Laser cladding is an economic layer-by-layer near-net-shape process for the production and the repair of metallic parts. In this process, a metallic powder is projected onto a substrate while being molten by a laser beam. Laser sources with fairly high power – i.e. typically 2kW − are often used to ensure short building times and high productivity. However, this approach has limitations. Indeed, it is very difficult to produce thin walls at high laser power. Moreover, an increase of the incident energy may give rise to a relatively coarser microstructure, and this will in turn affect the mechanical properties of the component. In order to address these issues, this paper aims at assessing the potential of a laser source with a lower maximum power of 300W to enhance the flexibility of the process. Two types of samples – i.e. thin walls or bulk deposits − were produced at low laser power from alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Their geometry, microstructures and local hardness are characterised and correlated with the thermal history experienced during fabrication. [less ▲]

In the academic debate about the southern Nigerian video industry (Nollywood), the role of women has generally been underestimated. Articles that focus on the connection between women and the video industry tend to analyse the discourse about gender that videos produce and circulate and see the videos as propagator of sexist and patriarchal stereotypes about women and their place in society. Some analysts have nuanced these criticisms by showing the variety and complexity of the gender discourse that videos circulate, and by emphasizing that the video stories make new forms of female social mobility visible. However, almost no attention has been given to the analysis of how the industry, as a form of business, has opened new spaces for women’s economic and social mobility. In this chapter I make an attempt at addressing this gap by focusing on the experience of a number of women who have successfully established themselves as entrepreneurs in the southern Nigerian video industry. Thanks to their specific business strategies, they have created new spaces for female economic and social mobility in this sector, and have gained pronounced social visibility, thus contributing to the construction of the collective imagination of women’s social and economic success. From the earliest Neolithic in the Near East to the last Chalcolithic cultures in Western Europe, certain flint tools have been used as sickles to harvest cereals. Such harvesting tools can be identified through use-wear analyses, because cutting herbaceous plants produces specific wear-traces on the working edge of flint blades. The aim of this work is to explore harvesting-driven microwear variability and, more particularly, intensity of use as a governing factor. To achieve this objective, an experiment was designed consisting in the production of flint replicas to be used as harvesting tools, in various controlled conditions. A simple, cost-effective method of quantifying wear-traces by meas uring polish extent is developed, requiring only classical use-wear observation equipment. Polish extent shows monotonic correlation with the amount of work, expressed either in terms of time or as the quantity of cereals harvested. Polish extent measurement is therefore proposed as a reliable and powerful descriptor of use intensity. [less ▲]

Laser cladding is a metal deposition technique used to fabricate or repair components made from high value metallic alloys. In the present work Ti-6Al-4V deposits with variable thickness are made to assess the use of laser cladding as a repair technology. Both the effect of the building strategy (BS) and the incident energy (IE) on the metallurgical characteristics of the deposits in relation to their complex thermal history have been studying. It is shown that for the configuration consisting in a decreasing track length (DTL) under high IE, a gradient of cooling rate exists that leads to the presence of different phases within the microstructure. Conversely homogeneous microstructures are present either for the configuration with a constant track length (CTL) under high IE, and for the strategy obtained from a DTL under low IE. Depending on the possible heat accumulation the nature of the phases are determined together with hardness maps within the deposits. Some qualification criteria are set prior to tensile tests to selected the adequate candidate-deposit that does not weaken the cladded material when it is stressed. A thermo-metallurgical scheme is proposed that helps understanding the effect of both the BS and the IE on the microstructure. [less ▲]

