Chacun sait que chez les anciens Grecs, Crésus passait pour un roi richissime à la tête d’un des plus puissants royaumes de son temps. En apportaient la preuve ses nombreuses offrandes consacrées au sanctuaire de Delphes, visibles de tous. L’épisode de sa mort sur un bûcher, un des moments les plus dramatiques de son existence, fut évoqué par nombre d’auteurs anciens et elle a fait l’objet de représentations figurées tout au long de l’Antiquité. Enfin, il ne faut pas oublier que pour un Grec du VIe siècle, l’homme passait pour constituer comme un rempart infranchissable protégeant les cités grecques de la côte d’Asie Mineure contre la puissance montante des Perses de Cyrus II le Grand. Ainsi la défaite inattendue du roi lydien face aux troupes perses en Ptérie constitue-t-elle un épisode décisif de l’époque archaïque grecque dans la mesure où elle signe la fin prochaine du royaume lydien et de son formidable maître. Les cités grecques d’Asie Mineure allaient vite devoir face à leur destin : une soumission aux Perses puis leur révolte entraînant les terribles guerres médiques. Dans notre exposé, on mettra l’accent sur les causes de cette bataille décisive perdue par Crésus à Ptérie, sur son déroulement et ses enjeux à la lumière des sources à notre disposition. On sera amené à analyser le tracé de la Route royale empruntée par le dernier descendant de Gygès pour se rendre en Cappadoce ; on aura ainsi l’occasion de voir que son existence est bien antérieure à l’arrivée des Perses en Anatolie occidentale. Enfin notre exposé présentera la localisation exacte de la ville de Ptérie, une question débattue depuis longtemps mais que des fouilles archéologiques récentes ont permis d’éclairer. [less ▲]

The cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry can arise from the baryon number conserving CP asymmetry in two body decays of heavy particles, when the two final states carry equal and opposite baryon number, and one couples directly or indirectly to electroweak sphalerons so that its baryon asymmetry gets partly reprocessed into a lepton asymmetry, while the other remains chemically decoupled from the thermal bath with its baryon content frozen. After sphaleron switchoff the decay of the decoupled particles inject in the thermal plasma an unbalanced baryon asymmetry, giving rise to baryogenesis. We highlight the features of this mechanism in a type-I seesaw model extended by adding a new colored scalar coupled to the heavy Majorana neutrinos. If the colored scalar has an O(TeV) mass, it would leave at the LHC a characteristic signature throughout all layers of the detectors. [less ▲]

DNA oligomers are promising building blocks for the development of bottom-up nano-devices and molecular logic machines. To control and exploit their unique capabilities of self-assembling and molecular recognition a deep understanding of their dynamical properties is essential. We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a DNA dodecamer and its complexes with two common ligands, Hoechst33258 and the ethidium cation, by means of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We study the structural relation between the flexibility of the double helix and the binding process. The dynamics of a terminal base pair unbinding is also analysed as an example of process that involves multiple energy minima in the underlying free energy landscape. [less ▲]

