Even if insect pest populations can be reduced by increasing plant diversity through intercropping, natural enemies are not always favored in such systems. Alternatively, semiochemical substances have been tested to enhance biological control, with inconsistent results. Combining both strategies can be an interesting way to maximize pest control. In this work, a 2-year setup involving wheat–pea strip intercropping combined with the release of E-b-farnesene (EBF) or methyl salicylate (MeSA) was tested as a push–pull strategy to simultaneously repel aphids and attract beneficials. Two types of slow-release formulation (i.e., oil and alginate beads) containing EBF or MeSA were deployed with the intercropping. The abundance of aphids was significantly decreased, while hoverfly larvae and mummified aphids increased on both pea plants and wheat tillers by the release of oil-formulated EBF and MeSA. The proportion parasitism of the aphid-parasitism rate [mummies/(aphids + mummies)] was also increased by treating both crops in both years. Releasing EBF through oil rather than alginate beads proved significantly better for attracting natural enemies and reducing aphids. Aphids were negatively correlated with the density of hoverflies (both adults and larvae) and numbers of mummies. All these results showed that combining intercropping with the release of EBF or MeSA formulated in oil can significantly reduce aphid density and attract their natural enemies. Therefore, the combination of both strategies could help farmers reduce the use of insecticides. [less ▲]

A nitrogen (N) balance digestion trial was conducted to determine the protein requirement of collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu). In a 4 × 4 Latin square design, four captive adult male peccaries were fed four isoenergy diets containing four different levels of N (11.7, 16.3, 22.8, and 26.7 g N/kg of dry matter—DM). After 15 days of adaptation, a total collection of feces and urine was carried out for five consecutive days. Regression analyses between N intake and N in feces and urine allowed to calculate the metabolic fecal nitrogen (MFN = 2.3 g N/kg of dry matter intake—DMI) and daily endogenous urinary N (EUN = 185 mg N/kg0.75). Likewise, by regression analyses between consumption of nitrogen and the nitrogen balance (NB = N ingested − N excreted, mg N/kg0.75), a daily requirement of 514 mg N/kg0.75 was calculated. Therefore, if food intake is unrestricted, collared peccaries require a minimumin their diet of about 5.4% crude protein on DM basis. These values are almost as low as those found for browsing and frugivorous wild ruminants, which reinforce the proposition that peccaries’ digestive physiology is nearer to that of domestic and wild ruminants than domestic pigs. This relatively low protein requirement of collared peccary and its great ability to digest protein reveal the relevance of the forestomach for the species on nitrogen/protein metabolism and allow the use of diets with lower crude protein levels than the commercial ones used for the domestic pig, which reduces feed costs. This paper presents a novel search algorithm using time-domain simulations to identify plausible N-k contingencies endangering voltage stability. Starting from an initial list of disturbances, progressively more severe contingencies are investigated. After simulation of a N-k contingency, the simulation results are assessed. If the system response is unstable, a plausible harmful contingency sequence has been found. Otherwise, components affected by the contingencies are considered as candidate next event leading to N-(k+1) contingencies. This implicitly takes into account hidden failures of component protections. The performance of the proposed search algorithm is compared to a brute-force algorithm and demonstrated on the IEEE Nordic test system. [less ▲]

Located in the 'inner periphery' of Neapolitan historic center, at the foot of Capodimonte Park, historically the urban fabric of San Carlo Arena district eastern area has developed around two architectural complexes: Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Croci, for a long time aggregation places for local people. In addition, the ‘lava dei Vergini’ phenomenon, which periodically flooded the area outside the ancient city walls and the ‘for a via’ street (Via Foria), created optimal conditions for tuff extraction, used for local construction. In the past, physical features, such as the irregularity of the hilly area modeled by natural agents, the presence of several underground quarries, the grandeur of remarkable architectural presence, the numerous alleys in a heavily layered historical fabric, and the peculiarities of the social life that took place beyond Foria, have been a source of inspiration for several and also internationally renowned artists. The original identity of the ancient outer suburb, born from progressive expansions of the neighboring villages outside the city walls, is still marked. The closing elements that caracterize the architecture - in particular building fronts -, reflect its inhabitants attitudes and daily life. In this historic urban landscape 'shred’, this closure - despite the direct proximity to the adjacent old town and several, but not easily accessible, panoramic views of part of Naples Bay - continues to be one of the main identifying characters of the area. Although, for many centuries, this has allowed the 'spirit of places’ conservation, it has been transformed into a voluntary closure against the legality, which led to today serious state of neglect and social decay. Sometimes it is possible to find an excessive and illegal man-soil interaction, and unlawful activities influence and define some features of historical buildings in the area. However, for some years the local population has become aware of the existing problems by operating in a more concrete way, through different kinds of associations and volunteer that try to face the territory needs and emergencies. The goal is the elaboration of an update overview of the existing dynamics in this part of urban tissue and the identification of elements to take into account for possible enhancement perspectives in respect of an identity between invariant and processing factors. The publication of the book Nani in Festa. Iconografia, religione e politica in Ostia durante il secondo triumvirato (C. Bocherens ed., Edipuglia, 2012) was the occasion to highlight the exceptional decorative system of the “Domus aux Bucranes” and, especially, to put forward the frieze of dwarfs and its interpretation. With the discovery of these paintings, in the œcus, we have discovered a remarkable collection of stuccos, until today remains unpublished. This article gives a first description and an initial analysis of the fragments of stucco. Their placement on the wall and their relationship with pavements, frescoes and painted ceilings are studied, as well as the iconography they carrying, in close relation with the context of the domus, and, more generally, with Ostia in the late-republican period. The synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), a protein essential to the proper nervous system function, is found in presynaptic vesicles. Thus, SV2A targeting, using dedicated radiotracers combined with positron emission tomography (PET), allows the assessment of synaptic density in the living brain. The first-in-class fluorinated SV2A specific radioligand, [18F]UCB-H, is now available at high-activity through an efficient radiosynthesis compliant with the current good manufacturing practices (cGMP). We report here a non-invasive method to quantify [18F]UCB-H binding in rat brain with microPET. Validation study in rats confirmed the need of high enantiomeric purity to target SV2A in vivo. We demonstrated the reliability of a population-based input function to quantify SV2A in preclinical microPET setting. Finally, we investigated the in vivo metabolism of [18F]UCB-H and confirmed the negligible amount of radiometabolites in the rat brain. Hence, the in vivo quantification of SV2A using [18F]UCB-H microPET seems a promising tool for the assessment of the synaptic density in the rat brain, and opens the way for longitudinal follow-up in neurodegenerative diseases rodents’ models.
