Teeth are the object of multiple attentions and care but unfortunately, it is not the same case of the periodonte, their point of anchoring and essential support. What could be more commonplace than a bleeding arising during the daily brushing? Being not painful, it activates very often no concern and no request of consultation. It is nevertheless about one of the most obvious clinical signs of the periodontal diseases which affect, to varying degrees, practically 90 % of the population in France in all groups of ages and is responsible of the loss from 30 to 40 % of the teeth. For several decades, the scientific world admits a relation between the periodontal disease and certain systematic diseases, as the endocarditis, the atherosclerosis, the diabetes… And what about tendinopathies? Their appearance is often spontaneous without specific medical origin and their cure turns out long and painful. This review has for objective to highlight the relations between the oral hygiene and sportsmen. [less ▲]

The roles of mast cells in health and disease remain incompletely understood. While the evidence that mast cells are critical effector cells in IgE-dependent anaphylaxis and other acute IgE-mediated allergic reactions seems unassailable, studies employing various mice deficient in mast cells or mast cell-associated proteases have yielded divergent conclusions about the roles of mast cells or their proteases in certain other immunological responses. Such “controversial” results call into question the relative utility of various older versus newer approaches to ascertain the roles of mast cells and mast cell proteases in vivo. This review discusses how both older and more recent mouse models have been used to investigate the functions of mast cells and their proteases in health and disease. We particularly focus on settings in which divergent conclusions about the importance of mast cells and their proteases have been supported by studies that employed different models of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency. We think that two major conclusions can be drawn from such findings: (1) no matter which models of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency one employs, the conclusions drawn from the experiments always should take into account the potential limitations of the models (particularly abnormalities affecting cell types other than mast cells) and (2) even when analyzing a biological response using a single model of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency, details of experimental design are critical in efforts to define those conditions under which important contributions of mast cells or their proteases can be identified. This paper addresses a new approach to formalize the spatiotemporal relationships between geographical objects that do not exist or that are not present at the time of the analysis. We propose first an analysis of the spatiotemporal states of existence and presence for a geographical object. Then, we combine the spatiotemporal states to define a comprehensive set of life and motion configuration. The proposed model serves as formal basis to perform spatiotemporal queries by retrieving selected patterns in the life and motion configurations. The research is applied to the organization of a scientific conference, in doing so we are able to define the relationships that exist between an event located in space and time and mobiles objects evolving within the space, i.e. the conference participants. This study examined time-based prospective memory (PM) in children and explored the possible involvement of metamemory knowledge and executive functions in the use of an appropriate time monitoring strategy depending on the ongoing task’s difficulty. Specifically, a sample of 72 typically developing children aged 4, 6, and 9 years old were given an original PM paradigm composed of both an ongoing procedural activity and a PM task. Half of the participants (expert group) were trained in the ongoing activity before the prospective test. As expected, results show that time monitoring had a positive effect on children’s PM performance. Furthermore, mediation analyses reveal that strategic time monitoring was predicted by metamemory knowledge in the expert group but only by executive functions in the novice group. Overall, these findings provide interesting avenues to explain how metamemory knowledge, strategy use, and executive functions interact to improve PM performance during childhood. [less ▲]

A new indirect quadrangular mesh generation algorithm which relies on sequential decision-making techniques to search for optimal triangle recombinations is presented. In contrast to the state-of-art Blossom-quad algorithm, this new algorithm is a good candidate for addressing the 3D problem of recombining tetrahedra into hexahedra. [less ▲]

Of all the royal families of ancient or modern fame, few are as iconic as the eighteenth dynasty of pharaohs of the New Kingdom of Egypt, whose opulence and deeds we are still familiar to nearly 3,500 years after their time. Tenth pharaoh of this dynasty and father of Tutankhamun, Akhenaten (Amenhotep/Amenhotep IV) still fascinates Egyptologists and history lovers through the many questions surrounding his atypical rule. One of the most striking aspects of the so-called Amarna period concerns the representations of the pharaoh himself, very confusing compared to the traditional iconography of the New Kingdom. These intriguing portraits of Pharaoh raised a whole lot of medical assumptions, more or less substantiated. We review here the main theories developed throughout history. [less ▲]
