Valorising CO2 as a renewable C1 feedstock for producing added value building blocks is the scope of many academic and industrial researches. Carbon dioxide is a thermodynamically and kinetically stable molecule that can be converted into five membered cyclic carbonates by coupling with epoxides using organometallic complexes or organocatalysts. To date, the identification and development of highly efficient (organo)catalysts under mild experimental conditions still remains challenging. In particular, the synthesis of six membered cyclic carbonates by the CO2/oxetane coupling using such organocatalysts has never been reported to our knowledge. In this context, we developed a new highly efficient bicomponent homogeneous organocatalyst composed of an ammonium salt as the catalyst and fluorinated single or double hydrogen bond donor activators (HBD). First, the efficiency of this new organocatalyst for the fast and selective CO2/epoxide coupling was investigated through detailed kinetic studies by IR spectroscopy under pressure and results were compared with the most efficient organocatalysts reported in the literature. This study was completed by molecular modeling in order to elucidate the reaction mechanism. DFT calculations showed that the hexafluoroisopropanol functionalities of HBDs strengthened the proton donor capability and allowed a better stabilization by hydrogen bonding of the intermediates and transition states. Finally, the use of this dual organocatalyst was extended to the coupling of CO2 with less reactive oxetanes to produce hydroxyl telechelic oligocarbonates. [less ▲]

Introduction: The Dropout phenomenon has been studied extensively in general psychotherapy and in more specific domains. Therapeutic programs for male batterers across Europe, United States or Canada also have their share of problems in their attempts to maintain users in treatment. The purpose of this study is to identify potential intrapsychic variables associated with dropout and completion of this kind of treatment. Method: Fifty one male offenders enrolled in a group treatment for domestic violence took part in the study (23 who abandoned and 28 who completed). Before the start of therapy, they were surveyed using questionnaires and structured clinical interview to collect sociodemographic data and to assess specific psychological variables, namely emotional distress (BDI), impulsive behavior (BIS-11), early relationship with their parents (PBI), life events (LEDS) and alexithymia (TAS-20), the inability to experience and express subjective emotions. Results: Correlational analysis showed that age, paternal parenting behaviors and the number of significant events reported in the past six months are the only variables correlated with treatment dropout. The younger the participants, the most likely they were to dropout of the group therapy. Moreover, men who completed treatment reported fewer difficulties in their life and less autonomy support by their father than men who prematurely terminated their therapy. Discussion: The present findings pose a serious challenge for all actors involved in specifics treatment programs. Indeed, if all individuals who committed violent acts have the same intrapsychic variables, how do we predict, especially retain and motivate, the users likely to dropout? [less ▲]

The exercise of parenthood is threatened by the precarious context in which parents and children live. Precariousness is defined by the lack or the absence of basic securities, such as housing, employment, financial, emotional security, etc. In such a context, the emotional availability of a parent can be reduced, so that the quality of parent-child interactions decreases and multiple dimensions of the child development are impacted. Therefore, policies of prevention and intervention have been developed in order to overcome the difficulties experienced by parents from birth and, sometimes, from pregnancy. However, little is known about the parenting sense of competence of mother living in such a precarious context, and the possible mediating effect of perceived social support. In this study, we investigate parenting sense of competence in a sample of 38 adult mothers raising alone their children in a context of poverty. Subjects completed the French versions of the “Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (P.S.O.C.)” and the “Social Provisions Scale”, and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Results indicate that, in average, mothers report a high parenting sense of competence (μ=69.18), characterized by a high level of self-efficacy (μ=32.76) and an average level of satisfaction (μ=36.42). Mothers also report low perceived social support (T=41, percentile 21). Results also indicate a significant negative correlate between self-efficacy and the need to feel useful and necessary, while the satisfaction dimension is positively correlated with all the perceived social support dimensions, except from the “need to feel useful” dimension. In conclusion, mothers raising alone their children in a context of poverty report high levels of parenting sense of competence. However, withdrawal and isolation are associated with poorer parental satisfaction. This suggests that the social dimension of poverty is a significant aspect to consider in parenting support policies. [less ▲]

