In this chapter, it is argued that Weber's particular combination of Von Kries' naturalistic paradigm and Rickert's antinaturalistic paradigm might become less puzzling if we return to the interpretation that emerged in the middle of the nineteen-twenties within the South-Western School of neo-Kantianism. The basic intuition which underlies this interpretation is that the social sciences are best understood as generalizing cultural sciences. We consider a mixed integer set which generalizes two well-known sets: the single node fixed- charge network set and the single arc design set. Such set arises as a relaxation of feasible sets of general mixed integer problems such as lot-sizing and network design problems. We derive several families of valid inequalities that, in particular, generalize the arc resid- ual capacity inequalities and the flow cover inequalities. For the constant capacitated case we provide an extended compact formulation and give a partial description of the convex hull in the original space which is exact under a certain condition. By lifting some basic inequalities we provide some insight on the difficulty of obtaining such a full polyhedral description for the constant capacitated case. Preliminary computational results are presented. [less ▲]

It is usual to think of the spectacular development of the Brentano School in Austria as being tied to the rise of a specific research program, which is sometimes dubbed “Austrian phenomenology”. I discuss here some evidences for the existence of such a program. In the discussion, I highlight two claims which I take to be constitutive of the Brentanian phenomenology. The first one is the epistemological claim according to which our concepts all have an empirical origin, which has to be located in the experience we have of our own mental states. The second one is the methodological claim according to which describing a mental phenomenon P is nothing but analysing P, where “analysing P” simply means “distinctly perceiving all the constituents of P”. Although a deeper insight in those two claims would require considerable further investigations, I suggest they should be part of the picture when it comes to adjudicating on the specificity of the Brentanian program. Dans l’une de ses conversations avec Joachim Gasquet sur le sens de sa peinture (et de la peinture en général), Cézanne aborde de front la conception qu’il se fait de la couleur, dans son rapport à la profondeur picturale et de son articulation à la surface : « La nature n'est pas en surface ; elle est en profondeur. Les couleurs sont l'expression, à cette surface, de cette profondeur. Elles montent des racines du monde ». Cet « organisme de couleurs » que constitue le monde est transcrit dans la peinture de Cézanne par une dynamique symbiotique de la couleur et du dessin, de la ligne et du pan. La couleur restitue, par sa masse, son surgissement, son homogénéité, presque sa viscosité, la véritable chaire perceptive du monde ; une vision qui tient à distance la perspective géométrique, photographique, cinématographique fondée sur la transparence et qui repose, comme le signale Merleau-Ponty, sur la « réversibilité des dimensions » (surface-profondeur) et l’entrelacement des choses. C’est cette épaisseur du visible rendu par la couleur que l’économie de l’image numérique nous permet de redécouvrir, moins dans le registre de la « tactilité » de l’image et la picturalité du pixel, que par l’intégration, entre le support et l’image (parfois indiscernables dans le régime optique), d’un « corps » algorithmique qui règle l’actualisation du visible. Certains défauts techniques du dispositif numérique, aujourd’hui élevés au rang de pratique artistique, permettent de révéler cette matrice qui utilise alors la couleur et la coulure comme mode de visibilité. C’est le cas du Datamoshing, technique de composition numérique qui revisite tout en la radicalisant la pratique de l’incrustation vidéo. Basée sur la perturbation volontaire d’éléments de la matrice, cette technique transforme les couleurs en une forme malléable et fluide révélant ainsi leur double nature spatiale : elles sont à la fois dans l’espace de l’image et l’espace de l’image lui-même. Ces expériences de défigurations d’images s’inscrivent dans le registre des « aberrations chromatiques » dont nous proposons ici une rapide généalogie avant d’interroger la couleur digitale dans ses spécificités. The 45th International Liege Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics (http://modb.oce.ulg.ac.be/colloquium/) gathered two hundreds scientists from around the world to discuss new insights related to the evaluation of primary production at various spatial and temporal scales and in different regions of the world ocean (e.g. the polar and sea-ice region, the coastal and the deep