The aim of “HSS-SERF” project was to investigate and evaluate the seismic performance of dual-steel building frames, realized from two different steel grades: Mild Carbon Steel (MCS) and High Strength Steel (HSS). A comprehensive set of dual-steel frames (moment resisting, concentrically and eccentrically braced) were designed, which allowed the identification of realistic member sizes for both MCS and HSS components. Several practical solutions for bolted and welded beam-to-column joints were identified and designed. Further, an extensive numerical program was carried out for the seismic performance evaluation of frames. The ductility and over-strength demands, and q-factors associated with different performance levels were evaluated. Furthermore, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on joint assemblies and components. Guidelines were elaborated for the conceptual design and PBD of dual-steel frames under seismic actions, and the technical and economic efficiency of dualsteel structures vs. conventional ones were finally evaluated. The main outcomes of the project consist in: (i) development and characterisation in terms of global ductility and over-strength demands of dual-steel frames with composite columns (innovative solutions in European context); (ii) development of design recommendations; (iii) proposal of innovative solutions for beam-to-column joints with composite columns; (iv) recommendation for weld details and appropriate component method design approaches; (v) evaluation of technical and economic efficiency of the dual-steel approach. Recent events such as natural catastrophes or terrorism attacks have highlighted the necessity to ensure the structural integrity of buildings under an exceptional event. According to Eurocodes and some other national design codes, the structural integrity of civil engineering structures should be guaranteed through appropriate measures and one way to guarantee it is to ensure an appropriate robustness of the structure, which may be defined as the ability of a structure to remain globally stable in case of exceptional event leading to local damages. However, although global design approaches are provided in modern codes and standards, no easy-to-apply practical guidelines are provided. The present paper reflects recent researches realised at the University of Liege with the scope of proposing such practical guidelines for the activation of alternative load path in the structure, design strategy generally leading to the most economical solutions. Mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD) or umbilical cord blood (UCB) can be chosen as alternative donors for allogeneic stem cell transplantation but might be associated with long lasting immune deficiency. Sixty-six patients who underwent a first transplantation from either UCB or 9/10 MMUD (n= 36) and who survived beyond 3 months were evaluated. Immune reconstitution was prospectively assessed at sequential time points after transplantation. NK, B, CD4+ and CD8+T cells and their subsets as well as regulatory T cells (Treg) were studied. Detailed analyses on infections occurring after 3 months were also assessed. The 18-month cumulative incidences of infection-related death were 8 and 3%, and of infections were 72 and 57% after MMUD and UCB transplantation, respectively. Rates of infection per 12 patient-month were roughly 2 overall (1 for bacterial, 0.9 for viral and 0.3 for fungal infections). Memory, naïve CD4+ and CD8+T cells, naïve B cells and Treg cells reconstitution between the 2 sources was roughly similar. Absolute CD4+T cells hardly reached 500 per μL by one year posttransplantation and most B cells were of naïve phenotype. Correlations between immune reconstitution and infection were then performed by multivariate analyses. Low CD4+ and high CD8+T cells absolute counts at 3 months were linked to increased risks of overall and viral (but not bacterial) infections. When assessing for the naïve/memory phenotypes at 3 months among the CD4+ T cell compartment, higher percentages of memory subsets were protective against late infections: central memory CD4+T cells protected against overall and bacterial infections; late effector memory CD4+T cells protected against overall, bacterial and viral infections. At the opposite, high percentage of effector- and late effector-memory subsets at 3 months among the CD8+ T cell compartment predicted higher risks for viral infections. Patients transplanted from alternative donors represent a population with very high risk of infection. Detailed phenotypic analysis of immune reconstitution may help to evaluate infection risk and to adjust infection prophylaxis. [less ▲]

Trying to describe polytheism is a difficult enterprise because the whole system can be seen as a complex structure, each element of which (a deity with its proper name) is both itself a complex set of prerogatives, and at the same time, must be considered in concert with the other elements. After a brief historiographical overview, this paper focuses on the first aspect by using the notion of ‘network’ as a metaphor to refer to the complexity of the ancient Greek gods. It provides two case studies, of the Moirai and the goddess Hera. The paper concludes that polytheism can be described if one conceptualises the complexity of the gods—their unity and diversity—together at every level (Panhellenic and local, cult and myths, and so on). Health disorders in bovine herds are, in essence, multifactorial. They are based on the equilibrium among various factors. The major difficulty in managing endemias in livestock production emerges from two elements: the extreme variability of practices among farms and over time on one hand and on the other hand, the crossed impact of various factors producing the same result. A simple example will illustrate the two problems: Mastitis has epidemiological components that govern their own response to means of prevention. Because no two dairy farms ever have fifty per cent of their livestock production practices in common, the establishment of the usual means of prevention will never have the same dosable impact in each of the two farms (Bradley et al. 2007; Théron et al. 2009). Further, in view of the variability of certain practices or adjustments over time, a situation can vary while all other factors remain constant, due to a neglected invisible factor, thus diminishing the strength of the prevention argument. Each of us has known situations in which post-dipping did not generate the anticipated effects, and situations in which, after a transitory improvement linked to milking practices, the situation degrades again for a cause associated with the milking machine or feeding. The conclusion of this introduction is both simple and complex: the integrated control of mastitis is based on long-term monitoring. This monitoring is justified by the economic and societal impact of this disease. Good monitoring implies the definition of key measurable control points. The aim of this article will be to define the indicators and epidemiological objectives that enable the level of mammary health and its evolution to be defined over time. [less ▲]

We consider a class of optimal power flow (OPF) applications where some loads offer a modulation service in exchange for an activation fee. These applications can be modeled as multi-period formulations of the OPF with discrete variables that define mixed-integer non-convex mathematical programs. We propose two types of relaxations to tackle these problems. One is based on a Lagrangian relaxation and the other is based on a network flow relaxation. Both relaxations are tested on several benchmarks and, although they provide a comparable dual bound, it appears that the constraints in the solutions derived from the network flow relaxation are significantly less violated.
