Hydrogeophysics has become a major field of research in the past two decades and time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is one of the most popular techniques to monitor passive and active processes in shallow subsurface reservoirs. Time-lapse inversion schemes have been developed to refine inversion results, but they mostly still rely on a spatial regularization procedure based on the standard smoothness constraint. In this paper, we propose to apply a covariance-based regularization operator in the time-lapse ERT inverse problem. We first illustrate the method for surface and cross-hole ERT with two synthetic cases and compare the results with the smoothness-constrained inversion (SCI). The examples show that the covariance–constrained inversions (CCI) better image the anomaly both in terms of shape and amplitude. Although more important in low-sensitivity zones, improvements are observed everywhere in the tomograms. Those synthetic examples also show that an error made in the range or in the type of the variogram model has a limited impact on the resulting image, which still remains better than SCI. The method is then applied to cross-borehole ERT field data from a heat tracing experiment, where the comparison with direct measurements shows a strong improvement of the breakthrough curves retrieved from ERT. The proposed method could be extended to the time dimension which would allow the use of CCI in 4D inversion schemes. [less ▲]

Background. Curcuminoids are natural products with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. There have been a number of reports on the analgesic effects of curcuminoids in clinical trials, yet data have not been fully conclusive. Objectives. To provide the highest level of evidence on the efficacy of curcuminoids in patients with painful conditions through meta-analysis of data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using data reported by RCTs. The primary efficacy measure was pain intensity or algofunctional status. Treatment effect was summarized with standardized mean difference (SMD) calculated from differences in means of pain measures between treatment and control groups using a random-effects model. Results. A total of eight RCTs met our inclusion criteria that included 606 randomized patients. Curcuminoids were found to significantly reduce pain (SMD: −0.57, 95% CI: −1.11 to −0.03, P = 0.04). This pain-relieving effect was found to be independent of administered dose and duration of treatment with curcuminoids, and was free from publication bias. Curcuminoids were safe and well tolerated in all evaluated RCTs. Conclusion. Curcuminoids supplements may be a safe and effective strategy to improve pain severity, by warranting further rigorously conducted studies to define the long-term efficacy and safety. [less ▲]

The Romont quarry is recently considered as a new type section for the Middle Belgium loess deposits. The site displays a nearly 10 m thick loess sequence mainly dating from the Upper Pleistocene. The Rocourt Pedocomplex, the Humiferous Complex of Remicourt, the Malplaquet Soil and the Nagelbeek Tongued Horizon are especially well developed. Classical approaches to study the loess sequence need observable sections. Unfortunately these sections are rare in Middle Belgium, often temporary and not deep enough. To identify reference horizons, archaeologists and geologists use to resort to hand auger sampling techniques. Investigation of loess by cone penetration tests could offer an alternative to the lack of outcrops and could be used complementary to hand drilling techniques. This study focuses on a methodology to approach as a first step the loess sequence to identify the presence or not of some layers and their extension. The investigation campaign performed on the site of Romont aims to define reference horizons based on mechanical properties by comparison with an observable outcrop. Then 16 cone penetration tests have been realized behind the working face. The campaign results reveal the existence of some horizons into the loess sequence. The transition between the Humiferous Complex of Remicourt and the Rocourt Pedocomplex is the most noticeable horizon. These two pedostratigraphic units are important due to the presence of archaeological materials in Middle Belgium and borderlands. Closer to the surface the Nagelbeek Tongued Horizon and the decarbonation limit are also highlighted from results of the geotechnical campaign. [less ▲]
