We revisit the limit on very light axion-like particles (ALPs) from the absence of gamma rays coincidental with the neutrino burst from SN1987A. We use updated supernova simulations, modern models for the magnetic field inside the Galaxy, and a Primakoff cross section which takes into account proton-degeneracy and mass-reduction effects. We finally give an updated exclusion plot for the electromagnetic coupling of sub-eV ALPs, comparing our new bound with other limits as well as with future ALP searches. [less ▲]

The article is a retranslation attempt of a Cameroon Fulani 'Mbooku' poem previously transcribed from oral material and translated into English by the Japanese scholar Paul K. Eguchi in 1992. It aims at showing how (re)translation is important for such 'endangered' literature like African oral poems. Moreover, it contributes in introducing primary oral literature to the field of translation studies. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Iñigo de Brizuela and Andrés de Soto, both confessors of the Archdukes were key figures at Brussels' court. Each of them used to influence the policy, using different bias. But they weren't trying to reach similar goals: Brizuela carefully acted to preserve Spanish interests in the Catholic Netherlands, while de Soto struggled for a Catholic victory. Their political actions and its reasons will be covered by this paper. [less ▲]

This paper is about a series of experimental fire tests on eight full scale steel columns made of slender I shaped class 4 sections. Six columns were made of welded sections (some prismatic and some tapered members) and two columns were made of hot rolled sections. The nominal length of the columns was 2.7 meters with the whole length being heated. The load was applied at ambient temperature after which the temperature was increased under constant load. The load was applied concentrically on some tests and with an eccentricity in other tests. Heating was applied by electrical resistances enclosed in ceramic pads. Numerical simulations were performed with the software SAFIR® using shell elements. The paper presents the results obtained in terms of failure mode and ultimate temperature, in the experimental tests and in the numerical simulations. [less ▲]

We use various economic and pedagogical concepts to understand the specificities of MOOC (Massive Online Open Courses) platforms. We discuss how the private provision of MOOCs can be sustained. Using the theory of multisided platforms, we analyze five ways to monetize the MOOC business. We then claim that MOOC platforms can play a key transformative role in the higher education sector by making teaching practices evolve, rather than by replacing incumbent institutions. Finally, we derive a number of directions for public policy [less ▲]

The paper first distinguishes ritual action for sovereigns, which integrates the honoured rulers at a practical level within the religious life of a community, from other, more discrete configurations of the relation between royal and divine power. Among these trends, focus is on the rhetorical and spectacular dimension of wonder. The strategies of wonder-making are first studied in theory through paradoxography, then the categories of grandeur, exoticism and technical excellence are identified in action in Alexandrian religious life and festivals. Master of an empire with universal claims and collector of everything that is beautiful, rare and precious in the world, the king distances himself from his subjects in order to make his superior status explicit. Distance is, however, only the premise for the king to manifest himself to the great public through epiphanies that can be compared with those of divine power. The paper also discusses the way the conformism of court elites not only satisfied their own need to claim for distinguished social status, but also helped royal message spread and caused loyalty to it.
