Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), one of the most toxic mycotoxins, imposes serious health hazards. AFM1 had previously been classified as a group 2B carcinogen1 and has been classified as a group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO).2 Determination of AFM1 thus plays an important role for quality control of food safety. In this work, a sensitive and reliable aptasensor was developed for the detection of AFM1. The immobilization of aptamer through a strong interaction with biotin–streptavidin was used as a molecular recognition element, and its complementary ssDNA was employed as the template for a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) amplification. Under optimized assay conditions, a linear relationship (ranging from 1.0×10-4 to 1.0 µg L-1) was achieved with a limit of detection (LOD) down to 0.03 ng L-1. In addition, the aptasensor developed here exhibits high selectivity for AFM1 over other mycotoxins and small effects from cross-reaction with structural analogs. The method proposed here has been successfully applied to quantitative determination of AFM1 in infant rice cereal and infant milk powder samples. Results demonstrated that the current approach is potentially useful for food safety analysis, and it could be extended to a large number of targets. [less ▲]

This paper reports on a preliminary investigation into the elaboration, by the additive process known as laser cladding, of composite coatings with a matrix of stainless steel 316L reinforced with varying contents of tungsten (WC) or silicon carbides (SiC) particles. Laser cladding is characterised by ultra-fast solidification and cooling rates, thus giving rise to ultra-fine out-of-equilibrium microstructures and potentially enhanced mechanical properties. Both types of composite coatings – i.e. with SiC or WC ‒ are compared in terms of their microstructures and hardness. Special attention is given to the dissolution of the carbides particles and to interfacial reactions taking place between the particles and the metallic matrix. [less ▲]

Cet article propose une analyse des interactions entre deux disciplines, la géométrie architecturale et les supports numériques appliqués de la conception à la fabrication, ainsi que l’intérêt de leur intégration dans les démarches de conception architecturales actuelles. The objective of my paper is to present a psychopathological conception of psychopathy and compare it with the mainstream nosographic diagnosis (antisocial personality disorder in DSM-5 and the design of psychopathy according to the PCL-R). This theoretical essay is informed by clinical situations involving psychopaths who were interviewed in prison or in forensic centres. The method applied a phenomenological psychopathology analysis to the clinical material. I first compare Binswanger’s conception of mania with psychopathic functioning. Patients’ behaviour is similar but the difference relates to the dialectic between the ego and the alter ego. A patient with mania has a fundamental crisis of the ego, which a psychopath does not have. A second finding concerns emotions and the adaptive dimension of psychopathy. An epistemological discussion of the concept of emotions reveals that psychopaths are competent at managing emotional stimuli, which confers a psychological advantage upon them. Finally, a reflection on empathy and sympathy clarifies the presentation of “psychopathic being-in-the-world”. Starting with the tension between clinical practice and critique of the dominant diagnostic scales, we can consider that the “essential characteristics” of the psychopathic disorder are reification of the alter ego without presenting an ego-related disorder, the adaptive benefits of emotional coldness, and empathic skills without sympathy. Habitat loss is the main driver of the current high rate of species extinction, particularly in tropical forests. Understanding the factors associated with biodiversity loss, such as the extinction of species interactions and ecological functions, is an urgent priority. Here, our aim was to evaluate how landscape-scale forest cover influences fruit biomass comparing different tree functional groups. We sampled 20 forest fragments located within landscapes with forest cover ranging from 2 to 93 percent in the Atlantic Forest of southern Bahia, Brazil. In each fragment, we established five plots of 25 × 4 m and carried out phenological observations on fleshy fruit throughout one year on all trees ≥ 5 cm dbh. We estimated fruit availability by direct counting all fruits and derived fruit biomass from this count. We used spatial mixed linear models to evaluate the effects of forest cover on species richness, abundance, and fruit biomass. Our results indicated that forest cover was the main explanatory variable and negatively influenced the total richness and abundance of zoochoric and shade-tolerant but not shade-intolerant species. A linear model best explained variations in richness and abundance of total and shade-tolerant species. We also found that forest cover was positively correlated with the fruit biomass produced by all species and by the shade-tolerant assemblages, with linear models best explaining both relationships. The loss of shade-tolerant species and the lower fruit production in fragments with lower landscape-scale forest cover may have implications for the maintenance of frugivore, seed dispersal service, and plant recruitment. Formic acid (HCOOH) is one of the most abundant volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere. It is a major contributor to rain acidity in remote areas. There are, however, large uncertainties on the sources and sinks of HCOOH and therefore HCOOH is misrepresented by global chemistry-transport models. This work presents global distributions from 2008 to 2014 as derived from the measurements of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), based on conversion factors between brightness temperature differences and representative retrieved total columns over seven regions: Africa N, Africa S, Amazonia, Atlantic, Australia, Pacific and Russia. The dependence of the measured HCOOH signal to the thermal contrast is taken into account in the conversion method. This conversion presents errors lower than 20% for total columns ranging between 0.5 and 1×1016 molec/cm2 but reaches higher values, up to 78%, for columns that are lower than 0.3×1016 molec/cm2. Signatures from biomass burning events are highlighted, such as in the Southern Hemisphere and in Russia, as well as biogenic emission sources, e.g. over the Eastern US. A comparison between 2008 and 2014 with ground-based FTIR measurements obtained at four locations (Maido and Saint-Denis at La Réunion, Jungfraujoch and Wollongong) is shown. Although IASI columns are found to correlate well with FTIR data, a large bias (>100%) is found over the two sites at La Réunion. A better agreement is found at Wollongong with a negligible bias. The comparison also highlights the difficulty of retrieving total columns from IASI measurements over mountainous regions such as Jungfraujoch. A comparison of the retrieved columns with the global chemistry-transport model IMAGESv2 is also presented, showing good representation of the seasonal and inter-annual cycles over America, Australia, Asia and Siberia. A global model underestimation of the distribution and a misrepresentation of the seasonal cycle over India are also found. A small positive trend in the IASI columns is observed over Australia, Amazonia and India over the 2008-2014 period (from 0.7 to 1.5%/year), while a decrease of ~0.8%/year is measured over Siberia. Comtesse puis duchesse d’Angoulême, Louise de Savoie (1476-1531) est l’une des personnalités les plus influentes de la première Modernité européenne. Elle n’est pas seulement la mère de deux enfants illustres, Marguerite, future reine de Navarre, et François, futur François Ier, elle est aussi la sœur de Philibert II le Beau, duc de Savoie. Une fois son fils monté sur le trône de France, Louise domine le Conseil et assure, à deux reprises, la régence du royaume. Son action concerne encore les arts et les lettres : amatrice d’objets d’art et bibliophile avertie, elle demande à Léonard de Vinci d’imaginer une ville et un palais neuf à Romorantin, participant de la sorte à la diffusion en France des idées et des formes venues d’Italie. Curieusement, alors que son influence fut considérable, Louise de Savoie n’a pas fait l’objet d’une monographie récente (un ouvrage collectif à son propos paraîtra toutefois en 2015). Son emblématique n’a plus été analysé depuis les travaux d’Anne-Marie Lecocq (1987), qui s’était essentiellement concentrée sur les signes présents dans les livres qu’elle commanda pour soutenir l’éducation de ses enfants. À l’occasion de cette communication – prolongeant ainsi une recherche entreprise avec Pierre-Gilles Girault – nous voudrions revenir sur le discours héraldique de Louise de Savoie, en explicitant l’une de ses devises favorites, la cordelière. Pour la mère de François Ier, la corde à plusieurs nœuds revêt plusieurs significations. D’abord, puisqu’elle se compose de nœuds de Savoie, un emblème largement diffusé au début du XVIe siècle, notamment sous l’influence de Philibert II le Beau et Marguerite d’Autriche, elle souligne l’appartenance de la dame à la maison de Savoie. Ensuite, et ce de façon inédite au sein de la maison de Savoie, la cordelière de Louise associe nœuds de Savoie et cordon franciscain, une référence que nous proposons d’expliquer non pas uniquement, comme on le fait traditionnellement, par les liens prétenduement étroits qui reliaient la mère de François Ier avec l’ordre des Franciscains. Pour Louise, il s’agit sans doute aussi de se situer dans la lignée d’Anne de Bretagne, à laquelle la cordelière est indéniablement liée. [less ▲]

