[more ▼]Hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia and blood glucose (BG) variability are associated with worsened outcomes in critical care. However, NICE-SUGAR trial showed no clinical benefit from intensive insulin therapy. This study compares the table-based NICE-SUGAR and model-based STAR protocols to assess their relative capability to achieve safe, effective control for all patients. Validated virtual patients (n=443) were used to simulate glycaemic outcomes of the NICE-SUGAR and STAR protocols. Key outcomes evaluate tightness and safety of control for all patients: %BG in 80–144 mg/dL range (PTR); Per-Patient Mean BG (PPM_BG); and Incidence of Hypoglycaemia (BG<40 mg/dL). These metrics determine performance overall, for each patient, and safety. Results are assessed for NICE-SUGAR measuring per-protocol (~24/day) and at reported average rate (~3-hourly; ~8/day). STAR measures 1-3-hourly, averaging 12/day. Per-protocol, STAR provided tight control, with higher PTR (90.7% vs. 78.3%) and tighter median [IQR] PPM_BG (112[106-119] vs. 117[106–137] mg/dL), and greater safety from hypoglycaemia (5 (1%) vs. 10 patients (2.5%)) compared to NICE-SUGAR simulations as per protocol. The 5-95th percentile range PPM_BG for NICE-SUGAR (97–185 mg/dL) showed ~5% of NICE-SUGAR patients had mean BG above 180mg/dL matching clinically reported performance. STAR’s 5th-90th PPM_BG percentile range was (97–146 mg/dL). Measuring as recorded clinically, NICE-SUGAR had PTR of 77%, PPM_BG of 122 [110-140] mg/dL and 24(6%) of patients experienced hypoglycaemia. These results match clinically reported values well (mean BG 115 vs. 118 mg/dL clinically vs. simulation, clinically 7% of patients had a hypoglycaemic event). Glycaemic control protocols need to be both safe and effective for all patients before potential clinical benefits can be assessed. NICE-SUGAR clinical results do not match results expected from their protocol, and show reduced safety and performance in comparison to STAR. Nous allons donc envisager certaines pratiques ou certains usages du photogramme cinématographique, tout en essayant de dégager, au départ de ces pratiques, les éléments d’une théorie du photogramme, que Roland Barthes et Sylvie Pierre appelaient déjà de leurs vœux. We propose methodological extensions to better reflect the respective incentives faced by singles and couples. Our results show that a more comprehensive modelling of couples’ incentives leads to very different patterns of retirement incentives – particularly for women. We apply the new indicators to data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and retirement in Europe (SHARE) in Belgium and find two key results. First, contrary to several previous studies, we obtain a positive signed income effects. Second, we find very different retirement incentives for men and women, with little flexibility in the retirement decision for men and substantially more flexibility for women as a function of financial incentive and household composition. [more ▼]Supplementation of post-weaning diets with exogenous enzymes has been suggested to control post-weaning syndrome, by compensating for the under-developed endogenous enzyme secretory capacity and increasing nutrient digestibility in newly weaned pigs. The effect of in-feed enzymes in improving gut maturation, growth and/or health in weaned piglets is not always consistent. A systematic review and a meta-analysis were therefore conducted to determine which exogenous enzymes are most consistent in improving piglet growth and digestibility when supplemented to post-weaning diets. The mean difference effect of enzyme supplementation on growth and digestibility of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP), and P digestibility was calculated for each study and this was used as the effect size estimate in the meta-analysis. The impact of feed enzyme supplementation on intestinal health and bone mineralization was also discussed where information was available in the literature. From a total of 90 studies included in the metaanalysis, G:F was improved in 55, remained un-changed in 28 and deteriorated in 7, in response to enzyme supplementation. Average daily gain, average daily feed intake (ADFI) and G:F was improved when phytase was supplemented in the diet. Phosphorous digestibility was increased with phytase supplementation while GE digestibility was reduced. Dietary phytase supplementation increased bone mineralization in pigs fed diets with a reduced Pcontent. Supplementation with multi-enzyme complexes increased DM and CP digestibility. In conclusion, the most consistent improvement in piglet growth, P digestibility and bone mineralization were found due to exogenous phytase supplementation. Supplementation with xylanase alone or in combination with β-glucanase had inconsistent effects on piglet growth and nutrient digestibility. The most consistent improvements in growth and nutrient digestibility due to supplementation with multi-enzymes complexes were found when mannanase and/or protease were included in the complex. Results showed that hydrocolloids addition significantly increased the gelatinization temperature (from 52.0 to 64.2 °C) and water absorption (from 56.22 to 66.50 %) of potato dough. Moreover, hydrocolloids