The CO2 post-combustion capture with amine solvents is modeled as a complex system interconnecting process energy consumption and solvent degradation and emission. Based on own experimental data, monoethanolamine degradation is included into a CO2 capture process model. The influence of operating conditions on solvent loss is validated with pilot plant data from literature. Predicted solvent consumption rates are in better agreement with plant data than any previous work, and pathways are discussed to further refine the model. Oxidative degradation in the absorber is the largest cause of solvent loss while thermal degradation does not appear as a major concern. Using a single model, the process exergy requirement decreases by 10.8% and the solvent loss by 11.1% compared to our base case. As a result, this model provides a practical tool to simultaneously minimize the process energy requirement and the solvent consumption in post-combustion CO2 capture plants with amine solvents. [less ▲]

Background: This work seeks to expand our knowledge of developmental trajectories of subcomponents of the language systems of individuals with intellectual disability (ID). It aims to explore how general and relational vocabularies evolve as a function of cognitive level. Method: Developmental trajectories of general and relational vocabulary comprehension were compared among typically developing children (TYP) and children and adolescents with ID of undifferentiated aetiology (UND) or Down syndrome (DS). Results: Comparisons between TYP and UND participants showed no interaction between cognitive level and diagnostic status for general vocabulary, and only a very weak interaction for relational vocabulary. Comparisons between TYP and DS participants failed to reveal groupspecific trajectories. Performance in general vocabulary was higher than in relational vocabulary for both UND and DS participants. Conclusion: The developmental trajectories of vocabulary appear to be globally comparable for participants with or without ID. [less ▲]

We present an algorithm based on an Ant Colony System to deal with a broad range of Dynamic Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problems with Time Windows, (partial) Split Delivery and Heterogeneous fleets (DVRPTWSD). Besides the traditional distance criterion, we address the important case of responsiveness. Responsiveness is defined here as completing a delivery as soon as possible, within the time window, such that the client or the truck may restart its activities. This is crucial for many production or service activities in different fields: express parcel deliveries, taxi services, Just in Time production, express repair services, medical care, petrol station replenishment, etc. We develop an interactive web-based solution to allow dispatchers to take new information into account in real-time. The algorithm and its parametrization were tested on real and artificial instances. We first illustrate our approach with a problem submitted by Liege Airport, the 8th biggest cargo airport in Europe. The goal is to develop a decision system to optimize the journey of the refueling trucks. We then consider some classical VRP benchmarks with extensions for more complex problems. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

It is usual to think of the spectacular development of the Brentano School in Austria as being tied to the rise of a specific research program, which is sometimes dubbed “Austrian phenomenology”. I discuss here some evidences for the existence of such a program. In the discussion, I highlight two claims which I take to be constitutive of the Brentanian phenomenology. The first one is the epistemological claim according to which our concepts all have an empirical origin, which has to be located in the experience we have of our own mental states. The second one is the methodological claim according to which describing a mental phenomenon P is nothing but analysing P, where “analysing P” simply means “distinctly perceiving all the constituents of P”. Although a deeper insight in those two claims would require considerable further investigations, I suggest they should be part of the picture when it comes to adjudicating on the specificity of the Brentanian program. This paper proposes a new tracking state estimator aimed at following some of the dynamics of the network state (bus voltage phasors) by a hybrid processing of SCADA and synchronized phasor measurements. The latter are assumed to be available in limited number. To avoid time skew effects, only the SCADA measurements received since the last execution of the estimator are processed. To ensure observability, estimated SCADA measurements are used as pseudo-measurements. The procedure includes a prediction, an innovation analysis and a correction step. The latter consists of solving a constrained least-squares optimization. The simulation results refer to a test system undergoing large disturbances, evolving to long-term voltage instability or stabilized by emergency control. The proposed method appears to satisfactorily track the overall network evolution, even during those severe conditions. [less ▲]
