Architects express themselves graphically in order to communicate ideas both to clients and to themselves. In practice, they rely on a variety of representations such as free-hand drawings, 3D computer rendered images, and photomontages to convey their design intent. Research to date has demonstrated differences and commonalities in the ways in which expert designers and laymen perceive visual understanding. It is still unclear how architects themselves use different types of representations to express different intentions, and how accurately their expected audience perceives those intentions. The purpose of this research is to investigate how laymen interpret the initial design intent of an architect’s design, and what role different forms of representations play in this process of understanding a design. This paper describes a five-step process for developing a survey that was used to gather data from 686 laymen respondents. It was found that certain types of simpler representations presented in specific contexts are unexpectedly found to be a more efficient way to faithfully transmit an architectural intent. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The application of sub-lethal stresses is known to be an efficient strategy to enhance survival of probiotic bacteria during drying processes. In this context, we previously showed that the application of heat stress upon the entry into stationary phase increased significantly the viability of Bifidobacterium bifidum. However, this heat shock has been considered only in small scale bioreactor and no information is available for a possible scaling-up strategy. Five different operating scales (0.2 L, 2 L, 20 L, 200 L and 2000 L) have thus been tested and the results showed that the viability of B. bifidum increases from 3.15 to 6.57 folds, depending on the scale considered. Our observations pointed out the fact that the heat stress procedure is scalable according to the main outcome, i.e. increases in cell viability, but other factors have to be taken into account. Among these factors, dissolved carbon dioxide seems to play a significant role since it explain the differences observed between the test performed at lab-scale and in industrial conditions. Noise in gene and protein expression is a major cause for bioprocess deviation. However, this phenomenon has been only scarcely considered in real bioprocessing conditions. In this work, a scaling-law derived from a genome-scale studies based on GFP reporter systems has been calibrated to an on-line flow cytometry device, allowing thus to get an insight at the level of promoter activity and associated noise during a whole microbial culture carried out in bioreactor. We show that most of the GFP reporter systems investigated and thus corresponding genes could be included inside the area covered by the scaling-law. The experimental results suggest that this scaling-law could be used to predict the dynamics of promoter activity, as well as the associated noise, in bioprocessing conditions. The knowledge acquired throughout this work could be used for the design of more robust expression systems. [less ▲]

AIMS: The objective assessment of maximal exercise capacity (MEC) using peak oxygen consumption (VO2) measurement may be helpful in the management of asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) patients. However, the relationship between left ventricular (LV) function and MEC has been relatively unexplored. We aimed to identify which echocardiographic parameters of LV systolic function can predict MEC in asymptomatic AS. METHODS AND RESULTS: Asymptomatic patients with moderate to severe AS (n = 44, aortic valve area <1.5 cm2, 66 ± 13 years, 75% of men) and preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF > 50%) were prospectively referred for resting echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise test. LV longitudinal strain (LS) of each myocardial segment was measured by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) from the apical (aLS) 4-, 2-, and 3-chamber views. An average value of the LS of the analysable segments was provided for each myocardial region: basal (bLS), mid (mLS), and aLS. LV circumferential and radial strains were measured from short-axis views. Peak VO2 was 20.1 ± 5.8 mL/kg/min (median 20.7 mL/kg/min; range 7.2-32.3 mL/kg/min). According to the median of peak VO2, patients with reduced MEC were significantly older (P < 0.001) and more frequently females (P = 0.05). There were significant correlations between peak VO2 and age (r = -0.44), LV end-diastolic volume (r = 0.35), LV stroke volume (r = 0.37), indexed stroke volume (r = 0.32), and E/e' ratio (r = -0.37, all P < 0.04). Parameters of AS severity and LVEF did not correlate with peak VO2 (P = NS for all). Among LV deformation parameters, bLS and mLS were significantly associated with peakVO2 (r = 0.43, P = 0.005, and r = 0.32, P = 0.04, respectively). With multivariable analysis, female gender (β = 4.9; P = 0.008) and bLS (β = 0.50; P = 0.03) were the only independent determinants (r2 = 0.423) of peak VO2. CONCLUSION: In asymptomatic AS, impaired LV myocardial longitudinal function determines reduced MEC. Basal LS was the only parameter of LV regional function independently associated with MEC. Despite a rapid growth and an ongoing need for outplacement services, little is yet known about the perceived adequacy and benefits of these services for redundant employees using them. We surveyed 360 Belgian redundant employees (i.e., clients) using outplacement services provided by a public employment agency. The results indicate that an outplacement experience perceived as adequate for clients fosters their overall impressions of justice towards the dismissing organization; this leads in turn to benefits for them: reduction of negative emotions, enhancement of their perceived well-being, future perspectives, and job-seeking activities - confirming the mediating role of overall justice.

Insults, gossip, and slander are the origin of many conflicts during the Ancien Régime. They are used to hurt someone’s honour or reputation, which are essential values to keeping good relationships in society. People need to defend their honour when they are injured. They can seek reparations by taking legal action or opting for infrajudicial practices, such as contacting a notary. This possibility has attracted too little attention from historians whereas notarial records are a massive source of information related to conflicts affecting people's daily lives. Indeed, during the eighteenth century, inhabitants of Liège contacted a notary in order to find an agreement, clear their name of an insult, or to write their version of an aggression. [less ▲]
