Roof Stacking represents an approach to accommodate increasing population in the major cities around Europe, new agendas for urban densification emerge in response of finding sustainable solutions to use existing urban infrastructure in the most efficient ways. Several methods for urban densification are being proposed and seen in real life. One of those methods is roof stacking, which is defined as the added structure over the rooftop of an existing building to create one or more stories of living spaces. This report represents the results of conducted investigation on roof stacking method as a sustainable approach for urban densification. The aim of this report is to present a guideline for roof stacking construction approaches and methods and present the learned lessons through interviewing notable architects from different European countries who applied roof stacking. This report identifies the challenges and opportunities when applying roof stacking in addition to proposing recommended solution for the different obstacles that are faced when adding extensions on the rooftops. Deep repository in geological formations is the preferential solution considered by many countries to manage high-level nuclear wastes. In Switzerland, the Opalinus Clay is a candidate host rock. In this context, in situ and laboratory tests are conducted on Opalinus Clay to demonstrate the feasibility of deep disposal in this argillaceous formation. This paper presents a constitutive model able to fit the experimental data obtained from some triaxial tests conducted by Jahns [1] on cores from bore hole Schlattingen SLA- 1. The elasto-plastic behaviour of Opalinus Clay is reproduced thanks to a Drucker-Prager model, taking into account the anisotropy behaviour of this sedimentary rock. The objective is to employ a single set of parameters representative of the material. In a second version of the model, the stress-dependency of the elastic properties and damage are taken into account. Finally, the parameters calibrated with experimental tests are used to simulate the excavation of a gallery with a second gradient approach. [less ▲]

Experimental design is necessary to identify major experimental parameters linked to a process in order to optimize it and reduce costs. It also helps to reduce the number of experiments and analyze data statistically. This work aims to present some possibilities of how experimental design may be applied in the field of pharmaceutical powders production by spray drying. Depending on the application, powders need particular size, morphology, purity, crystallinity or polymorphism. All these characteristics may be influenced by process parameters and should be controlled to reach pharmaceutical requirements. [less ▲]

L’environnement est une préoccupation majeure de notre société, pourtant nombreux sont encore les indécis et trop peu nombreux sont ceux qui sont prêts à agir et à changer leurs habitudes pour améliorer la situation critique actuelle. Dans le présent article, j’aborderai, en utilisant le modèle nord-américain comme principale référence, l’évolution d’une représentation de la nature. D’abord vue comme nécessaire car symbolisant à la fois un nouveau continent et une nouvelle identité ensuite vue comme consommable, artificielle et enfin vue comme facultative. Afin de pallier cette dernière conception, parfois inconsciente, de la nature comme « accessoire », dont on pourrait se passer, et favoriser un mode de vie et une consommation écologiquement responsables, je terminerai par donner une série de pistes d’action exerçables aux niveaux individuel, collectif et sur les pouvoirs publics. This paper presents a novel approach, which identifies a buffer zone around a given study system and replaces the external system with an equivalent. The aim is to obtain a reduced system, which is suitable for assessment of long-term voltage and frequency dynamics in the study system. First, the proposed methodology ensures that all components, which are impacting the voltage profile of the study system, are included in the buffer zone. For that purpose, the propagation of reactive power changes from the boundary of the study system into the external system are used in a modified depth-first search algorithm to identify the buffer zone. Second, the external system is replaced with equivalents accounting for inertia and primary frequency control effects. The proposed method was successfully tested on a modified version of the ENTSO-E Dynamic Study Model. [less ▲]

In the Monte Carlo method, quantities of interest for the application are calculated through statistical sampling of interaction processes. Gamma spectroscopy is a widely used technique, well-illustrated by the following list of examples: Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring, nuclear industry, geochemical investigation, and astrophysics. Most radioactive sources produce gamma rays, which are of various energies and intensities. Geant4 (for GEometry ANd Tracking) is a platform for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter, using Monte Carlo methods. The GEANT4 toolkit allows the simulation of the following physical processes: the photo-electrical effect, the Compton Effect, the electron-positron pairs generation and the Rayleigh diffusion. Our study shows the combination of gamma spectrometry, development of related Monte Carlo equation and the presentation of the Geant4 toolkit for gamma spectrometry simulation (simulation of the interaction of gamma photon through matter). It is clearly found, at the end of this study, that Monte-Carlo simulation is a useful, inexpensive alternative that also provides greater flexibility and gained time when determining the detector response and efficiency during an environmental monitoring. Polycystic kidney diseases (PKDs) are genetic disorders that can cause renal failure and death in children and adults. Lowering cAMP in cystic tissues through the inhibition of the type-2 vasopressin receptor (V2R) constitutes a validated strategy to reduce disease progression. We identified a peptide from green mamba venom that exhibits nanomolar affinity for the V2R without any activity on 155 other G-protein–coupled receptors or on 15 ionic channels. Mambaquaretin-1 is a full antagonist of the V2R activation pathways studied: cAMP production, beta-arrestin interaction, and MAP kinase activity. This peptide adopts the Kunitz fold known to mostly act on potassium channels and serine proteases. Mambaquaretin-1 interacts selectively with the V2R through its first loop, in the same manner that aprotinin inhibits trypsin. Injected in mice, mambaquaretin-1 increases in a dose-dependent manner urine outflow with concomitant reduction of urine osmolality, indicating a purely aquaretic effect associated with the in vivo blockade of V2R. CD1-pcy/pcy mice, a juvenile model of PKD, daily treated with 13 μ𝝁g of mambaquaretin-1 for 99 d, developed less abundant (by 33%) and smaller (by 47%) cysts than control mice. Neither tachyphylaxis nor apparent toxicity has been noted. Mambaquaretin-1 represents a promising therapeutic agent against PKDs. [less ▲]

Roots, the belowground part of plants, play a major role in plant development. Their study in field conditions is important to identify suitable soil management practices for suitable crop production but roots are hidden by soil and their study is therefore difficult. Estimation of root system development is often based on the soil coring method which allows repeated measurements during the growing season in the field as well as in different soil horizons. However, this method is limited due to the time needed to extract roots from soil cores and to manually sort them from crop residues before quantification. To avoid this tedious sorting step and remove operator subjectivity, a faster sorting method was developed. Near infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HIS) was tested as a rapid method to quantify the amount of roots in soil samples. [less ▲]
