total body size estimate, based on a regression analysis of various complete ichthyosaur skeletons, yields a value of 12-15 m. The specimen is substantially younger than any previously reported last known occurrences of shastasaurids and implies a Lazarus range in the lowermost Jurassic for this ichthyosaur morphotype. Populations considered for shoulder analysis are often composed of various ratios of men and women. It is consequently hypothesized that gender has no significant effect on the joint kinematic. However the literature reports, for the shoulder, differences in the range of motion between genders. The specific influence of gender on the scapula-thoracic kinematics has not been studied yet. The dominant shoulder of two populations of men and women composed of 11 subjects each were evaluated in three dimensions for three distinct motions: flexion in the sagittal plane, abduction in the frontal plane and gleno-humeral internal/external rotation with the arm abducted at 90°. Posture, kinematics and range of motion were studied separately. For flexion and abduction and with regard to the scapular kinematic, external rotation were significantly larger for women than men. The differences were of at least 5° at 120° of humeral elevation. Upward rotations were identical. Women also showed larger average active humero-thoracic range of motion. The mean differences were of 13°, 7°, 12° and 5° for abduction, flexion, internal rotation and external rotation, respectively. No difference was observed between the scapular resting positions of both populations. The observed differences concerning both the scapular and humeral patterns would indicate that the shoulder behavior of men and women should not be expected to be similar. [less ▲]

Fast rotation in massive stars is predicted to induce mixing in their interior, but a population of fast-rotating stars with normal nitrogen abundances at their surface has recently been revealed (Hunter et al. 2009; Brott et al. 2011, but see Maeder et al. 2014). However, as the binary fraction of these stars is unknown, no definitive statements about the ability of single-star evolutionary models including rotation to reproduce these observations can be made. Our work combines for the first time a detailed surface abundance analysis with a radial-velocity monitoring for a sample of bright, fast-rotating Galactic OB stars to put strong constraints on stellar evolutionary and interior models. L’objectif de cette revue est de synthétiser les connaissances sur l’influence du polymorphisme nucléotidique Catéchol-O-Méthyltransférase (COMT) val108/158met sur la diminution des capacités de mémoire de travail (et plus particulièrement de ses aspects exécutifs) associée à l’avancée en âge. Par son implication dans les processus de dégradation de la dopamine, notamment au niveau préfrontal, ce polymorphisme semble avoir un rôle central dans l’efficacité de la mise en œuvre de processus exécutifs. En effet, plusieurs études suggèrent un avantage phénotypique de l’allèle met du polymorphisme COMT lors de tâches exécutives requérant une stabilité des représentations cognitives. Etant donné les modifications cérébrales observées avec l’âge au niveau frontal, le polymorphisme COMT semble constituer une piste pertinente pour comprendre les altérations cognitives liées à l’âge. En effet, suite à la diminution d’efficacité du système dopaminergique, les personnes âgées présentent des déficits de mémoire de travail plus ou moins importants selon leur génotype pour le polymorphisme COMT. De plus, l’activité cérébrale associée à la réalisation de ces tâches va également varier en fonction de ce polymorphisme. Ces résultats soulignent l’intérêt d’intégrer les approches de génétique comportementale et de neuroimagerie génétique afin d’approfondir notre compréhension du vieillissement cognitif. [less ▲]
