How can new players seeking to serve nonstandard worker categories (such as project-based workers) establish themselves into labour markets that are highly institutionalized? This paper explores the case of SMart, a Belgian community-based labour market intermediary that successfully developed solutions to better represent the interests of project-based workers and secure their discontinuous careers. Using an organizational legitimacy approach, we find that labour market entry and growth involve different types of boundary-crossing when addressing the needs of workers that do not fit into established categories. However, to justify boundary-crossing, the new player must complement its pragmatic work on delivering new services and tools with conceptual (cognitive) and structural (moral) legitimation work. My article looks at two recent Asian American texts written in the first-person plural – namely Julie Otsuka’s The Buddha in the Attic (2011) and Chang-rae Lee’s On Such a Full Sea (2014). My main goal is to show that the ambiguities and tensions generated by we narration in these two Asian American novels prove particularly apt when it comes to calling into questions essentialist views concerning the anatomy of community-building. But these two we texts are particularly interesting at a theoretical level, in that they help us challenge the orthodoxies of traditional narrative theory– among which Gérard Genette’s all-too-rigid distinction between the homo- and heterodiegetic levels in a text, or the generalized assumption, which has been notably challenged by Mieke Bal, that every act of story-telling is necessarily indebted to ‘a’ narrator, and a narrator of anthropomorphic standards at that. The Büchi-Bruyère theorem states that a multidimensional set of non-negative integers is b-recognizable if and only if it is b-definable. This result is a powerful tool for showing that many properties of b-automatic sequences are decidable. Going a step further, first-order logic can be used to show that many enumeration problems of b-automatic sequences can be described by b-regular sequences. The latter sequences can be viewed as a generalization of b-automatic sequences to integer-valued sequences. These techniques were extended to two wider frameworks: U-recognizable multidimensional sets of non-negative integers and multidimensional beta-recognizable sets of reals. In the second case, real numbers are represented by infinite words, and hence, the notion of beta-recognizability is defined by means of Büchi automata. Again, logic-based characterizations of $U$-recognizable (resp. beta-recognizable) sets allows us to obtain various decidability results. The aim of this chapter is to present a survey of this very active research domain. [less ▲]

Memories of Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) seem to be very detailed and stable over time. At present, there is still no satisfactory explanation for the NDEs’ rich phenomenology. Here we compared phenomenological characteristics of NDE memories with the reported experience’s intensity. We included 152 individuals with a self-reported “classical” NDE (i.e. occurring in life-threatening conditions). All participants completed a mailed questionnaire that included a measure of phenomenological characteristics of memories (the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire; MCQ) and a measure of NDE’s intensity (the Greyson NDE scale). Greyson NDE scale total score was positively correlated with MCQ total score, suggesting that participants who described more intense NDEs also reported more phenomenological memory characteristics of NDE. Using MCQ items, our study also showed that NDE’s intensity is associated in particular with sensory details, personal importance and reactivation frequency variables. [less ▲]

Let G be a simple graph of n vertices. We consider the problem ISil of deciding whether there exists an induced subtree with exactly i ≤ n vertices and l leaves in G. We also study the associated optimization problem, that consists in computing the maximal number of leaves, denoted by L_G(i), realized by an induced subtree with i vertices, for 2 ≤ i ≤ n. We compute the values of the map L_G for some classical families of graphs and in particular for the d-dimensional hypercubic graphs Q_d , d ≤ 6. Then we prove that the ISil problem is in general NP-complete. We also describe a nontrivial branch and bound algorithm that computes the function L_G for any simple graph G. In the special case where G is a tree, we provide a O(δn^3) time and O(n^2) space algorithm, where δ is the maximum degree of G. Finally, we exhibit a bijection between the set of discrete derivative of the sequences L_G (i) where G is caterpillar, and the set of prefix normal words. [less ▲]

This chapter deals with the characterization of the magnetic properties of superconductors which are subjected to magnetic fields that have been applied along two orthogonal directions, which is commonly referred to as a “crossed” magnetic field configuration. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the techniques that are useful to perform crossed field experiments, with an emphasis placed on practical aspects that are useful for designing the system and for understanding the measured data. This chapter is organized as follows. In Section 2, the key terms involved in the literature dealing with crossed field effects are defined. Section 3 deals with experimental methods and some key parameters will be outlined. In Section 4, practical conclusions will be drawn and next challenges in this area will be discussed. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
