Objective: To compare the strength-duration (S-D) time constants of motor cortex structures activated by current pulses oriented posterior-anterior (PA) or anterior-posterior (AP) across the central sulcus. Methods: Motor threshold and input–output curve, along with motor evoked potential (MEP) latencies, of first dorsal interosseus were determined at pulse widths of 30, 60, and 120 μs using a controllable pulse parameter (cTMS) device, with the coil oriented PA or AP. These were used to estimate the S-D time constant and we compared with data for responses evoked by cTMS of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Results: The S-D time constant with PA was shorter than for AP stimulation (230.9 ± 97.2 vs. 294.2 ± 90.9 us; p<0.001). These values were similar to those calculated after stimulation of ulnar nerve (197 ± 47us). MEP latencies to AP, but not PA stimulation were affected by pulse width, showing longer latencies following short duration stimuli. Conclusion: PA and AP stimuli appear to activate the axons of neurons with different time constants. Short duration AP pulses are more selective than longer pulses in recruiting longer latency corticospinal output. [less ▲]

This volume presents the complete collection of complete pots and profiles (ca. 1800 vessels) dating to the 3rd millennium BC, recovered during the excavations carried out at Tell Beydar during sixteen seasons (from 1992 to 2010). Tell Beydar, located in the syrian Jezirah region was a second rank urban center during the second part of the 3rd millennium BC. The EJZ 3b city has been widely explored by extensive excavations and offered large assemblages of archaeological material. This monograph offers a clear vision of the material culture of the site and allows us to insert it in the cultural landscape of Upper-Mesopotamia during the 3rd millennium BC. [less ▲]

A formulation is proposed in which an AC-DC system is modeled as a combination of AC grids, DC grids, injectors, AC two-ports and AC/DC converters, respectively. This modular modelling facilitates the dynamic simulation of future complex AC/DC systems. Furthermore, it can be exploited by the solver, which performs less operations on components with lower dynamic activity, and offers parallel processing of the time simulation. This approach is illustrated on a test system in which a multi-terminal DC grid connects two asynchronous AC systems, allows frequency support between them, and acts as emergency control against AC voltage instability. Applying the concept of organizational fields within an intra-organizational approach, this chapter traces the issue of ‘environmental migration’ and its institutional location within European Union (EU) structures. It argues that responses have been shaped by security actors within the EU before being integrated into climate change adaptation, regional partnerships and thematic issues vis-à-vis development cooperation in third countries. Moreover, an organizational shift in treating the linkages between environment and climate change and migration belies an institutional change. An accompanying change in modalities of responses may offer promising avenues to address the topic within a fledgling common approach to migration. [less ▲]

A simple method is proposed to identify additional reactive reserves enabling to counteract long-term voltage instability after a large disturbance. In contrast to the many references based on power flow calculations, the method resorts to dynamic simulation. The post-disturbance system evolution is simulated in the presence of time-varying shunt susceptances with specified rate of change. This allows to deal with dynamic issues such as the required speed of the additional reactive power sources, or the onset of unstable electromechanical oscillations. Furthermore, a compromise is sought between the speed of action and the volume of additional compensation. The method is demonstrated on a detailed model of the Nordic test system. [less ▲]
