A large dataset of dayside grazing limb CO2+ observations performed by the SPICAM (Spectroscopy for Investigation of Characteristics of the Atmosphere of Mars) instrument on board Mars Express is analyzed to retrieve Martian thermospheric temperature, as well as its variation with solar activity, season and latitude. The method permits to retrieve the temperature from the scale height of the CO2+ emission. We also present puzzling features such as limb profiles exhibiting multiple peaks and their characteristics. We furthermore study the behavior of the main emission peak of the CO2+ vertical emission profiles. The CO2+ emission at 289 nm arises from the relaxation of the CO2+* molecule in the B2Σ+ state to the X2Π state. CO2+* molecules are mainly produced in the Martian dayside through photoionisation and photoelectron impact. The CO2+ emission exhibits features that constrain the temperature and density vertical profiles of CO2. Comparisons of retrieved temperatures are made with corresponding simulations from the coupled MGCM-MTGCM. We also use a Monte-Carlo code to model the observed intensity limb profiles. [less ▲]

COSMOGRAIL is a long-term programme for the photometric monitoring of gravitationally lensed quasars. It makes use of several medium-size telescopes to derive long and well-sampled light curves of lensed quasars, in order to measure the time delays between the quasar images. These delays directly relate to the Hubble constant H0, without any need for secondary distance calibrations. COSMOGRAIL was initiated in 2004, and has now secured almost a decade of data, resulting in cosmological constraints that are very complementary to other cosmological probes. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Who are the women who learn online ? Why and in which circumstances have they chosen to learn online ? Have they taken advantage of this experience ? In this article, we speak about the exploratory survey carried out with 22 women to know their motivation in online courses, what they did during those courses and what they remember of their experience. We also wanted to know whether eLearning gave women the opportunity to learn and to be trained even when they have a lot of responsabilities and sometimes little time to learn. [less ▲]

This report investigated the impact of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) on transplantation outcomes in 1859 acute myeloid leukemia patients given allogeneic peripheral blood stem cells after reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC allo-SCT). Grade I acute GVHD was associated with a lower risk of relapse (hazards ratio (HR)¼0.7, P¼0.02) translating into a trend for better overall survival (OS; HR¼1.3; P¼0.07). Grade II acute GVHD had no net impact on OS, while grade III–IV acute GVHD was associated with a worse OS (HR¼0.4, Po0.0.001) owing to high risk of nonrelapse mortality (NRM; HR¼5.2, Po0.0001). In time-dependent multivariate Cox analyses, limited chronic GVHD tended to be associated with a lower risk of relapse (HR¼0.72; P¼0.07) translating into a better OS (HR¼1.8; Po0.001), while extensive chronic GVHD was associated with a lower risk of relapse (HR¼0.65; P¼0.02) but also with higher NRM (HR¼3.5; Po0.001) and thus had no net impact on OS. In-vivo T-cell depletion with antithymocyte globulin (ATG) or alemtuzumab was successful at preventing extensive chronic GVHD (Po0.001), but without improving OS for ATG and even with worsening OS for alemtuzumab (HR¼0.65; P¼0.001). These results highlight the role of the immune-mediated graft-versus-leukemia effect in the RIC allo-SCT setting, but also the need for improving the prevention and treatment of severe GVHD. These slides were used as support for a course taught in English (in 2012) which provides an overview of the major questions arising in the field of nationality law. The course focuses on acquisition and loss of nationality and touches upon other issues such as multiple nationalities and the influence of the European construction on nationality law. All these questions are studied using comparative materials (mainly from Western Europe) as basis. Reference is also made to the European Convention on Nationality (1997) as well as to other relevant international instruments dealing with nationality law. [less ▲]

Objective: The present study was undertaken to investigate the population dynamics of the intermediate hosts of Fasciola gigantica and the levels of infection in the snails. This would allow identifying the most important transmission periods and suggesting optimal snail control for the area. Methods: Lymnaeid snails were monthly collected by hand picking in Ha Noi (Northern Vietnam) during the period from March 2010 to December 2011 and in Binh Dinh province (Central Vietnam) during the period May and September 2012. Collected snails from different sites were identified based on morphology and the partial 16S rDNA sequence and ITS-2 sequence. Snails were examined for the presence of Fasciola larval by the crushing method and confirmation by multiplex PCR analyses with PCR primer for Fasciola gigantica cathepsin L in parallel with the snail rDNA species specific primer. Result: The density of Lymnaeid populations underwent great changes in relation to the geographical locations and seasons. In Central Vietnam, the Lymnaeid populations reached the peak in the dry/rainy season (May) and decreased sharply in rainy/dry season (September). In contrast, in Hanoi, it reached the peaks in 2 periods (February to April and August to November) of rice cultivation or early stage of growing of rice, and greatly deceased when the rice becomes fully developed. Transmission of fascioliasis in Ha Noi were high when rice cultivation is performed, while the permanent transmission can takes place through the year in Binh Dinh with peak transmission during the dry season. Multiplex PCR was used to detect Fasciola gigantica infection in Lymnaea viridis snail as intermediate host. In this study, snail Lymnaea viridis was experimentally infected with F.gigantica and used for DNA template. Fasciola specific primers was amplified a 124 bp fragment in multiplex PCR when the genomic DNA isolated from F.gigantica infected Lymnaea viridis snails was used as template and amplified a 500 - 600 bp fragment. Genomic DNA of the parasite was used as a positive control, which also gave an amplification of the 124 bp fragment. DNA isolated from non-infected snails was used as a negative control and no amplification of this sequence was observed. The developed diagnostic multiplex PCR will be of use for assessment of transmission of fascioliasis in snail as intermediate host in Vietnam. [less ▲]
