Flooding is a dominant risk in the Algerian territory. It often appears when streams overflow, when they are dry all the year (the wadis) in the agricultural plains. However, in the last decades, they are appearing more frequently in urban areas, causing human and material losses. In order to define the areas that could be flooded, locate recurrent events and identify their reasons, the preliminary historical study of floods in urban areas was developed. [less ▲]

Damage caused by ungulates to agricultural areas are difficult to evaluate because the real extent of the damage remains usually poorly described and potentially arising conflicts. Recent advances in unmanned aerial system (UAS) provide new versatile mapping and quantification possibilities in a wide range of applications. We used crop fields (Zea mays) damaged by wild boar (Sus scrofa) and compared the extent of the damage by means of three methods: i) traditional ground-based assessment ii) UAS orthoimages with operator delineation and iii) UAS Crop Height Model with automatic delineation based on height threshold. We showed for the first time that UAS could be applied for assessing damage of ungulates to agriculture. The two methods using UAS imagery provide coherent and satisfactory results and trended to underestimate the damage area when compared to in-use ground-based field expertise. However we suggest that performance of UAS should further be tested in variable conditions in order to assess the broad application of this tool. Our study describes the potential of UAS as a tool for estimating more accurately the damage area and subsequently the compensation costs for wildlife damage. The proposed approach can come in support of local and regional policies for the definitions of compensation for farmers. [less ▲]

As well known, in the analysis of bird impact events the bird is often reduced, even experimentally, to a surrogate projectile modeled as a weakly compressible fluid (typically a mixture of water and air). From a numerical standpoint, the presence of a free surface and the strong interaction with the aircraft structures represent a limit for traditional computational fluid dynamics methods based on an Eulerian grid. On the other hand, classical Lagrangian methods cannot cope with the extremely large deformations experienced by the projectile during the impact. The Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) is a Lagrangian particle method that can account for very large deformations, preserving the robustness and generality of the finite element method, and thus owning a key advantage over other approaches, e.g. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), usually cursed with consistency and stability issues. To assess the possibilities of the method in the context of bird impact, theoretical analyses are initially performed based on the impact of a water jet on a rigid surface. Then, the influence of the geometry of a more realistic projectile is analyzed and the capability of the method to take into account separation and fragmentation is highlighted. [less ▲]

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) measurement in serum or plasma is a necessary tool for the exploration of calcium/phosphate disorders, and is widely used as a surrogate marker to assess skeletal and mineral disorders associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), referred to as CKD-bone mineral disorders (CKD-MBD). CKD currently affects >10% of the adult population in the United States and represents a major health issue worldwide. Disturbances in mineral metabolism and fractures in CKD patients are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Appropriate identification and management of CKD-MBD is therefore critical to improving clinical outcome. Recent increases in understanding of the complex pathophysiology of CKD, which involves calcium, phosphate and magnesium balance, and is also influenced by vitamin D status and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23 production, should facilitate such improvement. Development of evidence-based recommendations about how best to use PTH is limited by considerable method-related variation in results, of up to 5-fold, as well as by lack of clarity about which PTH metabolites these methods recognise. This makes it difficult to compare PTH results from different studies and to develop common reference intervals and/or decision levels for treatment. The implications of these method-related differences for current clinical practice are reviewed here. Work being undertaken by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) to improve the comparability of PTH measurements worldwide is also described. [less ▲]

This paper describes the development of a complete methodology for the aeroservoelastic modeling of horizontal axis wind turbines at the conceptual design stage. The methodology is based on the implementation of unsteady aerodynamic modeling, advanced description of the control system and nonlinear finite element calculations in the SWT wind turbine design package. The aerodynamic modeling is carried out by means of fast techniques, such as the Blade Element Method and the unsteady Vortex Lattice Method, including a free wake model. The complete model also includes a description of a doubly fed induction generator and its control system for variable speed operation. The SWT software features a non-linear finite element solver with multi-body dynamics capability. The full methodology is used to perform complete aeroservoelastic simulations of a realistic 2MW wind turbine model. The interaction between the three components of the approach is carefully analyzed and presented here. [less ▲]

Children have always been considered as vulnerable subjects. In the course of time, the intervention of the law for ensuring their protection has grown, and the notion of "best interest" of the child has been shaped as a central one in this context. The contribution aims at examining the role of the Courts in the European territory (both the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice) and the convergences or differences in the respective case-law on this topic. Surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) using transobturator tape insertion is widely accepted. However several postoperative complications were reported in the literature including infections, abscess and fistula formation. Here we report a case of 57 year old female who presented with abscess and left vaginocutaneous buttock fistula 7 years after transobturator polypropelene tape insertion. Treatment included abscess drainage with dissection of the fistulous tract and removal of the left arm of the transobturator tape along with antibiotic coverage. Sinus drainage stopped after 3 days. Stress urinary incontinence didn't recur. Suspicion of fistula formation should rise in patients presenting with bothersome vaginal or cutaneous discharge after transobturator tape insertion. This case is particular since it describes a fistula complication with polypropelene tape which is unusual with this type of tapes. Treatment of such complication should always consist of surgical removal of the mesh to allow closure of the fistulous tract. [less ▲]
