Background subtraction is usually based on low-level or hand-crafted features such as raw color components, gradients, or local binary patterns. As an improvement, we present a background subtraction algorithm based on spatial features learned with convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). Our algorithm uses a background model reduced to a single background image and a scene-specific training dataset to feed ConvNets that prove able to learn how to subtract the background from an input image patch. Experiments led on 2014 ChangeDetection.net dataset show that our ConvNet based algorithm at least reproduces the performance of state-of-the-art methods, and that it even outperforms them significantly when scene-specific knowledge is considered. Famous since the Odyssey (IV, 229-230) for its drugs, Egypt furnishes the Greek world with some medical substances already mentioned in the hippocratic treatises. Moreover, many Greek drug names have been loaned from the Egyptian language, such as ἄμ(μ)ι for cumin, κίκι for castor-oil, κόμμι for gum, κῦφι for a complex preparation used for fumigation in cult practices, νίτρον for sodium carbonate, στίμμι for galena, σῶρυ for ferrous sulfate, and σάμψ(ο)υχον, for marjoram, whose name means “herb (sem) of Soukhos", another name for the crocodile god Sobek. The trade of drugs, spices and colourants, used in pharmacology, cosmetology, painting, cultual and magical practices, embalming rites and nutrition always flourished in Egypt and has intensified in Hellenistic and Roman times. As a continuation of the research on remedies of Egyptian origin in Greco-Roman pharmacopoeia, this article provides a list of Egyptian ingredients used in Greek and Latin veterinary prescriptions. The use of these substances is compared with recomandations from human medicine. Their availability and costs are also studied. [less ▲]

In this chapter, I give a bird’s eye view of the Brentano School from a rather historical perspective. My leading hypothesis is that one crucial factor explaining the rise of the school is Brentano’s unique strategy, within the academic context of the time, to promote the revival of philosophy as a rigorous science. After a brief introduction, I reconstruct the three main phases in the school’s development, namely Brentano’s teaching in Würzburg (1866-73), his teaching in Vienna (1874-95), and Anton Marty’s teaching in Prague (1880-1913).
