Chloramphenicol (CAP) is an antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections in human and veterinary medicine. The use of CAP was prohibited in the European Union in 1994. Control laboratories are required to use suitably validated analytical methods to check sample compliance with the regulation. A quantitative method based on liquid chromatography coupled to isotopic dilution tandem mass spectrometry (LC–IDMS/MS) was developed for the determination of chloramphenicol in honey, shrimp and poultry meat. The experimental protocol consisted of a liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate. Separation and detection were realized respectively by a 2690 Waters HPLC (Milford, MA, USA) and a Micromass Triple Quadrupole mass spectrometer (Micromass, Manchester, UK), equipped with an Electrospray source. The effects of mobile phase additives on the response of LC/ESI/MS were examined. Two different HPLC columns were tested: the X-Terra from Waters and the Alltima HP C18 HL from Alltech (Deerfield, IL, USA). A validation of the method was conducted according to the EU criteria for the analysis of chloramphenicol in foods. The decision limits (CCα) were 0.04, 0.03, 0.07 µg kg-1 and the detection capabilities (CCβ) were 0.05, 0.04, 0.08 µg kg-1 for honey, shrimp and poultry meat respectively. Those values are below the minimum required performance limit (MRPL) set at 0.3 µg kg-1 by the EU and 0.1 µg kg-1 by Belgium. Our protocol has the advantage to propose a unique extraction method working as well for honey, shrimp and poultry meat, contrary to similar published methods in which a different extraction method is used for each type of matrix. [less ▲]

The article proposes a renewed interpretation of the relation of the antique stadium of Olympia with its environment. It is argued that the stadium, far from being isolated from the city as commonly admitted, was connected to the Altis through a series of visual relations, adopting principles of dialogical architecture. This argument is illustrated through computer generated perspectives of the stadium. [less ▲]

This study investigated the role of odorant cues used during host-habitat location by the generalist parasitoid, Nasonia vitripennis Walker. N vitripennis is a common parasitoid of Dipteran pupae found in association with decaying carrion. Behavioral assays were used to investigate the host-habitat searching behavior under different scenarios. First, we demonstrated N. vitripennis to be significantly attracted toward odorant cues associated with decaying meat. The biological activity of nine of the volatile molecules constituting the odor of decaying meat were tested on the searching behavior of parasitoid females through two complementary chemoecological approaches: electronantennography (EAG) and olfactometry bioassays. Butanoic acid and butan-1-ol elicited high olfactory responses, but no attraction was induced by these two chemicals. Behavioral assays showed that, among the VOCs tested, methyldisulfanylmethane (DMDS) was the only volatile chemical to induce attraction in N. vitripennis. [less ▲]

In the south-eastern part of the Katanga Province (Democratic Republic of the Congo), high concentrations of copper and cobalt are found in the soils of the well-known “Copper Belt”. Due to the dominant south-eastern winds, the metallurgic industry in Lubumbashi has been the source of spatially concentrated atmospheric deposits of non-ferrous metal particles and associated substances in a cone-shaped zone, situated north-west of the metal processing site. The existence of this zone has been evidenced using two different techniques: firstly, by means of landscape metric comparisons of the vegetation and bare soil patterns in two study areas, one inside the pollution cone and one outside; secondly, by means of the theory on city perception developed by Kevin Lynch. Higher fragmentation and lower vegetation presence were observed inside the pollution cone, reflecting the negative impact of atmospheric deposits. Those differences were higher for sites closer to the emission source. Lynch’s approach outlined the negative impact of diverse industrial plants on the perception by the local population. Six pollution districts and several contaminated paths, limits, nodes and polluting landmarks were identified. Citizens even recognize them as part of the collective image of the city. [less ▲]

In order to improve the communication during shift handover in an emergency department, we observed the handover process and analysed the discourse between physicians at shift change first, then we created two cognitive tools and tested their clinical impact on the field. We used different measures to evaluate this impact on the health care process including frequency and type of information content communicated between physicians, duration of the handoff, physician self-evaluation of the quality of the handoff and a post-handover study of patient handling. Our results showed that the patient's medical history, significant tests results, recommendations (treatment plan) and patient follow-up were communicated to a greater extent when the tools are used. We also demonstrated that physicians spent more time at the bedside and less time consulting medical records using these tools. [less ▲]

While anchor heads are particularly useful in the case of large bars which require significant development lengths, the ACI code provides design guidance for bars #11 or smaller. This paper presents a test of a large deep beam reinforced with a single #18 headed bar. The behavior of the beam is evaluated in comparison to the behavior of a specimen with more conventional reinforcement of 6#8 headed bars, and to the behavior of a specimen with lap-spliced anchor hooks. Despite the extreme detailing of the specimen with a single #18 bar, the beam had the same strength as the specimen with 6#8 bars. The compressive stress in front of the anchor head reached about 1.5 times the compressive strength of the concrete and the stress in the #18 bar reached about 414 MPa (60 ksi) before the beam failed in shear along a diagonal crack away from the anchorage zone. Shear strength calculations according to Appendix A of the ACI code showed that the current strut-and-tie provisions can overestimate the shear strength of deep beams by as much as 23%. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
