This paper gives the results of the first census of trees in the 32.15 ha plot in order to provide tree species richness in Kibira rainforest (Burundi). All trees ≥ 10 cm dbh were permanently tagged and their girth measured. The forest structure pattern analysed were diameter at breast height (dbh), basal area, relative dominance, and relative density, Importance Value Index (IVI) and Family Importance Value (FIV). In total, 6504 trees representing 70 species, 67 genera and 37 families were recorded. Tree density was 202 stems/ha, with a basal area of 21.05m²/ha. Seventeen families were represented by a single species each, eleven families were represented by two species each, five families were represented by three species each, and four families were represented by four species each. The most important families in relation to FIV were Euphorbiaceae, Myrtaceae and Araliaceae. Macaranga kilimandscharica, Syzygium guineense and Polyscias fulva were the most important species in relation to IVI. Two tree species were found to be endemic to the Albertine Rift and one species probably endemic to the Albertine Rift. The Shannon-Weiner index (H') and eveness index (J') were respectively 3.18 and 0.75. This study provides a baseline for the management of Kibira National Park. As local communities still depend on forest resources, conservation awareness-raising and education actions have to focus in nearby villages, and growing some fast-growing native trees in the vicinity of the settlement, would be helpful for local communities, this would reduce their dependence on forest resources.

[less ▲]

The right dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) of humans has been reported to be involved in a broad range of motor and cognitive functions. We explored the basis of this behavioral heterogeneity by performing a connectivity-based parcellation using meta-analytic approach applied to PMd coactivations. We compared our CBP results to parcellations obtained through resting-state functional connectivity and probabilistic diffusion tractography,. Functional connectivity profiles and behavioral decoding of the resulting PMd subregions allowed characterizing their respective behavior profile. These procedures divided the right PMd into five distinct subregions that formed a cognitive-motor gradient along a rostro-caudal axis. In particular, we found (i) a rostral subregion functionally connected with prefrontal cortex, which likely supports high-level cognitive processes, such as working memory (ii) a central subregion showing a mixed behavioral profile and functional connectivity to parietal regions of the dorsal attention network, and (iii) a caudal subregion closely integrated with the motor system. Additionally, we found (iv) a dorsal subregion, preferentially related to hand movements and connected to both cognitive and motor regions, and (v) a ventral subregion, whose functional profile fits the concept of an eye-movement related field. In conclusion, right PMd may be considered as a functional mosaic formed by five subregions. [less ▲]

The progress accomplished during the past decade in nonlinear system identi fication in structural dynamics is considerable. The objective of the present paper is to consolidate this progress by challenging the community through a new benchmark structure exhibiting complex nonlinear dynamics. The proposed structure consists of two o ffset cantilevered beams connected by a highly flexible element. For increasing forcing amplitudes, the system sequentially features linear behaviour, localised nonlinearity associated with the buckling of the connecting element, and distributed nonlinearity resulting from large elastic deformations across the structure. A finite element-based code with time integration capabilities is made available at http://sem.org/TDIV-Nonlin.asp. This code permits the numerical simulation of the benchmark dynamics in response to arbitrary excitation signals. [less ▲]

The paper first distinguishes ritual action for sovereigns, which integrates the honoured rulers at a practical level within the religious life of a community, from other, more discrete configurations of the relation between royal and divine power. Among these trends, focus is on the rhetorical and spectacular dimension of wonder. The strategies of wonder-making are first studied in theory through paradoxography, then the categories of grandeur, exoticism and technical excellence are identified in action in Alexandrian religious life and festivals. Master of an empire with universal claims and collector of everything that is beautiful, rare and precious in the world, the king distances himself from his subjects in order to make his superior status explicit. Distance is, however, only the premise for the king to manifest himself to the great public through epiphanies that can be compared with those of divine power. The paper also discusses the way the conformism of court elites not only satisfied their own need to claim for distinguished social status, but also helped royal message spread and caused loyalty to it. Although a great number of studies has already been devoted to the topic of sacred trees in Greco-Roman Egypt, this paper aims at offering a new contribution to this debate by shifting the focus of research from the hitherto dominant interest in ancient and modern botanical classifications to the study of the socio-cultural contexts (and their diachronic changes) in which sacred trees were used in Hellenistic and Roman Egypt. The analysis focuses on the case study of the tree called περσ(ε)ία / persea in Greek and Latin sources. After drawing attention to the non-complete overlap between the denomination adopted by Greek and Latin authors for this Egyptian sacred plant and its “emic” Hieroglyphic / Demotic correspondents, ἰšd and šw3b, the focus will be on patterns of continuity, innovation and re-contextualization of Egyptian religious traditions in Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt and on the social actors and contexts that were involved in the use and protection of sacred plants. When approached from this perspective, the evidence on persea provides a fruitful dossier to investigate some aspects of the dialectic between continuity and transformation in cultural traditions, with particular regard to cases where traditions were adapted beyond cultural and ethnic limits. Moreover, the persea dossier enables us to discuss ancient contexts in which, for religious reasons, nature was seen as worth of being protected and preserved against the risk of extinction. This will allow us to raise some preliminary questions concerning the limits of applicability of modern environmental thinking to ancient cultures, in contexts in which the preservation of vegetal species was seen as an important value for the identity of a community, thus requiring individual and institutional commitment.

[less ▲]

Lubumbashi is one of the fastest growing African cities with annual population growth rates of 5 %. Its urban population growth leads to a rapid urban growth associated with several environmental problems. This study test hypothesis that rapid built-up growth is followed by natural habitats decrease and creates favorable conditions for the spread of Tithonia diversifolia, an invasive specie. From two SPOT satellite images from 2002 and 2008 supported by field visits, seven land cover classes were obtained and the accuracy of the classification was verified. Landscape dynamic has been demonstrated through a transition matrix, by calculating spatial pattern metrics and identification of spatial transformation processes. The results obtained show that built-up covering 32 % of the landscape in 2008 against 22.6 % of the landscape in 2002. Its growth, followed by Tithonia diversifolia and anthropogenic vegetation, operates to the detriment of natural classes. The effect of human impact was translated by the increase of disturbance index which increased from 1.9 to 3.3 in six years, confirming that in the study area, natural classes are removed parallel to aggregation and creating of anthropogenic classes. The study area has undergone significant changes related to urban growth, which implies establishing efficient urban planning and management policies to reverse this trend. [less ▲]
