Background: The impact of sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine (SP) used as intermittent preventive treatment during pregnancy (IPTp-SP) on mutant parasite selection has been poorly documented in Burkina Faso. This study sought first to explore the relationship between IPTp-SP and the presence of mutant parasites. Second, to assess the Relationship between the mutant parasites and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Methods: From September to December 2010, dried blood spots (DBS) were collected during antenatal care visits and at delivery from 109 pregnant women with microscopically confirmed falciparum malaria infection. DBS were analysed by PCR–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) for the polymorphisms at codons 51, 59, 108 and 164 of the Pfdhfr gene and codons 437 and 540 in the Pfdhps gene. Results: Both the Pfdhfr and Pfdhps genes were successfully genotyped in 92.7% (101/109) of the samples. The prevalence of Pfdhfr mutations N51I, C59R and S108N was 71.3, 42.6 and 64.4%, respectively. Overall, 80.2% (81/101) of samples carried the Pfdhps A437G mutation. None of the samples had the Pfdhfr I164L and the Pfdhps K540E mutations. The prevalence of the triple mutation N51I + C59R + S108N was 25.7% (26/101). The use of IPTp-SP was associated with a threefold increased odds of Pfdhfr C59R mutation [crude OR 3.29; 95% CI (1.44–7.50)]. Pregnant women with recent uptake of IPTp-SP were at higher odds of both the Pfdhfr C59R mutation [adjusted OR 4.26; 95% CI (1.64–11.07)] and the Pfdhfr intermediate-to-high resistance, i.e., ≥ 2 Pfdhfr mutations [adjusted OR 3.45; 95% CI (1.18–10.07)]. There was no statistically significant association between the presence of the Pfdhfr intermediate-tohigh resistance and parasite densities or both maternal haemoglobin level and anaemia. Conclusion: The data indicate that despite the possibility that IPTp-SP contributes to the selection of resistant parasites, it did not potentiate pregnancy-associated malaria morbidity, suggesting the continuation of SP use as IPTp in Burkina Faso. A new photo-sensitive diblock copolymer composed of a hydrophilic sequence of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) linked to a CO2-philic sequence of poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate) (PFDA) by a light sensitive o- nitrobenzyl group was successfully synthesized by RAFT polymerization and used as stabilizer for the free radical polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in dispersion in ?,?,?-trifluorotoluene and supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). Thanks to this fluorinated stabilizer, well-defined particles of PHEMA down to 350 nm of diameter were produced in scCO2. Advantageously, the photocleavable group at the block junction of the stabilizer could be cleaved by exposing the particles to UV light so that the fluorinated block could be extracted in TFT or scCO2. As supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, up to 80 % of the fluorinated block of the stabilizer can be removed, leading to efficient swelling and dispersion of the resulting PHEMA nanogels in water. BACKGROUND: Downer cow syndrome (DCS) is often diagnosed in dairy cattle during the early post-partum period. The etiology of this condition is not completely understood, as it can be related to the energetic or electrolyte metabolism, as well as to infectious diseases or to trauma. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity indices and various biochemical parameters between recumbent and healthy dairy cows. ANIMALS: A prospective study has been undertaken on 361 recumbent and 80 healthy Holstein cows. METHODS: Plasmatic glucose, insulin, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) were assayed in all cows in order to calculate the insulin sensitivity indices but also minerals (Calcium, Phosphorous and Magnesium), thyroxin and creatine kinase. Body Condition Scores (BCS) was assessed. RESULTS: Significant differences in NEFA, and the glucose and insulin sensitivity indices ("Homeostasis Model Assessment" HOMA, "Revised Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index" RQUICKI, RQUICKI-BHB) were observed between healthy and recumbent cows in the early post-parturient period indicating disturbances of glucose and insulin homeostasis in the recumbent cows. In the same manner, mineral concentrations were significantly different between healthy and recumbent cows. Glucose, insulin NEFA, and HOMA, were different between early post-partum downer cows and the DCS-affected cows later in lactation. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Results indicate disturbances in energy homeostasis in DCS-affected dairy cows. Further research should determine a prognostic value of the indices in cows suffering from recumbency of metabolic origin [less ▲]

The Walloon Region Soil decree proposes a series of guidance documents associated to the procedures for site remediation operations. Among others, one of these documents describes methodologies and tools for risk assessment of pollutant leaching from soil to groundwater and for pollutant dispersion through groundwater. These tools require using estimates of hydrogeolocial parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, effective (transport) porosity etc. In this context, an inventory of hydrogeological studies (regional characterization studies, groundwater protection zones…) was performed to identify and collect available field-based measurements for a statistical description and analysis of such data. Complementary to that, a simple geodatabase has been developed to manage and process these data. As expected, these results show contrasted parameter distributions per geological contexts and regions. The objective of the presentation is