Proteomic approach was applied to identify total proteins, particularly the enzymatic content, from wild cardoon flowers. As the selection of an appropriate sample preparation method is the key for getting reliable results, two different extraction/precipitation methods (trichloroacetic acid and phenol/ammonium acetate) were tested on fresh and lyophilized flowers. After two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D–E) separations, a better protein pattern was obtained after phenol extraction from lyophilized flowers. Only 46 % of the total analyzed spots resulted in a protein identification by mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF. Four proteases (cardosins A, E, G, and H), which have become a subject of great interest in dairy technology, were identified. They presented molecular weights and isoelectric points very close and high levels of homology between matched peptides sequences. The absence of the other cardosins (B, C, D, and F) could be an advantage, as it reduces the excessive proteolytic activity that causes bitter flavors and texture defects, during cheese making. This report is a policy analysis of legislation on employee sharing and how it is practised in Belgium. More specifically it focuses on groupement d’employeurs/werkgeversgroeperingen, or employer groups. The report discusses the main features and characteristics of the legislation introduced, the actual organisation and implementation of employer groups and their outcomes, as well as their key strengths and weaknesses and potential for transferability. The report is based on available literature and documents about employee sharing and interviews with a variety of stakeholders. This report is also complemented by findings from a case study on an employer group in Wallonia carried out as part of this project – see case study 3: Job’Ardent. [less ▲]

This book covers all aspects of hemicelluloses and lignin including structure, biosynthesis, extraction, biodegradation, and conversion. Fixité et mouvement coexistent fréquemment dans l’imagerie antique. Les Blattmasken en sont la parfaite illustration, car ils se caractérisent à la fois par une frontalité presque exemplaire et par un dynamisme végétal insufflé par les feuilles dont ils sont composés. Les quatre exemples choisis pour illustrer ce propos correspondent chacun à une formule particulière d’intégration des têtes végétalisées dans leur environnement immédiat. Celles-ci peuvent en effet être isolées de tout contexte végétal, intégrées dans un décor de rinceaux, ou encore structurellement liées à celui-ci en lui donnant naissance ou en émergeant de l’une de ses volutes. Cette forme de végétalisation de la figure humaine semble se rattacher à une hybridation plutôt qu’à une métamorphose. Cette fusion des règnes humain et végétal révèle une symbolique complexe qu’il conviendra de préciser. [less ▲]

La Blattmaske ou tête végétalisée est un motif romain apparu au Ier siècle apr. J.-C. Elle ne cessa d’être utilisée dans l’univers des formes , et donc de se renouveler. Mais il est un milieu qui constitue un jalon important dans l’histoire de son utilisation : la Rome de l’époque carolingienne. Après une rupture de près de quatre siècles dans la mise en oeuvre italique du motif, le remploi de fragments du temple de Sol Invictus semble en effet être à l’origine d’un certain regain d’intérêt pour le sujet dans des églises romaines du IXe siècle. Bien qu’il ne soit pas toujours aisé de distinguer des originaux antiques spoliés, parfois retravaillés, de créations médiévales, l’examen des fragments et de leur contexte permet de préciser leur origine et leur signification. Bernardo Dovizi, one of the most famous secretaries of the early Italian Reinassance, is best known for his literary works and for being the patron of Raffaello rather than for his endeavors in diplomacy. By deciding to follow the interests of Giovanni de’ Medici, Dovizi made some poor political decisions in his career but, in spite of this, he cunningly managed to get his patron become the Pope. The "Calandra" is a work that depicts well the author’s ideas, in between parody and classicism. From his works, Epistolario and Ricordi, it appears that the main strength of Dovizi is his irony, through which he manages to become almost an accomplice with his patron. Alongside with the iconological choice of the frescoes of his Stufetta and Loggia in the Vatican, he assumes the posture of the secretary-jester, as it was portrayed by Baldassarre Castiglione in "The Book of the Courtier": the satyr that washes into the room, used as bathroom, corresponds to the most famous pose of the patron who insists on these burlesque and mocking characteristics, although relating to Ovid and Plato. Bibbiena seems to be aware of how much the man that exceeds in praise himself appears unbearable, therefore, in his relations with members of the ruling class, he often assumes a playful attitude. In the Rome of Leo X, because of the Socratic 'serio ludere', such attitude was accepted and admired. The best instruments of Bibbiena are the pleasantness and a careful selection of humanistic ideals. Such ideals were those that suited better the environment in which he, the courtier, had to operate, and were used in his works. [less ▲]

Blattmasken belong to vegetalized human figures used in parietal decoration of nymphaei and domestic ponds. Their use depends on the process of iconographic forms’ transmission already highlighted between the parietal mosaic, the italic mural painting of Ist century a.C. and the African ground mosaic. This transfer is discussed in the light of two cases : the House of Neptune and Amphitrite at Herculanum and the House of the Nymphs at Neapolis. The study is based on their iconographical environments and on their typology. It highlights two different symbolic conceptions of the motive. [less ▲]
