The study presented in this paper aims to evaluate the transient performance of a waste heat recovery Rankine cycle based system for a heavy duty truck and compare it to steady state evaluation. Assuming some conditions to hold, simple thermodynamic simulations are carried out for the comparison of several fluids. Then a detailed rst principle based model is also presented. Last part is focused on the Rankine cycle arrangement choice by means of model based evaluation of fuel economy for each concept where the fuels savings are computed using two methodologies. Fluid choice and concept optimization are conducted taking into account integration constraints (heat rejection, packaging . . . ). This paper shows the importance of the modeling phase when designing WHRS and yields a better understanding when it comes to a vehicle integration of a Rankine cycle in a truck. [less ▲]

In finite element simulations of orthodontic tooth movement, one of the challenges is to represent long term tooth movement. Large deformation of the periodontal ligament and large tooth displacment due to bone remodelling lead to large distortions of the finite element mesh when a Lagrangian formalism is used. We propose in this work to use an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formalism to delay remeshing operations. A large tooth displacement is obtained including effect of remodelling without the need of remeshing steps but keeping a good-quality mesh. Very large deformations in soft tissues such as the periodontal ligament is obtained using a combination of the ALE formalism used continuously and a remeshing algorithm used when needed. This work demonstrates that the ALE formalism is a very efficient way to delay remeshing operations. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Introduction et traductions de textes de Tim Crane, Fred Dretske, Gareth Evans, John McDowell, Christopher Peacocke et Charles Travis. [less ▲]

This article combines the social survey data on access to land and those of the adoption of tied ridging as soil conservation technique to help better understand the management of erosion and runoff by farmers in the Western Highlands of Cameroon, specifically in the hills of Fongo-Tongo villages’ group. The study focused on 230 plots owned by 157 respondents on 158 people inventoried. Five main modes of access to land were listed as: inheritance, purchase, temporary transfers, donations and rental. The owners and operators of the hills of gentle slopes (between11% and 17%) and steepest slopes (between 22% and 29%) were inventoried. Two main social ranks were identified: the dignitaries (Chiefs, Notables, Elites and heirs) and other (non-heirs son and women). The study showed that the agronomic abilities of plots as recognized by farmers are a key factor in the implementation of soil conservation techniques. The peasant approach of soil fertility has been scientifically proven by the physicochemical analysis of soil samples taken under plant species used locally as indicator of soil fertility (Pennisetum spp on fertile soils and Imperata cylindrica and Melinis minutiflora on poor soils). The study showed that access to land, adoption of tied ridging and slope exploitation were significantly influenced by the socio-economic status of farmers (p <0.05). [less ▲]

The 2012–14 reform of the Belgian state has deeeply transformed its Senate. Not only does the reform reduce the legislative powers of the Belgian upper chamber, but it also alters its composition. The former appointment of Senators based on a system of direct and community-based election is replaced by a system of indirect and mixed regional and community-based designation. This article presents this important reform. On the basis of a comprehensive dataset of federal and regional political careers, it also comparatively analyses the profile of the Senators, before and after the reform. Overall, although rules regarding seats allocation have been thoroughly remodelled, we conclude that the reform had neither dramatically affected the subtle balances upon which the Belgian federal state relies nor altered the patterns of Senators’ profiles. Small-angle scattering of x-rays (SAXS) or neutrons (SANS) is one of the few experimental methods that can in principle be used for the in situ study at the mesoscopic scale of physicochemical phenomena occurring inside nanoporous solids. However, the potential of the method is often limited by the lack of suitable data analysis methods to convert scattering data into real-space structural information. This is notably the case for most porous materials of practical interest, which exhibit a hierarchical structure with micro, meso, and macropores, with often a secondary material confined in the pores, such as in supported catalysts, as well as fuel-cell and battery materials. In the present contribution, we propose a general analysis of x-ray scattering by this type of material. Assuming that each structural level is statistically independent from the others and has a distinct characteristic length scale, compact mathematical expressions are derived for the scattering of the entire hierarchical structure. The results are particularised to the SAXS analysis of SBA-15 ordered mesoporous silica loaded with copper nitrate as well as to supported catalysts obtained after heat treatment of that material. The SAXS data analysis shows that the nitrate fills both the micro and mesopores of the material, while the metallic copper obtained after heat treatment is found only in the mesopores. Moreover, the mesoscopic-scale spatial distribution of the metal depends on the heat treatment, in line with earlier electron tomography studies. The main ideas underlying the SAXS data analysis were presented in an recent Communication [Gommes et al., Angew. Chem. Intl. Ed. 54 (2015) 11804-11808]. Here we generalise the approach and we provide a comprehensive discussion of how any level in a hierarchical structure contributes to its overall scattering pattern. The results, as well as the general modelling methodology, will be of interest to anyone interested in the quantitative analysis of small-angle scattering data of empty or loaded porous solids, and more generally of any type of hierarchical material.
