Anatomical, systematic, and paleobiogeographical data on the Devonian antiarchs from Belgium are reviewed, updated and completed thanks to new data from the field and re-examination of paleontological collections. The material of Bothriolepis lohesti Leriche, 1931 is enhanced and the species better described. An undetermined species of Bothriolepis is recorded from the Famennian of Modave (Liège Province), one species of Asterolepis redescribed from the Givetian of Hingeon and another one described from the Givetian of Mazy (Namur Province). Grossilepis rikiki sp. nov. is recorded from the Famennian tetrapod-bearing locality of Strud (Namur Province) and from the Famennian of Moresnet (Liège Province). It is the first occurrence of Grossilepis after the Frasnian and on the central southern coast of the Euramerican continent. Its occurrence in the Famennian of Belgium may be the result of a late arrival from the Moscow Platform and the Baltic Depression, where the genus is known from Frasnian deposits. Remigolepis durnalense sp. nov. is described from the Famennian of Spontin near Durnal (Namur Province). Except for the doubtful occurrence of Remigolepis sp. in Scotland, this is the first record of this genus in Western Europe. Its occurrence in Belgium reinforces the strong faunal affinities between Belgium and East Greenland and the hypothesis of a hydrographical link between the two areas during the Late Devonian. This study investigated the role of odorant cues used during host-habitat location by the generalist parasitoid, Nasonia vitripennis Walker. N vitripennis is a common parasitoid of Dipteran pupae found in association with decaying carrion. Behavioral assays were used to investigate the host-habitat searching behavior under different scenarios. First, we demonstrated N. vitripennis to be significantly attracted toward odorant cues associated with decaying meat. The biological activity of nine of the volatile molecules constituting the odor of decaying meat were tested on the searching behavior of parasitoid females through two complementary chemoecological approaches: electronantennography (EAG) and olfactometry bioassays. Butanoic acid and butan-1-ol elicited high olfactory responses, but no attraction was induced by these two chemicals. Behavioral assays showed that, among the VOCs tested, methyldisulfanylmethane (DMDS) was the only volatile chemical to induce attraction in N. vitripennis. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

In this double blind, unicentre, randomized, placebo controlled study, we evaluated the changes in 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) serum levels in 150 young Belgian adults (18–30 years), monthly supplemented with 50,000 IU of vitamin D (VTD) or placebo for 6 months, from November 2010 to May 2011. At T0, 30% of the population presented 25(OH)D serum levels below 20 ng/mL. In the VTD-treated group, mean serum levels increased from 21.2 ± 8.2 to 30.6 ± 8.8 ng/mL (𝑃 < 0.001) at T3mo and to 36.0 ± 9.2 ng/mL (𝑃 < 0.001) at T6mo. Despite documented VTD intake, no changes in serum levels were, however, observed in 10% of the treated group. In the placebo group, mean 25(OH)D serum levels decreased from22.8 ± 8.5 to 14.0 ± 6.9 ng/mL at T3mo (𝑃 < 0.001) but returned to values not significantly different from those observed at T0 (23.5 ± 8.6 ng/mL) at T6mo. No difference between serum calcium levels was observed between the groups throughout the study. In conclusion, monthly supplementation with50,000UIofVTDinwinter canwarrant serum25(OH)Dlevels above 20ng/mL in96.2%of thosehealthy young adultswithout inducing unacceptably high 25(OH)D concentration. This supplementation is safe andmay be proposed without 25(OH)D testing. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Objectives - This review studies the concept of affective security in children living outside of their family environment by a brief exposition of its practical illustration in institution. We want to show that sufficient affective security can be achieved even in children institutionalized with major attachment difficulties. Method - We will first examine the original meaning of the concept by a theoretical review of its evolution over the years in the literature. Then, we will consider various questions concerning the legitimacy of institutionalization in link with affective security through a case analysis illustrating the issue. We will finally end by mentioning the main practical implications about the optimization of affective security in children institutionalized. Results - It is foremost by the predictable and expected daily acts posed by the professional caregivers in institution that the child may find sufficient affective security, generating emotional well-being and ultimately, an overall adequate development. Discussion – Children early separated from their family home to be placed in residential institution most often suffer from serious difficulties in terms of attachment to others. In this context, the institution has to deal with a specifically challenge: that is, to help the child to (re-)find sufficient internal security to allow him to grow on solid foundations. The institutional life which replaces family life primarily consists of an organizational structure that seeks to make child life as predictable as possible so that it has the necessary daily benchmarks to evolve adequately. Conclusion – In the everyday life in institution, the professionals struggling with children’s attachment disorders constantly try to achieve a right emotional-body balance through their psycho-educational practices with the child deprived of secure attachment strategies. It is known that sum score-based methods for the identification of differential item functioning (DIF), such as the Mantel-Haenszel (MH) approach, can be affected by Type I error inflation in the absence of any DIF effect. This may happen when the items differ in discrimination and when there is item impact. On the other hand, outlier DIF methods have been developed that are robust against this Type I error inflation, while they are still based on the MH DIF statistic. The present paper gives an explanation for why the common MH method is indeed vulnerable to the inflation effect while the outlier DIF versions are not. In a simulation study we were able to produce the Type I error inflation by inducing item impact and item differences in discrimination. At the same time and in parallel with the Type I error inflation the dispersion of the DIF statistic across items was increased. As expected, the outlier DIF methods did not seem sensitive to impact and differences in item discrimination. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Recently, the number of papers about SFC increased drastically but scientists did not truly focus their work on quantitative performances of this technique. In order to prove the potential of UHPSFC, the present work discussed about the different steps of the analytical life cycle of a method: from development to validation and application. Moreover, the UHPSFC quantitative performances were evaluated in comparison with UHPLC, which is the main technique used for quality control in the pharmaceutical industry and then could be considered as a reference. The methods were developed using Design Space strategy, leading to the optimization of robust method. In this context, when the Design Space optimization shows guarantee of quality, no more robustness study is required prior to the validation. Then, the methods were geometrically transferred in order to reduce the analysis time. The UHPSFC and UHPLC methods were validated based on the total error approach using accuracy profile. Even if UHPLC showed better precision and sensitivity, UHPSFC method is able to give accurate results in a dosing range larger than the 80–120% range required by the European Medicines Agency. Consequently, UHPSFC results are valid and could be used for the control of active substance in a finished pharmaceutical product. Finally, UHPSFC validated method was used to analyse real samples and gave similar results than the reference method (UHPLC). [less ▲]

This paper addresses the numerical computation of nonlinear normal modes defined as two-dimensional invariant manifolds in phase space. A novel finite-element-based algorithm, combining the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin method with mesh moving and domain prediction-correction techniques, is proposed to solve the manifold-governing partial differential equations. It is first validated using conservative examples through the comparison with a reference solution given by numerical continuation. The algorithm is then demonstrated on nonconservative examples. A new functional polymer micelle with high loading efficiency of a poorly soluble drug was made of biocompatible and/or biosourced compounds, i.e. cholesterol-poly(ethylene glycol)-glucosamine (Chol-PEG-GlcNH2). A synthesis strategy combining enzymatic and metal-free click chemistry was developed in order to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of biomedical applications. After the self-assembly of the Chol-PEG-GlcNH2 amphiphilic polymer in water, the presence of glucosamine at the micelle surface confers an active targeting moiety to the nanocarriers whereas protonation of the peripheral primary amine delay their aggregation.