may be interacted with protein and starch, the density of potato protein bands was decreased by hydrocolloids addition, the reason might be that higher molecular weight complexes might be formed between proteins-hydrocolloids or proteins-proteins, thus change the protein solubility. Furthermore, steamed breads with hydrocolloids presented higher specific volume and lower hardness, and the rapidly digestible starch and estimated glycemic index were significantly decreased from 45.51 to 20.64, from 69.54 to 55.17, respectively. In conclusion, HPMC and XG could be used as improvers in the gluten-free potato steamed bread. [more ▼]In recent years, inclusive design (a.k.a. universal design or design for all) is one of the developed approaches which aim to consider the diverse human abilities and conditions in the design process. As defined by the European Institute for Design and Disability (EIDD) ‘design for all’ is designing for diversity, social inclusion and equality. Considering the social and demographic changes in the 21st century, which include an international movement towards social inclusion and more specifically the rights of disabled people, an inclusive approach is turning into a necessity for today’s diverse and ageing society. In the case of architectural and urban heritage, the disabled people or in better words those with diverse sensory, mental or mobility abilities who differ from the general public, have the right to experience, interact with, and engage with heritage and its values. As part of an extensive interdisciplinary research on inclusive approaches to built heritage values, which connects the fields of architecture, history, conservation, inclusive design, and digital humanities, this paper investigates the potentials of incorporating digital tools and techniques in the different aspects of this research. The extensive study involves communication between researchers, relevant professional experts, and the historic built environment with the target community of disabled people and in this paper, the digital means to facilitate these interactions have been studied. As a step towards answering the question ‘what are suitable methods and tools for facilitating and acquiring insight into diversely abled people’s engagement with and understanding of architectural heritage and its values?’, it more specifically focuses on the interaction of the disabled people with the historic architecture and urban spaces. Additionally, in a more general approach, by linking the fields of digital humanities and architectural research, the existing tools for the different stages of research ranging from data collection and storage, data analysis, and dissemination are explored. By conducting and elaborating relevant research examples, this study shows how incorporating digital tools and techniques derived from Digital Humanities - such as retrieving data through APIs, textual analysis, creating and querying databases, and data visualization - can facilitate research in the field of architecture and built heritage. Moreover, in studying the relation between disability and the historic built environment, it indicates that acquiring knowledge on the potentials in practical digital tools for disabled people’s interaction with the built heritage, can have a significant impact on the research approach and findings. As for an inclusive approach to built heritage, the disabled people can be taken into account with their prospective extended digital abilities. Hence in today’s digital world, integrating the digital tools and technologies in architectural heritage research is not only a necessary practical mean for conducting research, but can also impact the theoretical approach, allowing to carry out extensive and innovative research in an efficient manner. [more ▼]Even if insect pest populations can be reduced by increasing plant diversity through intercropping, natural enemies are not always favored in such systems. Alternatively, semiochemical substances have been tested to enhance biological control, with inconsistent results. Combining both strategies can be an interesting way to maximize pest control. In this work, a 2-year setup involving wheat–pea strip intercropping combined with the release of E-b-farnesene (EBF) or methyl salicylate (MeSA) was tested as a push–pull strategy to simultaneously repel aphids and attract beneficials. Two types of slow-release formulation (i.e., oil and alginate beads) containing EBF or MeSA were deployed with the intercropping. The abundance of aphids was significantly decreased, while hoverfly larvae and mummified aphids increased on both pea plants and wheat tillers by the release of oil-formulated EBF and MeSA. The proportion parasitism of the aphid-parasitism rate [mummies/(aphids + mummies)] was also increased by treating both crops in both years. Releasing EBF through oil rather than alginate beads proved significantly better for attracting natural enemies and reducing aphids. Aphids were negatively correlated with the density of hoverflies (both adults and larvae) and numbers of mummies. All these results showed that combining intercropping with the release of EBF or MeSA formulated in oil can significantly reduce aphid density and attract their natural enemies.