One of the key steps in the procedure before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) is the filing of a closing order in relation to one or several suspects. In case 002, Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith and Khieu Samphan all filed motions of appeal against several aspects of the closing order delivered on 16 September 2010, by which the Co-Investigating Judges ordered their indictment. This commentary attempts to shed some light on three decisions issued by the Pre-Trial Chamber on these appeals. Two procedural matters discussed in the decisions are first outlined, namely the right to appeal against a closing order and the latter’s impact on the regime of provisional detention. The analysis then turns to the core substantive contribution of the decisions, that is, the adjudication of the various jurisdictional challenges on the basis of the nullum crimen principle. In the end, it is submitted that, on the whole, the judges showed strict adherence to the principle of legality, thereby strengthening the ECCC’s legitimacy in the realm of global criminal justice. Reducing pesticide use is one the major issues of today’s agriculture. Among other possibilities, attracting and conserving pest natural enemies in agricultural landscapes by providing them habitats is promising. Wildflower strips (WFS) sown at field margins are one of these potential habitats. They are known to attract and conserve a large diversity of insects, as they provide them food resources such as pollen and nectar, as well as shelter and overwintering sites. However, the risk of attracting insect pests at field margins may represent an obstacle to their adoption by farmers. Conversely, it would be interesting if such WFS could play the role of pest trap crops. In an experimental field sown with WFS intercropped with oilseed rape (OSR) (Brassica napus L.), its coleopteran pests were trapped in both WFS and OSR using yellow pan traps between April and June 2014. More than 130 000 Meligethes spp., Ceutorhynchus spp. and Psylliodes chrysocephalla (L.) adults were trapped. Meligethes spp., Ceutorhynchus spp. were significantly more abundant in the OSR compared with WFS when adults emerged and populations reached their abundance peak. Before and between these periods, the few adults trapped were significantly more abundant in the WFS compared with the OSR. Concerning P. chrysocephala, too few individuals were caught for analysis. Results showed that OSR was more attractive than WFS when coleopteran pests were abundant. In this study, WFS sown for insect conservation may neither favour insect pest conservation at field margin, nor be considered as trap crops. [less ▲]

During last decades coral reefs have been affected by several large-scale bleaching events and such phenomenon is expected to increase in frequency and severity in the future thus compromising their survival. High sea surface temperature accompanied by high levels of solar irradiance has been found to be responsible for the induction of an oxidative stress ultimately ending with the disruption of the symbiosis between cnidarians and Symbiodinium. Since two decades many studies have pointed out the water-water cycle as being one of the primary mediators of this phenomenon, but the impacts of environmental stress on the O2 reduction by PSI and the associated ROS-detoxifying enzymes remain to be determined. In this study, we analyzed the impacts of an acute thermal and light stress on the WWC in the model Symbiodinium strain A1. We observed that high light treatment at 26°C resulted in the up-regulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities and an increased production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) with no significant change in O2-dependent electron transport. Under high light and at 33°C, O2-dependent electron transport was significantly increased relative to total electron transport. This increase was concomitant with a two-fold increase in ROS generation compared to the treatment at 26°C, while enzymes involved in the WWC were largely inactivated. These data show for the first time that combined heat and light stress inactivate antioxidant capacities of the WWC, and suggests that its photoprotective functions are overwhelmed under these conditions. This study also indicates that cnidarians may be more prone to bleach if they harbor Symbiodinium cells having a highly active Mehler-type electron transport, unless they are able to quickly up-regulate their antioxidant capacities. Architects express themselves graphically in order to communicate ideas both to clients and to themselves. In practice, they rely on a variety of representations such as free-hand drawings, 3D computer rendered images, and photomontages to convey their design intent. Research to date has demonstrated differences and commonalities in the ways in which expert designers and laymen perceive visual understanding. It is still unclear how architects themselves use different types of representations to express different intentions, and how accurately their expected audience perceives those intentions. The purpose of this research is to investigate how laymen interpret the initial design intent of an architect’s design, and what role different forms of representations play in this process of understanding a design. This paper describes a five-step process for developing a survey that was used to gather data from 686 laymen respondents. It was found that certain types of simpler representations presented in specific contexts are unexpectedly found to be a more efficient way to faithfully transmit an architectural intent. [less ▲]
