[more ▼] Currency total return swaps (CTRS) are hybrid derivatives instruments that allow to simultaneously hedge against credit and currency risks. We develop a structural credit risk model to evaluate CTRS premia. Empirical test on a sample of 23,005 price observations from 59 underlying issuers yields an average percentage error of around 10%. This indicates that, beyond interest rate risk, firm-specific factors are major drivers of the variations in the valuation of these instruments. Regression analysis of residuals shows that exchange rate determinants account for up to 40% of model pricing errors — indicating that a currency risk premium affects the CTRS price significantly but only marginally, which confirms the prevalence of credit risk in the pricing of CTRS. [more ▼] Health disorders in bovine herds are, in essence, multifactorial. They are based on the equilibrium among various factors. The major difficulty in managing endemias in livestock production emerges from two elements: the extreme variability of practices among farms and over time on one hand and on the other hand, the crossed impact of various factors producing the same result. A simple example will illustrate the two problems: Mastitis has epidemiological components that govern their own response to means of prevention. Because no two dairy farms ever have fifty per cent of their livestock production practices in common, the establishment of the usual means of prevention will never have the same dosable impact in each of the two farms (Bradley et al. 2007; Théron et al. 2009). Further, in view of the variability of certain practices or adjustments over time, a situation can vary while all other factors remain constant, due to a neglected invisible factor, thus diminishing the strength of the prevention argument. Each of us has known situations in which post-dipping did not generate the anticipated effects, and situations in which, after a transitory improvement linked to milking practices, the situation degrades again for a cause associated with the milking machine or feeding. The conclusion of this introduction is both simple and complex: the integrated control of mastitis is based on long-term monitoring. This monitoring is justified by the economic and societal impact of this disease. Good monitoring implies the definition of key measurable control points. The aim of this article will be to define the indicators and epidemiological objectives that enable the level of mammary health and its evolution to be defined over time. [more ▼] One theoretical recommendation to develop sustainable rural tourism is to base its development on local resources. This should embed the tourist activity into the local society, avoid easy relocalization of investment, and help to brand the destination. The Belgian Ardennes is a proximate recreational location for Dutch people. The paper lists the local resources that attract Dutch tourists and the ways in which regional and local authorities deal with this tourist development. Based on key actor interviews and in depth analysis of the promotional material produced both by authorities and commercial companies, the paper underlines the hotchpotch of ways used in selling and consuming the Ardennes. Due to the lack of local entrepreneurship and because the Dutch tourism enterprises have better knowledge of the Dutch market, these enterprises control a huge share of tourism activities in the Ardennes. These Dutch investments change the destination as well as the local identity. Initially, Dutch companies developed a form of tourism based on nature and the rural landscape, but they diversified their activities into non land based tourism (not involving the use of land as in agriculture hors sol) and the ‘disneyfication’ of places. This Belgian case study follows more or less the well known ‘tourist destination life cycle model’, but the originality of the paper is to stress the difficulties posed for authorities to regulate tourism development and to maintain the quality of the destination. Dated on palaeographic grounds to the IV century AD, this manuscript provides us with evidence of particular interest on bilingualism and digraphism in Byzantine Egypt, for it is the only antique codex containing texts in both Greek and Latin, of both Christian and Secular content, and pertaining to different literary genres, such as rhetoric, hexametric poetry and Christian liturgy. [more ▼] This book consists of a textual and contextual study of the anonymous Latin poem known as the Alcestis Barcinonensis or « Barcelona Alcestis ». The work opens with a thorough codicological and palaeographic analysis of the Montserrat codex miscellaneous (2nd half of the IV century) to which the Alcestis belongs, with particular attention to the pages containing the poem. Subsequently, a transcription of the papyrological text and a critical edition are providede alongside a French translation and a critical and linguistic commentary. Lastly, the question of the context of production and reception of the Alcestis in Late Antiquity is addressed. [more ▼] BACKGROUND: Ferulic acid esterified with poly(ethylene glycol) with three different average molecular weights (200, 400 and 1000 g/mol) was studied in breadmaking. The effects of these antioxidants on the properties of wheat flour dough and bread were analyzed and compared with those obtained with ferulic acid and two commercial surfactants, diacetyl tartaric acid ester of mono- and diglycerides and sodium stearoyl lactylate. Farinographic and alveographic methods as well as weight, volume and bread firmness measurements were used for this purpose.

RESULTS: Such as ferulic acid, when the PEGylated derivatives were implemented in the dough (5000 ppm), it accelerated its breakdown and decreased its rheological properties. However, it allowed to avoid the important diminution of loaf volume observed when dough supplemented with ferulic acid was baked. That decrease in volume was related to the inhibition of the yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) by the unesterified ferulic acid. Moreover, two of the PEGylated ferulic acids even contributed to an increase of loaf volumes (5-6%) and demonstrated crumb softener properties.

CONCLUSION: The addition of ferulic acid in wheat flour dough caused the inhibition of the yeast, which resulted in decreased bread volume. That effect could be avoid by the esterification of ferulic acid with poly(ethylene glycol). [more ▼] The present study sought to determine: (i) the effects of Neospora caninum infection and twin pregnancy on plasma pregnancy-associated glycoprotein-2 (PAG-2) concentrations throughout pregnancy and (ii) whether plasma PAG-2 concentrations could predict abortion in N. caninum-infected cows. The study was performed on a commercial Holstein-Friesian dairy herd in northeastern Spain and the final data included those recorded in 53 non-aborting and 19 aborting animals. Blood samples were collected immediately before pregnancy diagnosis (on Days 40, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 post-insemination) in non-aborting cows or until the time of abortion detection in aborting cows. General lineal models (GLM) repeated measures ANOVA revealed the different behavior of PAG-1 and PAG-2, and significant effects of Neospora seropositivity, cool season and twin pregnancy on plasma PAG-2 concentrations throughout gestation (between-subject effects). In addition, based on the odds ratios, the likelihood of abortion increased in Neospora-seropositive cows (by a factor of 7.0) compared to seronegative animals and decreased in cows with a high plasma PAG-2 concentration (>4.5 ng/ml) on Day 120 of pregnancy (by a factor of 0.24), compared to the remaining cows. In conclusion, there is a relationship between plasma PAG-2 concentrations and the risk of abortion in Neosporainfected dairy cows. Thus, plasma PAG concentrations measured using anti-boPAG-2 antiserum on Day 120 of gestation could serve as an indicator of the abortion risk in N. caninum infected animals; values <4.5 ng/ml indicating a high risk of abortion in chronically infected animals.
