From the earliest Neolithic in the Near East to the last Chalcolithic cultures in Western Europe, certain flint tools have been used as sickles to harvest cereals. Such harvesting tools can be identified through use-wear analyses, because cutting herbaceous plants produces specific wear-traces on the working edge of flint blades. The aim of this work is to explore harvesting-driven microwear variability and, more particularly, intensity of use as a governing factor. To achieve this objective, an experiment was designed consisting in the production of flint replicas to be used as harvesting tools, in various controlled conditions. A simple, cost-effective method of quantifying wear-traces by meas uring polish extent is developed, requiring only classical use-wear observation equipment. Polish extent shows monotonic correlation with the amount of work, expressed either in terms of time or as the quantity of cereals harvested. Polish extent measurement is therefore proposed as a reliable and powerful descriptor of use intensity. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

X-ray tomography in a combination with gas chromatography was used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of adsorption front of organics distributed inside activated carbon filters during defined period of storage. This approach was tested against filters partly contaminated by CCl4 and n-heptane separately and by their mixture. X-ray tomography was shown to be capable to “recognize” different organic vaporvapours adsorbed on activated carbon and to follow their movement inside filters. Gas Chromatography was used either to monitor all possible losses of adsorbed species spices from the carbon bed, or either for “seeing” the location of each component of the mixture of organics along the filter depth. Such in situ information could be useful for evaluation of lifetime of carbon filters and for a thorough understanding of adsorption process taking place under static conditions. [less ▲]

The wheat germ oil may constitute an alternative to the misuse of this cereal grain resource. The Tunisian exploitation is limited, at present, in the human and animal feed in the grain form, straw or some transformed products. For the purpose of characterization, the wheat germ oil has been extracted by Soxhlet apparatus from a Tunisian variety of durum wheat (Maali) based on the hexane as a solvent. An analysis by gas chromatography (GC) was then performed to identify and quantify the fatty acids of the oil. Then, the oil has submitted to a second chromatography analysis in liquid phase (HPLC) to quantify the tocopherols. The most important fatty acids constituting have been the two polyunsaturated acids linoleic acid C18:2 (OMEGA 6) and the gamma acid- linoleic C18:3 : 58.24 % and 4.19 % respectively; and the acid monounsaturated oleic acid C18:1 ( 24.49 %) but also some saturated acid: palmitic acid C16:0 with ( 19.50 % ), and the stearic acid C18:0 (1.29%). For this variety of Tunisian durum wheat, the wheat germ oil contains, in addition, 80.27 mg / 100g of α- tocopherols (vitamin E). The wheat germ oil extracted from the Tunisian variety 'Maali' has proved rich in vitamin E and omega-6 ; a better valorisation on the nutritional or pharmaceutical plan is to this title recommended. Alexithymia generally refers to difficulties in identifying and describing emotions. In this paper, two studies explored whether the emotional deficits observed in alexithymia may be related to the use of emotional regulation strategies. Relations with various socio-demographic variables were also explored. In the first study, 255 students completed the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20. For the second study, 1107 participants from the general population completed the ERQ and the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire. Results demonstrated that alexithymia was related to the use of a suppression strategy and in particular to difficulties verbalizing emotions, suggesting that the capacity to communicate and name one’s emotion is a central aspect in alexithymia. Concerning socio-demographic variables, alexithymia and the use of a suppression strategy were found to be related to age and to be higher in males. The results of these studies and their clinical implications for treatment are discussed. [less ▲]

AIMS: The objective assessment of maximal exercise capacity (MEC) using peak oxygen consumption (VO2) measurement may be helpful in the management of asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) patients. However, the relationship between left ventricular (LV) function and MEC has been relatively unexplored. We aimed to identify which echocardiographic parameters of LV systolic function can predict MEC in asymptomatic AS. METHODS AND RESULTS: Asymptomatic patients with moderate to severe AS (n = 44, aortic valve area <1.5 cm2, 66 ± 13 years, 75% of men) and preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF > 50%) were prospectively referred for resting echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise test. LV longitudinal strain (LS) of each myocardial segment was measured by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) from the apical (aLS) 4-, 2-, and 3-chamber views. An average value of the LS of the analysable segments was provided for each myocardial region: basal (bLS), mid (mLS), and aLS. LV circumferential and radial strains were measured from short-axis views. Peak VO2 was 20.1 ± 5.8 mL/kg/min (median 20.7 mL/kg/min; range 7.2-32.3 mL/kg/min). According to the median of peak VO2, patients with reduced MEC were significantly older (P < 0.001) and more frequently females (P = 0.05). There were significant correlations between peak VO2 and age (r = -0.44), LV end-diastolic volume (r = 0.35), LV stroke volume (r = 0.37), indexed stroke volume (r = 0.32), and E/e' ratio (r = -0.37, all P < 0.04). Parameters of AS severity and LVEF did not correlate with peak VO2 (P = NS for all). Among LV deformation parameters, bLS and mLS were significantly associated with peakVO2 (r = 0.43, P = 0.005, and r = 0.32, P = 0.04, respectively). With multivariable analysis, female gender (β = 4.9; P = 0.008) and bLS (β = 0.50; P = 0.03) were the only independent determinants (r2 = 0.423) of peak VO2. CONCLUSION: In asymptomatic AS, impaired LV myocardial longitudinal function determines reduced MEC. Basal LS was the only parameter of LV regional function independently associated with MEC.