A l'occasion de cette étude, à la suite des travaux d'Anne-Marie Lecoq (1987), nous sommes revenus sur le discours héraldique de la comtesse et duchesse d'Angoulême, Louise de Savoie, l'influente mère de François Ier. Nous avons présenté et explicité ses devises favorites, à savoir la cordelière, qui évoque autant le nœud de Savoie que la cordelière franciscaine, le vol, sans doute choisi puisque l’aile évoque le L de Louise par homophonie, le bouquet de lis ou le cygne « navré », mais aussi les écus et les monogrammes qui lui sont associés et qui ponctuent enluminures, tapisseries, bas-reliefs et éléments sculptés de l’architecture. Notre intention a été de montrer d’une part comment Louise de Savoie manifeste, par l’intermédiaire de ces signes emblématiques, son identité et son pouvoir, d’autre part comment elle construit, par leur biais, un patrimoine, mental, susceptible de renforcer son clan et ses héritiers. iving/controlled polymerization methods have enabled the synthesis of numerous (co)polymers with defined compositions and architectures. However, the precision design of poly(vinylamine)-based copolymers remains challenging despite their extensive use in various fields of applications and the clear benefits to finely tune their properties. Here, we report on a two-step strategy for the synthesis of tailor-made poly(vinylamine) derivatives through the organometallic- mediated radical (co)polymerization (OMRP) of N-vinyl- acetamide and/or N-methylvinylacetamide followed by acid hydrolysis of the acetamide groups. A series of well-defined homopolymers as well as statistical and block copolymers with pendant primary and/or secondary amines having controlled molar masses, compositions, and low dispersities were produced accordingly. The reactivity ratios of the comonomers as well as the composition drift along the chain were determined in order to have a precise idea of the polymer structures. These advances represent a significant step toward an efficient platform for synthesis of this important class of amino group-containing (co)polymers. [less ▲]