Integration between levels of care is not facilitated by the Belgian health system. Indeed, patients have uninhibited access to every level of care, there is no gatekeeping system, and no structural coordination between levels of care. Meanwhile, on one hand, the occurrence of more complex care situations in the ambulatory setting is enhancing the need for coordination while on the other hand, hospitals face financial constraints to provide care in the community. The aim of the research was to organize coordination between levels of care at the local level, in an urban setting. We used the “Local Health System” model (LHS) that aims at integrating hospital and primary care activities for a defined population at the local level. We chose the participatory action research (PAR) methodology and its spiral plan-do-study-act cycles, to ensure the participation and implementation of results by the targeted actors (hospital and local general practitioners (GP) organizations). BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic lung disorder of unknown origin, which ultimately leads to death. Several growth factors such as IGFs (insulin-like-growth factor) and IGFBPs (insulin like growth factor binding proteins) seem to take part to the pathogenesis. We evaluated IGFs and IGFBPs in serum from patients with IPF and healthy subjects including 24 untreated IPF and 26 IPF receiving anti-fibrotic therapy and to compare them with healthy subjects. METHODS: Serum of 50 idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and 55 healthy subjects (HS) were analysed by ELISA for IGFs and IGFBPs, TGF-beta and KL-6, the latter being tested as positive control in IPF. RESULTS: Serum levels of IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-2 and KL-6 were significantly higher in the IPF group than in the healthy subjects (p < 0.05, p < 0.001 and p < 0.0001 respectively) while the picture was inversed regarding IGFs. By contrast there was no significant difference between the groups with respect to TGF-beta. IGFBP-2 was significantly reduced in the patients with specific anti-fibrotic therapy pirfenidone and nintedanib compared to untreated patients (p < 0.05) but still significantly elevated in comparison to HS (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Serum IGFBP-1 and -2 are increased in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and IGFBP-2 may be reduced by anti-fibrosing therapy. IGFBPs may be promising biomarkers in IPF. [less ▲]

Nowadays, in newly built housings, energy losses due to the ventilation can represent up to 50 % of the total building energy consumption. As a result, heat recovery ventilation units are widely used in order to save primary energy and different control strategies for ventilation systems are investigated. For instance, demand control ventilation sounds like a promising solution to decrease the energy impact of the ventilation system in the residential sector. An accurate building model integrating the influence of ventilation (so called thermo-aeraulic building model) is necessary in order to investigate the control and the impact of the ventilation system on a yearly basis. The aim of the present paper consists in a description of a combined multi-zone airflow network model and thermal building model implemented in the Modelica language. The thermal model is a simplified dynamic model using equivalent thermal resistance and capacity. The airflow network is based on the traditional electrical circuit analogy. The model can be used for ventilation systems design, infiltration rate calculation, inside air quality calculation, energy consumption calculation, etc. The first part of the paper details the multi-zone thermal building model. The results obtained from the model are compared to experimental in situ results collected in the typical single family house test facilities. Those experimental results have been obtained in the frame of the IEA-EBC Annex 58. The second part of the paper introduces the multi-zone airflow network building model. Obtained model results are compared with the results provided by a typical multizone airflow analysis software, for a simple three zones test case. The third part of the paper describes the coupling between both thermal and airflow models. The different numerical problems encountered are described and solutions are discussed. [less ▲]

In the last few decades, promising new approaches to the study of the senses and to the body have shed new light on how people in the past experienced their lives, as much as on the ways in which knowledge about self and the world was being shaped, negotiated and transformed. Although all the senses could contribute to these discussions, scholars have predominantly focused on sight and visual cultures, leaving other potentially fruitful avenues unexplored. Touch, especially, has received little attention in historical research, where it has been reduced to a history of sexuality, leaving its other dimensions unexamined. Yet this sense, considered the defining sense of human nature, raises important questions regarding the part played by the lower senses in knowledge production, as well as in society and culture at large. Sources concerning Renaissance anatomy provide a significant lens through which to examine the part played by touch in the early modern study of Nature, as evidenced by the practice of dissections, which engaged the body, the skin and the hand of the anatomists, in their attempt to unveil the truths hidden inside the body. Using theoretical writings (anatomical textbooks) as well as sources more closely linked to daily practices (such as university notes of medical students), this paper seeks to explore the technologies of touch that were displayed in 16th-century anatomical practices and discourses, with the aim of highlighting the epistemological value of the sense of touch in early modern inquiries about Nature and the human body. This paper investigates whether conditional accounting conservatism has informational benefits to financial market participants. Using a large sample of French firms over the period 2001-2014, we report that accounting conservatism improves the firm information environment by providing verifiable information. We specifically document that increases in accounting conservatism are associated with more accurate analyst earnings forecasts, less dispersed forecasts and less volatility in forecast revisions. We also provide evidence that increases in firm accounting conservatism lead to subsequent increases in stock market liquidity, tested on the price impact dimension. Overall, our findings are in line with conservatism being useful to financial markets participants such as financial analysts and investors. [less ▲]

As the size of the device is only one or two orders of magnitude higher than the size of the grains, the structural properties, such as the thermo-elastic quality factor (Q), of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) made of poly- crystalline materials exhibit a scatter, due to the existing randomness in the grain size, grain orientation, surface roughness. In order to predict the probabilistic behavior of micro-resonators, the authors extend herein a previously developed stochastic 3-scale approach to the case of thermoelastic damping. In this method, stochastic volume elements (SVEs) are defined by considering random grain orientations in a tessellation. For each SVE realization, the mesoscopic apparent elasticity tensor, thermal conductivity tensor, and thermal dilatation tensor can be obtained using thermo-mechanical computational homogenization theory. The extracted mesoscopic apparent properties tensors can then be used to define a spatially correlated mesoscale random field, which is in turn used as input for stochastic finite element simulations. As a result, the probabilistic distribution of the quality factor of micro-resonator can be extracted by considering Monte-Carlo simulations of coarse-meshed micro-resonators, accounting implicitly for the random microstructure of the poly-silicon material.