to describe the methodology followed for the statistical treatment of hydrogeological data and to present the results and associated database. It is believed that such results can be very useful for different hydrogeological studies, in particular as a first referential for groundwater modelling applications and any other studies where statistical descriptions of hydrogeological data are relevant. We report on the ground-based FTIR (Fourier Transform InfraRed) tropospheric water vapour isotopologue remote sensing data that have been recently made available via the database of NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change; ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ndacc/MUSICA/) and via doi:10.5281/zenodo.48902. Currently, data are available for 12 globally distributed stations. They have been centrally retrieved and quality filtered in the framework of the MUSICA project (MUlti-platform remote Sensing of Isotopologues for investigating the Cycle of Atmospheric water). We explain particularities of retrieving the water vapour isotopologue state (vertical distribution of H162O, H182O and HD16O) and reveal the need for a new meta-data template for archiving FTIR isotopologue data. We describe the format of different data components and give recommendations for correct data usage. Data are provided as two data types. The first type is best-suited for tropospheric water vapour distribution studies disregarding different isotopologues (comparison with radiosonde data, analyses of water vapour variability and trends, etc.). The second type is needed for analysing moisture pathways by means of {H2O,delta-D}-pair distributions. [less ▲]

In the actual context, biopesticides have emerged as a main alternative to conventional agriculture1. Hence, elicitors are metabolites naturally produced by microorganisms, pathogenic or not, and plants which are able to induce the natural resistance of plants. Also, they have proved to be excellent candidates for biological control. In this context, the lipoxygenase pathway leads to the formation of fatty acid degradation products, called oxylipins, which appear to be crucial agents in plant defence mechanisms2,3. Moreover, with their broad spectrum of action and their possible inducibility, oxylipins appear to be promising candidates for their use as elicitors4. This work focuses on two hydroperoxy-derived oxylipins, the 13(S)-hydroperoxy-octadecadienoic acid (13-HPOD) and the 13(S)-hydroperoxy-octadecatrienoic acid (13-HPOT). The study of the interaction of such compounds with representative plant plasma membrane lipids is essential to understand plant resistance mechanisms. Several in silico and experimental techniques of biophysics showed that acyl-hydroperoxides have significant adsorption capacity and a strong affinity for model membranes. They may also penetrate biological membrane but no permeabilisation effect was observed in this work. Slight conformational differences seem to have a significant impact on their ability to interact with plant plasma membranes. Based on these results, further investigation of the interactions of fatty acids hydroperoxides, even more on the 9-forms, with plant plasma membranes and eventually in the presence of phytopathogenic species, would allow a better understanding of the innate immunity and, on the longer term, could lead to the development of new elicitors with biological mechanisms potentially independent of membrane protein receptors. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 5% of the population suffers from hearing impairments. These can lead to social isolation, depression, or a reduction in professional abilities. There are two types of hearing impairments : conductive hearing impairment and sensorineural hearing impairment. The first results from a defect in sound conduction at the level of the outer or middle ear, the latter results from defects in the cochlea or auditory nerve. In recent years, most studies on the organ of hearing have focused on sensory cells, which are actual receptors of auditory information, whereas supporting cells have been little explored. However, the latter, surrounding the sensory cells, contain a highly developed cytoskeleton, essential to the architecture of the mature organ of Corti. During this thesis work, we first observed the setting up of microtubules within the supporting cells of the organ of Corti. Our morphological data revealed important changes in microtubular cytoskeleton of these cells during the first week of life. We identified an arrangement of microtubules into two distinct bundles. We then demonstrated a modification in the morphology of these microtubules, revealing an increase in the diameter and the number of protofilaments of these cells. We finally demonstrated that tubulin βV has a more specific spatiotemporal distribution than the other tubulins. This characteristic suggests that tubulin βV plays an important role in the maturation of the Corti organ. In the second part of this thesis, we analyzed the involvement of vimentin in cochlear development, and more particularly in the opening of the intercellular spaces and in the myelination of the spiral ganglion, which is the first relay of the auditory pathway. In order to study the role of vimentin in the development of the inner ear, we examined the cochlear morphology and auditory capacities of vimentin deficient mice. Our results indicated that the absence of vimentin does not seem to affect the architecture of the organ of Corti. We then showed a slight morphological difference in the nerve fibers between wildtype and vimentin-knockout mice. We finally checked the hearing physiology of these mice and concluded that vimentin does not play a major role in hearing. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
