Human biomonitoring (HBM) is an effective tool for assessing actual exposure to chemicals that takes into account all routes of intake. Although hair analysis is considered to be an optimal biomarker for assessing mercury exposure, the lack of harmonization as regards sampling and analytical procedures has often limited the comparison of data at national and international level. The European-funded projects COPHES and DEMOCOPHES developed and tested a harmonized European approach to Human Biomonitoring in response to the European Environment and Health Action Plan. Herein we describe the quality assurance program (QAP) for assessing mercury levels in hair samples from more than 1800 mother–child pairs recruited in 17 European countries. To ensure the comparability of the results, standard operating procedures (SOPs) for sampling and for mercury analysis were drafted and distributed to participating laboratories. Training sessions were organized for field workers and four external quality-assessment exercises (ICI/EQUAS), followed by the corresponding web conferences, were organized between March 2011 and February 2012. ICI/EQUAS used native hair samples at two mercury concentration ranges (0.20–0.71 and 0.80–1.63) per exercise. The results revealed relative standard deviations of 7.87–13.55% and 4.04–11.31% for the low and high mercury concentration ranges, respectively. A total of 16 out of 18 participating laboratories the QAP requirements and were allowed to analyze samples from the DEMOCOPHES pilot study. Web conferences after each ICI/EQUAS revealed this to be a new and effective tool for improving analytical performance and increasing capacity building. The procedure developed and tested in COPHES/DEMOCOPHES would be optimal for application on a global scale as regards implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. [less ▲]

Voice problems can be triggered by both vocal misuse and overuse. While misuse is caused by inappropriate vocal actions, overuse results from greater vocal loading than the individual is able to recover from. Vocal load depends primarily on the quantity of phonation in terms of duration, fundamental frequency and sound pressure of the voice. Portable load quantification systems have been available for several years. These dosimeters allow the objective description of vocal behavior in real situations for a prolonged duration. They are primarily used by voice professionals – people who need their voices for their work – such as teachers and singers. Voice dosimetry makes it possible to identify risky vocal behaviors and situations promoting dysphonia, in an ecological context. The objective of research using these tools is to suggest guidelines for the prevention, evaluation and treatment of dysphonia, mainly in people who use their voices a lot. In addition, this research attempts to set standards for daily voice use for different groups of individuals. [less ▲]

Based on the idea that metaphors do not only reflect the perceived reality, but also function as cues through which citizens come to understand complex political processes, the aim of this study is to look at how specific metaphors might impact on the citizens' framing of Belgian federalism. To measure the impact of metaphors on the citizens' political representations, we conducted an experiment among 493 citizens based on an article published in the newspaper Le Soir in which Belgian federalism was compared to a Tetris game in both a text and an image. The participants were distributed into four experimental conditions according to the type of input they had been exposed to (text and image, text only, image only, no input) and were asked to perform a free description task. The productions of the participants were analyzed using keyword analyses and content analyses. The results suggest that the participants who had been exposed to the experimental text tend to differently frame their perception of Belgian federalism. These results show that reading the text, more than looking at the image, has an impact on the representations of the citizens but that this impact is short-lived. [less ▲]

This paper focuses on the computation of asymptotic standard errors (ASE) of ability estimators with dichotomous item response models. A general framework is considered and ability estimators are defined from a very restricted set of assumptions and formulas. This approach encompasses most standard methods such as maximum likelihood, weighted likelihood, maximum a posteriori and robust estimators. A general formula for the ASE is derived from the theory of M-estimation. Well-known results are found back as particular cases for the maximum and robust estimators, while new ASE proposals for the weighted likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimators are presented. These new formulas are compared to traditional ones by means of a simulation study under Rasch modeling. [less ▲]

To date, magnetic shields utilizing high-temperature superconductor materials mostly comprise bulk materials, usually shaped into a cylinder and then heat treated. We analyze the potential of thin-film technology, whereby a layer of superconductor is deposited on a substrate, to fabricate magnetic shields. Films deposited on a curved surface are inevitably granular, leading to reduced critical current density compared with crystalline films. This limits the maximum field that can be screened. Granular films also have an enhanced penetration depth compared with the bulk value, which determines the maximum possible screening at applied fields below the maximum. We demonstrate the utility of a mutual inductancemeasurement to evaluate small flat test samples of a granular film for their potential as a shielding material in a more complex geometry. Thismeasurement predicts both themaximum magnetic field that can be screened and the residual leakage at fields below the maximum. The tested film was produced by the Electrophoretic deposition of YBCO on a silver substrate. The maximum screening field was comparable with that obtained for a similar film on a cylindrical substrate. We also show comparable results from a crystalline YBCO film. [less ▲]
