Background. Curcuminoids are natural products with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. There have been a number of reports on the analgesic effects of curcuminoids in clinical trials, yet data have not been fully conclusive. Objectives. To provide the highest level of evidence on the efficacy of curcuminoids in patients with painful conditions through meta-analysis of data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using data reported by RCTs. The primary efficacy measure was pain intensity or algofunctional status. Treatment effect was summarized with standardized mean difference (SMD) calculated from differences in means of pain measures between treatment and control groups using a random-effects model. Results. A total of eight RCTs met our inclusion criteria that included 606 randomized patients. Curcuminoids were found to significantly reduce pain (SMD: −0.57, 95% CI: −1.11 to −0.03, P = 0.04). This pain-relieving effect was found to be independent of administered dose and duration of treatment with curcuminoids, and was free from publication bias. Curcuminoids were safe and well tolerated in all evaluated RCTs. Conclusion. Curcuminoids supplements may be a safe and effective strategy to improve pain severity, by warranting further rigorously conducted studies to define the long-term efficacy and safety. [less ▲]

Aims. — To estimate the risk of injury in rugby sevens.News. — The rugby sevens is an increasingly popular sport since the creation of the IRB SevensWorld Series in 2000 and its introduction as an Olympic sport in 2016. Despite its strong simi-larities to rugby union, it remains a different sport with higher game intensity, causing a moresignificant number of injuries. The average incidence of injury in rugby sevens is 249.27 for1000 hours of play against 102.25 for 1000 hours of rugby union matches.Conclusion. — This epidemiological review of injuries among the rugby sevens refers to theirlocation and their nature, the causes, the position of players, the type of field, as well as thedowntime of practice following trauma. A majority of multiple myeloma patients present with osteolytic bone lesions that can cause bone pain, fractures or hypercalcaemia. Correct identification of these lesions is important in the initial assessment of the disease. Although the radiological skeletal survey is the gold standard to detect bone osteolytic lesions, it may miss small bone lesions or lesions located in the spine or pelvis due to the superimposed images of soft tissues. These limitations propelled newer imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. In addition, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT and MRI have prognostic value and can be used to monitor disease. This review discusses the additional value of PET/CT and MRI in the management of MM. Virus-like particles of human papillomavirus (HPV-VLP), resulting from the self-assembly of the capsid proteins (L1 or L1 and L2), have been widely used to study HPV as they are similar to the native virion. Moreover, two prophylactic vaccines, Gardasil® and Cervarix®, are based on HPV-VLP L1. Analytical techniques currently used to characterize HPV-VLP, such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot, ELISA, are time-consuming and semi-quantitative. In this study, capillary electrophoresis (CE) was evaluated for the analysis of intact HPV16-VLP. The usefulness of capillary inner wall coating as well as various BGEs, pH and detergent additives were investigated. Reproducible HPV-VLP analysis in CE was achieved using poly(ethylene oxide) coated capillary and a BGE containing high salt concentration and low SDS concentration. The developed method enables HPV-VLP detection in less than 10 min (migration times RSD : 1.6 %). The identity of HPV-VLP peak was confirmed by comparison with a sample obtained from a wild-type baculovirus and with VLP-based vaccine, Gardasil®, after adjuvant dissolution. Finally, we applied the developed methodology to VLP-based vaccines, demonstrating that CE could be successfully used for vaccine quality control. [less ▲]

Since the adoption of the ICH Q8 document concerning the development of pharmaceutical processes following a Quality by Design (QbD) approach, there have been many discussions on the opportunity for analytical procedure developments to follow a similar approach. While development and optimization of analytical procedure following QbD principles have been largely discussed and described, the place of analytical procedure validation in this framework has not been clarified. This article aims at showing that analytical procedure validation is fully integrated into the QbD paradigm and is an essential step in developing analytical procedure that are effectively fit for purpose. Adequate statistical methodologies have also their role to play: such as design of experiments, statistical modelling and probabilistic statements. The outcome of analytical procedure validation is also an analytical procedure Design Space and from it, control strategy can be set. [less ▲]

A pseudo-Boolean function is a real-valued function $f(x)=f(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)$ of $n$ binary variables; that is, a mapping from $\{0,1\}^n$ to ${\bbr}$. For a pseudo-Boolean function $f(x)$ on $\{0,1\}^n$, we say that $g(x,y)$ is a quadratization of $f$ if $g(x,y)$ is a Quadratic polynomial depending on $x$ and on $m$ auxiliary binary variables $y_1,y_2,\ldots,y_m$ such that $f(x)= \min \{ g(x,y) : y \in \{0,1\}^m \} $ for all $x \in \{0,1\}^n$. By means of quadratizations, minimization of $f$ is reduced to minimization (over its extended set of variables) of the quadratic function $g(x,y)$. This is of some practical interest because minimization of quadratic functions has been thoroughly studied for the last few decades, and much progress has been made in solving such problems exactly or heuristically. A related paper initiated a systematic study of the minimum number of auxiliary $y$-variables required in a quadratization of an arbitrary function $f$ (a natural question, since the complexity of minimizing the quadratic function $g(x,y)$ depends, among other factors, on the number of binary variables). In this paper, we determine more precisely the number of auxiliary variables required by quadratizations of \emph{symmetric} pseudo-Boolean functions $f(x)$, those functions whose value depends only on the Hamming weight of the input $x$ (the number of variables equal to 1). The inactement of institutional bilingualism by the Constitution exposes Cameroon to translation every day, as all official texts/speeches produced in one of the two official languages (French and English) must be translated into the other. This translation demand requires translators and training of translators/interpreters becomes compulsory. First Cameroonian translators were initially trained in universities and colleges abroad and later on, after independence, at home when the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) was created in the mid 1980s. The main objective of the school was to train translators/interpreters for public service. This goal will lapse when the Government decided not to enroll systematically ASTI graduates in 1999. Meanwhile, other private institutes as ISTI of Yaoundé, or programs like those of the University of Yaounde I opened their doors with curricula almost modeled on that of ASTI. Moreover, there is no regulation body for the profession, the only professional associtation that has been existing since the 90s is yet to find its way. This communication aims at looking into the development of translation in Cameroon from independence. Some suggestions are also made towards the future of the profession in one of the few countries where bilingualism is institutional and whereby about 300 local languages interact in a daily basis.
