Architects express themselves graphically in order to communicate ideas both to clients and to themselves. In practice, they rely on a variety of representations such as free-hand drawings, 3D computer rendered images, and photomontages to convey their design intent. Research to date has demonstrated differences and commonalities in the ways in which expert designers and laymen perceive visual understanding. It is still unclear how architects themselves use different types of representations to express different intentions, and how accurately their expected audience perceives those intentions. The purpose of this research is to investigate how laymen interpret the initial design intent of an architect’s design, and what role different forms of representations play in this process of understanding a design. This paper describes a five-step process for developing a survey that was used to gather data from 686 laymen respondents. It was found that certain types of simpler representations presented in specific contexts are unexpectedly found to be a more efficient way to faithfully transmit an architectural intent. [less ▲]

The terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene, a period from 15 000 to 18 000 Before Present (BP), was critical in establishing the current Holarctic fauna, with temperate-climate species largely replacing cold-adapted ones at midlatitudes. However, the timing and nature of this process remain unclear for many taxa, a point that impacts on current and future management strategies. Here, we use an ancient DNA dataset to test more directly postglacial histories of the water vole (Arvicola amphibius, formerly A. terrestris), a species that is both a conservation priority and a pest in different parts of its range. We specifically examine colonization of Britain, where a complex genetic structure can be observed today. Although we focus on population history at the limits of the species’ range, the inclusion of additional European samples allows insights into European postglacial colonization events and provides a molecular perspective on water vole taxonomy.

The use of Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a fast and non-destructive technique was employed for moisture content (MC) determination in Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) in replacement to Karl Fischer (KF) method. The lab analysis of ADCs, high potent medicines, should be performed in conditions ensuring the operator’s safety and using secured analytical tools like NIRS. A NIRS method was first developed and validated in compliance with current guidelines. The novelty of this work first lies in the large number of samples prepared for a wide moisture calibration range of 0.51% to 4.01%. Then, the classical Partial Least Square (PLS) regression was used as chemometric tool for the computation of the model. Excellent predictive calibration results were shown. A coefficient of correlation (r) value of 0.99 was obtained. An intercept value of 0.02 and a slope of 0.99 were observed, while the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) were respectively 0.10% and 0.12%. In addition, instrumentation, model performances and robustness of the method were evaluated, demonstrating the validation results. Calibration transfer issue and impact of the number of samples were also evaluated. Consequently, a validation strategy was introduced as a basis for submission to the health authorities’ for release and stability activities in a cGMP environment in replacement of the KF method. The physiological role of the gastrointestinal microbiota has become an important subject of nutrition research in pigs in the past years, and the importance of intestinal microbial activity in the etiology of disease is doubtless. This review summarizes the recent knowledge related to the microbial ecology of protein fermentation and the appearance of protein-derived metabolites along the pig intestine. The amount of fermentable protein depends on factors such as dietary protein concentration, protein digestibility due to secondary or tertiary structure, the interaction with dietary compounds or anti-nutritional factors, and the secretion of endogenous proteins into the gut lumen. High protein diets increase the luminal concentrations and epithelial exposure to putatively toxic metabolites and increase the risk for post-weaning diarrhea, but the mechanisms are not yet clarified. Although the use of fermentable carbohydrates to reduce harmful protein-derived metabolites in pigs is well-established, recent studies suggest that the inclusion of fermentable carbohydrates into diets with low protein digestibility or high dietary protein level may not ameliorate all negative effects with regard to epithelial response. Based on the current knowledge, the use of diets with low levels of high-quality protein may help to reduce the risk for intestinal disease in young pigs. [less ▲]

This paper aims at analysing the work of prison management teams. Working in organizations that are mainly "auto-regulated" by prison guards, governors’ teams have to cope, for the last fifteen years, with a heightened control exercised by the central administration. This “regulation of control” (Reynaud, 1988) is inter alia justified by the endemic phenomenon of overcrowding and the increasing interdependency between prisons and their environment. Despite the constraints implied by these shifts, prison governors preserve some autonomy through two types of deliberative practice allowing them to influence - marginally and ethically – prison organizations and policies. The first one, called practical wisdom or prudence (Champy, 2012), lies in the subtle bypass of the rules in uncertain situations; the second one, called cunning, or ruse (Lécu, 2013), consists in denouncing the hypocrisy of some political discourses with the help of some external partners. This contribution investigates the syntactic conceptions of, and the diagramming system introduced by, the American grammarian Stephen Watkins Clark (1847), who introduced the first comprehensive syntactic diagramming system. The structure of the English sentence is illustrated by agglutinated “bubbles” expressing the relations between words by the means of their relative position. The sentence consists of two or three horizontally aligned bubbles containing words that are called principal elements. These principal elements can be complemented with adjunct elements, that appear in bubbles attached below them. For grammatical words the conventions differ depending on whether the grammatical word is a preposition or a conjunction. Coordination is never named as such, but there is an orthogonal abstract relation that connects elements performing the same role in a “compound” construction. The system allows recursiveness in two different ways: by wrapping bubbles into other bubbles, thus following a mereological logic (part- whole relations) close to IC analysis or by hierarchically aggregating bubbles that resemble dependency trees. Clark's conceptions thus prefigure modern graphical formalizations. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Despite a rapid growth and an ongoing need for outplacement services, little is yet known about the perceived adequacy and benefits of these services for redundant employees using them. We surveyed 360 Belgian redundant employees (i.e., clients) using outplacement services provided by a public employment agency. The results indicate that an outplacement experience perceived as adequate for clients fosters their overall impressions of justice towards the dismissing organization; this leads in turn to benefits for them: reduction of negative emotions, enhancement of their perceived well-being, future perspectives, and job-seeking activities - confirming the mediating role of overall justice. Acer negundo (boxelder maple) is a North American native tree species that currently invades riparian and disturbed areas in Europe, affecting both bank stability and ecosystem biodiversity. As a response to managers’ requests, we aimed at finding an eco-friendly method which would locally remove this species and help habitat restoration. Four control methods were tested on A. negundo adults and saplings from stands located in three experimental sites along different watercourses in Southwestern France: girdling, low cutting, high cutting, and cutting followed by the application of juglone (a natural allelopathic substance from walnut tree leaves). Mortality and resprout production on the treated A. negundo individuals were assessed during two years following the application of the control methods. Girdling was the most efficient method as it significantly induced higher mortality rates compared to the others (65 vs 15% of dead A. negundo two years after treatment administration). When healing emerged on trunks, yearly repeated girdling was required to reach full success. None of the control methods significantly reduced resprout production; not even the application of juglone. Girdling is the most recommended method to kill and remove A. negundo at a local scale in invaded natural habitats. Considering that A. negundo benefits from increases in light availability to outcompete native species, we further recommend removing seedlings from understories when applying girdling on adult and sapling individuals in order to optimize restoration conditions in natural stands and improve native species re-establishment.
