Ichthyosaurs rapidly diversified and colonised a wide range of ecological niches during the Early and Middle Triassic period, but experienced a major decline in diversity near the end of the Triassic. Timing and causes of this demise and the subsequent rapid radiation of the diverse, but less disparate, parvipelvian ichthyosaurs are still unknown, notably because of inadequate sampling in strata of latest Triassic age. Here, we describe an exceptionally large radius from Lower Jurassic deposits at Penarth near Cardiff, South Wales (UK) the morphology of which places it within the giant Triassic shastasaurids. A tentative total body size estimate, based on a regression analysis of various complete ichthyosaur skeletons, yields a value of 12-15 m. The specimen is substantially younger than any previously reported last known occurrences of shastasaurids and implies a Lazarus range in the lowermost Jurassic for this ichthyosaur morphotype. Populations considered for shoulder analysis are often composed of various ratios of men and women. It is consequently hypothesized that gender has no significant effect on the joint kinematic. However the literature reports, for the shoulder, differences in the range of motion between genders. The specific influence of gender on the scapula-thoracic kinematics has not been studied yet. The dominant shoulder of two populations of men and women composed of 11 subjects each were evaluated in three dimensions for three distinct motions: flexion in the sagittal plane, abduction in the frontal plane and gleno-humeral internal/external rotation with the arm abducted at 90°. Posture, kinematics and range of motion were studied separately. For flexion and abduction and with regard to the scapular kinematic, external rotation were significantly larger for women than men. The differences were of at least 5° at 120° of humeral elevation. Upward rotations were identical. Women also showed larger average active humero-thoracic range of motion. The mean differences were of 13°, 7°, 12° and 5° for abduction, flexion, internal rotation and external rotation, respectively. No difference was observed between the scapular resting positions of both populations. The observed differences concerning both the scapular and humeral patterns would indicate that the shoulder behavior of men and women should not be expected to be similar. [less ▲]

The KDIGO guidelines propose a new approach to diagnose chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on estimated glomerular ®ltration rate (GFR). In patients with a GFR value comprised between 45 and 59 mL/ min/1.73m2 as estimated by the CKD-EPI creatinine equation (eGFRcreat), it is suggested to con®rm the diagnosis with a second estimation using the CKD-EPI cystatin C-based equations (eGFRcys/eGFRcreat-cys). We sought to determine whether this new diagnostic strategy might extend to kidney transplant recipients (KTR) and help to identify those with decreased GFR. In 670 KTR for whom a measured GFR was available, we simulated the detection of CKD using the two-steps approach recommended by the guidelines in comparison to the conventional approach relying on creatinine equation. One hundred forty-®ve patients with no albuminuria had eGFRcreat between 45 and 59 mL/ min/1.73m2. Among them, 23% had inulin clearance over 60 mL/min/1.73m2 and were thus incorrectly classi®ed as CKD patients. When applying the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) strategy, 138 patients were con®rmed as having a GFR below 60 mL/min with eGFRcreat-cys. However, 21% of them were misclassi®ed in reference to measured GFR. Our data do no not support the use of cystatin C as a con®rmatory test of stage 3A CKD in KTR. [less ▲]

Plants have a long evolutionary history, during which mass extinction events dramatically affected Earth’s ecosystems and its biodiversity. The fossil record can shed light on the diversi- fication dynamics of plant life and reveal how changes in the origination–extinction balance have contributed to shaping the current flora. We use a novel Bayesian approach to estimate origination and extinction rates in plants throughout their history. We focus on the effect of the ‘Big Five’ mass extinctions and on estimating the timing of origin of vascular plants, seed plants and angiosperms. Our analyses show that plant diversification is characterized by several shifts in origination and extinction rates, often matching the most important geological boundaries. The estimated origin of major plant clades predates the oldest macrofossils when considering the uncertainties associated with the fossil record and the preservation process. Our findings show that the commonly recognized mass extinctions have affected each plant group differently and that phases of high extinction often coincided with major floral turnovers. For instance, after the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary we infer negligible shifts in diversification of non-flowering seed plants, but find significantly decreased extinction in spore-bearing plants and increased origination rates in angiosperms, contributing to their current ecological and evolutionary dominance. The Fair Trade and co-operative movements have much in common. This chapter aims to examine the convergences and divergences between the two fields, highlighting what they can learn from each other and how practitioners and researchers in the two areas can better collaborate. Fair trade is an innovative approach to economic development that uses a market-driven approach to exploit the growing trend in ethical, or caused-based, consumption (Nicholls & Opal 2005). Fair Trade organizations aim to re-engineer the value chains between poor producers and artisans - typically in developing countries - and their wholesale buyers such that a greater proportion of the overall rents accrue to those who provide the inputs. Put simply, Fair Trade aims to ensure that the poorest actors in a supply chain benefit from more of the overall financial value creation as a development tool. Moreover, Fair Trade reconnects producers and consumers at the point of purchase such that consumption becomes a political – or, at least, life style – choice. This chapter is structured as follows. After this introduction, the second section describes the development of Fair Trade from its historical roots to the current organizational landscape and market organization. Next there is a discussion of several key issues and challenges that have emerged as Fair Trade has become increasingly institutionalized. Then, the fourth section explores the relationship between Fair Trade and the co-operative and mutual movements. Finally, conclusions serve to sum up the chapter. [less ▲]