ocean). Over the past two decades, substantial efforts were deployed to evaluate oceanic primary production. These efforts include in situ measurements of uptake rates using isotopic techniques, remote sensing, autonomous instrumentation for bio-optics, carbon or oxygen measurements, and the development of semi-empirical to complex biogeochemical models. The colloquium presented the opportunity to review the current knowledge in the estimation of primary production, and to assess the impact of physical processes on ocean productivity. Particular attention focused on the importance of physical processes at different spatial and temporal scales for controlling the level and variability of primary production and on the development of adequate methodologies to tackle this variability in order to derive large-scale, climate-driven budgets. Refined biogeochemical models considering for instance phytoplankton physiology, the representation of variable elemental stoichiometric ratios, the role of mixotrophy as well as satellite algorithms that are now able to simulate the plankton functional types are good candidates for scaling up. Contributions dealing with the difficult issue of interoperability of in-situ, satellite and modelling estimates of primary production were presented. Background: Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) affects performance and well-being in horses. Diagnosis is primarily reached by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytology but this is invasive and requires sedation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify candidate blood biomarkers of IAD using species-specific expression microarrays. Methods: Horse Gene Expression Microarrays were used to investigate global mRNA expression in circulating leukocytes from healthy and IAD-affected standardbreds and endurance horses. Results: Nine genes were significantly differentially regulated in standardbreds and 61 in endurance horses (P < 0.001). These genes were mainly related to inflammation (eg. ALOX15B, PLA2G12B and PENK), oxidant/antioxidant balance (eg. DUOXA2 and GSTO1-1) and stress (eg. V1aR, GRLF1, Homer-2 and MAOB). DUOXA2, ALOX15B, PLA2G12B, MAOB and GRLF1 variations of expression were further validated by RT-qPCR. The deregulation of the oxidant/antioxidant balance was demonstrated at the protein level by an increase of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in heparinised whole blood of IAD-affected standardbreds (P = 0.0025) and endurance horses (P = 0.0028). There was good correlation (r = 0.7354) between BAL neutrophil percentage and whole blood GPx activity in all horses. Conclusions: There is accumulating evidence that, even when systemic clinical signs are not evident, circulating leukocyte gene expression can reflect responses of other tissues, leading to potential diagnostic applications in the future. Although not specific for IAD, whole blood GPx activity appears to reflect BAL neutrophil percentage. This finding should be further assessed by testing a larger number of horses. [less ▲]

BACKGROUND: Single cell biology has attracted a lot of attention these past few years and has led to numerous fundamental results pointing out the heterogeneity of clonal cell populations. In this context, microbial phenotypic heterogeneity under bioprocessing conditions needs to be further investigated. In this study, yeast based processes have been investigated by using on-line flow cytometry in combination with a fluorescent transcriptional reporter (GFP) and viability fluorescence tags (propidium iodide, PI). Methods aiming at expressing the dispersion of these fluorescence tags among the yeast populations have been investigated for different bioreactor operating conditions. RESULTS: Yeast viability was determined on the basis of PI uptake. Segregation between PI negative and positive subpopulations could be efficiently quantified on the basis of the mean-to-median ratio or the amplitude of the interquartile range. On the other hand, the same quantification could not be made for the segregation occurring at the level of GFP synthesis. Indeed, when cells were exposed to sub-lethal or mild stresses (such as in scale-down reactors) two GFP subpopulations could be visualized by real-time FC, but quantification by one of the above-mentioned methods was not possible. CONCLUSIONS: Yeast population heterogeneity was observed in representative bioreactor operating conditions. Difficulties for the determination of segregation at the level of GFP synthesis point out the fact that one needs to understand the segregation mechanisms for the applied fluorescent reporters, to judge whether simple mathematical tools may be applied or if more sophisticated computational tools are needed for the quantification of the microbial population segregation.
